Over 100 Orkut Apps (Which Ones Do You Enjoy?)
2008-05-22 17:29:00
Despite the fact that Orkut Apps are still only open towards users residing in India and Estonia, (unless of course you change your residency to one of those countries) it looks like Google is allowing more applications to be displayed in the directory, which currently lists (as of this post) over 100.While the Official Orkut Blog has highlighted several apps for users to check out, here are some new ones that users may be interested in.SuperscrapSuperscrap does what the title implies--it enables users to send colorful scraps (note: only within the app) to your friends. The app is powered by Potalz.com, and while it is quite useful for sending out mass messages, its only drawback is that there is no button allowing you to select all of your friends at once (or even select groups). That aside, this app can be quite useful for those not fluent in geek, and is probably safer than using Orkut's mail system.Note: Users can insert this app over here.Amazon StoreWhile this app is not offici...

Google Testing Orkut Status Updates On Select Profiles
2008-05-02 02:06:00
It looks as if Google is selectively testing out a new feature that allows users to post their status updates for their friends to see.(Image Credit: Pramod of Tech Alert)This feature looks very similar to what Facebook has, with the only exception being that you can add emoticons (i.e. smiley faces, etc.) to the status bar.(Image Credit: Pramod)Pramod's profile seems to be the only one that I have seen this on, so if any other users are seeing this pop up on their accounts, feel free to comment below with a link towards your blog and/or image.Note: I wonder if the Orkut team could find a way to connect this feature with Twitter, as I would hate to have to update three different sites at once.Update (5/3): Just received this yesterday! I wonder if Google has rolled this out to the rest of the Orkut kingdom? Also, as far as somehow connecting this with Twitter, I am going to see if HelloTxt would consider adding Orkut status to their "mini updates" page, as it would make it easier t...

Scrapboy To Help Orkut Users Access Facebook?
2008-05-01 21:35:00
A new version of Scrapboy has been released, which may appeal to many Orkut users who may have fallen in love with program since its last update. While the previous version of Scrapboy allowed users to access both Orkut and MySpace, it looks as if Assaf (the creator of Scrapboy) has now included Facebook to the mix. This should make it easier for those who are frequent members of both networks to keep up with friends (especially if you live in different time zones around the world). The interface is pretty much similar to what one would see on Orkut, except that it has a "facebook twist" to it.Embracing some of the more popular social networks is probably a smart move by Scrapboy, as it seems all of the social networks (or at least Orkut, MySpace and to a lesser extent, Facebook) are discouraging users to use third party software to log into their sites (for security reasons, of course).Note: As far as Orkut goes, I think it would be really cool if Scrapboy added a feature where users ...

Belated (Yet New): Co-Ownership In Orkut Forums?
2008-05-01 18:40:00
(Hat Tip: Orkut Plus)Google has enabled Orkut forum owners to add additional owners to the forums, giving users more control over their communities.Aside from having all of the powers of a moderator, co-owners can un-delete a forum in case the previous owner no longer desires it, as well as assume ownership of the forum if a community has been hacked.Forum owners can add co-owners to their forums by clicking on the "add co-owner" link which they can find on their community profile (above the "add moderator" link)......then typing in the name of a member of the forum that they want to add......then hit the "search members" button after selecting the person. After that, Orkut should bring you to a new page in which you can then grant that individual co-owner status by hitting the "grant co-owner privileges" button below. You can add up to two co-owners to each forum, which a lot lower than the 10 moderator limit set by Google. However, I would recommend users only adding co-owners to t...

Orkut Apps For India, Estonia...Who's Next?
2008-04-18 04:16:00
After previously launching Orkut Apps for Estonia , it looks as if Google is slowly opening the gates by allowing India n users to test out its features.(Orkut Developer Blog) Last month's prelaunch testing of the orkut developer platform brought a small set of third-party applications to less than 1% of orkut users. After implementing various improvements, tweaks, and fixes, we are moving into the first stage of the official rollout process by announcing the platform's availability in India, which represents about 10% of the orkut user base.More analysis can be seen over at Devil's Workshop as well as the Official Orkut blog, who has provided this helpful video on how to add an app to your Orkut profile. While its good to see more users being able to access Orkut (without having to visit the sandbox aka Orkut beta), Google seems to be ignoring Brazilians, over half of all Orkut users on the site (note: they may have done this for financial reasons, as having millions of Brazilians...
Google (Quietly) Launches Orkut For Mobile Phones
2008-04-13 01:50:00
(Humorous Hat Tip: Rahul of Devils Workshop, see Note below)After many months of waiting, seeking and pondering over whether or not Google would develop a mobile version for Orkut , it looks as if my wish has come true.In order to access the mobile version of Orkut, users simply have to point their phone's browser over to m.Orkut.com and login using your Google account. The mobile version includes most of Orkut's key features, allowing users to access their scrapbooks, check out their profiles, accept/deny friend requests and search Orkut via the Universal Search (adapted for mobile viewing of course). You can even flag profiles, a feature many spammers will probably loathe.Unfortunately you can not view communities which is a bummer, as every attempt brings up the infamous "bad, bad, server" error pictured below.Hopefully Google changes their mind in the future, as adding forums to the list would make Orkut much more fun place to surf (especially on the iPhone).Launching a mobile v...

Google To Orkut Forums: HTML Formatting Now Included
2008-04-11 05:44:00
(Hat Tip: Orkut Plus)A feature request long over due, it looks as if the Orkuteers have given their blessing on allowing users to finally display video's, images*** and hyper linked text within community forums. In order for community owners to activate this feature, they have to first click on the "edit profile" link......then select the option to have your forums moderated instead of allowing anyone from Orkut to join your community.Note: Users may also notice that by allowing their forums to be moderated, Google allows members to send "mass emails" to everyone in the forum, an option I WOULD NOT recommend admins selecting. After that, scroll down to where it says Community Feature Settings (in bold) and check mark the box that says "allow HTML posts in forums."After that, click the update button at the bottom of the screen, and your users should be able to display video's and post hypertext words without using Orkut's funky formatting tips.***Note: For some strange reason, image...

New: Google Suggest Invades Orkut
2008-04-09 22:39:00
(Hat Tip: Rohit Srivastwa on the Google Blogoscoped forum)It looks as if Google Suggest, a feature that helps users narrow down what they are searching for online has been included within the Orkut search bar at the top, which you can see from this screen shot below.Note:Rahul's email (along with mine) were removed for obvious reasons, as neither of us enjoy reading spam).Unfortunately Google does not include the Google Suggest feature within the general universal search bar, which is a bit odd.Exit Question: With Google suggest being added, are Google ads on Orkut not that far behind?Content Copyright 2005-2008 of Inside Orkut. Must Have: Threaded Orkut Scraps
2008-04-08 22:12:00
One of the reasons I love Gmail so much (note: yes, this is related to Orkut , so bear with me) is that Google groups together all of those messages sent back and forth between your friends (or businesses) into conversations, which saves you a lot of time when you are trying to figure out what you last said (or rather wrote) in Gmail. While I do enjoy the overall layout of Orkut scrapbook, one thing I wish the Google team would consider is giving users the ability to group together related scraps, as it would make it much easier to communicate between friends (especially if you are receiving a ton of scraps).Even though Google is probably busy with other projects (such as reinserting ads inside Orkut, not to mention receiving feedback regarding their Orkut Apps (which you can view if you are a citizen of Estonia), it would be great if they added this feature alongside of the million other things they are planning for the site.Content Copyright 2005-2008 of Inside Orkut. Google Launches Orkut Apps...For Estonia?
2008-04-04 20:18:00
(Hat Tip: Devils Workshop) While I am underwhelmed over the fact that Google selected Estonia to test out their Orkut Apps (instead of Brazil, India, or even the US), users will now at least have the option of checking out the latest Orkut Apps without the need to register for the Orkut Sandbox (Google's beta site for Orkut). In order to test these apps for themselves, users first have to visit their Orkut home page (which is orkut.com/Home.aspx) and click on the edit link located underneath your profile image section.Note: You can also click orkut.com/EditSummary.aspx which will bring you there as well.Next, locate the menu bar that asks you for your home country and change it to Estonia. Then click the update button at the bottom of the page. Once you are finished, simply scroll over to the Orkut App Directory (which you can find over at orkut.com/AppDirectory.aspx and add any feature that you desire (my favorite thus far is iLike).Currently Google is only displaying a grand total ...
Deja Vu: Google Testing Ads On Orkut (Again)
2008-03-31 04:08:00
(Image Credit: Rahul Bansal of Devils Workshop) Rahul of Devils Workshop has recently spotted Google ads on an Orkut profile of another user.If this sounds like deja vu, that's because Google previously rolled out AdSense on Orkut, before removing them from their social network. From the images (provided by Rahul), Orkut seems to be placing the ads in a much better position than Facebook (who places them at the very bottom of the page), without the "overkill" that one often sees upon MySpace. While I realize not everyone enjoys viewing these ads on Orkut, I do think that having them is a good idea as it helps cover the cost of hosting our content (which translates into Google launching even better services for Orkut).Placing ads on profiles however may be "slightly controversial," and it may be wise for Google to instead place ads next to orkut's universal search, a feature they launched last year.Google should also consider sharing the revenue with forum owners (although they shoul...

Review: Orkut Feeds (What Google Should Have Included)
2008-03-25 18:35:00
While there are several other RSS to Orkut hacks out there, this by far is probably the best ones that I have seen online.Rahul, who previously came up with a GreaseMonkey version, created a site called Orkut Feeds which allows users to subscribe to not only scrapbooks and forums, but topics within individual threads of forums as well. The last feature is very helpful as it will help Orkuteers keep up on those lovable debates about politics, religion or just which Sushi tastes the best). In order to subscribe to a favorite forum, all a user has to do is visit one of their favorite forums on Orkut and then highlight the URL at the top of the screen and copy it (note: you can do this by pressing the Ctrl button and the letter A on your keyboard, then press the Ctrl button and the letter C).Next, visit OrkutFeeds.com, and paste the URL into the field below (note: you can do this by pressing the Ctrl button and the letter V on your keyboard). Then hit the subscribe button......and subscrib...

Thanks to everyone who contacted me while this blog took a little "vacation" (with special thanks to Rahul over at Devils Workshop). Before I dispense with the mobile news, I just want to let everyone know that the Orkut Blogs section (on the right) has been updated, which thanks to a new beta feature by Google will highlight the latest post from an Orkut Related blog. These are blogs that I usually read daily (and would recommend subscribing to) so make sure you add these to your daily Orkut diet if you have not already.Devils Workshop (Orkut Posts)Orkut Plus (who recently updated to OrkutPlus.org, so update your links!Ortuk (no, its not a type, that is how its spelled)Beyond Satire (an Orkut Googler)Os Humanos Do Orkut (in Portugese--note the new skin)Orkut Champ (a newcomer on the scene)There are other sites as well, so be sure to check them out! Now, as far as the iPhone announcement goes, I am proud to inform everyone that Inside Orkut is now iPhone friendly!Whether your iPhone is...

Did Google Renouce Orkut's Little Brother Joga?
2008-03-25 16:35:00
A long, long time ago in a place not so far away, Google (along with Nike) created a site called Joga.Joga, unlike Orkut was a forum dedicated solely to the sport of football (or soccer as it is called in the US). Google even promoted it on Orkut, although many users found the Joga ad to be annoying and thus found ways to block it from view. While the site had both the cash and resources to make it attractive to the outside world, it was unable to gather a large crowd and it looks as if the site has quietly shut down.Upon visiting Joga.com a user will encounter this image......with the phrase "coming soon" as if the site will relaunch again in the foreseeable future.Even though Joga never gained the fame of its older brother Orkut, it did provide a unique testing ground for Google as most of the features previously inside of Joga (video's, large albums, etc.) were implemented within Orkut later on after the site was relaunched with a brand new look.Whether or not Google brings Joga ...

New Orkut Developer Blog?
2008-02-21 23:45:00
(Hat Tip: Official Orkut Blog )It looks as if Google has launched a blog site to keep the developer community (aka geeks) updated on the latest changes to the Orkut sandbox. This is good news for users interested in either writing code (or playing around with Orkut apps), as it will help keep us all informed when problems are resolved by the Orkut staff (example: IE and Orkut are friends again).Users can visit the blog site over at OrkutDeveloper .blogspot.com and be sure to subscribe to their feed (as FeedBurner is reporting zero readers as of this post).Content Copyright 2005-2008 of Inside Orkut. Google Unveiling Orkut Apps To The Public
2008-02-12 23:30:00
After several months of testing, Google is planning on releasing the first batch of (hopefully) many Orkut apps to the public.(Official Google Blog) Starting this month, we're enabling developers to make their social applications available to orkut users. We'll start ramping up to more than 50 million people over the next few weeks. To prepare for this growth, we're now accepting social applications. For a while now, developers have been able to write, test, and play with applications on orkut. Later this month, however, we're going to start rolling them out to orkut users. OpenSocial developers can submit their completed applications (deadline: Feb. 15).While Google is silent on the total number of apps being tested in the Orkut Sandbox, those with access can test (and check out) a variety of applications over at the OpenSocial Directory. It will be interesting to see which applications make the cut, although I am hoping that the Orkut Facebook App is approved, not to mention the...

Orkut Privacy Forums: Good For Users, Bad For Cops
2008-02-09 01:16:00
It looks as if the boys and girls at Google have finally allowed users to create communities that are hidden from public view.Previously users could only restrict access to who could join a forum, although the entire orkutsphere could read what was posted inside. Now it looks as if users will be able to setup their own secret forums, which may be both a blessing and a curse.(Official Orkut Blog) Based on your feedback, we've decided to go even further to empower the owners of communities to choose whether to make their community content private or public. The additional privacy control we've added allows you to make your community an enclosed entity so that you can discuss whatever you want within its walls (of course, content must abide by orkut community standards and policies), resting assured that only members can view your discussions, forums, and events. In order to turn on this feature, forum administrators need to click on the edit profile link......then look for the conten...

Adsense For Orkut Forum Owners? Good Idea, Bad Idea?
2008-02-01 01:30:00
So with the first month of 2008 just about over, and Google eagerly taking suggestions for Orkut , I was wondering whether or not it might be a good idea for Google to give community owners the option to insert Google Adsense (or any ads of their choice) on forums that they manage. While this idea probably has been discussed before (back in the day when Orkut had ads before they removed them after users found them to be annoying) it might make sense as an option for Google, especially since the social networking wars are starting to heat up.Since Google already shares ad revenue with YouTube users (not to mention users of Blogger, Google Pages, and the future Google Knol), why not do the same thing for forum owners?I think the only reason Google may hesitate in doing this would be because of spammers (who have a habit of ruining everything), although they could set the bar very high by allowing forums with 10,000 plus members and heavy traffic to opt in (sort of like what YouTube did)...

Happy Birthday Orkut! (Four Years Strong)
2008-01-25 04:44:00
It looks as if Orkut has turned four years old this day, and has come a long way since launching its very first forum.(Official Orkut Blog) You may have noticed that the orkut logo looked a little different when you signed in today -- and if the four candles on the cake didn't give it away already, it's our fourth birthday. That's right, 2/5ths of a decade ago, orkut launched. It has grown up pretty fast, with many more features, communities, friends and photos since it first opened as an invite-only community. Whether you've been with us for years or days, thank you for being a part of the orkut community!Excluding blogging and usenet forums (such as Google Groups), Orkut was the very first social network that signed onto, way back in the day when social networks were generally seen as merely the "geek thing" to do (blogging was just catching on back then). While I have also signed up with dozens of others, ranging from MySpace to Facebook, Orkut still remains one of the most us...

Orkut Declares War On Scrapbook, Forum Spam
2008-01-02 21:02:00
After enabling users to block unwanted messages in their Orkut scrapbooks, it looks as if Google is taking more aggressive measures to remove spam from community forums, as well as scrapbooks.(Official Orkut Blog) While communities provide a great medium for people to come together and share ideas through forums, polls and events, lots of communities can be the target of spam. Until now, if you were not the community owner or moderator, you couldn't remove the spam if you saw it. Well that has changed. Now you will be able to click "report spam" to specific topics or items in communities that are spammy, even if you are not the community moderator or owner. This will help us take down spam faster and take the pressure off the community owners and moderators. You can also report spam on specific scraps that you see in your own scrapbook.Google is probably doing this in response to the rise in scrapbook spam, which has been increasing due to the various "scrap all your friends" hacks...

Software For Orkut: Scrapboy (Version 2.0)
2007-12-18 02:38:00
It has been a long time since I last reviewed Scrapboy, which in my opinion was one of the best software programs to use for Orkut (at least as far as scraping goes).Ever since its launch Scrapboy has had some competition, mainly from Agent Orkut (which seems to have gone missing in action as of late).Anyways, Scrapboy has relaunched a whole new version of the scrap chat program, which is not only a lot easier to install (compared to version 1.0), but a lot more user friendly as well. While Scrapboy does include the basic text editing functions (like inserting color, style, etc.) it does have a few noticeable features that may convince users to send scraps through the program rather than logging into Orkut.Search Thy FriendOne cool feature that I enjoyed is the friend search bar at the top. If one has over several hundred friends on Orkut, it can be a pain to find them on the friend list, and then scrap them on Orkut.Scrapboy eliminates this by putting a friend search bar, which mean...

Google Launches News Feeds For Orkut
2007-12-07 20:56:00
Funny, I can't believe I missed this post yesterday! Anyways, Google is rolling out news feeds for Orkut forums which allows admins to display relevent headlines next to their favorite communities.(Official Orkut Blog) Well, now you can stay up to date on news from within your community, because community owners can now display a news feed on that subject within the community. So while you talk to your fellow members, you can see what's in the news on the same subject, without leaving orkut. In order to enable this feature click on the "sign up" link above your community profile......which will take you to your "Edit Community" page. Next scroll down to the very bottom of the page and look for the phrase "customized news" (which is the very last option on the page, right below "polls" and "events").Since Customized News is disabled by default, you will have to enable it by clicking the circle. After doing this, a text field should appear, in which you can type in any word that you ...
Google Drops Orkut From Home Page (Where's The Love?)
2007-12-06 17:39:00
It looks as if Google has either forgotten to add Orkut to the link list on the drop down menu of its international homepage (assuming they updated their search engine), or has decided to treat Orkut as the red headed step child of the Google family. After logging into Google, I use to be able to enjoy opening up the Orkut without typing in the domain. Now alas I have discovered that they have removed Orkut entirely, along with a few of its other siblings as well.Fortunately the Gmail team still has a link to Orkut, so I guess I'll have to make that my default page from now on.Now I know this may come off as simple whining, but Google should reconsider adding Orkut back to the homepage. After all, they still give their "I feel lucky" button some space on the page, despite the fact that it may be costing them millions.Hopefully a Googler (or perhaps even a Noogler) can contact the search team to reinsert the link back, as it would be sad for my non-geek American friends (who are curi...

Open Facebook On Orkut...And Vice Versa?
2007-12-04 05:15:00
(Hat Tip: Orkut Open Social)Although this is probably old news to hackers, it looks as if Vivek has created an Orkut app that allows users to visit (and access) their Facebook accounts while still logged into Orkut. While users are unable to have access to all of Facebook's features, it does allow you to send messages via Facebook mail, as well as post on users walls (which is similar to Orkut scrapbooks).Users can install this app by copying and pasting this url below into the field on the Orkut application page.http://vivekjishtu.com/opensocial/fa cebook.xmlNote: This feature is only available to developers or users who have access to the Orkut Sandbox. Those interested in participating can sign up over here. Some may remember a similar app that allowed Facebook users to access Orkut, although the only difference between the Facebook app and the Orkut one is the fact that you have to login to Facebook to view it on Orkut, an item Vivek can hopefully change.Exit Question: With most o...

Google Unleashes Orkut Scrap Alerts, Kills Off Competition
2007-11-30 19:43:00
Alas, it looks as if Google 's latest feature may be the death knell that kills off some of my favorite Orkut hacks such as Orkut Alert.Called Scrap s Alert, this handy feature will inform users whenever a friend (or stranger) posts a message inside your scrapbook.(Official Orkut Blog) With scrap alerts you can be on any orkut page and find out that you have received a scrap - that very minute. You could be browsing your friend's photos, and find out "hey! I just got a new scrap." Then you can click on the "Scrapbook" link to reply on the spot. This way you'll be free to explore all of orkut, comforted in the knowledge that when you have received a new scrap, you'll know about it that moment. Google is quickly rolling this feature out to all of its users over the next few days, so if you do not see it now, chances are you will discover it by the beginning of next week.My only complaint about the feature is that its colors clash with Orkut's blue background, making it an eyesore.H...

Can Hyperlinks And Snap.com Make Orkut Cleaner And Safer?
2007-11-20 05:46:00
A long, long time ago in a place much, much bluer than it is today, Google allowed users to hyperlink text within any orkut forum.Unfortunately, due to the massive spam wars, Google disabled hyperlinked text, only to make it up to everyone by automatically linking to any web address pasted in fully. While seeing the entire web address can help users determine whether or not the link is safe, it has also made posting information to articles outside of orkut look extremely tacky, making orkut less beautiful. One way Google could bring back beauty as well as maintain security to the orkut universe is by integrating Snap .com (or Snap Shots) within their forums and scrapbooks.Note: For those of you who don't know, Snap Shots allow users to preview a site before visiting it by providing a screen shot (in a "bubble") that activates once a users scrolls over a link.I have added it to this site, after first hearing about it over on TechCrunch a long ways back. This would give users a heads up ...

(Hat Tip: Jerry from Orkut Plus)Google has recently given users the ability to hide their Orkut albums, videos and even testimonies from public view. This is great news, especially for girls as it will help prevent morons from stealing their images and cloning them on Orkut. In order to activate this users will have to visit the "Privacy Tab" which can be accessed by visiting this link:http://www.orkut.com/PrivacySettings .aspxNext, scroll down towards the bottom of the page until you see the "allow content to be viewed by" text. You will notice two columns, one with drop menu's and the other simply listing the features you can hide from public view.Simply select whether you want your albums, video's and testimonies to be viewed by friends or to the world. This move should help keep down "image theft" on Orkut, and teamed up with the scrapbook privacy settings should make Orkut a much safer place online.Note: I would HIGHLY recommend ladies on Orkut to make your albums, video's and t...
