A friend of mine is in a quandary. This is what he had to tell me.I am relating his story in first person for ease of understanding.Right now, I really don't know what to tell him.Any suggestions? Here is his story:My wife of 35 years has fallen in love again with her old college boyfriend. I am 61, and she is 58. We have three grown children. Her boyfriend is 59, married, with two grown children. They had not communicated since college. A year ago they met at a class reunion. Since then, they have constantly talked on the phone. I know about their communication because my wife told me. However, last December my wife became secretive. One night I heard her saying "I love you" to him. When I confronted my wife, she admitted she loved him but she still loves me, too. She said she's not going to leave me and break up the family. She begged me not to leave or stop loving her.As a compromise we agreed he can call her once in awhile if he has important news about t...

Life Goes On

Boy, do I feel old. Or at least older. No, I didn't just have a birthday (well, that was in May).  No, my oldest child just had a birthday - she turned 20 last Friday (I have two kids - 20 and 11 ).Sure, I am not  that old, and neither is she. But this birthday - the 20th - is significant and is cause for reflection. "They don't get any younger," they say. And that is exactly my point. It seems like just yesterday I was playing tennis in school. Or getting my Senior Cambridge certificate. Or wooing my future wife. Or seeing my firstborn for the first time in that hospital in BangaloreAll of those things were great experiences and ones that I will only experience once. They were fulfillments of goals I had set or dreams that I had. They came, and they went. Now they are but memories. Can you remember yours?Soon enough this young lady of mine will graduate herself and be gone from our home. And her  little brother soon after that...

The Wandering Red Balloon
2007-10-07 00:29:00
Just when you think you know it all, some 19-month old kid comes along and teaches you another valuable lesson about life.My neighbour's daughter lost her favorite ball. There are few things that bring this 19-month-old more joy than playing with her favorite ball. And, of course, they want their daughter to have all the happiness she can get. So,my neighbour and I headed out to the  corner store to replace the missing ball. Little Lady enjoyed the outing, since there were so many exciting things to pull off shelves. And when we reached the ball aisle, she nearly jumped for joy. She picked up a shiny red ball and clutching it with both hands, headed for the cash counter. While waiting to pay, the young Lady caught sight of a red balloon that had obviously been used for some promotion, but was now wandering aimlessly around the floor like a lost puppy.Pure joy!If you think a ball can bring happiness, wait 'til you see the sparkle in the eye of a toddler wh...

The Worm in the Apple
2007-09-30 18:34:00
I had heard of the proverbial worm in the apple.Today I got to see it!Just as I was going to bite into a juicy looking apple, guess what popped out? This reminds me of a joke I read somewhere:What's worse than finding a worm in the apple you're eating?Finding half a worm!yechh.

The March of Civilisation
2007-09-28 01:18:00
This is how man repays a debt to his environment. This tree had provided shelter to probably thousands of passers-by in its life time.It was situated at the junction of three roads, well out of harm's way.In fact,it served the purpose of a 'gol chakkar'.Today,I was horrified to see this majestic tree falling to the axe .Who had it harmed? It had withstood  storms, earthquakes, and rains. In the summer months one could see people sitting under this tree to avoid the blistering  heat.In the rains, children gathered under it to avoid getting wet. Then why this sad demise?

I had joined IBIBO in feb 2007.Like all new bloggers,I found myself floundering with the first few posts. As time went by,a kind of rhythm set in .In my early days, like many  others ,even I resorted to a lot of c&p.IBIBO was different then.We had the TOP 10 bloggers and the TOP 50 and TOP 100 lists. There was a sense of urgency in posting.Sab kuch chalta tha.The score board  kept moving with every new post.Everyone used to get frantic when the end of the month approached. One could almost hear a collective sigh of relief as the clock struck 12!It was fun.    As is wont to happen, rumours about hacking began to make the rounds and IBIBO had to resort to changing not only the rules but even the payouts.A lot of c&p still persisted. As time has gone by ,IBIBO has finally begun to evolve into a wonderful blogging community. Now, one can see meaningful comments to posts.People have begun to respond genuinely and also share ideas through blogging....

Nobody is perfect. The important thing is that you are at least trying to help make IBIBO a better place. I think all of us just want to make IBIBO the best community blogging site out there. We should be  able to positively contribute to this site. It's really not that difficult. HOW the conversation takes place is not important;  THAT it takes place is.  Period.I can’t even begin to count the number of interesting people I have been able to connect with thanks to blogging here.  My horizons have definitely been broadened but the world has become smaller at the same time. These bloggers have brought humor, knowledge, insight and moments of reflection to my little corner of the world. Some of my ‘casual visitors’ have become trusted friends.  I have been so blessed by the companionship and inspiration I've found in  this blog world, I'm happy to be part of it. The Spirit is Alive
2007-09-20 00:06:00
It had rained heavily this morning. The roads were flooded and the footpaths had become slushy. As usual,I was driving home in the afternoon for lunch .This is the time which I really enjoy.I call it my 'down time'.Music is an obsession with me and I usually have a stash full of compact discs in the glove compartment.Today it was Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven' playing on the stereo.   As I turned onto the road leading to my place, one of those huge monstrosities they call an SUV(I think it was a Toyota)came speeding from the other direction. To save myself from certain annihilation at the hands of this 'metal box',I swerved to one side. The result was  unexpected.Someone had dug up the road embankment the night before and filled it loosely with mud.The morning rain had made it even worse. Two wheels of the car went off the road and into this slush. There was a heart stopping THUD and the car came to a halt and began to tilt over to the left. Before I knew wha...

Thinking outside the Cup and Saucer
2007-09-18 18:42:00
Just the other day, four of us went out for coffee to a nearby coffee parlour. Three ordered "regular" coffee, the fourth requested "decaf." Every now and then a waiter, carrying two pitchers, refilled the coffee cups and knowingly poured three cups from one pitcher and one from the other. He never asked who wanted which type of coffee. This had me foxed. As we were leaving, I asked the waiter how he knew which of us preferred "decaf." "Oh, that's simple, the three of you drinking "regular" coffee have black cups with white saucers. We serve "decaf" in white cups with black saucers." Instead of thinking outside the box these people have been thinking outside the cup and saucer. What an  easy solution! The waiter doesn't have to interrupt conversation, there is no mix-up or confusion, and everyone gets what they want. More importantly, it demonstrates how deeply the "customer satisfaction" thought ...

Mr or Ms Right

What the world needs now is love, sweet loveIt's the only thing that there's just too little ofWhat the world needs now is love, sweet loveNo not just for some but for everyoneI remember this song by Diana Ross with nostalgiaSongs have been saying it for generations together. Ask anyone what the world needs and the one answer you would get is-" love". We need love at all times. It is the basis of all our relationships in one form or the other. Despite knowing and understanding the need for it, we haven't been able to understand it well enoughSo,how in heaven's name do you find 'Mr Right' or 'Ms Right?'.Well look no more!Apparently, these guys have got it all worked out.Using the internet, one dating service, eHarmony, is able to learn about its members from the inside out and match them based on deep, meaningful characteristics. And I quote from their website:"eHarmony is the only relationship site on the web that creates compatible matches based on 29 dimension...

The Here and Now
2007-09-17 01:58:00
I just got back from Musoorie where my family and I  spent a weekend relaxing, re-energizing and revisiting the key values in our  lives. The place where we stayed is called Pleasant Valley. The view at the top -- a part of the Aravalli range -- is breathtaking. On the way down, I was in a hurry and going too fast .I nearly fell. I slowed down, took a deep breath, and placed my foot down carefully on the next rock, and then the next.  It took a lot for me to do this. But it turned out to be an amazing centering and meditative practice. One rock at a time -- that's all I chose to think about. And I was suddenly more aware of everything -- the sound of the wind, the chattering of birds and squirrels, and the light of the early morning sun .....it was amazing! When I got back,  I thought:maybe I could do this more often. Be right here, right now. . Feel the steering wheel as I drive. BE at the stop light...

Ants don't kill
2007-09-16 01:58:00
As a medical student ,I was doing a rotation in toxicology at the poison control center. This woman called in very upset because she caught her little daughter eating ants. I quickly reassured her that the ants are not harmful and there would be no need to bring her daughter into the hospital. She calmed down, and at the end of the conversation happened to mention that she gave her daughter some ant poison to eat in order to kill the ants. I told her that she better bring her daughter in to the Emergency room right away. The girl survived. But how can people be so ...........arrrrgh!

Meditation :For me it conjures up an image of my dad sitting in the lotus posture on a yakskin he had picked up in Ladakh while serving in the Army.I've been watching him do this ever since I can remember. He is 84 years old now.And still doing it! He calls it "taking a break" from real life,a means to get away from reality for a few minutes. In fact, it's been found that meditation is not just merely a "taking break"; there are so many things to be gained by doing meditation for just a few minutes a day. Here is a short list of ailments where it can help:Addictions, stress relief, pain management, hypertension, PMS, fibromyalgia, headaches, migraines and insomnia.Life threatening diseases such as heart disease, AIDS, autoimmune conditions and cancer may also benefit from the regular practice of meditation.Lowering blood cholesterol, improving your immune response.,decreasing heart rate.Among its psychological benefits, meditation is helpful in pati...
