Indian IT Industry Globalizes itself
2007-09-27 20:05:00 I had an interesting experience listening to A.T.Kearney consultants giving a talk on Globalization in IIM Lucknow. Now in yesterday's article on Infosys,Wipro,TCS outsourcing work to other countries which was a news which came through New York Times I had thought that it was a usual but a short-term strategic move from these companies. But as the A.T.Kearney guys told us it seems that most of the businesses in Indian BPO and software sector are moving towards globalization with a need for being closer to their clients and being able to offer them end to end solutions thus getting more out of their clients.Interestingly they were also of the view that most of the Indian globalization is a combination of opportunistic moves rather than a great tactical moves.Well this made me realize that what seemed a PR exercise by Indian IT firms is actually a move by these firms is actually a move to go closer to the customers and thus taking a step to become more global though i still find i... Infosys Wipro TCS Cognizant start outsourcing work
2007-09-26 10:58:00 New York Times has an article on how now Indian software companies have themsleves begun outsourcing work to other parts of the world. Now this news comes after the fact that HCL already had done a branding campaign and Infosys,Wipro and TCS had also started branding themselves. These are the signs of how these software factories are adapting thmeselves to the changing realities. Even though they still get million of resumes they don't get the best talent in India which goes to the higher salary paying startups and Multinationals and so they are left to fight the battle .Now they are adopting the same strategy in internationallly by hiring people with no software skills thus available at low costs and then training them and who will jump the ship when they get a better offer still it is a good short term strategy that will work and help them fight competition. Some exercepts from the article which seems to be another work of Infosys's marketing team in actionTo fight on the shift... More About: Outsourcing , Work , Start , Cognizant

Skype Looking towards India for growth
2007-09-21 20:24:00 Mint has a very interesting report it seems that Skype , an eBay Inc. Internet telephony company, is facing manpower shortage stemming from a talent crunch in the relatively small population, coupled with strict European Union hiring restrictions. In case you missed it Skype recently had a severe outage which threw its worldwide operations out of gear.?Right now we have survived but we are not sure about the future,? claims a company spokesperson. ?It may certainly have some effect on our projects. The strict Estonian laws do not promote hiring from outside the European Union.?Skype says it has been lobbying with the Estonian government to relax hiring laws. ?We are trying to talk to the government about employing talent from overseas including India . Now, they have started listening to us,? the spokesperson added. Now this is another opportunity for Indians to showcase their skills in cutting edge technologies rather than letting their talents being exploited by Indian software facto... More About: Growth

2007-09-20 13:37:00 Arvind Mills owned Wrangler brand underwent a rebranding exercise using new age media and viral marketing concepts.Wrangler had decided to shed its rustic image to take on a chic urban look and since its target audience is slick city youth besides traditional marketing it also adopted several below-the-line strategies and ?new? technologies such as mobile phone communication, online media and mall marketing. Google India's Adwords push
2007-09-19 11:30:00 Last year in November Googl e launched its online sales and distribution office in DLF Cyber city in Gurgaon and now it seems that Google is aggressively expanding this office it is now recruiting quite heavily not only from Metros like Chennai and Delhi but also even from tier 2 cities and has just announced a visit to Lucknow in today's Accent. Google is not only trying to capture the growing Hindi market but is also using this center for outsourcing some of the work for foreign markets.Google is bullish on India and is well known amongst the techies but since the kind of work it asks of its AdWords Representative is not technology specific it seems to be having a tough time attracting the right talent this is why it even started trying to promote its brand to attract good hires in India even through mall promotions like this promotion at Rajouri Garden in City Square Delhi (via GigaOm.) Marketing an idea
2007-09-10 11:52:00 In a world of too many options and too little time, our obvious choice is to ignore the ordinary stuff. Marketing guru Seth Godin spells out why, when it comes getting our attention, bad or bizarre ideas are more successful than boring ones. And early adopters, not the mainstream's bell curve, are the new sweet spot of the market. It is so attractive to try to sell it to the mass which is in the center of the bell curve but they will ignore you because of the clutter but when you are a Steve Jobs selling an iphone and all the early adopters and innovators are tuning into you to listen to what you have to sell then you become successful."We need to sell to those people who care" this and all the different ideas and ideas from Seth Godin in this video More About: Idea
HCL makes Lame efforts at Branding itself
2007-09-07 09:25:00 I wrote about how Indian software factories (IT companies) are starting to brand themselves and I recently came across an effort by another Indian software factory HCL making a lame effort to promote their brand in an ad of all places on Aaj Tak.The ad shows a young hitchhiker hitching a ride from an investment banker on a lonely highway stretch and makes a laughable comparison of an i banker with a software engineer with the software engineer coming out on top .Now I like the way how they promote it on youtube with a dedicated brand HCL channel but the ad itself is way over the top with the ad going on to show that software engineer goes on to onsite with a personal helicopter which was way too much for me.Now it is true that most software engineers leave their jobs for doing an MBA and dream of becoming an investment banker but to show completely opposite of that is taking it a little too far from reality and if you really intend to promote the company you should have tried doing... Yahoo Kickstart Social Job Network for students and alumni
2007-08-31 17:21:00 Yahoo is testing a new job based social network "Kickstart" which aims to connect college students with alumni at the companies that they are interested in a very powerful concept i can say this because alums are the best way to know about the jobs that you are interested in and Kickstart also provides a chance for alums to do something for the college they passed out from.Overall look of Kickstart seems very professional and Linkedin type however Kickstart is still in concept stage and they are still testing Kickstart in universities. Kickstart is a very solid concept and a game changer all those job websites and social networks like our own techtribe, ndtv jobs and minglebox must sit up and take notice. Kickstart is quite a concept and when backed by yahoo can seriously change job networking this is a direct threat to linkedin.A detailed review of Yahoo Kickstart is available at News.com More About: Marketing , Social , Social Networking , Yahoo , Students

Viral Marketing the Google way
2007-08-29 20:05:00 Google sometime back had released a collaborative video of Gmail and had asked users to imagine how an email message travels across the world and post their own videos on the same theme. Now this is a very unique and viral way to promote its weaker link Gmail which is not as popular as compared to other mail services like a yahoo mail as well as to tap into user creativity and promote video making on Youtube and to add to it Google has posted the locations of users by mashing it up with a Google Earth API thus a three way cross brand promotion and all without spending a dime. From a marketing point of view the key in fact is the Gmail logo in the shape of an envelope which is being passed around in the video and that is very visible throughout the video through which Google is trying to create a subconscious brand appeal for Gmail. We really have a lot to learn from them even in terms of marketing. You can check out the final video which was combined after nearly 1100 video submissio... TCS,Wipro,Infosys Start Branding themselves
2007-08-28 03:32:00 Business Standard reports that India's software factories have finally realized the importance of branding and marketing themselves to the world.I had always been amazed at how little branding do these companies engage in compared with a Accenture or a IBM . Branding means applying a trade name to a product or service. It also refers to developing awareness of the name. You will always associate Accenture with "Go on be a Tiger" and Tiger Woods that is successful branding for Services company. Only when they are able to brand themselves can a company move up the value chain and gain higher margin on revenues.Currently, investments in branding initiatives are less than one per cent of their revenue budgets however they have doubled in recent times.Sudin Apte, senior analyst and country head, Forrester Research, says that? There is a myopic view about marketing. We believe firms need basic, fundamental marketing like segmenting, tagging, articulating the message and differentiation, ... More About: Technology , Start , Wipro , Infosys

HUL had already done the same tactics with a better song called FridayNight fever on MTV which... More About: Video , Campaign
