World?s Largest 76 Foot, 21,000 Pound Pencil
2007-09-28 14:40:00
Well, we did it and we had a blast! A bunch of guys from about 15 countries spent 2 weeks building the world?s largest pencil. It wasn?t easy. We had to make the pencil to scale, it had to look precisely like a normal pencil and it had to be made out of exactly the same materials. We used over 8,000 board feet of wood, 4,500 pounds of 10-inch graphite, which ran the length of the 76-foot pencil, and we even manufactured a 250-pound eraser. It took our two main carpenters a full day to sharpen the point of the pencil using a Sawzall, axes, and a grinding machine! The pencil was designed to commemorate Sri Chinmoy?s 76th birthday. Sri Chinmoy is a highly prolific writer and artist, so we thought presenting him with a giant writing instrument would be appropriate. About 10 years ago, we built a 20-foot pencil for Sri Chinmoy, but, a few years later, the European pencil company, Faber-Castell, constructed a 64-foot pencil to erase (pardon the pun) our record. I wouldn?t have thought of g...

2007-09-24 19:15:00
Dave Mullins claims he is an "unusually slow" swimmer, but with lungs burning and legs aching he smashed the world record for an underwater swim without a breath not once, but twice.Yesterday, the Wellington man swam 244 metres underwater on one breath, blitzing a record he set on Friday by 18 metres.Using a mono fin, Mullins swam nonstop for four minutes and two seconds, completing nearly five lengths of the 50-metre Naenae pool."You have to get it pretty much spot on," he said. "You're after maximum efficiency, so the turns are pretty important."Mullins said that though he was an "unusually slow" swimmer, the sport was all about lasting the distance.American judge Grant Graves said yesterday's effort at the freediving competition - hosted for the first time in New Zealand - was one of the biggest increases in a world record he had heard of. "It was a very impressive swim."Mullins said it would take a few days to recover from the rigours of busting world records because of the bu...

A bridge is to be built in a Chinese village where children are forced to cross a raging torrent on a steel cable to get to school.Nearly 500 children, from Maji village in Fugong town, Yunnan province, cross the most dangerous stretch of the Nujiang River each day. That would dwarf the current record-holder listed on the Guinness World Record s Web site, a pot of 1,413 gallons of spicy soup prepared in Durango, Mexico, in July.Oropeza called it ?Bolivarian stew? _ a play on the name of Chavez?s socialist movement, named in honor of South American independence hero Simon Bolivar. He said it was enough to feed 60,000 to 70,000 people.Workers stood on raised platforms stirring the soup with poles, and then dished out servings to a crowd at a state-run market. It contained 6,600 pounds of chicken, 4,400 pounds of beef and tons of vegetables.Addressing reporters next to the pot, Oropeza said the government is solving supply problems...

7 Underwater Wonders of the World
2007-09-16 11:44:00
A wealth of human history lies submerged in ancient cities at the bottoms of lakes, seas and oceans of the world. Some of these were sent into the water via earthquakes, tsunamis or other disasters thousands of years ago. Many have just recently been rediscovered, by accident or through emergent technological innovations. Some have even caused scientists to question the history of human civilization.Alexandria, Egypt: Off the shores of Alexandria, the city of Alexander the Great, lie what are believed to be the ruins of the royal quarters of Cleopatra. It is believed that earthquakes over 1,500 years ago were responsible for casting this into the sea, along with artifacts, statues and other parts of Cleopatra?s palace. The city of Alexandria even plans to offer underwater tours of this wonder.Bay of Cambay, India: A few years back discovered the remains of a vast 9,500 year old city. This submerged ruin has intact architecture and human remains. More significantly, this find predate...
