Orkut Spam, And How To Block It (For Life!)
2007-10-29 20:21:00 Warning: This post is fairly long. You may need a cup of coffee (or even a few donuts) to get through this. ;-)(Image Credit: AppScout) Unless you are apart of the tiny minority who enjoys annoying the human race, you probably agree with me that spam is very evil.Whether it's in the form of phone calls, emails or Orkut scraps from strangers, spam is the worst time waster in my opinion, mainly because their is no joy in reading or hearing messages that you have very little interest in.So for those of you desiring to live a "spam free" life on Orkut, here are a few tips that you can use to make surfing Orkut a lot more fun.Defend Thy ScrapbookOne of the great things about Orkut scrapbooks is the ability to leave messages that all of your friends can read. Unfortunately spammers have often used scrapbooks as a form of free advertising to the world, which can be iritating to both you and your friends.Google has done an excellent job in fighting this using word verification, although un... Did Google Quietly Turn Off Orkut Media?
2007-10-18 21:29:00 For those of you who don't know, Orkut has had a "media site" called Orkut Media .It's purpose (at from what I could tell) was to help spice up Orkut to the outside world with views about politics, sex, God (more like "God bashing"), or random amusements by either Google rs or friends of Googlers.Anyways, its seems as if the last post to the site was around April 18th of this year, six months ago.Google may have discontinued publishing articles there due to its content, as some of it was not exactly suitable for little kids (despite the fact than anyone could access it).Although Orkut has an official blog, it mostly focuses on improvements to Orkut, while Orkut media commented about items in the general news.Either way, Orkut Media was fairly interesting (especially the Gallery) and it would be nice if Google decided to bring portions of the site back (especially comments from Jen).Content Copyright 2005-2007 of Inside Orkut. Will Indian Users Surpass Americans On Orkut?
2007-10-15 03:44:00 While its a well known fact that Brazilian users dominated Orkut almost from the very beginning, it looks as if American users may find themselves in third place in a few months.Since Orkut no longer provides demographic numbers (a feature I do miss) I'll simply highlight percentages from the past. Here is a screen shot from August of 2006:...and here is one from the demographics page today:As you can see, Indian users are catching up, which probably explains why Google began allowing users to scrap in Hindi, enabling users to talk to each other without resorting to third party hacks.Although I expect India to surpass the US, I have a feeling that Google does not want to lose the American market to Facebook, which is making even MySpace nervous.Note: This may be the main reason why Google is releasing the Orkut API's next month, in order to gain some exposure among "us" Americans .Content Copyright 2005-2007 of Inside Orkut. Hack: Orkut Formatting For Scrapbooks, Forums
2007-10-09 00:41:00 Although there are plenty of hacks out there that make it easier to format text in ones scrapbook or forum (such as the Orkut Toolbar), this one by far seems to most useful.Created by Siva Jawaji, the Orkut Formatting Toolbar provides easy to use formating buttons above not only the "general" scrapbook box......but in the reply boxes as well. You can even use this hack while replying to various forums on Orkut.Currently users have to either remember 30 different formating codes ranging from smilies to colors to the basic bold, underline and italic codes (either that or constantly refer back to the Orkut chart).Siva's hack removes that hassle, making it easier for even non-geeks to concentrate more on what they say, than the appearance of the message on Orkut.Hopefully Google includes a similar feature later on this month, when they open up Orkut with API's.Note: This hack is for Firefox users (sorry IE fans). New: Formating,Smiley Faces On Orkut Community Profiles
2007-10-03 05:01:00 (Hat Tip: Jerry from Orkut Plus)Community owners rejoice! Users who own forums on Orkut will not have the ability to format text and even add smiley faces to their forum profiles. You can see a great example of this in action over at the Orkut Plus community, who seems to be the only one thus far spicing up his forum's image. For those of you who actually own your own forums (as opposed to moderating which is totally different) you can spice up your community profile by visiting its home page and clicking on the edit profile link......then scrolling down to the description section......and formating the appearance of the text to whatever fits your mood.In order to make editing a little bit easier, users may want to consider installing Orkut Toolbar (review over here).Note: I wonder whether Google would consider allowing users to add video's from YouTube to our community profiles?Update (10/8): Thanks Jerry for catching that typo!Content Copyright 2005-2007 of Inside Orkut. Should Orkut Integrate This Google Talk Hack?
2007-10-01 17:59:00 (Hat Tip: Ramesh Chowdary from Tech Orchard) A long, long time ago Google decided to add Google Talk to Orkut in order to allow friends to easily chat with each in real time.Unfortunately Google Talk was very limited, causing some people to either whine about it (okay, so I was the only one complaining) while others decided to do actually create a hack for the rest of us.Now it seems that a new Google Talk hack has emerged, that not only improves upon the previous hack, but also is in the "perfect spot" on the Orkut page.(Gauravv.com) Recently i felt need of an IM client just inside orkut so that i can be in touch with who are online ,although i knew ultimately orkut will add this feature someday ..but why wait for them to take initiative :) so i made this greasemonkey script which does same thing,it also has support for multiuser conference :).The beauty of this hack is that users can "hide" the Gtalk (or Google Talk) feature by clicking on the Hide Gtalk link......if they feel lik... Google To Open Up Orkut With API's In November?
2007-09-24 18:00:00 (Image Credit: Google )For those of you who are into the "geek world" (or at least read TechCrunch) this is probably old news, but it seems that Google may be finally releasing API's (or Application Program Interfaces) that would allow outsiders to import and export data to and from Orkut .(TechCrunch) The short version: Google will announce a new set of APIs on November 5 that will allow developers to leverage Google’s social graph data. They'll start with Orkut and iGoogle (Google's personalized home page), and expand from there to include Gmail, Google Talk and other Google services over time.On November 5 we'll likely see third party iGoogle gadgets that leverage Orkut's social graph information - the most basic implementation of what Google is planning. From there we may see a lot more - such as the ability to pull Orkut data outside of Google and into third party applications via the APIs. And Google is also considering allowing third parties to join the party at the othe... More About: Open
Did Google Increase The Album Limit On Orkut?
2007-09-19 03:50:00 (Hat Tip: iWizard)It looks as if Google has quietly increased the image limit on Orkut albums. Users can now upload a whopping 25 images to Orkut instead of 12, as this screen shot of my album shows below.Ironically Google still lists the 12 page limit over on their help page.Although there is no word from the official Orkut blog regarding this change, it seems as if Google is throwing users a small treat for staying on their social network.Even though this is a welcome change, I think it would be better if Google simply removed the number restriction all together, and simply based it upon the amount of space users took up (perhaps even tying it to their "Google hard drive" service).Note: Come on Google! You allow users to upload videos without "numerical" restrictions. Why not images as well? :-)Content Copyright 2005-2007 of Inside Orkut. All Rights Reserved. Google (Finally) Adds Orkut Privacy Settings To Scrapbook
2007-09-13 17:24:00 (Hat Tip: MitAnshu Garg and Jerry from Orkut Plus)Google has finally added a feature that will not only cut down on spam, but will also help some ladies out who are often harassed by losers looking for a date.No official word from the Orkut Blog, but if you log into your home page you might see this message on your screen:If you don't see it simply visit your privacy settings page which can be found at this link: http://www.orkut.com/Privacy Settings.aspx Next, scroll down to the allow scraps to be written by section......and click on the drop down menu to select who can send you a scrap. You have to option of opening up your scrapbook to everyone, friends of friends, or just your close friends. After you have selected your preferences, hit the save changes button near the bottom and bask in the glory that spammers will have one less victim to harass with a useless product (not to mention girls will no longer find disgusting messages posted by desperate losers).Note: Now the only way t... Google Rolling Out A New Look For Orkut!
2007-08-23 21:46:00 After years of logging on Orkut , only to be greeted with its baby blue appearance, it looks as if the boys and girls at Google are finally giving Orkut a face lift.(Official Orkut Blog) Today we're announcing our latest improvement to the site: an updated look! Just as you change your profile picture to keep with the times, we're updating the look of orkut. The change isn't live yet, but starting soon, we will start rolling-out the new look. To start, we will roll it out to a small group of users randomly selected, and will continue to do so until everyone is on the new site. We'll tell you a little more each day, so come back to the blog to get a few sneak peeks. This is really great news, although I am very curious as to whether Google will allow users to alter their background in a variety of colors, or if it will just be simply a new universal look (probably the latter).Either way, this is a welcome change for Orkut, although I hope they just don't end it there with all of t... Google Adds "Related Forums" Feature In Orkut
2007-08-22 21:04:00 It looks as if Google has added a feature that will allow users to see which forums they have in common with friends (as well as strangers).(Official Orkut Blog) Since orkut communities are all about the idea that everyone has something in common with everyone else, we've made it a little easier to see these shared interests. We just launched a feature I built that will show you which communities you have in common with other orkut members. To check it out, go to anyone's orkut profile, click on the "view all" button below their communities, and then go to the new tab on this page, "mutual communities."This is a great feature that will definitely help me out whenever someone I don't know sends me a friend request. For those of you who enjoy visuals (like me), here is how you can see this new feature in action.Simply find a profile of a friend or a future friend (in this case I am going to use someone who has recently send me a friend request).Simply visit (or click) on their profi... Another "Orkut To RSS" Hack

Orkut To Add HTML, Video, Etc., To Scrapbook
2007-08-09 21:12:00 (Hat Tip: Mitanshu)It looks as if Google is finally going to make scrapping your friends a whole lot easier more fun! Orkut Allows Users To Crop Their Profile Images

Hack: Making Orkut User Friendly (Via Stylish)
2007-08-06 18:37:00 I think one of Orkut 's greatest strengths is the fact that its simple appearance makes it easy for anyone to use, as well as navigate around the site.Well, it seems a hack by JuanBR has improved upon Google's original design, creating a layout that gives the social network a more aesthetic taste (i.e. "it just looks better").To see what I mean, here is a screen shot comparing Orkut before implementing this stylish hack:And here is a screen shot after installing Stylish :This hack requires Firefox, and for those of you who love visuals (I think I am going to have to create video's some day) here are step-by-step instructions on how to install this hack.First, you are going to need to install Stylish for Firefox by visiting this link:https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir efox/addon/2108 .Next, click on the green "Install Now" button.A pop up window should appear asking you if you really want to install the script (with a warning beside it).Simply click on the Install Now button, which... PC World India: Orkut Voted Best Of The Best
2007-07-18 05:23:00 It looks like the boys and girls at Google have reason to celebrate as Orkut has won an award for being the best of the India n social networks!(PC World India) Orkut however, has been voted as the best of the lot. Though it is a global site, there are hordes of Indians using it, making it one of the most popular social networking sites. In terms of user experience it is the easiest to navigate, with its straight forward, uncomplicated and clean interface.Orkut was facing some stiff competition from sites like Yaari, Minglebox, Rediff, Sulekha not to mention Google's favorite foes competitors Yahoo and Microsoft.Despite the victory, the article criticized Orkut's weakness regarding business networking which (in my opinion) may have been an over site as there are various forums doing some serious networking on Orkut (at least employment wise).Either way, congrats to the Orkut team! And let us know when your comment section is open (as I'm sure your fans would love to drop by and sha...
Orkutsphere Chatter (What Do You See?)
2007-07-13 16:51:00 Note: Credit has to go to Danny Piccirillo for inspiring this idea on Inside Orkut. Be sure to check out his forum, Suicide, Self-harm, Depression which has been added to the Forums of Note section. One item that I really enjoy about Orkut is the fact that you can find many interesting conversations, debates, artwork, video's, etc. to entertain you while catching up with friends and strangers from around the world.Unfortunately, there is not enough time in the day to write up a post on all the fun things I find and (more often) items that friends email me. So instead of trying to highlight 50 random forum conversations (as that would take up way too much time), I decided to simply link to them above. For those of you visiting this site, you may have noticed the Orkutsphere Chatter box above the post section. Sify To Shiv Sena: No Orkut Block For You!
2007-06-22 02:21:00 Now I know that this news article was published earlier this month (which is like an eternity in "internet years") but I felt that with political pressure being brought on the Indian government to censor Orkut , government officials will take notice and follow the example of Sify , an internet service provider (or ISP).(Mumbai Mirror Online) Internet Service Provider (ISP) Sify has refused to bow to the Shiv Sena's demand to block Orkut.com, saying the social networking website is the 'most popular' among the youth. Sify is the biggest ISP in Mumbai. It has 400 (I-way) franchisees in the city. In addition to that, over 1,000 cyber cafes use its services to provide Internet access to their customers. ..."Block ing a site is not at all possible and reasonable [from the moral point of view]. If someone is upset with the contents, they can take up their grievances directly with the [people who operate the] site," Pasha said. He also made it clear that cyber café owners do not have th...

Has Google's Orkut Security Been Hacked?
2007-06-12 20:00:00 Just when I was about to write a "How to get your forum back if its hacked," post, my inbox and scrapbook have been receiving attention over what seems to be the massive deletion of many forums on Orkut .This has led many people to suspect that Orkut security has been compromised by a hacker, who seems to have stolen Google Admin powers and is deleting forums (and profiles) at random. While there are users who have been able to steal forums away from members via hacking, I am having serious doubts as to whether or not Orkut as a whole has been compromised. Many of the forums that are disappearing seem to be what some consider to be "hate sites." Although in America hate sites are pretty much ignored (and laughed at) by society, some nations seem to have laws against them existing, and go at great lengths to silence them.Although it is possible that a hacker could have accessed Google's admin controls via internet cookies, a more reasonable explanation seems to be that Google may have ... Google Protecting Orkut Profiles?
