Want grandchildren ? Marry your cousin !
2008-02-09 14:23:00 Marriages between distant cousins on Iceland seem to be far more productive then ?normal? marriages. On average more children and grandchildren are born as a result of marriages between men and women who are (distantly) related. This became clear after a study on the matter was published in the scientific magazine Science this week. Research was done under supervision of Agnar Helgason of biotech company deCode Genetics.A study was made on all marriages on the island between 1800 and 1965. Surprisingly marriages between cousins in the third and fourth grade came out on top of the fertility scale. The researchers involved in the study suspect a biological reason is behind these figures. These cousins probably benefit from affinity within the family as well as a healthy amount of genetic mixture. In many countries marriages and reproduction between cousins is strictly prohibited by law. The risk for diseases because of genetic resemblance is considered too large. More About: Marry

It includes potatoes, originating from South America, flour and onions from the Middle East, coffee from Ethiopia and mustard from India?.According to John Wilson of the research team this shows that modern foods are more varied than foods from traditional societies: ? ?that such a meal contains more then twenty different ingredients is very impressive, especially when one keeps in mind that some traditional communities use only 50 to 100 ingredients in their cooking?. Pregnancy makes women forget
2008-02-07 21:22:00 Researchers at the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne have discovered some interesting stuff about pregnant women. The pregnancy is resulting in considerable amounts of amnesia. Scientists Henry and Peter Randell have tested the memories of thousands, both pregnant and non pregnant, women. The women carrying a baby appeared to have trouble remembering new information, unknown names and telephone numbers. Facts they had already known, however, they remembered without a problem. Strangely enough, the memories of the tested women did not appear to return to the old levels after the labour. The researchers are still clueless to as why this is the case. But they do expect that a pregnancy can influence the women?s cognitive skills a great deal. They also suspect stress, insomnia and the preparation to a new life to be factors. Wasps ground Qantas flights
2008-02-07 15:30:00 A wasp plague has prevented three Qantas flights from taking off properly at the airport of Brisbane in Australia. This has become clear from a security report. The insects had made nests in parts of the Airbus A330-fleet of Qantas, as a result of which they disturbed the flight equipment. In one of the cases a plane had to make a stop while already taking off. This caused the brakes to overheat the tires, which in turn caused six out of eight tires to blow up. The airplane remained stranded on the tarmac. The pilot was forced to start the braking procedure while already traveling at a speed of 226 kph. In turn the brakes reached a temperature of 685 degrees. Since the incidents Qantas implemented a weekly wasp nest checkup on their fleet. read more here More About: Flights , Ground , Wasps
