The Simple Rupee

There is nothing new under the sun,but there are new insights to be gained from rediscovering old ideas. When I was growing up in the 1960's,there were two things we were too embarassed (or scared) to talk about.Money and sex.No surprises then to learn that one of the best selling books at the time was 'Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Sex,But Were Afraid to Ask.'(You bet we were!).These topics were taboo in most households. You weren't supposed to ask,you were just supposed to somehow 'know'.In everyday life, most of us are far more worried about how we are going to pay the rent than we are about sex.So what I am going to talk about now is .........yes,you guessed right.MONEY.Money and love get mixed together in our everyday lives. There is an old song by the Beatles which says 'money can't buy me love'.But it sure can buy you a bouquet of roses for the one you love!Having the savings to make your dreams come true is just as important as having a healthy, loving re...

The Brave New World of Blogs.

The Brave New World of Blogs .This is what a program anchored bythe well known TV journalist,Barkha Dutt was called on  the NDTV show,WE the PEOPLE. It was aired on 13 January 2008.I wonder if any of you managed to watch it? The show comprised a group of 'experts' mainly journalists and on the other sidewe had some Indian bloggers randomly selected by Barkha I think. The topic of discussion was supposed to be whether blogs should be regulated or not.Well known faces like Jhoomur Bose (Emancipation of Eve) and Rajesh Lalwani of Blogworks  were there apart from  others who run personal blogs (The Compulsive Confessor and Sour Apple Martini). It was supposed to be an episode that took blogging seriously. But as the show went on,the anchor could be seen trying to rile the bloggers.I must say, they all stood their ground very well.Needless to say,as adults we don't always run to our parents ant tell them what we are doing in our daily lives.I think ...

Pictures from a Sunday drive
2008-01-15 00:54:00
In continuation of my previous post, here are some pictures I have resized and touched up with Visualizer Photo Resize. My eleven year old son took these pics while we were out for a Sunday afternoon drive.Fortunately,we still do get to see the sun and as you can see from the picture above, flowers are in full bloom which makes the surroundings idyllic.Hope you like them.I created the photo frames in Photoshop CS2.(Still learning the ropes !)This is a potted plant from our garden. The yellow streak you see above,is a smoke trail left by a Mig against the back drop of a setting sun.We were lucky to have spotted this one !

A handy piece of software
2008-01-11 17:10:00
With costs of digital cameras coming down, more and more people are opting for them.Once you've been bitten by the photo bug, there is no stopping  you from clicking all sorts of pictures. These multiple images can be easily tranferred to the computer and saved in a folder. However, resizing these photos using complicated software has always been a bit of a problem for me.And I'm sure for a lot of other people as well. While going through one computer magazine,I came across this nifty bit of software called Visualizer Photo Resize .I've been using Visualizer for some time now to resize my images. There is no reduction of the image quality that I can see.Best of all, you can batch resize images too.I personally think it is a great little software.Just thought I'd share it with you.It comes loaded with some more functions like automatic color correction and grayscale conversion as well. Here's the link to download a free version :Visualizer Photo Resize Give it a try !

Circa 1985.It was 8.30 p.m. on a chilly winter's night in New Delhi. My fiance and I had come here for a few days. This is the kind of weather when one thinks of hot 'pakodas' and hotter tea followed by a warm cosy bed.Ummm, you just snuggle in and....you get the idea,I suppose!Anyway, still being young and crazy at heart,we decided to take in a late night show at Chanakya cinema. If I remember correctly, the movie was Rambo.Sylvester Stallone was big then. Not the kind of movie one would like to see on a date but then we didn't have much choice !We were staying on Panchsheel Marg and Chanakya was the only cinema hall I knew which showed English movies. We took a 'rick' to the movie theater and bought ourselves bun 'maskas' and popcorn and sat down to watch a movie which went on to make Sylvester an icon.It must've been around midnight when it finally got over and we stepped out into the cold winter chill once more.I loved it then.Especially if you have someone you a...

A wonderful start

To begin with, here's wishing a happy new year to one and all. So,how was your first day of the new year?Good,I hope!Mine began the usual way.Morning ablutions, breakfast,a quick peek at the day's headlines and one final sip of green tea before dashing off to the car.I have my own family practice in a busy part of town.I had set it up after quitting the Army prematurely.Frankly, there have been no regrets about that.Like everyone else, even doctors love to be appreciated.Sadly,in today's busy world, very few people who have been treated and cured come back to tell you that they are all right. Not until the next time they fall ill,at least!Today,I was in for a surprise..After I had seen a few patients, one young man walked into my chamber. He looked familiar but I was  unable to place him immediately."Good morning, doctor, remember me?",he said."Uhh?",is all that I could utter."I used to study in college here five years ago. I had been very sick and you were t...

Reminds of the days of yore when people used to stand at a public execution and scream "OFF  WITH HIS HEAD"!

New Year Resolutions
2007-12-29 00:11:00
As the New Year rolls around, we all boast about our New Year’s Resolutions . We puff up our chest and announce with all the authority we can muster that we’re going to lose weight, stop drinking and partying so much, concentrate on work, and focus on working out more. Basically–for the most part, anyway–we look no further than our own noses. To add insult to injury, we usually don’t carry through with our “Me” resolutions. In a matter of months we’ve forgotten all about them and feel awful about ourselves. Perhaps we fail because we don’t set out goals high enough. What if we looked outward instead of inward when making our declarations? Would we then be able to finish the year feeling good about ourselves? Let’s think of a few resolutions that might last a year, or, dare we say it, a lifetime. Resolutions that make you feel good about yourself might include thinking of others instead of thinking in terms of what will ...

Time to Meditate
2007-12-25 02:53:00
What if you could close your eyes, then open them a few minutes later and be relaxed, alert, and able to think clearly? Great feeling,eh?Here are some Documented Benefits of Meditation I came across:Less anxiety.Decreased depressionReduction in irritability and moodinessBetter learning ability and memory.Greater creativity.Slower aging (possibly due to higher DHEA levels).Feelings of vitality and rejuvenation.Less stress (actual lowering of cortisol and lactate levels).Rest (lower metabolic and heart rate).Lower blood pressure.Lower cholesterol levels.Higher blood oxygen levels.A Simple Meditation To Use NowDon't think meditation has to be difficult. Try this simple technique, and you'll see results in minutes. Get comfortable, close your eyes, and tense up your whole body. Then breath deeply through your nose as you release the tension from every muscle. Feel each part relaxing, watching for parts that may escape notice, like a tight jaw. If you still have tension somewhere, tens...

India Shining..or is it?
2007-12-20 02:08:00
All in a day's work for these people. When I think of kids complaining about the 'yucky dal' or veggies,it burns me up!INDIA SHINING is what the media likes to say everytime the bull makes a charge in the stockmarket.Or an immensely successful industrialist wishes to buy an entire building comprising ten floors or more for his wife's birthday (of course, they do flip in that one buck into the waiting hands of a hungry urchin at the crossing. All is forgiven!)This is the face of INDIA no one really likes to talk about, especially if there is a 'fat-walleted' tourist lurking around.Sad,isn't it?Dogs compete with the woman for anything that is still edible. The things they collect are as telling as the expressions on their creased faces: bottle caps and shards of metal, plastic bags -- things they can sell or perhaps make something from. They sift through layers of plastic, metal and paper ."It provides us with what we need. Sure life is hard, but it's not s...

Keep your hands on the wheel
2007-12-19 01:59:00
Today,I have come back all fired up!Just got back from one of those network marketing shindigs some of you may be familiar with. These guys rock.Even if one does not follow their financial plans, one can come away with someting meaningful.Personally,Iget very motivated after one of these sessions.Just HAVE to share it with you. Here goes.... Everyone wants something in life, love, money, success, recognition ... Yet too many people fail to realize their desires, and nearly all of them for the same reason.  They seem to go whichever way the wheel turns, as if they have no control over their situation.  If their vehicle takes them to places they never intended to be, or crashes into the brickwall of utter despair, that's just the cruelty of fateI realize that truly horrible things do happen to people, and through no fault of their own.  Gigantic obstacles are placed in our way sometimes, that seem absolutely insurmountable.  Generally speaking, however, getting what ...

You can do it
2007-12-13 03:23:00
The late Norman Vincent Peale was a controversial preacher who burst into public consciousness with his best-selling book, "The Power of Positive Thinking". He believed that ordinary people could become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things, and when they believe in themselves, they have the secret of success. Any MLMer will tell you about the power of duplicatable systems. While much of this is true, and it is not always necessary to re-invent the wheel, many miss a very important point.A duplicatable system does not demand that you memorize a script. It basically means that you know your product, and have seen what has worked for others, and follow their lead. If you add your own ingenuity and your sales efforts, you will do even better. If you aren't the creative type, it really is best to follow a tried and true system. But if you are, you are selling yourself short if you don't branch out and develop some of your own techniques...
Living Dangerously
2007-12-09 21:31:00
It is said, pictures speak louder than words.I was passing by one of the 'posher' colonies in my town when I came across this  sight.I was amazed at the nonchalant way these women and children are going about their 'work' of sorting out the junk in jute bags for the kabariwala. As you can see, some of them have hung up their belongings on the fence surrounding this high-voltage transformer.I stopped and asked them why they are living so dangerously. The answer:"Mind your  own business!"Apparently, they have nowhere else to go. Really dangerous!

When I was a lieutenant in the army, my first car was a 1973 Standard Herald. Stop laughing! When I first bought the car it was quite sad looking. But hey, it was all I could afford !. I decided to save up enough money to give my 'swinger' a swinging look. So I saved, and saved every paisa for months. When I had enough money I first had the body of the car stripped, putty applied to fill in the rust holes and then finally sanded down before it would get a new paint job.I didn't have enough money for the paint job so I saved for another 3 months.  When I took my car in to paint, it turned out to be quite a bit more than the mechanic had stated , but that's a whole other story. Anyhow, the fateful day arrived when I went to pick up my car. Man, was I impressed! When I saw the guy pull up with my car, I couldn't believe how good it looked. For the first time I actually wanted people to see me driving it. I chose a gold, metallic paint that made the car spa...

Random Thoughts....
2007-11-30 01:31:00
Alright,I have inflated my deflated "tyres" to respectable levels again! I read once about a teacher who was given a list of student names with numbers ranging from 125 to180 after their names at the beginning of the school year. Believing that she had been given a class of gifted students, she worked hard all year to provide opportunities for these students to do well. At the end of the year she asked for another class of gifted students since they had all performed outstandingly. She was told that the numbers were their locker numbers, not their IQs!  It makes me so sad to see where our future is going. All you have to do is open your eyes to see how unhealthy, lonely and depressed many of our children are, this should not be the case. We live in a world where the potential to live fulfilled lives is at an all time high, so what's the problem? Why are our childrenkilling each other, having learning disabilities, being grossly overweight, virtually self-destucting?My ...

Imagine for a moment that your life is like a car and that each tire represents a specific area of your life. Now imagine that one of the tires is beginning to lose air. You can drive on that tire for some time with no problems, but then one day you will discover (and rather uncomfortably) that it has gone flat. You will constantly feel the thud, thud, thud of the tire trying to make its way down the road, AND if you don't stop, you will eventually wear the tire right out, and driving becomes impossible.Perhaps that tire represents the area of 'health'or 'happiness' in your life. Attention needs to be given to the tire . It has to be repaired and air needs to be put back into it before you can be on your way, unless of course you have a spare in the back of your trunk, and you can fix the problem quickly by just replacing it (ie. you just drink more coffee and eat more sugar to keep you going through the day, and just take another pain killer or antacid when the headache a...
