Brightcove Finds Warm Waters In Germany
2008-01-23 01:43:00 Brightcove, the on line publisher has signed a deal with Gruner+Jahr, a division of the media powerhouse Bertelsmann. The deal gives Brightcove its first major media customer in Germany . CEO, Jeremy Allaire told Reuters said the use of on line video would allow publishers to compete for TV adverts. "Germany has a very robust advertising market and broadband penetration is growing very rapidly so it is a good opportunity," While the on-line publisher has found traction with large media brands it has not fared as well with smaller professional content producers who saw the promise of aggregation as a vehicle to monetize their content. The Battleground in '08
2008-01-05 17:01:00 We were at our friend?s new house last week and I spend some time talking with him about his plans to install a multi-zone video and audio system, something like eight zones I recall. Their old TV set is pictured here, the new 60" plasma will hang over the fireplace thought he has not decided which brand. I was telling my friend about Netflix streaming to pc and suggested having his AV company install a rack mounted server to stream content to the TV and even other sets in the house. Too complex he told me, I want something I can operate with one remote. I have too many already.
Fighting for Hearts and Minds, Well At Least living Rooms
2008-01-04 12:34:00 The announcement yesterday that Netflix has partnered with LG to integrate its streaming service into their hardware is a significant step in the acceptance of Internet Television. I have been using their streaming service since it came out and dedicated an older pc to streaming content off my incoming shared T-1 connection to our living room plasma, which has been respectable quality for viewing content on the fly. That this is a process many consumers will not be interested or even capable of, the pending integration with LG is an important step in taking lean-forward content to a lean-back environment with ease of use that has been missing to date. Ripples, They Have a Way of Colliding To Cause Change
2007-12-18 12:32:00 Could the writers strike, now in its second month and with no end in sight become a catalyst for a shift from OTA/Cable to online/IPTV? There has been a drain in Ad revenues for premium programming and advertisers have been forced to compensate advertisers with cash (verses time). The trend has been one of declining viewership for OTA with a corresponding increase for Cable. In addition, revenue from OTA has been flat. Even if the strike were settled today, it would by some estimates take two or more months too ramp up production and inventory to offset the drain in revenues. In the meantime, the Internet is not waiting. Shows like ?Quarterlife ? and sites like ?MyDamnChannel,? ?Funny or Die? are marching on. Some WGA writers are reportedly in talks with venture capitalists about funding their own online programming, which would bypass the studios model. On the other hand, the traditional model is far from dead. Couple that with fragmentation from DVR?s, VOD and Place ... More About: Change , Sling
Will Work For On-Line Show!
2007-12-17 22:59:00 (Barbara Davidson / Los Angeles Times) As reported in today?s LA Times, Striking writers in talks to launch Web start-ups some striking writers plan to by-pass the studio system and produce content directly for the web. At least seven groups, composed of members of the striking Writers Guild of America, are planning to form Internet-based businesses that, if successful, could create an alternative economic model to the one at the heart of the walkout, now in its seventh week. This brings up all sorts of interesting questions: Will the WGA sanction writers setting up companies sidestepping not only the studios but also potentially the union? If the strike is settled, will writers be able to play in both sand boxes? Will writers be will to work with people, well like us outside the system? Under the Hollywood system, writers, in most cases, is employed by the studios to create and manage TV shows and movies. The studios own the copyrights and pay writers for the initial use of ... Return of the Y! Vision Platform?
2007-12-12 03:22:00 There has been rumors of late that Yahoo! will bring back the vision platform to add to their best in class financial portal renamed, TechTicker Yahoo! FinanceVision was the first ITV platform, which launched back in 2000. I know something about it as my department lent equipment and personnel within the company to assist them. Despite what has been written, the demise of Finance Vision was not due to its "supremely buggy technology" it was more a combination of factors; the companies internal direction, lack of broadband deployment outside of U.S. offices and almost no advertising for the program. For its day, it was a technological Mount Everest and set new standards for live programming five days a week, all within a customizable browser. See; Do You Remember Yahoo! Finance Vision Mike McGuire, a media analyst with Gartner Inc., said he thought it would be difficult for TechTicker to distinguish itself. ?If they can get an audience aggregated around the site, it can provid... 2007-12-11 12:01:00 NY Video 2.0 met last night in the glamour of the Roosevelt Hotel?s Grand Ballroom, this as a courtesy from another trade show that was using the space and gave it to our group. There were some technical problems which is too be expected however, the hoot of the night was an out of control SMS projected board of ?board participants" who started texting all sorts of crazy notes during the presentations, you had to feel bad for the presenters. The lineup last night included the following companies, which each had about five minutes to give their pitch. 1. Origin Digital - Curt Kendall, VP Product Dev 2. Site Growth Increasing Over Past 10 Months
2007-12-06 02:47:00 It has been ten months since we began measuring page view's and reader visits which have trended nicely with over 35,000 page views. Starting with Wowza Media Systems, we have begun to solicit best in class companies to advertise for our reader's and extend our service offerings. The addition of Google Ads was a harder call as much of what I see online is off message however, one of our programmers knows how to teak it so placements are more in-line with ITV and IPTV products and services. In addition, if you are interested in sponsorship programs, please email us. Thank you to all our loyal readers who have supported us and offered email and post feedback. We welcome your input for sections and topics for the coming year. Regards, Gilbert More About: Site , Growth , Past , Months , Mont
Writers employ Internet video in their Speechless campaign
2007-12-04 07:43:00 Writers and actors in sympathy have employed the very technologies they say is and will impact their future incomes, namely Internet video. The Speechless campaign is an episodic series featuring established actors and sends a very well crafted message in black and white terms. Making use of viral video on YouTube, their own site and over the Brightcove network, the WGA has one-uped the studios with this campaign and makes you wonder about the long term value proposition for studios in this on-line and IPTV age. Selling Content Online And IPTV: Can Independent Producers Succeed?
2007-11-22 01:18:00 Adrian Smith of IPTV Evangelist moderated a panel at Streaming Media West on the subject of how independent filmmakers and content producers could reach a wide audience and perhaps even monetize their efforts. Featured on the panel was award winning independent filmmaker and founder of The Webbys Tiffany Shlain, Director of Video Programming for AOL Miguel Monterverde, and Antonio Otalvaro COO of Barrio 305 (an ace at the corporate branding of independent content). The panel was well received and featured much lively (and at times passionate) conversation on the opportunities of promoting independent work online. You Will Get Your iTV -- Be Patient
2007-11-13 04:28:00 In his article, I want my iTV, Mr. Edwards?s cites companies who ?are unwilling to let go of their control in the way things work? so as not to jeopardize their power and revenues until the business of iTV is figured out has missed an important point and over-simplified the landscape. Unlike the television standards set by the National Television System Committee (NTSC) in the U.S. in the 1940?s, there is no specific roadmap or governing body for Internet television integration, let alone IPTV over closed providers or even mobile devices. What is the Future of Television?
2007-11-08 19:41:00 The Future of Television Conference got off to a not so auspicious start from a blogging perspective as there was neither mobile broadband reception nor Wi-Fi. Of course, in fairness to the organizers the conference venue, a museum was not ideally suited for this type of event and lower Manhattan is not only very windy this time of year, it is notoriously poor for wireless broadband reception. Ned Sherman, whose company Digital Media Wire has seen significant traction in the space set the stage for the two-day event to a full house of television and media specialists. Questions texted from the audience over their mobile handsets were displayed on a projection screen feed from a laptop and served as questions for the panel. More About: The Future
Writer's Strike
2007-11-06 12:52:00 There has been a lot of press in the rags and on-line about the writer's strike, but much of what I have seen has not been in industry sites or blogs, but rather mainstream press aimed at consumers. © AFP/Stan Honda Should writers be compensated for residual work sold by the studios for use on ipod's, sling, and cell phones and on-line? Should writers be paid only after the studio has recouped it is investment in a project? That on-line content is not likely going to be effected in the short term does not mean there are important implications for creative?s who put a value on their work across different platforms. On the other hand, the audience and viewing habits have changed. Media outlets are seeing a fragmentation of the audience and many have yet to make money from on-line ventures Aside from the obvious, there will be an impact felt across the industry as rental houses, catering and all the ancillary services are affected. A showdown could occur around the holiday... More About: Strike

2007 Millennials Conference Interviews
2007-10-08 00:33:00 Interviews from this year's Millennials Conference , by Levi Shapiro. Their site spells out a compelling point that should not be lost on creatives as well as advertisers, namely; "By the year 2010, Millennials, born between 1982 and 2000, will outnumber both Baby Boomers and Gen-Xers and will be the most significant consumer sector for the media & entertainment industries". From a creative perspective one of the questions is how involved are mainstream companies and agencies with engaging these Millennials in the creative process as we are well out of that demo. It is fair to say my ideas are quite different then those of my nephew and perhaps I should have an ideation session with him. Get A Digital Life
2007-09-28 13:26:00 I cruised by Digital Life yesterday, a friend was doing pr for a publishing company and we had time to catch up after the show. While he was working I wondered the main floor of The Javits Center to see if there was something I could learn or give me some inspiration. As the average age of the people in attendance was twenty years my junior, I certainly felt out of place. The show was a mish mash of gaming (both fixed and mobile), consumer electronics, audio and communications. It was interested to see the old style Ms. PacMan alongside a mobile version of the same. What was interesting was that hardly anyone was playing the mobile version, but rather opted for twenty year old technology, certainly an oxymoron given the nature of the show and my belief that twenty somethings were early adopters of mobile gaming? I did meet Frank Greer, CEO and President of Zipit Wireless, a company with the Z2 a $150.00 mobile communicator, I called it the Blackberry for the under twenty set,... More About: Digital Life
