Who Will Dominate Orkut? Picasa, Or Slide.com?

Several days ago Google announced that they were making it easier for users to post images from Pica sa Albums onto their friends scrapbook.(Official Orkut Blog) In order to make it simpler to add photos, you can now access all your Picasa Web Albums from the photo picker. Orkut: Indian Users Can Sport Diwali Background Theme

(Hat Tip: Rupesh Mandal of FunduBytes)It looks as if Google is allowing Indian users to spice up their Orkut homepage by adding a Diwali theme to the background.The feature is only available (and viewable) to Indian users to my knowledge, and Rupesh was kind enough to email me a snap shot on what it looks like on his profile.In order to activate this, users have to click on the Happy Diwali link near their user name.Despite my attempts at switching countries temporarily to India, the app refused to display for me.Either way, I am glad Google is doing this for places like India, and it would be really cool if they did something similar for users living in Brazil, Pakistan and the US (hint, hint).Content Copyright 2005-2007 of Inside Orkut. Review: Orkut's Mobius App (aka Ask Friends App)

So if you have not heard already, Google has released an app called Ask Friends (note: What's with the Mobius at the end?), in which you can ask your friends random questions to which you will hopefully receive some worthy advice.Google posted about this on their Official Orkut Blog, while Rahul provides instructions (with pictures) on how to add this feature over on Devil's Workshop.Perhaps the greatest strength and weakness about this app is its simplicity. For those of you who are new to the rumored concept, Social Stream was suppose to be a social network where everyone could access everything from one social network.Here was a video produced by the "social stream" team which goes into more detail about this rumored phenomenon. Will Indian Users Surpass Americans On Orkut?

While its a well known fact that Brazilian users dominated Orkut almost from the very beginning, it looks as if American users may find themselves in third place in a few months.Since Orkut no longer provides demographic numbers (a feature I do miss) I'll simply highlight percentages from the past.Here is a screen shot from August of 2006:...and here is one from the demographics page today:As you can see, Indian users are catching up, which probably explains why Google began allowing users to scrap in Hindi, enabling users to talk to each other without resorting to third party hacks.Although I expect India to surpass the US, I have a feeling that Google does not want to lose the American market to Facebook, which is making even MySpace nervous.Note: This may be the main reason why Google is releasing the Orkut API's next month, in order to gain some exposure among "us" Americans .Content Copyright 2005-2007 of Inside Orkut. Although there are plenty of hacks out there that make it easier to format text in ones scrapbook or forum (such as the Orkut Toolbar), this one by far seems to most useful.Created by Siva Jawaji, the Orkut Formatting Toolbar provides easy to use formating buttons above not only the "general" scrapbook box......but in the reply boxes as well.You can even use this hack while replying to various forums on Orkut.Currently users have to either remember 30 different formating codes ranging from smilies to colors to the basic [b]bold[/b], [u]underline[/u] and [i]italic[/i] codes (either that or constantly refer back to the Orkut chart).Siva's hack removes that hassle, making it easier for even non-geeks to concentrate more on what they say, than the appearance of the message on Orkut.Hopefully Google includes a similar feature later on this month, when they open up Orkut with API's.Note: This hack is for Firefox users (sorry IE fans). Google To Open Up Orkut With API's In November?

(Image Credit: Google )For those of you who are into the "geek world" (or at least read TechCrunch) this is probably old news, but it seems that Google may be finally releasing API's (or Application Program Interfaces) that would allow outsiders to import and export data to and from Orkut .(TechCrunch) The short version: Google will announce a new set of APIs on November 5 that will allow developers to leverage Google’s social graph data. They'll start with Orkut and iGoogle (Google's personalized home page), and expand from there to include Gmail, Google Talk and other Google services over time.On November 5 we'll likely see third party iGoogle gadgets that leverage Orkut's social graph information - the most basic implementation of what Google is planning. Did Google Increase The Album Limit On Orkut?

Users can now upload a whopping 25 images to Orkut instead of 12, as this screen shot of my album shows below.Ironically Google still lists the 12 page limit over on their help page.Although there is no word from the official Orkut blog regarding this change, it seems as if Google is throwing users a small treat for staying on their social network.Even though this is a welcome change, I think it would be better if Google simply removed the number restriction all together, and simply based it upon the amount of space users took up (perhaps even tying it to their "Google hard drive" service).Note: Come on Google! After years of logging on Orkut , only to be greeted with its baby blue appearance, it looks as if the boys and girls at Google are finally giving Orkut a face lift.(Official Orkut Blog) Today we're announcing our latest improvement to the site: an updated look! Just as you change your profile picture to keep with the times, we're updating the look of orkut. The change isn't live yet, but starting soon, we will start rolling-out the new look. It looks as if Google has added a feature that will allow users to see which forums they have in common with friends (as well as strangers).(Official Orkut Blog) Since orkut communities are all about the idea that everyone has something in common with everyone else, we've made it a little easier to see these shared interests. Orkut Allows Users To Crop Their Profile Images

It looks as if Google has enabled a feature that allows users to crop their Orkut profiles without using an external service such as Picasa.(Orkut Blog) We know that having a great picture is important because it's the first thing people see on your profile page. Needless to say, each of us cares a lot choosing just the right one. To give you a bit more control, now you can crop your picture after uploading to it orkut.It's super easy: just select the file, click upload and you'll see a cropping window on the next page. Drag the window with your mouse to select the part of the photo you'd like to be your picture. You can also change the size and the shape of the window by dragging the corners to include or exclude as much of the backdrop as you'd like. It looks like the boys and girls at Google have reason to celebrate as Orkut has won an award for being the best of the India n social networks!(PC World India) Orkut however, has been voted as the best of the lot. Has Google's Orkut Security Been Hacked?

Just when I was about to write a "How to get your forum back if its hacked," post, my inbox and scrapbook have been receiving attention over what seems to be the massive deletion of many forums on Orkut .This has led many people to suspect that Orkut security has been compromised by a hacker, who seems to have stolen Google Admin powers and is deleting forums (and profiles) at random.While there are users who have been able to steal forums away from members via hacking, I am having serious doubts as to whether or not Orkut as a whole has been compromised.Many of the forums that are disappearing seem to be what some consider to be "hate sites."
