What is All This Talk About ‘P’?
2007-12-07 15:47:00
As long as I can remember I have heard women and men alike talking about something called ‘PMS’. I thought those were the letters that came before the Titanic. Oh, the HMS Titanic. I was wrong—sort of. There are some similarities. People don’t die literally because of ‘PMS’ but many lives have become temporarily shattered because of those letters. Just like the Titanic represents a day of tragedy and torment for all those involved so does ‘PMS’. My wife told me that once every month something special happens that allows women liberty to be really nasty to just about anyone and redeem a virtual get out of jail free card just by claiming to be in possession of those three letters. I asked her, “Can I do that?” She laughed at me—hard. I don’t get it. My wife, who will remain nameless (Joe + D) as to protect her, began to regale me with a story that told me all I wanted to know and more about ‘PMS&r...

I Apologize For the Inconvenience
2007-12-07 14:52:00
Apparently, ‘it’ finally happened. I was hacked for the first time today. Someone thought it would be really cool to mess around with my CSS Code and make my life a living nightmare. What makes matters worse is I know the person who perpetrated this unforgivable act. It was me. I am a “noob” programmer or what others like to call an “imbecile” but those are technical terms of course. I thought I had figured out some bothersome CSS quandary I had toiled over from my youth (5 months ago) while visiting some CSS sites (I can’t believe I typed that sentence—I am such the dork). So, after quickly surmising a righteous fix for my site (see not at all) I plugged in data and cut out code then finally—click. WTFudge! My site crashed. It changed in a bad, bad way. I mean up to this point, I was responsible for changing colors all over my page, centering, left and right aligning text. Why did I fail so miserably today? Simple r...

Lyrics of My Life: A Blog Review
2007-12-06 00:19:00
One my new blogging friends is a great lady over at Lyrics of My Life . Her name is Karen and she is first and foremost a military wife and a mother to three children. She has a daughter and two boys. I could at this time name her children, but I think that you should get that information on your own at her blog. Lyrics of My Life is a very candid look into her life. Karen writes about whatever peeks her interest, for instance she writes about ‘coming out’ in reference to her addiction to reality TV shows. She will write about her friends in and out of the blogging community in a very humble and complimenting way. Some people you can just tell are authentic and nice individuals just by reading what they write and she is definitely in that category. Karen writes about family life, like when her husband was over in Iraq and how that affected her and her children. She talks about the possibility of the redeployment of his unit in the future. She exhibits a great dea...

Is It the End of the World? Nope, My Bad
2007-12-04 20:57:00
I am not sure if anyone else experiences some of the ridiculous thoughts that go through deranged stay at home dad minds. For instance, yesterday was very cold and windy. Around 9:30 am our power went out. I think it was 9:30 because it was just after the conclusion of Little Bear (9:30). The TV went blank and the lights, the few that were on, went out. Our security system began its requisite chiming letting me know that it had experienced a power failure. My youngest daughter who is home with me during the day quickly ran and got me batteries out of our ‘utility drawer’ and offered them to me to fix the TV. That is clearly the behavior of an addict, but I digress. I am connected either via the net or TV to information whenever I want it. If I want to know what I weigh on Jupiter I just type my question into the computer and the answer is always just a couple clicks away—425.5 pounds in case you were wondering. Being without information is like being a pr...

Personal Paranoia: A Blog Review
2007-12-04 11:14:00
I was tagged by a new blogging acquaintance, Nick Carlton, and instead of simply doing the meme here is a blog review in replace. Nick’s blog, Personal Paranoia (http://personalparanoia.blogspot.com/), is not an easy one to define. He blogs about almost anything and his posts vary from the humorous to the thought provoking and often times both. He will tackle topics from social norms to religion, love to rants about almost anything. Nick doesn’t mind stepping on toes or saying things that aren’t even close to politically correct as he speaks his mind on the topic du jour. Nick enjoys music, philosophizing and poetry. He likes to intertwine music videos, poems and his own philosophical view point in posts about something related to act as a back drop or to highlight his point further. Nick is a free thinking 38 year old man from Southern California who enjoys blogging about engaging topics in a thought provoking way. If this is your type of blog stop by and ...

Picking a Winner

**If you are squeamish or easily disturbed do not read this funny, well written masterpiece. **Today was an interesting day for me as I went to my daughters’ school. My father-in-law, a professional musician, performed at their school and highlighted my two oldest daughters in his performances. He is a brilliant musician and wonderful with kids. Everything always goes perfectly during his performances as children are engaged and active listeners/learners. His performances aren’t the focus of this article rather a backdrop. Today was the third time I was in their school in two weeks. American Education week was a couple of weeks ago, which was my first visit, then I went back to their school to observe my youngest daughter’s kindergarten class for a second time (long story) and today makes three. Here’s where it gets fun. I noticed something about kids in those three visits to school. Kids pick their noses constantly. I saw kids patrolling the olfac...

If Mom Says Ok: A Blog Review
2007-11-30 13:34:00
A new blogging friend of mine is Tara from If Mom Says Ok (http://ifmomsaysok.freedomblogging.com/) . I am doing this blog review in replace of a meme and although I have not known her or her blog long I will attempt to do this review justice. First and foremost I have to mention that her blog is hosted through freedomblogging.com and although she has to deal with an onslaught of relentless accompanied ads she does a terrific job of making sure her blog is “her own.” She is a mother who blogs about a range of topics. Her posts can be short and sweet, a few sentences accompanying clever picture, or longer and more serious, like when she tackles issues such as gun control on college campuses. She is unafraid to speak her mind and is an entertaining and intelligent writer. Almost all of her posts center around her children and her family. She also pays careful attention to the issue of education. She enjoys reading as she notes in more than one post. She is a colle...

I Wear My Pants Backwards
2007-11-29 10:21:00
Perhaps you may think that this title is a super awesome metaphor making some kind of lofty statement about my condition as a stay-at-home-dad, and you would be wrong. No metaphor here I am sorry to say. I think I am either slightly or completely retarded. I woke up yesterday like I do most days, in a fugue state, and identified the nearest clothes and hastily put them on. As I went about my morning functions as a SAHD (stay-at-home-dad) my tunnel vision was complete. I thought about teeth needing to be brushed, kids needing socks on under their shoes, breakfast with a side order of juice and vitamin, backpacks, coats, and my toddler’s inevitable spilled cereal. By the time my parents stopped by for a visit I was in “the groove” of my routine. I had some chores to do and over the course of the late morning and early afternoon I plodded through laundry, mopping and dishes among others. It wasn’t until I started picking up countless pony tails and crayo...

My 3 Boys and I: A Blog Review
2007-11-29 06:50:00
I have owed my friend Jen a meme perhaps since the beginning of recorded time. Jen is a My 3 Boys and I. (http://my3boysandi.wordpress.com/) She is an avid reader of both blogs and books and seems to get around the blogosphere as much as any blogger I know. She will recap her week in one weekly post and uses her other days to show off her personal photography, reviews on books or just something that is a bit more than daily drudgery. Jen is a great blogger friend to all she knows as she is meme-tastic. If you look at my “Cluster Map” widget on the right side bar—she is the big red circle in New Zealand. Unlike myself, she gets right on a meme assignment and completes it almost as quickly as she was “tagged” to do so. She is very open about her life and uses a very colorful array of headlines, fonts and photos to show off her blog in a myriad of hues. Jen is a Christian woman that isn’t afraid to talk about spirituality and how blessed...

JoeprahÂ’s View on MeMes: A New Mission Statement
2007-11-28 19:18:00
I have been tagged lately by a few of my bloggy friends to do memes. I have to admit I am currently late completing more than one meme and, although I have no issue with memems, I have been thinking perhaps I could do something better than a simple meme. Then it hit me. How about just doing a blog review instead of a meme. Like the guys in the Guinness commercials I was all like, “Brilliant!” Win win for everyone right?? Instead of just a link to someones blog at the bottom of meme you could find out so much more, also if you were being reviewed you could get some additional exposure something that all bloggers want, right? So, in the future as I get tagged I will provide a blog review for said “tagger” and in return all I ask is link love on their blog. I would also like to make myself available on a first come first serve basis to any mom and dad blogger or a blogger who is just down right entertaining to provide for them a blog review free of charg...

2007-11-26 21:08:00
I am going to plug myself yet again and ask for some support (yet again) as I have entered myself in the Bloggers Choice Awards contest (first time doing that). Anyways, I will make this short and sweet, for any visitors that would like to do something nice for Joeprah, simply click on my badges on the left side bar (no, your other left) and vote for me. If you have not registered for the Bloggers Choice Awards site (http://www.bloggerschoiceawards.com/), it will take you all of 2 minutes if you type slowly. I especially would like to call on my lurkers, those people who like to read but not to comment, to help me on this one. If you ever wanted to be on a winning team, this is your chance. And you will have the satisfaction of knowing you helped someone who truly cares…about winning. You will be thrilled to know you can vote for me in four exciting categories: Hottest Daddy Blogger (duh)Best Parenting Blog (ahem)Best Humor Blog (well, why not)And humbly Best Blog o...

Matrixing Controversy

I am controversial. Really. Just ask “concerned grandma.” Here is a copy of an email I received that shook me to my foundation: Somebody sent you an email using the form on your website. This is what he typed in: Name:concerned grandmaEmail:granma@stophate.comMessage:C ute website but I noticed stronger than a Mo - was that a derogatory term for gays? Please dont teach your daughter to be homophobic! I know that this person is simply out of touch and doesn’t understand that “Mo” is a shortened form of “MoFo” which is of course a shortened form of a really bad curse word phrase. I know that my attempt at being hip was lost on this elderly woman. I, of course, know that they had good intentions for emailing me about their “concerns.” It also, hopefully, goes without saying that I do not teach homophobia to my daughters. I am not exactly sure how that would be possible since many of daddy’s friends think I am gay bec...

Badge of Honor
2007-11-23 17:40:00
I don’t know about the rest of my readers but internet security for my family is something that I think about more than I should. In my opinion, there should be a group of folks that are working overtime to insure that our children aren’t exposed to people exposing themselves. Unfortunately, there are a ton of perverts who are working countless hours to make vulgarity and smut accessible to anyone who can string together consonants and vowels and press enter on a keyboard. This issue really became salient to our family as we installed our wireless network in our house and thus allowing internet access on our oldest daughter’s computer. I made sure that the settings were on the highest and that only sites that I personally ok’d with my password were viewable and everything else was blocked. When it comes to my site I do not write anything that I would be ashamed to have my children read, and although I have been known to curse on occasion among friends ...

Who is Joeprah?
2007-11-21 08:21:00
I have had many people (0) inquire why I don’t talk about myself on my site. It is really difficult for me to break the code of anonymity that has surrounded who I am since I have always wanted to make this site about the kids. First off, my kids are more photogenic and pound for pound they are much more interesting than I am. I think it is time though to shake things up around here. People deserve, no strike that, demand the truth. So, without further ado: Who is Joeprah? First and foremost, I want to say that my name is Joe. That may come as a shock to many that think my birth name is Joeprah. Joeprah is a carefully constructed code to hide my real name and assure my anonymity. Who could crack that code? No one. I am a suburbanite dude that has always lived in the beautiful state of Maryland. I am married and have been longer than most people would guess. I married my high school sweetheart, because she rules, at the age of 21. I am 32, do the math. We have ...

Stay at Home Dads: The Unintentional Feminists
2007-11-15 20:25:00
Serious Joeprah? Yep. I wrote some serious stuff for once. If you only read my articles for their humorous content than I would quickly click elsewhere. If you are afraid what guys think about feminist issues than I would also click elsewhere. Ok, I got that notice out of the way. Phew! Here we go: Being a stay-at-home-dad isn’t free from scrutiny but it also comes with praise. I think for every mom that has given me the cold shoulder there have been at least 3 more that applaud me for what I am doing. It really has nothing to do with my personal choice but rather a choice that was made by my wife and I years ago based on career potentials and level of benefits. One thing that I have noticed from staying home is that I have become acutely aware of how women are treated in society from my three daughters to my awesome wife. Things like clothes choices for toddler girls to Bratz dolls make me look at how society’s attention is focused on girls and how they look ...
