Facebook Finds India Essential: Golden Age Of Social Networking?
2012-02-06 09:01:00 Mankind’s basic need is to stay & feel connected. This is echoed perfectly in Facebook data analyst, Inside Facebook Gold’s 2011 data which revealed that India was the third biggest Facebook market after US and Indonesia. In terms of growth rate, at 162.4 per cent, India is second only to Brazil. No wonder, Facebook finds India indispensable. We tried to analyze the reasons: Orkut was the pioneer of Social Networking . Facebook, which still respects Orkut, however, swept the ground from under its feet. We think, owing to Orkut’s cluttered interface & growing menace of SPAM, users, slowly but steadily shifted towards the simpler & fun to use interface of FB. On the other hand, Google+ may be growing, but it has still to go viral in India. Guess FB has the first mover advantage here? One might say, Orkut pulled-in the crowd & Facebook kept them engaged! FaceBook has always maintained a streamline approach & “The Wall” concept was simply brillian... More About: Social Networking
Google & Facebook bow down partially: Confirm Conformity To Court
2012-02-06 07:50:00 Google & Facebook have individually filed a compliance report confirming removal of objectionable material. Today, proceedings began in a civil suit against Facebook, Google and 20 other social networking sites for posting objectionable content on the web began in a Delhi court. And on the first day itself, FaceBook has stated that it has removed the objectionable material from its website. Similar compliance report was also filed by Google India’s representatives. In the earlier hearing, the lower Court had asked to remove all the objectionable content. It had further asked these sites to investigate & file reports on possible measures taken by them to screen such content & prevent it from being broadcasted. While the web-giants have ensured removal of the content, they have appealed to the courts about the “Screening” part. One can easily imagine how difficult or rather impossible it is to actually screen or censor content with Billions of users uploading conten... More About: Google

Google Hires Bouncer For Android Market Party
2012-02-03 12:54:00 Google’s Android ecosystem has been getting a lot of flak since malicious apps were discovered in the Android Market last year. Google had to remotely swipe off these entire app from every user’s phone. Besides the fact that kind of access into my personal phone is a little creepy, this ‘remote swiping’ did not actually offer a solution since Google would find out about these apps only after they had infected user’s phone. Now, Google has announced that they may have finally have the solution to this problem it’s called the ‘Bouncer’. The Bouncer is a server side application which scours the apps that have been submitted to the Market to find out about any malicious activity. This service will not only check for new applications but will also scan pre-existing apps. “Device activations grew 250% year-on-year, and the total number of app downloads from Android Market topped 11 billion,” Hiroshi Lockheimer, VP of engineering, posted on the Google Mobile Blog. ... Orkut Still A Contender Reveals Facebook’s IPO Filing!
2012-02-03 12:48:00 Facebook feels that Orkut is still a worthy adversary for it in India. One of the largest, Facebook’s IPO filling keeps revealing many interesting tidbits. We recently wrote about how Facebook actually accepted it had rivals. But considering Orkut to be one of them is, well, amusing in the least. Sure it was a huge rage when Google introduced it. We remember filling in so many fun trivia & quizzes. However, since Facebook reared in India, people have literally forgotten Orkut. While Facebook may consider it a rival lets evaluate; Why? Facebook has named others along with Orkut, such as Cyworld in Korea, Mixi in Japan, vKontakte in Russia & of course Orkut in India as well as Brazil. These are being referred to as Social Networks with Deep Regional Roots. Nonetheless, together they have sizable population of active & passive users attached to them. This has directly affected Facebook’s march in these regions. In their absence Facebook would have garnered considerably... More About: Facebook
Bharatmatrimony Cries Foul: Appeals To CCI Against Google
2012-02-03 12:30:00 Matrimonial heavy-hitter BharatMatrimony has filed a complaint against Google with the Competition Commission of India (CCI). Accusing Google of discriminatory trade practices related to its AdWords program, BharaMatrimony feels Google is playing unfair with its Adwords. BharatMatrimony, in its complaint has said, Google’s Adwords relating to its websites are being sold to rival parties such as Shaadi.com, and Jeevansaathi.com. The increasing number of “Competition Law” complaints against Google globally may suggest a pattern of Anti-Competitive conduct. In India, the protectors of law may argue that this needs to be checked in order to protect Indian businesses and consumers. However, we keep forgetting that Google is a profit making organization. Its money comes from Advertising. In light of these facts, why shouldn’t Google resort to such measures that ensure its revenue increases? While Google has sort of become a de facto when its comes to searching for anything on...

2012-02-02 13:37:00 The humble mobile phone, which started out as an instrument to simply make and receive phone calls, has evolved into so much more. Its use cases have been so extensive that it is impossible for anyone to have predicted it. With the boom of smartphones and mobile applications, cell phones may soon replace another person: the travel agent. In the words of Scott Durchslag, president, Expedia Worldwide, Travel is intrinsically a mobile experience. Hence mobile phones and hotel and travel bookings go together like bread and butter. This is why consumers are using their cell phones to make hotel reservations and alter travel plans at an increased rate each year. A number of International Hotel chains have recognized the need and supplied Mobile Apps and Mobile Websites. In December last year, Marriott International launched free Android and iOS ... Facebook’s timeline will soon be made mandatory and will enable anyone to go through Facebook profiles by date. Govt. Issues Show-Cause Notices To TelCos For Under – Reporting Reven
2012-02-02 06:37:00 India’s Department of Telecom (DoT) has issued Show Cause Notices to India’s five private operators, including Bharti Airtel , Vodafone and Reliance Communications, for under reporting revenues. As per a special audit report conducted for the period between 2006 to 2008, gross discrepancies about the actual revenue generated & the one reported, were found. This was allegedly done in order to pay much lower license fees. This has resulted in a loss of over Rs. 1600 Crores (US$ 330 Million) that is now being sought from the TelCos. Communications Minister Mr. Sibal confirmed the same yesterday & his department has put forth a condition to deposit about 1000 Crores immediately & only after that the companies will get to meet the Minister face-to-face to explain their side of the story. Though this feels kind of a dictatorial attitude, the news, if true will have serious bearing for the Telcos who are already reeling under the pressure of the 2G Scam & 3G fiasco. Ho... Twitter CEO Justifies Twitter’s New Policies: Helping Freedom Of Spee
2012-01-31 12:16:00 We wrote earlier how Twitter censoring some tweets based on requests by Governments is detrimental to social communication as a medium. This caused an outrage on the social network and Tweeps protested this announcement with #TwitterBlackout. Twitter CEO, Dick Costolo has argued that Twitter is still transparent and the current policies are for the good for the communications platform. Costolo argued that Twitter’s new policy is in fact helping freedom of speech. He said that earlier if a Government demanded that Twitter remove a tweet or block a user, they had to comply. Now with the new policies the content will be censored but only in the country that has demanded it. Twitter will try its best that they do not go ahead with this but if the demands are rigid then they will only censor the content in that country. This is actually a very good thing. If you tweet something considered to be against the law, your tweet will still be visible to the world even though it may be b... More About: Freedom , Policies

BlackBerry Losing Its Grip On The Market Share?
2012-01-31 11:57:00 Once, BlackBerry was the default choice of enterprise customers for their communication needs. But, that is changing fast, especially in the established markets like North America and Europe, according to a New York Times report. Apple has captured a significant market share from Reserach In Motion (the makers of BlackBerry) in North America, where it once was a dominant player. Samsung is slated to do the same in the other established market of RIM i.e. Europe with its Android operating system. BlackBerry is still going strong in developing markets. But, it is finding it difficult to hold on to its market share in more developed countries. While Apple Inc’s iOS and Google Inc’s Android operating systems have captured a lot of imagination, RIM has failed to innovate in recent years. Hence, many enterprise customers are switching from BlackBerry to other platforms. According to a recent global survey on information workers by research firm Forrester, 27% smartphon... E -commerce is growing rapidly & Internet is being adopted at a higher pace in such smaller towns. Thus, Flipkart’s strategy to cater to such audiences seems appropriate. The only hurdles that we see are that of logistics & distribution. However, companies, when going for expansion, first take care of such high priority problems. Twitter Moves Towards Content Curation
2012-01-31 06:35:00 Why is Twitter insanely popular? That is because it is the perfect tool to send out byte sized opinions and news. It’s micro-blogging nature, the presence of Celebrities and even Politicians are the biggest things going for it as a social communications platform. As last year came to a close it was the star when it came to generating buzz, but the real question is, ‘Is Twitter looking at a new direction?’The first indication of this comes from the Twitter 3.0 design that they pushed out last year. The design was awesome and was consistent even on its mobile apps. They added ‘Home, ‘Connect’ and ‘Discover’ tabs to the interface and let go of the old ones like ‘re-tweets and mentions’. Twitter doesn’t want people using third-party clients either. Here, the ‘Discover tab’ is of some significance. When you click on it it you are treated to a very visual kind of summary of the days trending topics. Here’s an example: Now look at the latest startup that Twi... More About: Content
