Transparency through Clothing
2008-03-11 21:17:00
A camera that can "see" explosives, drugs and weapons hidden under clothing from 25 metres has been invented by The ThruVision. This system could be deployed at airports, railway stations or other public spaces. It is based on so-called "terahertz", or T-ray, technology, normally used by astronomers to study dying stars. Although it is able to see through clothes it does not reveal "body detail" or subject people to "harmful radiation", according to the designers. "It is totally and utterly passive - it receives only," - said a spokesperson for Thruvision. The portable camera, which has already been sold to the Dubai Mercantile Exchange and Canary Wharf in London, will be shown off at the Home Office scientific development branch's annual exhibition later this week. Unlike current security systems that use X-rays, the ThruVision system exploits terahertz rays, or T-rays. This electromagnetic radiation is a form of low level energy emitted by all people and objects. Thes...

BrightMinds To Destroy the Stereotypes
2008-03-09 22:28:00
Well, before destroying the stereotypes, let’s find some definition to it. If we ask “About.com” then Stereotype is “fixed impressions, exaggerated or preconceived ideas about particular social groups, usually based solely on physical appearance.” Stereotypes might be divided into positive and negative, stereotypes based on race or gender…The last one, gender, is the topic of our post. Alison Quill, who is the founder of BrightMinds and a former secondary school science teacher aims to reverse the stereotypical view, and tries to make evidences that not only boys are presented in lighter view at science but girls too. The very first thing she plans is to call the UK toy manufacturers.According to the SourceWire “I am fed-up with receiving chemistry sets or electronics kits to review with no girls’ photos on the box packaging – only the standard grey-haired, bespectacled, white-coated, male, mad professor” says Alison Quill. "I have even had construction products ...
Pentagon bans Google map-makers
2008-03-08 21:46:00
The US defence department has banned the giant internet search engine Google from filming inside and making detailed studies of US military bases. Close-up, ground-level imagery of US military sites posed a "potential threat" to security, it said. The move follows the discovery of images of the Fort Sam Houston army base in Texas on Google Maps. A Google spokesman said that where the US military had expressed concerns, images had been removed. Google has now been barred from filming and conducting detailed studies of bases, following the discovery of detailed, three-dimensional panoramas online - and in particular, views of the Texan base. "Images include 360-degree views of the covered area to include access control points, barriers, headquarters, facilities and community areas," said the defence department in a statement quoted by AFP news agency. It said such detailed mapping could pose a threat. Google spokesman Larry Yu said the decision by a Google team to enter ...

2008-03-07 07:24:00
Well, laziness is one of the seven deadly sins and it results not only spiritual but financial crisis. IDC claims that lazy buying habits are costing businesses millions in hidden consultancy and supports costs. That sounds quite logical but it is always better to support the statements by facts and in this case evidence to this statement is the research conducted by the IDC. On the bases of an Agresso-sponsored survey "Mid-Market Service Companies' Enterprise Investment Strategies and Adoption Trends", Albert Pang, director of enterprise applications research at IDC discovers that companies today are overspending on ERP software.According to IDC “Companies need to acknowledge the hidden costs of their ERP software following initial implementations,” said Pang. “Many users need to ask whether they should continue to stick to their current ERP system providers. If they don't, it seems to suggest that they are not willing to consider the options of using new, perhaps lesser kno...

Frog Secretions - Diabetes Treatment Hope
2008-03-04 21:56:00
A compound isolated from the frog, which grows to 27cm as a tadpole before shrinking to 4cm in adulthood, stimulates insulin release. A synthetic version of the compound - pseudin-2 - could be used to produce new drugs, delegates at the Diabetes UK annual conference heard. Around two million people in the UK have type 2 diabetes. The condition, which is often associated with being overweight, develops because the body does not produce enough insulin, or when the insulin that is produced does not work properly. It means people cannot regulate their blood glucose levels properly. Scientists from the University of Ulster and United Arab Emirates University have tested a synthetic version of pseudin-2, a compound which protects the paradoxical frog from infection. They found it stimulated the secretion of insulin in pancreatic cells in the laboratory. And importantly, there were no toxic effects on the cells. The synthetic version was better at stimulating insulin than the natural c...

Netscape Navigator - Pulled Off Life Support
2008-03-01 22:22:00
Netscape Navigator , now owned by AOL, will no longer be supported after 1 March 2008, the company has said. In the mid-1990s, as the commercial web began to take off, the browser was used by more than 90% of people online. Its market share has since slipped to just 0.6% as other browsers such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) and Firefox have eroded its user base. Netscape sold itself to AOL in a $10 billion deal completed in early 1999. The company recommends that users upgrade their browser to either Firefox or Flock, which are both built on the same underlying technologies as Navigator. "I think we represent the hope that was of Netscape. We have picked up many of the things that Netscape launched but we've taken them further in terms of openness and public participation." – says Mitchell Baker, chair of the Mozilla Foundation which coordinates development of Firefox. It is to admire that Ms Baker was one of the first employees at Netscape in 1994. Netscape wa...

Adobe Fuses on and Offline Worlds
2008-02-26 20:59:00
Adobe has launched software designed to make it easier for computer users to use online applications offline. Adobe Air allows developers to build tools that still have some functionality even when a computer is no longer connected to the net. A free download will allow users of Macs, PCs and, later this year, Linux machines to run any Air applications. The first programs that use the technology, developed by web sites such as eBay, have already been released. "Air is going to allow applications that run on the web today - that run in the browser - to be brought down to the desktop. It's about taking existing web applications and adding extra functionality whether you want to work offline or whether you want to access data on your disk " – says Andrew Shorten, platform evangelist at Adobe. Mr. Shorten said that the technology is not about replacing the web browser: "It's about delivering the best experience depending on where you are and what you need to get from the ap...

Save Money and Time. Headset Diagnostics
2008-02-25 22:59:00
Corporate Telecommunications presents the service that gives the users opportunity to diagnose their headsets: who is using which headset, which ones need repairing, which are out of warranty, which ones need new voice tubes or need upgrading. These are achieved by unique identity codes and specially-designed software that monitor the lifecycle of each headset. Access to information does not require separate software. It is automatically stored on a secure web-based database. All changes are updated directly onto the system.Chan Bansal, business development manager at Corporate Telecommunications said: "Trying to keep track of headsets using an Excel spreadsheet or databases might work in the short term, but manually inputting information on scores of headsets is a time consuming task. And if the administrator is on holiday, sick or leaves the company, it doesn't take long for the spreadsheet to become out of date. Not to mention the security risks of losing potentially sensitive i...

Apple Hits Lowest Level Since June; New iPhone Worries
2008-02-25 22:09:00
Apple (AAPL) shares are down sharply to their lowest level since June , as several analyst reports have triggered fresh concerns about the state of demand for iPhones and iPods. Toni Sacconaghi, an analyst at Bernstein Research, has published the transcript of a recent conference call he held with investors on the subject of unlocked iPhones, what they mean to Apple, and what options the company has to deal with them. In a summary of the call, he contends that, while the iPhone has the potential to drive material earnings growth for Apple, the company faces two “significant challenges”: demand appears to be falling short of expectations, and the incidence of unlocking is much higher than expected. Sacconaghi admits that the iPhone will be 6% of Apple’s revenues in FY ‘08, but could be nearly a quarter of the total by FY 2012, driving half of the company’s revenue growth over the next four years; and he notes that since the iPhone has a higher gross margin than other...

Banks to fail on ATM Security
2008-02-24 22:52:00
Security is one of the most important aspects that we demand from each service we use everyday in the highly developed technological world and especially in the World Wide Web. How much secure are we? How much dangerous the insecurity might be? It mostly depends on the sphere and the level of threats, whether privacy is under threat or our personal details as consumers of the banks are expected to be reachable by hackers. According to IP-ATM Security banks and financial institutions are failing to properly secure their ATMs. IP-ATM Security identifies three main threats to ATMs. These are:Internet protocol (IP) worms;Disruption of the IP network and denial of service; The harvesting of consumers’ transaction data for malicious purposesThe harvesting of consumers’ transaction data for malicious purposes gives opportunities to hackers collect consumers’ personal details, their card number, account balance and transaction history.According to the SourceWire press release there are...

2008-02-21 20:50:00
Gamers will soon be able to interact with the virtual world using their thoughts and emotions alone. A neuro-headset which interprets the interaction of neurons in the brain will go on sale later this year. "It picks up electrical activity from the brain and sends wireless signals to a computer. It allows the user to manipulate a game or virtual environment naturally and intuitively“ - said Tan Le, president of US/Australian firm Emotiv. The brain is made up of about 100 billion nerve cells, or neurons, which emit an electrical impulse when interacting. The headset implements a technology known as non-invasive electroencephalography (EEG) to read the neural activity. Whistle-blower Site Taken Offline
2008-02-19 21:03:00
A controversial website that allows whistle-blowers to anonymously post government and corporate documents has been taken offline in the US. Wikileaks.org, as it is known, was cut off from the internet following a California court ruling, the site says. The case was brought by a Swiss bank after "several hundred" documents were posted about its offshore activities. Other versions of the pages, hosted in countries such as Belgium and India, can still be accessed. However, the main site was taken offline after the court ordered that Dynadot, which controls the site's domain name, should remove all traces of wikileaks from its servers. The court also ordered that Dynadot should "prevent the domain name from resolving to the wikileaks.org website or any other website or server other than a blank park page, until further order of this Court." Other orders included that the domain name be locked "to prevent transfer of the domain name to a different domain registrar" to prevent chang...
