10 Twitter Users You Should Follow
2008-05-20 22:58:00 Twitter is awesome. It’s a great tool for quick communication and an even more awesome tool for social networking. If you’ve been following me on Twitter, you know I’m quite active and love to tweet (update my status) with funny and random things, but still talk about news on WordPress. Anyways, Twitter is only fun when you’re following certain people. If you follow boring people who tweet about boring stuff, your timeline gets backed up with boring crap. That’s boring, obviously. Here’s a list of the Twitter users, that I follow, that tweet most about WordPress news. 1. photomatt (ma.tt) 2. jeffr0 (jeffro2pt0.com) 3. chris24 (chris24.ca) 4. nathanrice (nathanrice.net) 5. travishines 6. ozh (planetozh.com) 7. danphilibin (danphilibin.com) 8. michaelcastilla (wpcandy.com) 9. ilovetypography (ilovetypography.com) 10. wordpress (wordpress.org) If you follow someone else who talks a lot about WordPress, please share in the comments! Tagaroo - Intelligent Tag Suggestions
2008-05-20 22:08:00 Tagaroo » Make blogging better! I’ve yet to test this plugin, as A) I don’t really want to sign-up for an API key, B) I’m always leery of blackbox services filtering my content, and B), I don’t really run a blog on WP that would benefit. That said, it seems like an interesting plugin, especially for people not familiar with tagging, or looking to beef up their tagging. Also, the feature to get images from flickr based on a tag sounds cool, though I’m curious how it might filter by license, as well work with the flickr TOS. If anyone has tested this feature, I’d love some feedback. Read it at the source ShareThis More About: Intelligent
WordPress’ Widgetised Dashboard
2008-05-20 18:30:00 Widgetized Dashboard : this very efficient plugin allows you to populate your Dashboard with the widgets you want, all the widgets you want, and just the widgets you want, just like sidebar widgets. Remove the “Plugins” widget? Add any RSS feed you like? You name it. In my early WordPress 2.5 review a few weeks before it was released, I was mentioning that a widgetised Dashboard should open the door for some cool and crazy Dashboard plugins (a small “quick post” mini form? To-do lists?). Widgetized Dashboard is actually just what was missing for this. Very cool plugin, and gives some justice to our potentially-but-not-yet cool Dashboard. Should be core. (while I’m at it, I’d like an option to remove the whole “Right Now” section) Share This © Ozh for planetOzh, 2008. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us Who’s linking ? Beat Writers Block Once And For All
2008-05-20 17:11:00 Oh my, it finally happened! While I swore that I would never succumb to this lowly feeling of despair and commiseration, the day arrived when it did, regardless of my resolve. It hit me. Writers block. Gasp. Shock. Horror. Where to now. What to do. At the time I didn’t know. Nor did I really care because the longer I tried to come up with a suitable post idea, the worse my brain acted. It was like I was walking inside my brain trying to peek around corners. And every time I managed to turn a corner, my mind was already ahead on the next. So I walked away. Then suddenly it hit me like a twelve ton truck. An idea. A flicker of hope. Quick, write it down before the fleeting though disappears forever into the darkness of the mind… In hindsight I have to say it isn’t as bad as it looks. Writers block is a common phenomena with bloggers far and wide. We all catch that annoying “lack of inspiration” at some stage in our blogging life. Luckily there are many w... Simple WordPress Themes - The Journalist
2008-05-20 12:56:00 If you are anything like me, then you appreciate the simple-ness of clean cut WordPress themes. I find them just so much easier on the eye as there is nothing that will distract from the content. In the last year or so I’ve seen an increasing amount of blogs surface who prefer to use simple themes like The Journalist . The Journalist WordPress theme is similar to the stylish Whitepaper. It is simple and clean. While some bloggers do prefer to use paid WordPress themes (myself included) for branding purposes, many of these free themes are great and even though I use a paid theme on my major blogs, I also use free themes on my other blogs. The more I think about it, those clean, predominantly white spaced themes lend themselves really well to blogging about simple things. Zen style blogs are all the rage as of late and everywhere they surface they seem to attract a huge amount of followers. After all, blogging about the simplistic aspect of life does help us to slow down and smel... More About: Wordpress , Wordpress Themes , Themes , Simple
How To: Adding a Print This Button to Your Theme
2008-05-20 11:00:00 If you ever visit our actual website, you’ve probably noticed the “Print This” button that we display below each post. Depending on the type of website or blog you are running, having a button like this may be a good fit for your blog. I’ve found it to be good to have this button available to readers for any type of website that offers tutorials, recipes, guides, or pretty much anything that might require a visitor to print something you’ve written. If you think you’d like to offer your readers the option to print something on your blog, here is the code I use on my blogs (uses Javascript): <a href="javascript:window.print()" rel="nofollow">Print This!</a></span> It prints the page you are on, so it is probably best to use it mostly on post and pages. If you place it on the blog’s homepage, it will print the entire homepage, not just that post. — Enjoy writing about WordPress? Get yourself more exposu... More About: Button , Theme

A Visible Drop Of Traffic
2008-05-12 08:25:00 When I started blogging on my freelance writing blog back in June 2007, I blogged often, between 20-30 entries per months. Over the course of the following months and as my freelance writing business grew, those posts got less and less. Partially due to time constraints and also due to testing whether the myth is definitely true about the fact that posting less will reduce readership and commenting frequency. The results are in I can now honestly say that posting less has negatively affected my visitor numbers. While I received a steady grow to my blog’s traffic in the period from July 07 to January 08, the number has dropped since then to about half of what I had before. Interestingly enough, my RSS subscriber number has been growing ever since and so has my comment section. I put this down to getting more recognition due to branding in the blogosphere and making new friends who stick by me regardless of how often I post. Knowing this now is proving to me that posting less do... More About: Traffic , Drop , Visible
15 Websites and,or Services I’d Actually Pay For
2008-05-12 03:01:00 15 Websites / Services I’d Actually Pay For Ryan lists fifteen websites/online services he would be willing to pay for, if they were not free. Worthy of note is the following in the list: Wordpress.org: The benefit of blogging with WP is so significant (SEO, functionality, flexibility) that it’s well worth paying for. I’d probably pay a $200 for an installation… which makes me realize how much I rely on the product. This is an incredibly interesting line of thought and I am sure a lot of Web 2.0 companies/services would kill to have more user data and input on this. I strongly believe that revenue models and monetization techniques are the stuff that make or break a company in spite of the fantastic idea/concept that it might provide. In that spirit, here is my list of 12 things online (15 things were hard to find quickly) I am willing to pay for. GMail: Without a doubt my one most used tools online. I returned to GMail a few years ago and cannot imagine my life without it....
7 Different Ways To Use WordPress
2008-05-12 02:24:00 Since the 2.x release of WordPress, the blogging platform has more and more been praised because of its versatility. Obviously, WordPress is mostly known as a blog platform, but depending on your creativity, you can do much more with the very flexible platform. No limits are set and over the next weeks we will dig a little deeper into some of the ways WordPress can be used, helping you with the (coding) basics to use WP as more than a blogging platform. For now I will list the different options WP can be used for. This list is not limited. Blogging Platform Blogging obviously is the main usage of WordPress. Photoblog Because it is very simple to upload images with WordPress soon users started to regularly post photos, using WordPress as a photoblog. Until the release of WP2.5 photobloggers had to use the custom fields to upload thumbnails for the archive or to create a filmstrip in the footer. With the new media uploader in WP2.5 this is not longer needed. WP now automatically gener... More About: Wordpress

Theme Designers And Print.CSS
2008-05-11 15:03:00 Here at WeblogToolsCollection, we see quite a bit of WordPress theme releases coming through our inbox and I’ve noticed a trend. Hardly any of them include printing support. The question I’d like to have answered is why? Is adding printer support to WordPress themes too hard? Does adding this feature take up time? Or is it that this feature is barely any use to anyone? For those wanting to add this type of support to your theme, you can install WP-Print . WP-Print picks up where most theme authors have left off by providing printing support in such a way that end users can print either articles or comments, depending on how you have configured the plugin. In fact, doing a search on the plugin database for the keyword of “print” brought up two pages worth of search results. Another solution for you theme authors out there is called Bunny’s Print CSS. This plugin provides two files, print-css.php which is the plugin file and print.css which is the print st... More About: Designers , Theme
How To: Display Adsense On Your First Post Within The Loop
2008-05-11 13:00:00 This guest post was written by Leland of Theme Lab, where he has released over 50 WordPress themes. In addition to themes, Theme Lab also provides some WordPress guides. If you have WordPress knowledge and are interested in writing a post for Hack WordPress, please contact us. In this guide you’ll learn how to display Adsense on just your first post within the Loop . Sure, there may be plugins that will do this for you. This guide, however, will use code examples to accomplish the same thing by editing your WordPress theme. The first step is to open up your index.php file in your theme editor. Find the following line: <?php if(have_posts()) : ?> Just above that, insert the following like this: <?php $i = 1; ?> <?php if(have_posts()) : ?> Now, scroll down a bit until you find this line: <?php endwhile; ?> Insert the following above it, like so: <?php $i++; ?> <?php endwhile; ?> The final step is to insert your Adsense code. Locate where ex... More About: Post , Display , First Post

The Wise Man Said
2008-05-11 10:37:00 The wise man said that you shouldn’t pick your nose in public. The other day I received an email from a reader asking me whether it is easy to start making money with a blog and how fast she could quit her day job if she started now. Hello?! I mean, excuse me. You can’t just start to make money like that. You will need a plan and work it to be successful and it certainly won’t happen overnight either. Quitting your day job sounds like fun that most of us would enjoy, but sadly most never will. Here is problem number one: most people have the false belief that it is relatively easy to make money online with a blog or a website. They read an inflated and hyped up sale message and think, “gee, I can do that too”. It is easy to underestimate what it really takes to become successful when we dream. Really, we can’t be blamed or can we? As the wise man said, don’t quit your day job before you are absolutely sure that your business will support yo... More About: Wise
Habari PHP weblog software
2008-05-11 10:32:00 Having a lot of work stacked up and nothing fun to do, I decided to ignore the work and give Habari a test installation on a localhost, just play around with it for an hour or two and see what the deal was with the core code. To be scrupulously fair, these vague observations are the product of an hour or so, and of course, not authoritative in that regard. Against this, I have no great love for the present direction of WordPress… 2.5 seems laudable in most ideas, but not quite the finished version at present - there is still the spectre of bloat here, and I don’t think viable competition would do WordPress any harm at all. New WordPress stuff to look forward to
More articles from this author:2008-05-11 02:14:00 I’ve been hard at work these past couple of weeks putting together several new WordPress goodies for everyone. I’m pretty excited about some of the results I’m getting with the work I’ve been doing. Here are some things to look forward to this month: Unveiling of a new super image script. Structure theme update. Options theme update. Random quotes plugin. Project M. New image script I wanted to write about this first because it ties into both of my theme updates. Traditionally, magazine- or CMS-type blog designs require you to enter image URLs through custom fields. Many users find this difficult or time consuming (I don’t personally think it’s too time consuming, but I’ve probably used custom fields a few thousand times for this). With this new script, you’ll never have to use custom fields for your thumbnails, feature images, and so on. However, it’s fully compatible with the custom field keys you define. With one line o...
