‘Building The Digital Commerce Ecosystem’ – Need Of The H
2009-11-30 12:09:00
The first of the series of panel discussions was on Building the Digital Commerce Ecosystem, Amitabh Pandey, resident and Head eBusiness, Thomas Cook moderated the session. He started the discussion with the Theory of unbalanced growth he studied in the college, he said in 2002 there was no infrastructure and now when the infrastructure is there , there is no business. He then passed the discussion to Rishi Khiani, CEO,  Times Internet Limited. Rishi then pointed out that we have come a long way in terms of infrastructure and that most of the investment these days is going into the buzz words such as Location Based Services, P2P services and now Augmented reality, he said that one has to look at how big a population is these services catering to.  Rishi said there is a need to create utilities, utilities that could add value and cater to 300 to 400 million. Vivek Nayak of Avenues India then took over the session adding the payment gateways’ perspective to the discussion. He...
Acer To Launch Sub 20K Android Phones By Dec 2009
2009-11-30 10:14:00
Acer , a well known name in the personal computer market is trying to increase its presence in the mobile handset market by launching 2-4 Android based handsets in Dec 2009 and will join the Android race in India started by HTC and Samsung. Acer has already entered into the Indian market with 8 mobile handsets running Microsoft Windows Mobile but was not able to get a lot of buyers for them till now. Now it is trying to appeal to a different audience by launching Android based handsets. Most of the Acer Android mobile handsets will be touch screen and priced between 10k to 20k. I guess nobody needs  anymore introduction on Android after WatBlog’s extensive coverage of Android. It seems Acer has struck the right chord with its plan to launch sub 20k handsets as a lot of people (including me ) want to try Android handsets and price is the biggest barrier. iPhone paid the price of being ultra expensive in Indian markets but android may not suffer the same fate going forward. As...

The CATastrophy Saga – When The Online CAT Failed To Purr!
2009-11-30 09:10:00
Well, the news is out. CAT is a failure in its online avatar! You might have read reports from various news sources such as NDTV, Hindu Business Line, Times of India, just to name a few, about the series of happenings all around the cities in India. The most frustrating part of the story is that no-one is willing to take the blame and just playing passing the buck. Well, all I can say is that India is still a long way away when it comes to technology enablement of traditional processes. So, Why did the CAT servers Fail? This, I guess should be the one thing which needs proper research and analysis. Times,  I hope, will let us know the real story, but on prima facie, the common logic that can be arrived to is India’s IT Infrastructure is not able to handle the load during online exams. Giving you all a brief background about the CAT re-invented this year; CAT, i.e. Common Admission Test was supposed to go online for the first time and was to be held during Nov 28th – Decemb...

Rediff Apes Facebook FanPages – Launches Rediff Pages For Products &a
2009-11-30 06:00:00
Rediff has taken a leaf out of Facebook ’s book and launched what could be called a Fanpages clone. Hosted at pages.rediff.com Rediff pages is a product that allows users to create and become fans of products, companies and Celebrities as well. Our sources have informed us that Rediff is contacting celebrities directly to create their own pages. As one may know Fanpages is an immensely popular feature on Facebook and is used by celebrities and companies to promote their products. Infact social media agencies have come up which help brands maintain and scale these fan pages. Rediff’s product seems more like a simplistic version of the fanpage feature on facebook. Rediff has been trying to become social since sometime now and we have covered multiple of their attempts at doing so. Even their last quarter results hinted at their affinity to go more social inorder to increase stickiness for their portal. While such standalone features are good rediff needs to integrate all i...

2009-11-30 05:38:00
With the recession slowly phasing out and with the increase in user spending capability, many new e-commerce  startups are trying to make their mark in the yet to be harnessed Indian e-commerce market. According to the recent survey by Visa, the average expenditure of Asian citizen is around $2066  in a year and  in India more than 22% of this share is used for booking travel tickets and hotels. Google Causes Market Disruption With New Free GPS Product
2009-11-27 13:33:00
Google seems to be getting on the nerves of GPS manufacturers with their latest innovation. Recently in news, Google launched their GPS product as part of the Motorola Droid handset  which is now being sold by Verizon Wireless. For now just in USA, but what if they happen to launch it globally to take on all the global GPS players? That would change the entire market for them, wouldn’t it? For now the enhancement to the Android mobile operating system will include a full GPS navigation solution. Every single GPS device manufacturer will be disappointed with Google for this disruption. Year 2009 has already been a groovy year for the Google operating system product, with tons of introductions just in the last few months which WATBlog has nearly covered. Earlier today we saw Google helping out the USA’s bid to entice foreign firms to invest in Iraq by putting up the thousands of the Iraqi National Museum’s image. Before that, we wrote about Airtel’s tie up wi...

Some Telcos Favour Delinking While Some Oppose – To Link, Or Not To L
2009-11-27 12:33:00
In true sense the turning point of Indian Telecom Industry was November 2003, when ‘Unified’ Access Service Licensing was introduced. Earlier, The BSOs (Basic Service Operators) or the guys who provide you services popularly known as landline, had a different licensing regime as compared to Wireless or Mobile Operators. In the early 2000s Government issued Licenses to BSOs for operating WLL(M)s (Walky, as Tata popularised it). These WLLs or Wireless in Local Loops, were very handy, cheap at cost and more like traditional phones, hence having their own appeal to a typical different genre. They started giving tough competitions to the GSM, and the GSM operators started facing some losses. The fight entered courtroom, and the Court ordered the Government of India to look into the matter. In an effort to seek a solution, TRAI issued its “Consultation Paper on Unified Access Services Licensing (UASL)” for basic and cellular services on 16 July 2003.  On 27 October 2003, it prod...

On SMS Volumes, Interconnect Charges & Impact On Bulk SMS Players
2009-11-27 12:21:00
SMS is probably the second most used feature in a mobile phone after voice. No doubt then that in a market as large as 500 million plus mobile subscribers SMS forms for sizable usage. According to a recent Gartner report its expected that mobile messaging volumes in India will reach 191.6 billion messages in 2013. This means that SMSing is going to grow atleast for another 3 years. Now the recent point of discussion in the telecom circle has been the impact of Interconnect charges and how would Bulk SMS players cope with the same. Firstly a lowdown of what Interconnect charges  really are? Interconnection involves a linking up of one telecom operator to the infrastructure facilities of another. Interconnections can be considered in terms of network interconnection and access interconnection. The former takes place between operators possessing networks, and the latter between an operator with a network and another without one. Interconnection charges include charges for collecting ...

How To Effectively Advertise On YouTube: Google Chrome Shows You How
2009-11-27 09:40:00
The video that I saw nearly has around 300,000 views, and it is being advertised with large banner ad by Google on YouTube. So I am presuming this is new and that not many have seen it already, pardon my ignorance if that isn’t the case. However, not much has been spoken about how brands and advertisers can leverage  the YouTube the same way, so I think it is an interesting case study nevertheless to see. Cut to the Chase Today I was greeted on YouTube by a banner in a size that I have never seen before, and never imagined to see on a Google’ driven site. This is how it looked. Baap of Banners That’s a pretty big banner, and it is the first time I am seeing it on Youtube . It can probably mean a few things: This is just a test they’re trying to see how people react to such a banner Or this is more than a test and YouTube has launched this type of advertising that others can also try and use on YouTube Thirdly, it is just a bid to push Chrome and won’t...
Google Harks Back In Time Reviving Iraq’s Lost Glory
2009-11-27 08:36:00
It’s been around 24 hours since we wrote about the Iraq i Government coming out on the internet to spread their word since the American invasion of Iraq. This followed by a Josh-type rage of many Mumbaikars pertaining to the one year anniversary of the 26/11 terrorist attacks on Mumbai. There were music concerts and candle light vigils all around the city, but like someone rightly said ‘you don’t feel the pain unless you’ve lost someone from your own family.’ I totally agree with NSG commando Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s father when he said that everyone wants a hero in their neighbourhood, but in their own homes. Stories and their outcome remain, as they get lost somewhere in the pages of uncertainty after few years. With no glory justified to the history of mankind, there’s one true master which keeps it alive, the internet. Reviving the images of epical tales and chronicles of the past, Google decides to do something for Iraq’s National M...

Will You Access Facebook On Your TV Sets Whilst Your Family Is Around?
2009-11-27 07:31:00
There was a time when people used to call it an ‘idiot box‘ and then came the time during the Gulf War when they were glued to their couch watching CNN news to get live updates from the war zone for the very first time. Now is a slightly different story with all the terrorism hoo-hah all around which makes shootouts looks so common that a dinner is never complete without a bloodshed. The irony lies within the fact that entertainment is so much in our heads, we let go all the bathetic blunders just to watch the mess around us. Nevertheless, this news is about social networking coming to your TV sets with Logic Eastern’s latest innovation. Some of the most visited websites used by Indians are Gmail, YouTube and Facebook which can now be accessed on cable TV. Noida-based manufacturer of cable infrastructure, Logic Eastern claims to be the first one to do so among other Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) companies and the Direct-to-Home (DTH) operators. But I guess t...

BSE Revamps Site, To Make It Available In Other Regional Languages
2009-11-26 12:32:00
BSE from a long time has been revamping its site by beta-testing cleaner and useful interface for its site. The changes have been made live on homepage but are yet to be furnished on to inner pages. The new interface shows more information than just plain stock quotes. It also launched the website in Hindi and Gujarati some time back to offer service to diversified set of investors. Now it will be launching the site in other regional languages like Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Punjabi. It is unknown whether they are doing it under pressure from recent spat of attacks from MNS, a regional political party. These changes although will find limited usages as majority of financial investors are well versed in Hindi or English or Gujrati. NSE has been on a revamp mode too as it re-aligned its portal with various features and has also been making waves through its social media initiatives. These online initiatives are also proliferating due to the growing competition between...

Microsoft Ventures Into Indian Language Transliteration Tools
2009-11-26 12:20:00
Only 1.2 crore homes that have PCs versus 45 crore mobile phones in India – Microsoft seems to have a solution to that large difference. Lack of English language literacy prevents that difference to descend, which Microsoft India are looking to figure out. Recently in news, Microsoft Corporation announced release of transliteration tools for six Indian languages – Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Bengali, Kannada and Malayalam. At WATBlog, we covered Google’s invention of the all new Google Translate which is known for its instantaneous translation skils of 51 languages including Hindi. But their work on Indian languages wasn’t that great as expected. Google’s Text-to-Speech support for other scripts also being in the pipeline, Microsoft’s transliteration tool emerges for as a rescue for desktops. Necessity being the mother of invention, this new tool shall be available in both web and desktop versions. This tool will enable users to type a language in phonetic ...

Average Indian Spends Less Than 1 lakh A Year Via E-Commerce – Visa S
2009-11-26 08:40:00
In the first WATBlog panel discussion that we held in IIT last year a point was made about how the fortunes of online advertising in India is connected with the growth of ecommerce. The same point was reiterated again in the WATBlog panel at IIM Bangalore as well a few months ago. Now if we consider this a fair assumption then what Visa has found via its consumer survey study can be at best termed as disappointing when it comes to online ecommerce in India. Visa in its Consumer Monitor study for Q2 2009 have come up with the following findings: Confidence in ecommerce: One in three respondents polled reported that they were very confident when using their payment cards online. Driver of online shopping: “Freedom to shop anytime” is main driver for online shopping Top three reasons for shopping online: ‘the freedom to shop anytime’ (75 percent), ‘the ability to compare prices and save money’ (74 percent) and ’save time’ (74 percent). ...

2009-11-26 08:07:00
After the American invasion of Iraq, there have been talks about the attacks on Baghdad being illegal. ‘The Independent’, UK revealed the discussion between the British and US officials two years before the invasion with an idea to remove their dictator. Then after Saddam Hussein was captured, the whole drama about his life sentence kept Iraq in the limelight for quite sometime. Here’s what they do from here. They choose the online medium to reach their people and others across the globe to make their point or rather “to present their message”. The Iraqi Government announced their presence online and using technology, their National Center for Information created a YouTube Channel for the Iraqi Government. This channel will be used as new and advanced mode of communication. The Iraqi Government will be hereby committed to this technology to connect with various International communities and those who follow the issues of Iraq. This being one of those d...

HR and Marketing Shake Hands and Decide to Merge in the Newly Social and Di
2009-11-25 17:35:00
The more I look the more I feel HR and Marketing will Merge in the Digital Social Media I first began looking to correlate HR and marketing a good 4 or 5 years back for a human resource management project during my BMS days. And while I suddenly realize it to be a long time, I also applaud my own vision back then. Jokes apart, digital media and social media in particular by powering people’s need for self expression is creating momentous changes in the way both brands as well as entire businesses function. And in the process it a business and its brands cease to seem separate. Which then suggests that the partners of a brand (usually consumers) and partners of a business (usually employees) cease to seem separate. This is the idea, and I must admit I see it echoing on various minds these days in some form or the other. Going back a little into our high school science journals, I’d like to place some observations to validate this hypothesis if I can call it one. They a...

Twitter To Launch Paid Accounts From Next Year – Will It Affect The C
2009-11-25 09:38:00
Many social networks are finding ways to monetize their services so as to justify their soaring valuations. Twitter is a similar case in hand as after touching a record valuation it is doing everything possible to monetize its service without attracting ire from its users. Paid accounts seems to be one area where Twitter is expecting huge revenues going forward. Many companies and media houses currently use Twitter as a tool to update their followers regarding news, product updates & offers. Twitter is expected to give paid users, a feedback and statistics tool to derive more value from their social media profile. Twitter at the same time has conveyed that it will not force paid accounts on businesses and would make it a add-on service sometime next year. Many companies will like to own paid accounts on Twitter if they are given certain added advantage to know and exploit their follower base. If Twitter could build a collection of services through acquisition of comp...

3G Auction Delayed AGAIN!!
2009-11-25 08:54:00
Here are the pointers, as we have condemned any more analysis on the farcical 3G Saga and their phoney hoped-for calendar! January 14 ain’t happening anymore as DoT and the defence ministry are yet to work out the specific frequencies or sub-bands of the airwaves, which can be assigned to telcos. Airwaves are yet to be emptied by the armed forces for the 25 MHz of 3G spectrum for the auctions. The auctions will be held before the end of this fiscal, said a DoT official quoted by ET. 3G auctions take place only after sector regulator TRAI issues recommendations on a slew of policy related issues. TRAI set to come out its recommendations only by December-end or early-January DoT that it would compete the alternate network fibre cable for the armed forces by December 2012 On the other hand, mobile 4G trials are picking up pace, with operators eager to roll out 4G networks as soon as possible in UK. Indian ABI Research analyst Bhavya Khanna said, “In order to keep up with...

Tie-up Fiesta – Spice Digital To SMS Ads And Travel Details To IRCTC
2009-11-25 07:50:00
IRCTC has come a long way in the e-commerce space in India since its estimated gross annual sales of Rs.3400 crore comprised 1/3rd of the total e-commerce industry worth Rs. 9000 crores in India. This time in news, IRCTC ties up with Spice Digital in an agreement which benefits both parties. So next time a user books a ticket online via IRCTC, he will receive an SMS which will consist of the booking details, such as the PNR (Passenger Name Record) number, the date of journey, class of travel, and originating & destination stations. IRCTC has been witnessing a healthy annual growth of 100% in the number of tickets sold through online initiatives which stood at 45 million tickets in FY’08. This literally means that Spice Digital’s move of bearing the costs of sending SMSes on behalf of IRCTC will have a formidable reach in terms of advertising. That’s right, without any extra charge levied to a user, and without IRCTC spending a single penny, a wholesome amount ...

How to Create Buzz Through Social Media
2009-11-24 19:10:00
OR maybe I should name this how you can’t create buzz through social media. The idea is this, today I as discussing with a friend an approach taken by a firm to promote its apparent social cause on Twitter. I would have named it but I don’t want it sound as if I am constantly against this company and its digital marketing efforts. Anyway this is the case: the brand has a deadline based promotion. It hasn’t taken any effort till now to build a community or let’s say a strong community on social media. And now within a certain span of time it has to build buzz, so naturally social media – the shining star, the in thing, the highlight of the night has to be part of the picture. This is where the script goes wrong. The company/agency tries to incite influencers through a canned statement used repeatedly to build mileage and buzz for what they plan to do. And it just seems, and I was not alone a timid approach done for the sake of doing and a public rel...

TRAI To Come Out With Consultation Paper On Tariffs, SMS Prices – A Major
2009-11-24 13:04:00
SMS charges in India are the only telecom charges which have been immune from the fall witnessed in tariffs across the board. If TRAI had their way then SMS charges would also fall in line with other service charges. WATBlog earlier reported the TRAI’s intention to regulate the inter-connection charges for SMS in India. The latest report by TOI suggests that TRAI will soon come out with consultation paper in relation to telecom tariffs prevailing in the market. The consultation paper will question the high pricing method applied specially for messaging services by telcos. Currently the users pay anywhere between 60 paisa to 1 rupee as SMS charges. Although telco’s do offer schemes to provide cheaper SMS tariffs (around 10-15 paisa) but without those add-on packages the message tariffs are almost equal to voice calling charges. At the same time telco’s exclude holidays from add-on packages thus misleading its subscribers regarding higher charges. Now...

Fortune Tellers Become Salaried Tele-Astros Now – They Spell It Big F
2009-11-24 09:19:00
I once heard that the youth brigade or the so called ‘Youngistaan’ have become self-sufficient when it comes to taking their own decisions, at least when it comes to cricket (betting), stock markets or finding a partner! Statistics slightly differ from what we presume, as 80% of the callers using the 24 x 7 astrology services via mobile happen to be young and still seeking face-saving advices from mobile fortunetellers. If you still haven’t figured out where are we talking about, the astrology services available just a dial away seems to be catching instant eruption. At WATBlog we have seen online astrology sites getting into language preferences. Language preference being a big market advantage in the online business, the entire suite of Astro services existing on the English version are now available in Hindi and other regional languages. Gazing At The 3G Saga… Day In And Day Out!
2009-11-24 07:09:00
Dynamics of the Indian Communication Industry have been on a drastic revolution spree since last few months. Be it Price wars, MNP or 3G. Already pegged as the next big thing in Indian telephony, 3G seems to be the only rescuer of this slowly sinking ship. Each player in the current times has so much at stake just to acquire one out of the 4 slots earmarked for each circle. 3G in India has seen lots of action since the idea got conceived. We at WATBlog have always followed majority of  the moves in this regard. And now, finally after a long delay in auction, and the different ministries in the union government coming to a final understanding, ‘The Indicative Itinerary’ for the spectrum allotment has been decided (subject to change according to future inter-ministry conflicts). As we all know, since the very beginning it was decided to carry out the auction in four phases – Invitation Stage, Pre-qualification Stage, Auction Stage and Grant Stage. The central gover...
