Web 2.0 Expo
2008-04-26 20:44:00 We are cranking along in our new digs in Palo Alto, yet took some time to enjoy the sunshine and buzz of local events. Web 2.0 Expo provided a plethora of meetings and parties throughout Silicon Valley. The Bay Area has long been known as the epicenter of technology innovation and we enjoy the benefits of rubbing up against the best and brightest in the world of software. The Web 2.0 Expo made it quite clear that some of the basic ideas that we think of as Web 2.0 are slowly becoming the key future add-ons to enterprise software products. While it is great to see that the corporate software types are starting to "get" the web, some of their products looked a little like dogs dancing in dresses. Familiar, but a little disturbing, and not exactly what I would call a mashup. It was also interesting that only a few products looked tailored to their audience. The wild developer-centric buzz of last year was fading and the mainstreaming of Web 2.0 is well at hand. The SNAP con...

Physician Leaders
2008-03-15 20:39:00 Physicians are facing challenges at every turn…lower reimbursements, higher malpractice insurance rates and an increasingly litigious public just to name a few of the challenges. In his recent USA Today article, Dr. Kevin Pho does a terrific job of describing another major systemic challenge; a lack of primary care physicians. I am proud of the fact that iMedExchange has been a supporter of Dr. Kevin, as he is commonly known. A prolific blogger, and general conveyer of common sense, he’s an exemplary leader through his writing. As the iMedExchange online community for physicians evolves, we are privileged to associate with, and hopefully support, the hundreds of thousands of physicians making a difference in their respective community. I welcome you to join the community and share your thoughts and opinions with physician colleagues in a safe and engaging environment. More About: Leaders , Physician

Avenue A / Razorfish 2008 Digital Outlook Report
2008-02-28 01:56:00 If you believe Bill Gates, as we do here at iMedExchange, the future of the Internet is intrinsically tied to advertising. We think this fundamental shift in advertising is not only significant for the future of the Web…but one that can greatly benefit consumers. It benefits the user because high-value content and experiences can be consumed with little to no out-of-pocket expense. Further, the user is always in control. In a recent blog post, Guy Kawasaki presents some observations about the recently released Avenue A/Razorfish (now Microsoft) 2008 Digital Outlook Report . This report is closely watched throughout the advertising industry and it provides keen analysis of where the market has been and insight into where it’s going. While we generally like to let our actions do our bidding, I can confidently commit to this: the new ecosystem we are about to release, exclusively for physicians, will leverage some of the key shifts already underway in the online world, and expan...
iMedExchange Opens Silicon Valley Office
2008-02-25 22:39:00 iMedExchange is working hard to create the most useful online place for physicians. To that end, we just opened our Palo Alto, California office. This office creates a strategic presence for the company in the heart of Silicon Valley and gives us access to some of the top web development and Internet marketing talent on the planet. Now, we get the best of two top-tier technology markets in Seattle and Silicon Valley. For the past 6 months the team has worked in an interim facility in the heart of San Francisco, but growth of the team required a larger more accessible space. Congratulations to Chip Vanek, our VP of Engineering and the growing team based in Palo Alto, CA! More About: Office
What is Google really thinking?
2008-02-18 19:32:00 As President of iMedExchange, I follow most of the happenings among Internet-related businesses in order to understand how innovation occurs in our industry. Internet-related businesses are a terrific example of an extremely large and consequential industry that is still very much influenced by individual innovators. Recently this same industry has been making quite a fuss about the Microsoft offer for Yahoo, and then of course Google ’s offer of assistance to Yahoo to escape the clutches of Microsoft. What is really going on here, I asked myself. Is Google really trying to help Yahoo to avoid falling prey to a $46 Billion acquisition? Without too much preamble, let’s be clear. This is not necessarily the worst thing from Google’s vantage point. Consider, if you would, a bit of whimsical or at the least, a counter-intuitive and more Machiavellian explanation of the behavior we are witnessing. First, why does one think Microsoft is trying to buy Yahoo? Obviously, for the... More About: Thinking
January Seattle Startup Index Update
2008-02-07 20:34:00 iMedExchange continues to climb the Seattle Startup Index ... without yet even trying! I'm not sure what this says about the Index but I'll opt for the charitable view: i.e., that we're moving up in advance of our formal attempt to recruit members simply because we've captured the imagination of our market place. In any case, we continue to fire on all cylinders and are gathering lots of momentum. The results from January : we moved up five positions to 138 out of 260 on the overall ranking, 25 out of 39 in the Web Business to Business category (WBB) and 124 out of 206 among all web-based startups. We'll continue to have fun watching our ranking, especially as we begin to actively seek out new members. As an aside, I noticed that skillbit (the company founded by the Seattle Startup Weekend that I mentioned in my last post) debuted at position 134 out of 260 -- actually ahead of iMedExchange! I know that the skillbit team has some smart folks working to ensure search engi... More About: Update
Seattle Startup Weekend
2008-01-29 00:33:00 I spent this past weekend with about 120 other Seattle startup enthusiasts at Startup Weekend , a 54-hour marathon to build a web product company from concept to launch in a single weekend. Startup Weekend was founded by a group of entrepreneurs in Boulder, CO, just last summer and already the concept has been executed in a total of 14 cities in the US, Canada and Europe. The organization, and the Weekends, are run by Andrew Hyde. The Seattle Startup Weekend team built SkillBit.com, a tool that helps groups better understand and leverage the skills, knowledge and experience of its members. The team was divided into core groups representing software development, business development, sales and marketing, program management, user experience and graphic design. For my part, I was home-roomed with the user experience team but had privilege of working as a liaison and contributor to virtually all of the teams. Startup Weekend was a great opportunity to connect with the local start...
MDNG Partnership
2008-01-22 01:03:00 We announced a new partnership with MDNG New Media on Friday. Their banner is now on the iMedExchange home page, and our Drs. Stanley and Patel are featured in a rotating banner on their site. Welcome MDNG visitors! Here's the announcement of the partnership. And here is our information as you'll see it on their site:
Bonding time
2008-01-15 23:31:00 The development team in San Francisco came up to our Seattle offices for a few days of meetings and fun times. The pictures of the meetings are pretty boring, but we all dressed up one night and went to Teatro Zinzanni - and that picture is exciting enough to share. What a great event! If you're ever in Seattle, I highly recommend it. We even got Tobin to wear a boa - now that's a good CEO. Thanks for the visit guys - hope to see you again in person soon! More About: Time
Blue Friday
2008-01-12 03:42:00 Today in Seattle is Blue Friday in honor of the Seahawks upcoming playoff game this weekend. Despite public opinion, we at iMedExchange are very excited for the seahawks and think they have a great chance at Green Bay this weekend! Here we are showing our pride. I know it looks a little strange that a bunch of us tried to stand in one cubicle. We really wanted a picture with the 12th-man-flag on top of the Space Needle in the background. That didn't quite work out, so here's a separate picture of the flag. Please use your imagination and picture one very dramatic, award-winning photo with all of us standing in front of the space needle and flag. Go Hawks!!
iMedExchange Still Climbing
2008-01-07 23:40:00 iMedExchange continued to move its way up the Seattle Startup Index to close out 2007 at position 143 out of 243, up 10 spots from the previous month. This is especially good news since we have yet to even publically lauch or even do much at all in terms of marketing! Of course, the SSI is hardly a statiscally accurate indicator of... well anything. But it's fun to watch and I thank Marcelo Calbucci at Seattle 2.0 for keeping it going month after month. Happy New Year
2008-01-01 20:25:00 Happy New Year everyone! I have been fortunate to spend the past several weeks enjoying the snow in Colorado with my family, but I am excited to get back to work preparing to officially launch iMedExchange in just a few short months. Reflecting back on 2007, the growth of our team and of iMedExchange has been rewarding. While we have been in various stages of Beta development, the enthusiasm from physicians has been very encouraging. Doctors of all practice types, specialties and geographic regions have joined us in our goal of building the most useful online resource for physicians. We have a ton of work to do in the coming months, and I look forward with great anticipation to reaching our goal. From the iMedExchange team, I wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year! Poker 2.0 charity event
2007-12-20 18:15:00 On Tuesday night we hosted another poker night for Seattle area technology startups. The turnout was once again fantastic, with 17 fun folks representing more than a dozen different startup companies. The final table battled it out until 10:15pm when finally Casey Muller (JamGlue.com) emerged as the winner and claimed the first place prize. Second, third and fourth place finishes went to Shan Sinha (DocVerse.com), Jeff Khadavi (stealth startup), and Phuc Vu (InCampus.com). Thanks to the great suggestion of Marcelo Calbucci of Sampa.com we reserved a seat at the tables for charity. Marcello recently implemented a charitable donation feature on his web site that makes it effortless for users to make charitable donations. For our part, we set up a side pot that everyone could donate to and then we let the winner chose a charity to send the money to. We're going to use Marcelo's web site to make the contribution -- which turned out to be $45 this time. The night's winner, Cas... More About: Poker , Event , Charity

New build is up
2007-12-10 19:10:00 The new build we've been working on was released on Friday. Doctors can now participate in Clinical forums on iMedExchange! Another new forum category I'm excited about is Residency forums. This is a place for residents to talk to each other about issues like fellowships, finances, life as a resident, and their future plans. We also have a place in the residency forums called 'Pearls' which is a place for residents and more senior doctors to share 'pearls' of wisdom they've learned along the way. I know we have some new resident members joining us, so welcome to you, and let us know if there's anything we can do to help! More About: Build
What's Going On There?
2007-12-07 00:33:00 I know the blog has been kind of quiet the last week, and I thought I'd take a minute to say 'we're still here'! We've been so busy working on our next release, so it's all we've been focusing on. It's an exciting release coming up - we'll have Clinical forums, which lots of doctors have been asking us for, so I'm really looking forward to everyone being able to see it. I can't give you an exact time, but it's coming soon, so if you're a member - keep checking in! More About: Goin
On the Way Up
2007-12-05 18:50:00 Last month I told you about iMedExchange’s debut in the Seattle Startup Index. Today I’m happy to report that the December rankings are out, and we’ve jumped up 21 spots. iMedExchange is now ranked at #146. I’m looking forward to next month report on how much farther we’ve jumped.
Mars, Bridges and the Confederate Flag???
2007-11-29 04:27:00 Tonight, CNN hosted the CNN/YouTube Republican Presidential debate from Florida. Despite the fact that healthcare is listed in virtually every recent poll as the most pressing issue on the minds of Americans, CNN failed to pick one question on the topic of healthcare to pose to the candidates. Physicians from all over the country have made the effort to formulate and upload questions for the presidential candidates. While CNN was given a slow pitch right over the plate, they selected questions related to Mars exploration, bridge repair and the flying of the confederate flag to name a few…issues which clearly pale in comparison to healthcare. Although I am sorely disappointed in CNN’s editorial work, we know the 2008 presidential candidates understand that the healthcare topic is of vital importance. iMedExchange continues to get responses directly from the candidates and welcomes those forthcoming. My Bite out of the Big Apple
2007-11-28 19:14:00 I love New York City. L-O-V-E it!! Recently, I visited to see Wicked and Jersey Boys. The day of my arrival was the 1st day of the production and stage hands’ strike. They remained on strike for my entire week’s visit. No shows. Always one to make the best of any situation, the shows’ cancellations forced me to discover parts of the city that I wouldn’t have otherwise. Some of my favorites include riding the subway down to the Brooklyn Bridge stop and walking across to Brooklyn, and then spending time on Old Fulton Street, where a B-movie was being filmed, and I sat down for an authentic pizza at Grimaldi’s. I also ate at some of my other favorite restaurants in the city: The Little Owl in Greenwich, Carnegie’s deli on W. 7th, and Felidia’s on E. 58th. Oh - and, Tiramisu on the Upper West Side! I had the spinach gnocchi. They were lighter and fluffier than cotton balls and melted in my mouth. Of course, I took in a comedy show and had wonderful late night drinks at... iMedExchange hosts Seattle Poker 2.0
2007-11-22 06:33:00 It was a late night for me last night as iMedExchange hosted the inaugural Seattle Poke r 2.0 tournament at our offices. The purpose of the event was to bring together folks from Seattle-based startup companies to meet, hear about what's happening, share ideas, commiserate and have a good time in the process. We had two dozen attendees, all of which were startup company founders, execs or investors and most of them in the technology and/or internet space. We started play at around 6:30 with 17 players and played until the first, second and third place winners were decided at around 11:15. I was fortunate enough to last until the final table but was then summarily dismissed within just a couple of hands. Fellow iMedExchanger Cliff Chirls (who you will be hearing more about soon) finished just out of the money in fourth place. The big winners were Cliff Monlux (1st) and Erik Jansen (2nd), both from the local Seattle private equity firm, Ramp Equity Partners. They both took a f... More About: Hosts
Happy Thanksgiving
2007-11-21 05:05:00 As I get ready to take a few days off to celebrate Thanksgiving , I want to briefly reflect on the many things here at iMedExchange that I have to be thankful for. First, I have an incredible team. I have worked with a lot of sharp folks over the years and the iMedExchange group is truly world-class. I appreciate their dedication to the company and the mission at hand. I appreciate the fun they create despite challenging deadlines and the periodic chaos of an early stage venture. Second, I am thankful for our incredible cadre of physician advisors and investors. Hundreds and hundreds of high quality physicians across the country have joined our little movement knowing that it can become a significant resource for the physician community. I am honored that you have taken your valuable time, and in many cases, your hard earned money and entrusted us to facilitate the building of iMedExchange. Finally, I am perhaps most grateful to my terrific family (Jennifer, Emma and Ubu) and th... More About: Happy , Hank
Welcome to iMedExchange Beta 2
2007-11-21 04:38:00 After months of intensive work, we have finally launched our new website along with the new and improved branding and functionality. The process of re-branding and re-designing the site was truly a collaborative effort...thanks to all of our physician advisors and staff for making it happen. It has been incredible watching physicians all over the country spend time on the site giving feedback to my team. You, our physician Advisors, have truly taken ownership of the site and are ensuring that when we introduce iMedExchange to your colleagues nationwide, your thumbprint will be all over the effort. We are ready to move forward with a more functional and secure platform. The plumbing is in place to take iMedExchange into unprecedented territory to the benefit of our physician members. We have lots of work to do...so we'll celebrate and rest over Thanksgiving...and get back at it hard next Monday! Many thanks to everyone and I look forward to several more months of aggressive Beta ...

New look coming
2007-11-13 02:30:00 For a few months we've been working on a new look for iMedExchange. This is a major overhaul including a new logo, new colors, and a redesigned website. Our physician advisors previewed the new look last week, and today I wanted to give everyone a look at the new logo. Who better to inspire our new look than the physicians in the community? And that's exactly what happened... This logo was directly influenced by one of our physician advisors: Dr. Ward. He suggested that we use the shorthand for 'exchange' and we worked with that idea. Thanks Dr. Ward - you'll always have an honorary seat in our design meetings! We hope to have the new look for iMedExchange up in this Friday's build (November 16th). More About: New Look
Another presidential candidate response
More articles from this author:2007-11-10 01:53:00 Yesterday we received responses from Governor Bill Richardson to 6 of the physician video questions. The Governor and his campaign office were so responsive and thorough in choosing and answering these questions. Regardless of your political views, I hope everyone checks out the iMedExchange video page to read his personal responses. Its very exciting for us to see our physicians' questions getting attention.
