More Reasons To
2008-02-25 18:20:00
Two videos that should convince you, if nothing else, that Laurence Lessig is an extremely well spoken and educated man with his finger on the pulse of what is going on right now all around us. I Do [Love Space]
2008-02-22 18:36:00
As a follow up/addendum to the post earlier this week about a couple planning on traveling to Mars comes this slightly more realistic news item (as in, likely to actually succeed). Cindy Cashman and Mitch Walling plan on riding a yet-to-be-ready rocket from Rocketplane Inc., a Virgin Galactic-esque space tourism startup that offers quick jaunts into the upper atmosphere (and I guess slightly beyond) for a fee. To cover the costs of their trip, they plan on selling the rights to their wedding to a reality TV show, so expect to see a lot more about this one. They have set up a terrible website for the venture, but details are really scant right now, so I guess you’ll have to just do what I plan on doing- wait and see where this one ends up. Spulch spotted this one, so thank them not me. Good Copy, Bad Copy
2008-02-22 18:19:00
If you are at all interested in copyright issues (who isn’t right? Ladies??), this is the documentary for you. And if you are like me, and you think about this stuff all the damn time, go join the Facebook group dedicated to trying to convince Laurence Lessig to run for Congress. The world is changing in really big and so far mostly positive ways right now, it is an exciting time to be alive. Oh yeah, and this documentary is pretty good and brings up some good points on how broken and in need of improvement our copyright system has become. To The Moon Alice, To The Moon!
2008-02-21 18:57:00
Sick and tired of waiting around for NASA or someone else to finally land a Man on Mars? Yeah, so are Tom and Tina Sjogren. What are you going to do about it? Oh, wait some more? Well the Sjogren’s are going to launch their own mission to Mars. That’s right, they are planning (details TBA) on sending themselves to Mars by 2014, whether or not they can return seems to be one of those “TBA” details. They feel that the feat would require ~$100M to fund, which they think they can mostly acquire through sponsorships. The couple is no stranger to extreme expeditions, having scaled Everest and both Poles without assistance in the past. But seriously, this is some hardcore sh!t- they are basically approaching interplanetary travel as they would face scaling a mountain or visiting the South Pole. I seriously, seriously hope they succeed where the bureaucratic NASA is unlikely to even begin to venture for decades to come. If you know me or read this blog ofte...

Shadow Monsters
2008-02-21 18:05:00
Watch this video at YouTube This video is not as good as the one here or here, but you’ll get the gist enough from this version to decide if you want to see any more (I could not for the life of me find any good embeddable clips). Shadow Monster s is a program that takes shadows cast by its users and superimposes monster mouths and eyes and teeth and spines and other ghastly appendages onto them in real time. Basically it makes making shadows awesome, so much so that I would really love to see this developed into a home application. Using a webcam and tv or computer monitor, it is not inconceivable that something like this could be developed for the PS3 or or PC.  To see more, go visit the website of the creator of Shadow Monster, Philip Worthington. It is really interesting and well made, and I just realized that Worthington has created several art projects in the past that I liked, such as Art Bar and Wearable Warnings, and one that I was aware of but did not really car...

Cumulative Advantage
2008-02-20 18:54:00
This is a great read about how and why things become popular, using a theory called cumulative advantage. The gist: anything that is really popular got so via a combination of luck and timing. Of course there are many more aspects to any hit, be it fashion, technology, or entertainment, but the underlying assertion: …when people tend to like what other people like, differences in popularity are subject to what is called ?cumulative advantage,? or the ?rich get richer? effect. This means that if one object happens to be slightly more popular than another at just the right point, it will tend to become more popular still. As a result, even tiny, random fluctuations can blow up, generating potentially enormous long-run differences among even indistinguishable competitors ? a phenomenon that is similar in some ways to the famous ?butterfly effect? from chaos theory. Thus, if history were to be somehow rerun many times, seemingly identical universes with the same set of competito...

Fire Table
2008-02-20 18:02:00
How cool is this design! The Hunting and De Hoop Fire Table table has a place in the center to hold a candle, and the sides are semi-transparent to allow the candle’s light to glow all around. The center of the table is also cut out so it will heat anything that you put on top (tea, fondue, etc.), which makes it even cooler. I’d like to see this one in person, but my spidey sense tells me it’s a winner. Via Cool Hunting. ?Crushed?, Directed By Andy Cochrane
2008-02-19 18:40:00
I directed this 30min film in early 2002 as I was leaving film school, before the AV Club was even thought of, so it is not one of our shorts, but it is one of mine. “Crushed” is the story of how badly technology can screw up your life, especially if you try to hide behind it (it centers around a crush email that nearly destroys ). While this is not an autobiographical film, it is definitely a good peek at where my head was at 5 years ago, and stars a few AV Club regulars like Mark Rogers, Sean Bury, Bridget Brno, and Marty Quinn. I’ve been meaning to encode this properly and post it on the web, mostly so that it exists somewhere that those who want to see it can. “Crushed” is important to me for many reasons: It was the first ‘real’ short film with dialogue that I ever made, and was the closest to ‘real’ directing that I had done up to that point. It took almost 2 years to finish, and should not have. This film led to a co...

Long Tail Videos
2008-02-19 18:39:00
This is an interesting post that takes Chris Anderson’s “Long Tail” theory and applies it to creating, distributing, and hopefully profiting from films. If you are not aware of the theory, you should go get educated, it is one of the leading economic strategies/theories in practice today, and I personally feel it is a pretty accurate one. The long tail certainly applies to viewership of videos on the web, whether or not it applies to videos that cost money to watch, I do not know (a business model- that pesky little thing that we are all looking for). But it is worth thinking about; I certainly do. The above image is actually a snapshot of the stats for one of our videos, by the way, and it shows a pretty perfect long tail distribution of views over time, as all of our videos have so far. Pretty cool to see in action, and definitely lends some weight to the application of the Long Tail to videos! SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Long Tail Videos ", url: "http://min...

The Elephants Are Going Mad
2008-02-18 18:15:00
As we humans multiply at our ever-increasing suicidal rate, we are encroaching into the habitats of wild animals more and more. Our presence in their domain is pretty much never positive- we have made more animals extinct than we will really ever be able to count, and yet we continue to expand. There are lots of reports these days of wild animals and humans coming into contact in extremely negative ways, often with mutual loss of life, but none is as interesting as what is happening with the elephants. It seems that elephants recognize that they are being squeezed out, and they are fighting back: (more…) ShareThis
Incapacitating Flashinglight
2008-02-15 18:15:00
This flashlight uses super bright LED lights flashing in rapid succession to stop bad guys (hopefully) in their tracks. The light works on two fronts: The flashes temporarily blind a person, as any bright light would, and the light pulses, which quickly change both in color and duration, also cause… psychophysical effects. These effects, whose ...SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Incapacitating Flashinglight", url: "http://mint.theavclub.tv/feeder/?FeederA ction=clicked&feed=Articles+%28rss2%2 9&seed=http%3A%2F%2Fblog.theavclub.tv %2Fpost%2Fincapacitating-flashinglight 8;seed_title=Incapacitating+Flashinglight " });

So, Do You Guys Like Statistics?
2008-02-13 19:00:00
Fun Fact: If Rudy Giuliani gave all of the money he spent on his campaign to all of the people who voted for him in this year’s primaries, each voter would receive $142.83. Senators Love Telecoms More Than Your Privacy
2008-02-13 05:49:00
It’s pretty sad that I wasn’t even surprised when the Senate approved immunity for eavesdropping Telecoms today. What really disappoints me, though, is how many Democrats voted for the immunity. And we’re not just talking about a few nameless senators here.
