You know what's a REAL mystery? How they get all those Pringles to stack u
2009-02-20 23:29:00 Time for you to get up off your duffets and start using all those detective skills you've honed watching all those detective shows on TV. Yes, if you watch things like "Monk" and "Law and Order" and "How I Met Your Mother" (what? It's kind of a mystery!), or if you enjoy reading mysteries, or if, perhaps, you are an underemployed private investigator with time on your hands, the mystery lover in you can now do what you've always wanted to do: solve mysteries. You can do that through "5 Minute Mystery ," a new site that lets you join up, read a mystery, and then solve it to earn points and move up in the sleuthing rankings. (The site was featured on ABC news; you can see the video here.)Each Monday and Friday, "5 Minute Mystery" releases a new brief mystery -- clever ones, too, like the "Rhyming President's Mystery," a poem that asks you to determine which of the presidential paintings was lying (I like the poem, too). Solve the mystery and get points. The answers are posted t... More About: Real
Best Supervillains Who Deservedly Just Kept Coming Back And Should Keep Doi
2009-02-19 15:57:00 Ever noticed how supervillains never really go away? Whether it's a "mad scientist" or a "deranged Army general" or "Jeff Bridges stealing an idea for a suit, thereby creating a supervillain who would not have existed if not for the creation of the suit in the first place, serving as an ad hoc justification for the creation of the suit in the first place" type of supervillain, time after time, supervillains just keep on coming back. But do they deserve to come back? Ask yourself that. And ask yourself whether I used ad hoc correctly in that sentence above? While you're at it, ask yourself whether yesterday I tried to describe the rather alarming increase in a mortgage insurance premium as logarithmic only to learn that I meant exponential? The answers to those questions are, in reverse order: yes, probably, and Maybe not. Most supervillains who just keep on coming back aren't all that great to begin with. The Green Goblin? The Joker? Lex Luthor? The Dirty Bubble? What make... More About: Back
Whodathunkit?-- The Oscars: The 3 Best Things You REALLY Want to know abou
2009-02-17 16:01:00 This week on Sunday will mark the 81st Annual "Academy Awards," an event which is billed on their website as "The Biggest Movie Event of The Year," a declaration that comes just before a guy whose voice I almost recognize (Kevin Costner? No...) does a Hyundai commercial, which itself comes just before a guy who I completely fail to recognize talks about "The Road To the Oscars ."So apparently it's the Hyundai 81st Annual Academy Awards Brought To You By Hyundai, judging from the abundance of road and driving metaphors. (next up: We put the parking brake on some celebrities' plans to attend the awards, while ensuring that "Benjamin Buttons" has the highest safety rating according to Consumer Reports, just like a certain car that rhymes with Myundai.)This week on Sunday will also mark approximately the 38th time that I don't watch the Academy Awards; this year, I'm not even planning on tuning in for bits and pieces here and there. I just don't care much who wins these awards, ... More About: Things
The TBOE Roundup: This week's comments.
2009-02-15 15:07:00 While you were lingering over The Seven Best Songs That Show What Love Is Really Like, and while I was smoldering over the fact that scientists aren't happy with having jobs that don't require any actual work but instead have to go around inventing fake dinosaurs when there are perfectly good dinosaurs to serve as The Best Real Dinosaur, here's what others were looking at and what they were saying about those things they were looking at:Lamar was reading up on The Best Christmas Song, and had this to say:I know the worst Christmas song...Paul McCartney's Simply Having a Wonderful Christmastime"Just awwwweful! Um... Don't read this, Lamar.Meanwhile, "Anonymous" took in The Best Superhero, and put in his two cents' worth. (Should that be "two cent's worth," or "two cents worth" or "two cents' worth?" I'm not sure. Does it matter? Probably. Do I care? It's still early and my Red Pop doesn't have enough caffeine, so no.)I do agree, Old batman is my favourite, but he isn... The Seven Best Songs That Show What Love Is Really Like
2009-02-12 17:29:00 It's ART+LIFE(?) month!Love in music, in books, in Hollywood, tends to either be depicted as too good, or too bad. It comes in those two flavors, typically, the whole spectrum of love compressed down into the black and white of "love" as it's shown in "art."But "love" in "life" is not so simple. When, in life, do two people from different social strata meet on a doomed ocean liner and fall in love instantly and eternally? When, in life, has an oil-rig jockey ever had a secret affair with his boss' daughter that was disapproved of right up until the time when [ASTEROID-Y SPOILER ALERT!] his boss punches him in the head or something and then steps out onto the asteroid to sacrifice himself for the previously-disapproved of love between the guy and his daughter (and also to sacrifice himself to save the human race, but that was obviously secondary?)No, "love" in "life" is not so much people staring at the green light across the bay and throwing themselves onto the train tracks a... I'm going to get serious for a moment.
2009-02-12 17:27:00 If you read this or my other blogs regularly, then you may have gathered that when not making dumb jokes about things and/or boring you to tears with stories about my twins, I also sometimes practice law.Specifically, I practice "family and consumer law," which can be better explained as If something is negatively affecting you or your family, you should talk to a lawyer.I get the chance to help a lot of people day in and day out, and I like helping people. I also like talking about the law and explaining it to people, but I usually have to charge upwards of $200 per hour to talk to someone about the law and explain it to them. Now, though, I'm giving you a chance to find out a little more about the law and some of the interesting or helpful things about it, through my new blog, the boringly-but-accurately-named "Family And Consumer Law-- The Blog." The Best REAL Dinosaur.
2009-02-10 15:54:00 ART+LIFE(?) Month continues! With a new movie version of Land Of The Lost -- aka "Ricky Bobby Goes Back In Time" -- coming out, I thought it was high time to again review what we know about dinosaurs and what we only think we know about dinosaurs. But first, let me take a moment for this advertisement from our sponsor:Do you like to drink? Sure you do! But you can't just go around drinking and drinking and drinking without people saying stuff to you like "I think you have a problem" or "Who are you and what are you doing in my house?" No, the only way to drink responsibly these days is to make a game of it -- because there is no social habit so destructive that it cannot be transformed into good clean fun by making it into a game. But all the drinking games that currently exist are so played out. Mexican? Quarters? Bob? Pleh. That's why TBOE Productions is proud to present: Diablo Cody The Drinking Game (tm). The Best Way To Make Money, Apparently
2009-02-05 16:25:00 ART+LIFE(?) Month continues...I've spent a lot of time planning for how my kids are going to support me financially in the future, keeping close track of trends to make sure that not only will my kids make a lot of money, but that they will do so in a manner which I find the most enjoyable. That's why, for a long time, I had planned for at least one of my kids to be a left-handed relief pitcher in the major leagues, and the other to be a quarterback for the Buffalo Bills. I would be their agent and would spend my time going to watch my kids play sports while taking a generous, let's say 20%, cut of their earnings. That had its downside, though -- first, it would require that I spend time watching baseball games, which no person in his right mind wants to do more than about once every two years, and then only when he absolutely can't get out of it and has to go because his Dad insists and has already bought the tickets. Second, it would require that I go watch football games in B... More About: Money , Make Money , Make

A few things missing. I'll tell you what they are.First, you're missing out on relevant results. What good are a hundred bajillion answers if you don't know which answer is the right one for you? Do you trust Google to make that decision for you? Do you even know how Google does that? I don't. For all I know, Google rankings are created via chimps-playing-darts. I mean, if that's a good enough system for the Electoral College to use, why wouldn't Google use it?If you don't want your search results ranked by chimps-playing-darts, how do you want them ranked? 2009-02-05 00:45:00 The newest fan of my work on Digg, Aloo-Ha, hails from San Francisco -- one of the greatest cities ever, even if the cable cars do break down a lot -- and is 23 years old. That's all I know about him. That, and he's my friend on Digg, and he had the good taste to declare himself a fan of mine.So look him up and tell him you're a fan of mine, too.Oh, and he knows how to take a creative profile picture, which is a rare talent. I foresee a day when an entire industry springs up to create profile pictures that are instantly identifiable, project information about the person, and are unique. We'll do away with head shots and pictures of babies and kittens, and instead, will use our new, professionally-designed profile pictures, as a sort of coat-of-arms. And Aloo-Ha will lead the way. MEGA makes kids' toys, so I was naturally interested in the site. I mean, for the Babies! I was looking for toys for the Babies! And in the course of that, I stumbled across what might be one of the most addictive video games out there. I mean, if you thought video games were great before you played this one, you'll be amazed. It seems so simple: create an account, and the next thing you know, you're in this virtual world where you're represented by a ball-shaped avatar (you can get points in the game to customize yourself.) 2009-02-04 18:09:00 The only ads and commercials people like are Super Bowl ads, right? That's what I decided this week, when I watched the big game on DVR, but refused to fast forward through the ads. Deliberately watching the ads was a big change for me -- because I spend so much time trying, otherwise, to avoid commercials. I listen to music on my iPod, I DVR all my TV shows, I make Sweetie pre-read magazines and remove the ads for me...... well, I SHOULD...... and as a result, I successfully avoid most advertising. Except for pop-up ads. I sit at my computer and I'm barraged with pop-ups and pop-unders and probably pop-asides or pop-acrosses or whatever's next. That's why I'm excited to try the new free version of "AdMuncher." The AdMuncher people say it'll block ads in Explorer and Firefox -- I use both -- plus a lot of other browsers, and that it "Kills unwanted popups." I like that: KILLS them. Plus it takes out advertising in other programs like LimeWire and Kazaa, and they say it ... More About: Hope , Plan B , Plan

2009-02-03 17:33:00 Does life imitate art? Does art imitate life? The Five Best Things About The Suburbs, As Proven By "The 'Burbs," And Whic
2009-02-03 15:44:00 It's ART+LIFE(?) month!I have, in my life, lived in a variety of places. I lived in an apartment as a young kid. I lived in the suburbs as an older kid. I lived in a horrible, serial-killer infested part of a city as a college student, in a dormitory in Washington, D.C., in a family's apartment in Morocco, on the bad side of a college town, and, now, again, in the suburbs. So if anyone's qualified to talk about what's great, or not great, about the suburbs, it's me. Not some hack writer, not some old lady that might have witchlike powers, not people who imagine there is a dark side to the suburbs. There's not. There's no terrible awesome soul-crushing despair emanating from quiet, tree-lined streets, mowing down dreams and aspirations and artistic talent like some kind of monstrous Katamari. And, frankly, I'm tired of hearing that there is something wrong with the suburbs. I'm especially tired of hearing that there's something wrong with the suburbs from people who ... The TBOE Replay: Yep, you're still sad.
2009-02-01 16:06:00 I have a few theories about why, for the second month in a row, "The Best Sad Song" is the most popular post on this site, garnering 602 individual page views. Those theories are:1. It's because Obama wasn't sworn in until January 20, and laid low before that. Without that sunny smile and hopeful eyes, people were left miserable. I bet next month, The Best Happy Song will top the list.2. Brigitte Marquardt has this site bookmarked, and is using that song to get over her heartbreak. My money's on the second one.The TBOE Replay tells you, at the end of each month, which post was the most popular the month before. Introducing... Whodathunkit?
2009-01-29 18:32:00 What's Whodathunkit? When I used to do my sports blog (which I don't do anymore; now it's this) I came to realize that for all major sporting events, the newspapers, tv shows, and blogs were all saying the same things. Predictions, analyses, interviews with ex-jocks... all boring. I can watch the game. I can (and did) prove that expert predictions are no better than arbitrary and random picks. I don't want to hear anymore about a linebacker's mom getting a house. So I didn't talk about those things. Instead, I talked about the things I wanted to know, and since wanted to know about them, I assumed everyone else did, too. Thus was born Whodathunkit? , a compendium, for every major sporting event, of a couple of facts that nobody else was bringing up, but which would be endlessly entertaining while watching the event.Whodathunkit? was too good an idea to let die, so I've imported it here, and now Whodathunkit? will periodically give you The Best __ Things You Want To Kno...
Whodathunkit? -- Superbowl XVLEIRALVERHIII: The 3 Best Things You Want To
2009-01-29 15:24:00 Once again, America's got Superbowl fever, although this year there's a bit of a twist to our obsession with watching a game that starts too late, is frequently too boring, and also should be played on a Saturday.I could tell things are different this year because when CNN/HLN-- why the change to initials on "Headline News?" Was saying Headline News slowing down the actual delivery of those headlines? And doesn't it take just as long to say "HLN" as it does to say "Headline News?" Maybe a little longer, because "HLN" is full of soft sounds that make me sort of pause between them, or they sound slurry, the way "Saturday" sounds slurry if you pair it with another word. Try that: Say Saturday, and notice that you hit all the consonants. Then say Saturday Night Live. Unless you concentrated, I bet you said something along the lines of Saerday because you were rushing through Saturday to get to Night Live.Unless you are Chinese, and spoke in Chinese, in which case you said:???A... The 10 Best Songs That Make You Feel Good (And Then Feel Bad About Feeling
2009-01-27 16:05:00 Have you ever been driving along, enjoying yourself (enjoying yourself as much as you can on the commute into work, that is) and humming along with the pleasant, bouncy, upbeat song playing on your iPod, and all of a sudden you remember that this song, the song that's putting you into a good mood and making you hum happily and look forward to the day ahead of you, the song that's actually helping you enjoy your day just a little more, is about Oedipus' mother, and also that the first stanza is, so far as you can tell, about feeding a stillborn child to the wolves?Music's funny that way. It works on a bunch of different levels on us, revving us up and calming us down and using the complex interplay of melody and lyrics and rhythm to create sometimes not one emotion, but several -- which may or may not be the point of the musicians were trying to make. Maybe they were trying to confuse your emotions and create a sort of meta-feeling in you, maybe they weren't. Maybe, after all... More About: Songs , Make , Good , Feeling , Feel
The Best Pizza Topping
2009-01-13 19:02:00 Yesterday, I had a lot of time to think. And this topic is one of the things I thought about. Specifically, here's what happened: I was driving home from Milwaukee, about a 1 1/2 hour drive, and I put on the song "This Guy's In Love With You" performed by Herb Alpert & His Tijuana Brass. You know the song, right? And as I listened to that song, this thought suddenly occurred to me:When does a thing stop being that thing and start being something else?Which doesn't immediately, I know, make sense, but it will, if you bear with me as I do a little thought experiment.Picture a ray. You remember "rays" from math class in high school, right? A line extending from a point in space off into infinity, represented by an arrow with a dot at one end. Yeah, the middle one. Picture that ray, and assume that point "C" represents "pizza" the way "pizza" originally was intended to be represented, like, say, this:And maybe that's not your idea of a pizza. Maybe your idea of a pizza is somethi... More About: Pizza , Topping

Welcome some new readers, and Kate is very smart.
2009-01-13 16:01:00 The Best of Everything is pleased to welcome two newly-identified readers.First up is Tudor Constantin, who, like me, has a couple of blogs that he writes. Kate read "The Best Part of the Song 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight,' and in the great tradition of me and people who think like me, Kate ignored all the window dressing and went right to the heart of the matter: explaining the yam. She writes:Your sweet potato is NOT a yam. 2008-12-31 15:42:00 Every month, I check the statistics on this site to see what it was people were looking at in the month before -- seeing what it is you liked and what it is you didn't. I've decided to share that with you, from here on out, so at the end of each month, you'll get the "TBOE Replay ," highlighting the most popular nomination from the month before. This past month, December 2008, you were looking at and searching for "The Best Sad Song ," the original nomination of which you can find by clicking this link.Which made me wonder. That was my most viewed page in December. Three of the five most popular searches leading people here in December had the words "Sad" and "Song" in them.So why was everyone in December looking to hear sad music? Just thinking about the reasons makes me sad, a little, too.So to you readers who were looking for sad songs as we went into the holidays, I hope that in 2009 I can help cheer you up just a little.

Sears created a wish registry where our fighting men and women, men and women who are in Afghanistan and Iraq and other trouble spots, ducking bullets and avoiding land mines instead of hugging their daughters and snuggling with their wives, where those men and women can post the things they would LIKE to buy for the wives and husbands and sons and daughters and nieces and nephews and moms and dads -- like to buy, but can't, because they're off fighting and because they don't have enough money. That's where you come in. The Best Christmas Song That Is Not Even A Christmas Song But Which I Am J
2008-12-22 18:34:00 What makes one "tradition" better than the other at Christmas ? What makes one thing Christmas-Y and another not, aside from the inclusion of the word "Christmas" in it?Yes, think about that for a while, and then think about it some more. Why are some things deemed to be "Christmas-Y" and some things are not. The only criteria I can think of, the only objective criteria that can possibly separate something that is "Christmas-Y" from something that is not "Christmas-Y" is the inclusion of, or mention of, the word "Christmas." Because everything else we've come to associate with Christmas is associated with Christmas for the sole reason that we associate those things with Christmas. That is, chestnuts roasting on an open fire are Christmas-y because we've made them be so. There's nothing that I know of that says that chestnuts, or fires, or roasting, is particularly associated with Christmas, that we can only have chestnuts in December or that people don't light fires other ti...
