Invasion Of Privacy Or Security? 13/7 Blast Case Cracked With The Help Of T
2012-01-30 09:17:00
Though we worry about the constant threats of invasion of privacy from the Government in our lives, some stories help change our perspective. The recent evidence that helped crack the 13/7 Blast s case is one such shining example. In the not so distant past, Government was getting ready to keep a tab on our Social Networking usage. However, how they were going to achieve that was ridiculous. Though the Social scene is yet to be monitored, Indian Government has taken giant leaps in an attempt to keep a check on Anti-Social elements. The Government recently cracked the 13/7 Blasts that rocked various prominent places in Mumbai. Though Govt. was unable to prevent this attack, many such foiled attempts have gone unnoticed. A bomb not exploded, does not make a noise! However, the Indian Cyber Security with the help of various agencies like Mumbai Police, Intelligence Wing of India etc. got to the bottom of this dark hole. Using various Technology tools, the team broke the secrecy of the ...

Mobile Service Black Out As Spat Between Reliance & Etisalat Continue
2012-01-27 09:06:00
Around 1.7 Million Indians are suffering owing to the behavior of two Telecom Giants. Reliance Communication & Etisalat DB. Etilsalat’s customers are facing disruption of services since Friday owing to Reliance Communication disconnecting its services for the company. The Base Stations used by Etisalat are provided by Reliance under a US$ 2 billion, 10-year deal signed in 2009. However, citing long overdue payment for service, Reliance claims it was left with no other choice but to put a break on the tenant. Etisalat DB (EDB) is a joint venture between the United Arab Emirates’ Etisalat and India’s DB Group is not new to finding trouble. With 1.67 Million subscribers, Etisalat is ranked No. 11 in the Mobile Operators List in India for GSM. But owing to this week long disruption, we wonder how long will people wait, till they simply opt for Mobile Number Portability & hop on to someone who pays his dues & offers better service? We tried to analyze, what could have ...

Special Feature: Is Twitter Flirting With Self – Censorship?
2012-01-27 08:45:00
Twitter has established itself as the poster child (social network) of Rebellion against Governments. The evil one’s anyway! When you look at the uprisings last year in Egypt and Libya, you will realize the role Twitter played. In India, Twitter was used to drive awareness about Jan Lokpal and Anna Hazare. It has established itself as the safest bastion of free-speech and anonymity. Twitter allows anonymous accounts as opposed to Facebook and Google+. Everyone feels that even though these other social networks are getting carried away by this whole ‘real name’ thing, Twitter is the safe hideout for those who wish to remain anonymous on the Internet. Looks like this is going to change soon.Twitter has now announced via its blog that they have affected certain changes on its network which will allow it to remove certain sensitive tweets coming from a country if asked to do so by law. This is pretty shocking! They are assuring us before we take umbrage to this, that they will ...

Exploitation Of Trust; A Major Worry For FaceBook. To Fight SPAM With Law!
2012-01-27 08:05:00
Been seeing a lot of links to obscene or vulgar videos supposedly posted by your friends on Facebook & felt they were SPAM? Well Yes they are & Facebook along with Washington DC are trying to win this battle against such “Spam mers”. Adscend Media LLC is at the receiving end of a law-suite filed jointly by Facebook as well the state of Washington. The law-suite is filed to obtain an injunction to prevent the company from spreading Spam links through “misleading and deceptive tactics and has encouraged others to do the same” said Washington state Attorney General Rob McKenna. Why post such videos / content? Well, the concept of SPAM is simple. Elicit a response from a Victim. Furthermore, if the content “Appears” to be posted by a friend / acquaintance, then the chances that the victim will click on the content increase exponentially! This model of posting links on Facebook promising shocking or salacious videos, is called as “ClickJacking”. Such links have co...

Motorola’s Last Balance Sheet In Red While Google Waits Calmly: Golde
2012-01-27 07:09:00
Motorola Mobility’s supposedly last Quarterly Results before it is amalgamated in the Search Giant Google are in Red. Motorola, true to it’s word about a bleak last quarter posted a operating loss of US$ 70 Million. In a nutshell Motorola lost a small fortune to the tune of US$ 285 Million in the last year. Industry speculation were rife with this bleak news & are still worried about Google’s knee-deep involvement in this company. What is Google’s game-plan? We had reported the acquisition deal in August 2011 before the last quarter even began. While the deal appeared to a defensive shield against the ongoing Patent wars, it is not the sole reason. Motorola makes many electronics while smartphones & tablets are just a fraction. A part of the offering is the lucrative Cable-TV business, which Google is eying. Google had also announced its intention to offer a serious competition to iPad3! While from a short-term cost perspective people believe Google did make a mista...

Indian War Comics To Launch Free Digital Version For Aakash Users
2012-01-27 06:29:00
You have to realise that the Digital age has just dawned when you see things like this happen. We have already blogged about the PMO’s office being on Twitter. Now, Indian War Comics (IWC) are going digital too. The latest version of their comic features the stories of Param Vir Chakra winner Bana Singh, Captain Vikram Batra and 26/11 hero, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan. This is a very interesting way to let Indians know the stories of these brave patriots. IWC will launch the Digital version of their comics soon and they will be available free of cost for Aakash and Ubislate tablet users. IWC had already launched e-book and iPad version of their comics online last year in March. They were priced at $1.99 at around that time. Speaking at the launch of the digital version of these comics Army Chief, V.K. Singh said, “This particular idea itself is not only laudable, but I think each one of us must realise that there is something which will make tremendous difference. Those of ...

Google is the top Internet Company in the world today. Its search capabilities are massive and its services are deeply entrenched in the daily deeds and tasks of the modern Internet user. A single change in the algorithm of search engine can send many businesses packing! It has a lot of power but people love Google because it doesn’t act evil. Well, companies like Facebook and Twitter don’t think so. They are calling Google’s new addition to search, ‘Search, plus your world’ a big mistake and an unfair trade practice. First, let’s get down to what Google’s ‘Search, Plus your world’ (SPYW) is. As we mentioned before, it is a social plug-in into the search algorithm which throws up results personalized to you. They have added Google+ support to it and you might see ‘relevant’ results from the fledgling new social network. Here’s how Google looks at this addition. Not looking evil, eh? Akash Delayed Further As IIT-R, Datawind Clash
2012-01-25 11:01:00
The Akash miracle tablet has been in the news ever since it was in its infancy as an ultra-cheap-laptop. It then evolved into an ultra-cheap-tablet. Since months we have been hearing about it hitting the Indian markets, followed by a streamlined, upgraded successor. However, the fact remains that production is still so abysmally low that most pre-orders have not even been fulfilled.  Now, we know why the delays have been occurring and why there are probably going to continue to be future delays. IIT-Rajasthan and Datawind, two of the forces behind the Akash Tablet, are having several disagreements. These are over the specs, quality of tablets and over the payments. Datawind has supplied IIT-R with 10,000 Akash tablets. Out of these, IIT-R have rejected 3000 of them due to Bad Screen Panels and Slow Performance. Also, they haven’t confirmed in writing that they have received the tablets from Datawind. This means Datawind is yet to get paid. An IIT-R official confirmed that ...
Rs. 20 Cr Funding For FreeCharge.in From Sequoia: A New Twist To An Old Gam
2012-01-25 10:36:00
Continuing its funding spree, Sequoia Capital has put up Rs. 20 Crores (USD 4 Million) in FreeChrage.in. FreeCharge allows users to recharge their mobiles in return for discount coupons & the company has been trying to get more & more people to shift their purchases of such small denominations online. It’s a volume game & only large number of users will help monetize this venture. Incidentally, this is the Second investment for Sequoia in the same company since its seed funding last year. The e-recharge company plans to utilize the funds to “Go Mobile”. But since it has ruled out Interactive Voice Response (IVR) based recharge for the time being, going mobile might suggest a revamp of its website to make it mobile-friendly. The other areas that company chose to focus are adding new products and merchants. It has begun well with having 50 retailers and service providers like McDonald’s, Puma, Shoppers Stop, Jet Airways in its kitty. Recharging of services require...

Indian Brands Cozy Up To Facebook For Air Time: Better Late Than Never?
2012-01-25 08:30:00
Indian Companies are catching up to their global brethren on Facebook , albeit in the form of promoted stories that appear in your timeline. These sponsored stories, though, have yet to be adopted widely in India since globally it is a grey area that is currently being frowned upon. However, companies who already have a Social Media presence are keenly interested to see who jumps the gun & promotes their brands & products on Facebook . Guess, being a copy-cat in the advertising world extends well beyond the traditional advertising media. Some of the early adopters like Jet Airways, have crossed the 30,000 Fans milestone on their Facebook page & are anxiously awaiting this added opportunity to further their brand as “Over 80 per cent of Jet Airways’ marketing spends are in the digital space and social media share is substantial,” revealed a company spokesperson. Incidentally, the airline is active on Twitter YouTube & others since 2010. However, merely g...

Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Goes Social!
2012-01-25 07:29:00
Social Media especially Twitter is a great tool for politicians to interact with their supporters and gain national outreach quite easily. We have seen the Obama Government make full use of it to reach out to people. Many politicians are now taking up Twitter to cast their thoughts, engage with lay people and speak their mind. We have also seen have Team Anna leveraged Twitter to reach out to supporters. This is a positive trend towards openness and transparency. The Swedish Government lets one of its citizens tweet as @sweden every week. We are not there yet but we are making good strides. It is being reported that Indian Prime Minister , Manmohan Singh’s Office has now registered itself on the popular micro-blogging site. The PMO’s twitter account will have regular updates on the Prime Minister’s programme in real time. Currently, there are only 4 tweets but their following has reached 11,000 people. The tweets are about Bravery Awards function that was held recently. Pankaj...

Fake Threats To Shutdown Facebook Emerge On The Internet
2012-01-25 05:14:00
Anonymous are known for DDOS attacks on government and organizational websites. They stand for the protection of anonymity and other online rights on the web. They attack those who they perceive as deniers of these rights. Anonymous is not an organization. Instead it is a loose collective with no leaders and hence cannot be tracked easily. They have recently taken down the US Department of justice website in retaliation for the closure of Megaupload.com by the FBI. Earlier, they hacked CBS and Universal Music’s websites. They have also attacked Indian Governmental websites. This sort of online activism in called ‘Hactivism’. So, today news started coming in when Mashable declared that Anonymous has threatened to shut Facebook down on January 28th as part of a global blackout to protest SOPA and PIPA. There is a video doing the rounds on the Internet which is supposedly the one that announced this blackout. The video tells us in trademark anonymous style that an online war ...

2012-01-24 11:28:00

This is apparently due to overcrowding and over-consumption of content which leading to health proble...

ApnaCricle Introduces BlackBerry App; Wooing The Executive Crowd?
2012-01-24 10:58:00
India’s answer to LinkedIn, ApnaCircle.com has  introduced a native App for the BlackBerry Smartphones. ApnaCircle.com seems to be in re-consolidating stage & has realized that one of the ways to grow its adoption is to offer applications that reside on the Phones, rather than making the users visit the website. The new app available in BlackBerry Appstore, features many other advantages besides convenience. Since BlackBerry OS allows multi-tasking, keeping the App in the Background will make you available 24×7. The application includes an address book, and allows users to read and reply to messages within itself. The App also leverages the power of PushMail, that the BlackBerry service is famous & sometime infamous for! However, the Push Notifications for the App are meant for instant updates on industry happenings and news. Users can also instantly view, accept or decline requests to connect from other users. Though on the decline, BlackBerry is still a formidabl...

Radiation Protection “Chip” Introduced In India. Will You Use I
2012-01-24 10:00:00
Syenergy Environics has announced a product in the form of a Chip, which the company claims to guard oneself from electronic radiation. Christened Enviro chip, the small Printed Circuit Board (PCB) chip when affixed on a “Specific Area”, will guard the humans & sensitive electronics against radiation which is supposedly harmful & is emitted constantly while the electronic device such as mobiles, WiFi Routers etc. are in use. So, how does this Chip work? Unlike the anti-radiation stickers commonly found on mobile phones, this chip is meant to work on Active hindrance techniques. When applied to the designated area, the chip operates between 500 to 600 THz which is much higher than the radiation emitted by theelectronic devices themselves. These random generated waves are supposed to hinder the emission & the company claims that the chip protects humans by making the emissions compatible with the body’s random waveforms. How exactly it happens is not yet cl...

RIM’s Co-CEO’s Are Out: Good News Or Otherwise?
2012-01-24 08:36:00
News has just come in that RIM’s founders and Co-CEO’s Mike Laziridis and Jim Balsillie have stepped down to make way for the company’s former COO, Thorsten Heins. RIM has had a particularly bad year in terms of all their devices. The Playbook failed at sales and adoption. The new Blackberry OS got delayed till later this year. They had worldwide outages some months back. All in all the future looks dim for the company. The Co-CEO’s have no doubt bungled up things this year and the company has been quite complacent about their products and market share. Since they were not adopting new technology, other companies and platforms have shot up and are actively eating Blackberry market share. Android and iOS are slowly replacing BB in the corporate world. The Blackberry range of smart phones were the ‘go-to’ phones for professionals due to their tight email delivery and encrypted enterprise servers. These days, every other smart phone platform have perfected e-mail and socia...

Yahoo To Start Inserting Ads To Its Media Content. Get Ready For Commercial
2012-01-24 07:59:00
Yahoo! will soon offer Marketing agencies an opportunity to insert their advertisements into Yahoo’s multimedia content. A while ago, Yahoo had made foray, albeit late into the world of online streaming of movies. Yahoo, at that time claimed it was doing so to offer original & professionally created content to its audiences. Now we know why it had intended to do so. At that time it even offered a web-exclusive release of Super-K an animation film. Yahoo had been planning this for quite some time. We had first reported Yahoo’s spreading of its wings in Sep 2011. Hence this should not come as surprise. Especially when Ad-spends in India, though are rising, the online display advertising business is a dismal 3.7 per cent of the total budget allocated for putting across products & brands. With gross under monetization of this lucrative, yet untapped field, Yahoo! has as its audience of about 30 Million Internet users who regularly consume online video content. In terms of c...

Snapdeal.com Is Now Mobile! Late To The Party?
2012-01-24 07:45:00
Snapdeal.com is one India’s fast growing e-commerce sites. This growth is reflected in the amount of media spends that the company is currently doing. You must have seen the ‘YamDude’ ads on television. They are going all out to acquire more traditional customers rather than netizens. The company has now launched its mobile site which will help their customers to get all the exciting deals on the go. It should be kept in mind that this is not an app but WAP portal. As we all know that apps rule the roost on mobile then why would Snapdeal launch a mobile site? The rationale might be the fact that smart phones are not that prevalent in the country as of now and hence a WAP site has more advantages than an app for their TG. The most important advantage of the mobile site is the fact that it can work on any Internet enabled phone and hence can target more people than a standalone app for platforms like Blackberry. Android and iOS could. Some of the salient features of this WAP p...

Cyber Crime Is Becoming A Threat In India. A Major Cause For Concern?
2012-01-24 06:51:00
India’s Internet users have shot up to 100 million and so has the risk of getting  attacked by Cyber crime. The world of Cyber crime is diverse and ranges from illegally accessing computers to phishing attacks with a lot of e-mail scams thrown in. Our burgeoning Internet population might be a good thing towards India’s growth towards becoming an Internet economy but this user-base is also a huge juicy target for online scammers, illegal hackers and hustlers. Cyber laws are lacking when it comes to online malpractices. Instead of focusing on immediate problems like Cyber Crime , our Government is fixated on trivialities like removing ‘objectionable content’. This is a big cause of concern to many here in the country and is counter-productive to the way the Internet works in India. For many years, Indians were not comfortable carrying out online transaction due to various fears. Now that they have warmed up to it, these malpractices may make them want to re-consider. These ar...

SC Saves Vodafone From $2.2 Billion IT Fine
2012-01-24 06:41:00
Vodafone finally has a reason to cheer. We had earlier reported on how they didn’t seem to be making much money on their venture into India. This was primarily due to high 3G costs and a messy legal tangle with the Indian Government. According to the Indian Income Tax Department, they owed them Rs. 11,000 Crores in Taxes. They claimed it was due to them for Vodafone’s takeover of Hutchison Essar. The case dragged on, with Vodafone denying they owed the amount to the IT department. The case moved up to the Supreme Court, who just passed their verdict in favour of Vodafone. According to the SC, Offshore deals are out of the Government’s Tax Jurisdiction. The Government was ordered to pay back the already collected Rs. 2500 Crore fine, along with 4% Interest. The decision was being closely followed by a lot of parties, as it will have a lot of implications.  It will boost the confidence of Foreign Investors with respect to investing in India, as they know they can...

Smaller Operators Lead Pack As 7.5M New GSM Subscriber In December
2012-01-23 11:58:00
India’s GSM Market has made analysts from around the world marvel at its growth. With Mobile Number Portability having been around for a year and 3G networks being available on most providers, consumers are spoilt for choice. The larger operators like Airtel and Vodafone still lead the pack in terms of market share, and the two combined make up nearly half of the entire GSM Market. Newly released statistics show that the largest growth spurt last month was not in the larger providers. In fact it was the smaller providers who showed the biggest growth.  Idea lead the way with a stunning 2.39 Million new subscribers in December 2011. Uninor too showed large growth numbers with 2.12 Million new subscribers added to their registers. Market leader Airtel came in 3rd place, with 960,000 new subscribers added. Europe Recession Helps Indian Tech Giants Grow: Good News For Us?
2012-01-23 11:30:00
The Europe an Economic crisis is proving to be a boon for Indian Tech Giants who are reporting robust growth. Until recently, Europe was very stingy when handing their work offshore. However, the growing concern of a meltdown has forced the companies to revaluate their strategies concerning cost reduction through outsourcing. In 2011, top-tier Indian Companies posted a growth between 23% to 40% from their Europe focused operations. In the last quarter alone, Infosys reported a jump of 17% while TCS garnered 17% more revenue. The good news does not end there. The scope of work to come too has shot up with European companies signing more multi-million dollar contracts than the US for the first time. European operations usually account for about 25% or 1/4th of Indian IT Companies total revenues. However, UK is the sole country which hands over the lions-share. Rest untapped markets involve Spain, Italy and the Nordic regions. But things improved in 2011 when Infosys added 14 new clien...

Google Could Score A Cool $ 5.8 Billion From Mobiles Alone. Time To Shift F
2012-01-23 09:55:00
Google’s Ad revenue from Mobiles alone could come close to US$ 6 Billion reveals a new research from Cowen. Jim Friedland, an analyst with Cowen speculates that Google generates about US$ 7 per Phone and Tablet per year through the search and display advertising last year. These advertisements are displayed in mobile apps on both Android and iOS (iPhones and iPads) & also alongside search results. These analyses coincide with CEO Google Larry Page’s announcement last Thursday that “Google’s mobile ad revenues program was standing at a $5 billion annualized run-rate”. Joining the dots, we can see that Google hopes doubling of revenue from last year’s US$ 2.5 Billion to this year’s 5.8 Billion Dollars. Well, last year, the estimated total number of smart phones was pegged at 509 Million. This year the figure is expected to almost double at a whopping 914 Million by end of 2012. Since Google’s Search is universal across all OSes, apart from it Android, the a...

Amazon Might Finally Make An Entry In India Via Their Marketplace
2012-01-23 08:24:00
We have been wondering for some time now about Amazon ’s plan for India . Seeing how two former Amazon executives have managed to build up Flipkart by doing what Amazon does best and adapting it to the Indian market, we were sure that Amazon would not keep quiet. For many months Amazon was very tight lipped about its entry into the country but now it seems they might actually start operations in the country very soon. For those excited about the fact that they will bring their flagship online store to the country, then you will be a bit disappointed. They are just setting up the Amazon Marketplace where 3rd party retailers can sell their stuff through Amazon’s channel.     Amazon Marketplace is thus getting into deals with many online retailers so that they only sell their wares through the ‘Community’ Marketplace. Amazon will reportedly not charge the retailers a commission on the stuff sold. Apparently, they have been studying the Indian business landscape and d...
