The resource competition anxiety
2007-06-05 02:48:00 We have an innate core of molten resource-seeking competition for us (and our own). We may have an unbalanced and very sick society, but we are acting only in a Natural way considering the environment we live in. More About: Competition , Anxiety , Resource , Petit
The schmooze game
2007-05-25 22:46:00 A whole army of sub-gifted but slightly-more-intelligent-than-average process-makers and officious monkeys has risen up around the brain-dead schmooze game and tried to imbue it with procedures and checklists. These are the folks that renamed it, 'networking' and then (the lucky ones, anyhow) go on city-to-city talking tours after writing their obvious and repetitive books on the subject. They try to come up with personal goals and milestones. They talk as though they had invented the orgasm when they describe how they learned to talk like a networker--and YOU CAN TOO!!! Two more points
2007-05-23 02:24:00 I spend a little time clarifying two things about my 'resource' rant ... for whatever good it'll do. More About: Point , Points
The third world is coming to a lifestyle near you
2007-05-15 00:22:00 When it comes to resources, we are seeing the first faint whispers of the storm that will blow and crash as we just plain run out of things. Right now it's just rudeness in line-ups, but it's not going to stay that way forever. We feel panic because, deep down, we know that the competition will just get harder and stronger. Dispense this
2007-05-09 20:45:00 Well, the sinks may still be overflowing, and the coffee machine leaking, but, dammnit, now we can at least properly dispense our paper towels. More About: Ense
Soul-killing homogeneity
2007-05-05 02:00:00 Aren't we aware that 'efficiency' is a short-sighted narrow-minded 'small-picture' goal that actually endangers our future versatility? More About: Soul , Gene , Kill , Killing
Captor-bonded by work
2007-05-01 02:35:00 Just like nearly everyone else's, my resistance has been ground away ... just as it should have been. It is a lesson of life that all children of our culture start to discover on the first day of Grade 1 when they suddenly realise, 'Wow, I've been here most of the day doing stuff I probably wouldn't have chosen to do. And there'll be more tomorrow ... and tomorrow ... and tomorrow ...' More About: Work
Went to Vegas, baybee ...

More run, less sun
2007-04-17 02:40:00 Once again, my wife and I visited that ungodly and unnatural act of violence upon ourselves known as running the Vancouver Sun Run--the annual marathon that 50,000+ people regularly participate in. This year we actually liked it! More About: More , Less
Firehall foolishness
2007-04-14 00:10:00 Sure, go ahead and park your car in the fire engine's driveway. If there's an emergency, we'll just come find you to move it so we can get out. No, no, really, we insist! And have a great time at the travel agency planning your next trip to Aruba. More About: Fool , Fire , Hall , Ness , Foolishness
Marching to the Drum of Doom
2007-04-10 21:36:00 We think we face a dreary future looking a bit like Mad Max perhaps, or maybe just a whole bunch of overheated violent hungry people, and we think, 'We are so awful! We humans have seriously screwed up this planet, and there is nothing we can do about it except wring our blood-soaked hands and cry!' More About: March , Drum , Archi , Doom , Marc
Lou Reed wrecks the whole thing

Divorcification of sentience from verbiage
2007-03-27 01:32:00 Stephen Colbert had his "truthiness" (and what a fine word that is) and so, in his large footsteps, I try to follow with a coined word of my own. More About: Cat , Divo
We should take some time to sample the air up there
2007-03-15 00:35:00 If we remember always to keep compassion in our hearts, then our minds will always come up with an iron-clad notion of what is moral and what is amoral. More About: Time , Take , Here , Should , There

The 'whoosh' of the pendulum
2007-03-07 05:06:04 Quick, dirty, and harmless today ... I'm too busy to offer more than a hint about what I'm thinking of.

A case for not worrying so much about our apparently eroding English skills
2007-02-27 22:54:01 English is a dynamic living language, sure, but it's hardly so fragile that a few badly-written emails will utterly destroy it. More About: English , About , Worry , Case , Much
We are what we are, and we do what we do
2007-02-20 22:49:01 We get stuck into ruts and think that we can jump out of the ruts, not realising that what we are facing is one of the basic truths of our lives: If we define ourselves by our professions, we will eventually reach a stage of panic where we are compelled to redefine our professions in order to redefine ourselves. Phase Transition Peanut Butter
2007-02-12 22:42:02 Innovation comes to the lunch bucket. If you thought you'd seen just about every little pointless piece of minutiae that high technology could offer, then you clearly haven't thought about soggy sandwiches the way I have. More About: Peanut , Butte , Trans , Butter , Butt

The TP trigger to turmoil
2007-02-03 10:37:01 An emotional meltdown about the decreasing number of sheets of toilet paper in my roll can't ever possibly be construed as normal in this shallow, appearance-based, duplicitous arsehole-run-and-approved society, no matter how normal that behaviour really is.
Sorry, you didn't get anything you wanted at Alice's Restaurant
2007-01-30 22:35:02 This was supposed to be a diatribe about how we must resist the forces of evil in their mission to destroy the English language through the medium of the Internet. But it turned into a minor post-mortem of the 35-year-dead hippy movement. Go figure. More About: Restaurant , Rant , Want , Rest , Aura

I know it, I forget it, I relearn it, I know it, I forget it ...
2007-01-23 10:30:04 We might find ourselves saying something like, "It's not rocket science, people!" It's seductive to shout such self-serving admonishments. But we all forget the basic lessons in interpersonal dynamics--and, heaven knows, I'm no different. I write this to remind myself ... as a catharsis, not for anyone else, really. You can't kill someone you feel equal to
More articles from this author:2007-01-11 22:19:01 It all started with this thought: Only the truly certain build death camps. And I realised that that thought transcends all the usual suspects: not religious or political zeal, not territorial or lifestyle threats ... just those folks who are so certain of themselves and so certain of the wrongness of some other group that they can't tolerate being wrong about themselves.
