Recursion is calling a procedure from itself, directly or via callsto other procedures. FORTRAN 77 does not allow recursion, Fortran 90does, but requires it to be explicitly stated.Recursion is not computationally efficient, as there is an overheadassociated with each procedure call; however in the name of goodprogramming we may agree to bear that overhead.Recursion is important because the natural solution to some problemsis a recursive algorithm, for example: Identifying pixels belonging to the same 'blob' Searching a tree-structured data baseProgramming a recursive algorithm is difficult; every small mistakeis amplified manyfold and renders the procedure useless.You can simulate recursion in FORTRAN 77, but with the maturity ofFortran-90 compilers, and their low cost, this makes little sense.
