Surprise, surprise: ol' Dead-Eye Dick doesn't think that the law applies to him.House investigators have learned that over the objections of the National Archives, Vice President Cheney exempted his office from a presidential executive order designed to safeguard classified national security information. According to a letter from House oversight chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA): ? Since 2003, Cheney?s office has failed to provide data on its classification and declassification activities as required by Executive Order 12958, which President Bush has amended and endorsed. ? In 2004, Cheney?s office specifically intervened to block an on-site inspection by the Information Security Oversight Office (ISOO), which is a requirement of the executive order. This is my favorite part. The Office of the Vice President has asserted that it is not an ?entity within the executive branch? and hence is not subject to presidential executive orders. Waxman writes, ?To my knowledge, this was the first...

I am not a legal expert, my collective legal experience coming from a handful of traffic tickets I've accumulated over the years, but this decision of yours begs the question: Have you taken complete leave of your senses? While the word may indeed be a very ugly word, I wonder if you'd take a moment to consider that rape is a very ugly crime. The very notion of being able to casually set aside a well-established legal term for such a reprehensible affront against a person on the notion that juries should not hear about such abased behavior is asinine at the very least. Waiting in the Fast Lane
2007-06-21 19:50:00
Heck, who needs the TSA to jam you up at the airport when there are perfectly good airlines who will make you wait in a confined aluminum tube for over seven hours?Nearly 400 passengers were stranded aboard a Cathay Pacific Airways jet for more than seven hours Tuesday at San Francisco International Airport, adding yet another planeload of angry consumers to a growing industry backlash.Passengers boarded Flight CX873 to Hong Kong just after midnight Tuesday for a 1:20 a.m. departure. But the Boeing 747 never left the gate."We sat there three hours before they said anything," said Mark Valenta, a newlywed for whom the flight was to have been the start of a dream honeymoon to Asia. "Then the PA system went down, the lights were going on and off, babies were crying. It was a nightmare."And it lasted the entire night. It wasn't until 7:30 a.m. that the flight finally was canceled due to equipment problems and passengers disembarked. Somehow, I don't think that Cathay Pacific will be wi...

It's A Gas
2007-06-20 21:49:00
Did you ever get that sinking feeling that you were paying more for gas in the summer? That's because you are. It?s not just increased demand that sends summertime gasoline prices soaring. It?s also the increased temperature. As the temperature rises, liquid gasoline expands and the amount of energy in each gallon drops. Since gas is priced at a 60-degree standard and gas pumps don?t adjust for any temperature changes, motorists often get less bang for their buck in warmer weather.Consumer watchdog groups warn that the temperature hike could end up costing consumers between 3 and 9 cents a gallon at the pump. The effect could cost U.S. drivers more than $1.5 billion in the summertime, including $228 million to drivers in California alone, according to the House Subcommittee on Domestic Policy, which recently addressed it in hearings. The committee?s chair, Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, has long been an advocate on the issue and has new clout as a member of the congressional majority.Na...

A Tale of Two Record Companies
2007-06-20 18:08:00
Compare and constrast.EMI has DRM free sales boomRECORD OUTFIT EMI is reporting that the sales results for its DRM-free music are better than those with protection.Since EMI ditched the DRM on iTunes it has seen sales of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon increase by between 272 and 350 percent. It is too early to tell if this is just a temporary rise as punters replace their old DRM infected tracks with those which are protection free. However it does look like punters have given the record labels the thumbs up for DRM free music. Sony Cutting Jobs at Online Music Store(AP) -- Internet music retailer Sony Connect Inc. is eliminating some positions as part of a restructuring plan to shift resources to other online services, but it intends to continue operating, the company said Tuesday. The company denied a report that suggested the job cuts are a prelude to shutting down its music service in a matter of weeks.Sony Connect is shifting emphasis to other network services, specifically o...

Demon Mecha Cartoons
2007-06-20 01:31:00
This tickled me, mainly because Voltron and Transformers were two of my favorite cartoons as a kid.You know something? I didn't see the third part of the Unholy Cart oon Trinity mentioned anywhere in this video, especially as it was even more violent back in the day than either of the two cartoons they mentioned. But hey, that show didn't have large demonic mecha in it. And it espoused good ol' American values like guns and patriotism and YO JOE!, so I guess that they had to give it a pass.Good thing they never got around to seeing my favorite 80s anime.Demon mecha, alien invaders from the pits of hell, strange flowers that gave mystic powers and pretty foreign girls distracting virile young men from their God-given duty of defending the earth. Ooooh, I can just feel the wickedness seeping into my bones.Via Lawyers, Guns and Money.technorati tags: cartoons, 80s, wingnuts, stupidity

All Alone in the Night
2007-06-20 00:54:00
I have no words. On a daytime patrol in central Baghdad just over than a week ago, a U.S. military advisory team and Iraqi soldiers happened to look over a wall and found something horrific."They saw multiple bodies laying on the floor of the facility," Staff Sgt. Mitchell Gibson of the 82nd Airborne Division told CBS News chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan. "They thought they were all dead, so they threw a basketball (to) try and get some attention, and actually one of the kids lifted up their head, tilted it over and just looked and then went back down. And they said, 'oh, they're alive' and so they went into the building."Inside the building, a government-run orphanage for special needs children, the soldiers found more emaciated little bodies tied to the cribs. They had been kept this way for more than a month, according to the soldiers called in to rescue the 24 boys."I saw children that you could see literally every bone in their body that were so skinny, they had no ene...

And yes, I have memorized this whole quote.Rufus T. Firefly: Well, that covers a lot of ground. Say, you cover a lot of ground yourself. You better beat it - I hear they're going to tear you down and put up an office building where you're standing. You can leave in a taxi. If you can't get a taxi, you can leave in a huff. If that's too soon, you can leave in a minute and a huff. You know, you haven't stopped talking since I came here? CNN's John Roberts on presidential candidate Mitt Romney:But, as the Reverend Jerry Falwell said before his death, "As long as a candidate is pro-life and pro-family, he's all right with me." We do definitely know that Mitt Romney is pro-family. The jury is still out among some conservatives as to whether or not he is in fact pro-life or remains, as he was as governor of Massachusetts, quote, "effectively pro-choice."A few things:Jerry Falwell?!? Are you guys in the media still treating that idiot as if he ever had a valid point? And the phrase you are stumbling around for at the beginning of this paragraph is "the late, unlamented Reverend Jerry Falwell".Ummm, "pro-family" - what exactly does that mean? Perhaps you could be so good as to point me to a presidential candidate that has come out as "anti-family", because it occurs to me that this person would be really interesting to listen to for an hour or so. Otherwise, using logical fallacies such as "pro-family" (especially w...

Reading my feeds is also going to be a nightmare, cuz I can only do this on the Blackberry.800 items filtered through a small, monochrome screen.I knew I should have brought a book with me.UPDATE: I have wrested away control of the computer, mostly on the basis of "there ain't nobody callin' right now".As you were.

The shapes of the clouds danced all around the Colonel. He could almost imagine them moving into the shapes his mind created, ever changing from one to the next at his whim. He tried not to think of why this could happen and instead concentrated on clearing his mind. The psionic suppressants helped to a certain extent, of course, but occasionally a stray thought would leak out and he would see the faces of the people he knew so very briefly take shape in the distant clouds."Sir?"The Colonel was broken from his reverie by the young lieutenant in the seat in front of him. This lieutenant - Batson, that was his name - was a young and ambitious, like most pilots in the program. Called by the Siren's Song
2007-06-18 23:03:00
Last night, I was entranced by a mermaid.Mom and Pop haven't been out of the house very much lately. They've been saving their pennies for the impending move to Albuquerque. (Digression: I should really rename this blog to journeys of an empty head.) Therefore, having a bit of fun now and then is mostly be contained to having a few friends over now and again. So when I heard that the fair Jane Monheit was putting in an appearance not far from me, I knew exactly how to get them out of the house. Of course, I was also looking forward to going to the show myself, as Ms. Monheit is one of my very favorite singers, so I got to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. I quickly booked the tickets and impatiently waited for the calendar to turn to June.Very impatiently.A few things about the Coach House: One of things you first learn about the Coach House was that it was a very unprepossessing spot for a concert, at least from the outside. The outside resembles a long block of p...

Apparently, I touched a nerve yesterday.Jclark666:Oh, you missed something critical, all right. At 1:00 on the second video, the guard points her to the exit and turns around. She stops, unscrews the lid of the cup, pours it on the ground, and tries to turn around and go back through the unscreened exit. Accidentally spilled it while trying to drink it, my ass.David Helms:I'm amazed at the Mark Frauenfelder's review of this video and yours as well. Jclark666 is absolutely right. She clearly dumps the contents of the cup on the flow and attempts to return directly into the sterile area from the exit. I'm as against stupid abuses of power as the next guy, but this woman was clearly responsible for the incident and from all indications, lacking audio, the TSA employees acted respectfully and within the bounds of their authority. I applaud TSA for providing the video and the report and letting them speak for themselves.Hmmm. Interesting.Well, folks, you are definitely smarter than m...
