ScamVille, Facebook And The Poor Little Indian Farmer
2009-11-10 06:42:00
(By Prateek Waghmare) Over the last 10 days the internet is abuzz with stories of Scam Ads found in popular games from companies like Zynga (Farmville ring a bell?) For those that are unaware of how such games are monetized. Users are allowed to spend real world money to buy in game currency to level up and have a better gaming experience that someone who wouldn’t. This is where Plan B for pulling in those dollars comes in. A little bit of genius and some knavery is responsible for an estimated 1/3rd of Zynga’s revenue through what are known as ‘lead gen scams.’ How these ‘scams’ work is deceptively simple. Using one of the oldest tricks in the book, a lie of omission. A user takes a simple quiz which promises them in game currency. After completion however, the user is asked for a valid cellular phone number and a PIN (which is texted to the given number). What the user does not know is that he/she may have been slapped a 10$ per month recurring subscription to ...

2009-11-09 10:08:00
Rediff has registered a 43 % decline in Q2  revenues at $4.19 Millions compared to $ 7.32 Mn recorded in corresponding quarter last year. The company has also declared a net loss of $2.61 Mn against a loss of $ 0.42 Mn last year. Sequentially the revenues are down 16 per cent and profitability has worsened. Rediff reported revenues of $4.96 Mn. in june quarter along with net loss of $1.43 Mn. The operating expenses are up by a little margin but lower than the company prediction of $1-1.5 Mn increment for few quarter in a row. Rediff has seen a decline in revenues at a time when advertising spends are on rise and is seeing heavy allocation for Online media although it should still be noted that it went for a total revamp doing away with all homepage ads. The advertising revenues were down 21 per cent sequentially but witnessed a 10 % rise in U.S revenues. One must admit that they made a big move by removing ads from homepage but then why have popups? Which is worse...

The TEDIndia Experience – Ideas That Should Spread – Part &ndas
2009-11-09 06:19:00
By the 3rd day of TEDIndia I was convinced in my mind and my heart that I hadn’t experienced so many thoughts, ideas and emotions in such a short span of time ever before as the first and second day were fantastic. When I was invited to TEDIndia I had thought that I would just cover the Technology side of stuff that came up during the event but I soon realized that TEDIndia was not about a vertical, not about businesses or cultures or India alone but it was about life and its experiences. It was about the passion, perseverance and spirit of human kind and what it could achieve going forward. The last day at TED was one which started of with C.K.Prahalad sharing his thoughts on business and innovation. He stated that success is the first enemy of innovation as companies feel that they must be right and dont delve deeper to innovate or create something new. He also stated that size by no measure is a signal of a great company. He felt smaller companies could create the same prod...

The TEDIndia Experience – Ideas That Provoke – Part – 2
2009-11-09 05:26:00
We wrote about day 1 and TED and how it was a mixture of Hans Rosling’s brilliance with numbers and Pranav Mistry’s brilliance with technology. Day 2 was a different day though. I dont think anyone in the audience expected the day to be so intense but it surely was. Day 2 was kicked of by a session called Reinventing Development and there are three talks that I would like to point out. First one being that of Anil Gupta who runs the honey bee network which brings innovators from all parts of India together. He showcased 2 very interesting innovations among many. First one being a palm tree climbers created by a coconut seller and the second one was a bicycle with floaters which could be used both the road and on water. This was again created by a simple man who wanted to go across sea to meet a loved one. His talk was centered around how innovations aren’t limited to the west or to great scientists and how each and every simple person can also be innovative. My fav...

The TEDIndia Experience – Ideas That Transform – Part – I
2009-11-09 04:26:00
The last 3-4 days of mine have been spent in immersing myself into an experience called TED. As you may have noticed we had blogged about the fact that we would be at TED and shall be covering the same. So lots of people tweeted about TEDIndia and many blogged as well. The reason Ive waited till the event got over was because I didn’t want to blog about each talk individually but about TEDIndia as an event as a whole. In my last 3 years and more of blogging experience Ive attended over 50 events (atleast) and each of them have left me richer in knowledge or in insight. But none of them have ever moved me to tears or made me go in deep thought or made me proud to be Indian all in the matter of days. TED which stands of Technology, Entertainment and Design is far more than that. TEDIndia infact was more a reflection of what are the grave issues in India and the brilliance and the fallacy of India rather than being specific to Technology, Entertainment and Design. So here is my h...

Punishment For Cyber Crime – Life Imprisonment, Facebook Makes Millio
2009-10-30 13:12:00
At WATBlog, we’ve commented quite a few times on cyber crime and how the fast changing face of the Internet has a lost of scope for misuse. A while back, we covered the amendments made to the IT Act. While the post was focused on the changes and how it could affect the privacy of the individual, there are several positive impacts to the Act as well. The IT Act of 2000, was modified in December 2008 and has come into force on October 27. A lot of crimes now come under the ambit of the IT Act. Some of the offences are: Cyber Terrorism Wi-Fi Hacking Sending / Viewing child pornography Video Voyeurism Identity Theft Spam. The original act was vague, and had only one criminal section – Section 66 for cyber crime. Now, it possesses a commendable expanse of powers for specific acts. Section 66F for example is applicable in case of Cyber Terrorism. If Wi-Fi or Internet is used to send terror mail, offenders can be effectively punished for life. (Life sentence). Similarly, any...

One of the most prominent social networking sites in the world, Twitter once started blending two discrete forms of entities to create added value to their users. Aggregating Twitter and politics, they formed Politweets which played a vital role in the US Elections 2008 which further turned out to be a healthy revenue model and not just a mashup. They termed this move as something ‘Of The People, By The People, For The People‘! Hence, they introduced a new way of letting people take part in democracy by engaging in an instinctive motive of keeping them updated of what is happening with the people, organizations, and events they care about. What’s in the News? Ballsmedia, a marketing consultancy has recently launched their first step to revolutionize the social media arena. Their slogan includes survival of a healthy community is difficult sans a business, and a business cannot survive sans a healthy community. They opted fashion to become their mainstream marketi...

2009-10-30 04:58:00
We had reported that Orkut was to ape twitter’s status updates feature and so it has with the launch of the new orkut. Orkut sent me a mailer with an invite to check out the new orkut. They have setup an orkut group for all those folks who want to try out the new orkut here. There is also an animated video describing whats new in the new orkut (Caution: I found the video rather irritating!) So whats ‘NEW’ with Orkut? 1) “What are you upto?” feature? As many of you would know orkut never had a status update feature. It always had a USP in scraps which turned into spam posts with malicious links pretty soon. While facebook and twitter have had status updates as the key feature which has worked well for both of them. This move by orkut can be called ‘playing catch up’ to the growing trend of status updates. Click screenshot of status updates below: 2) Friend Suggestion Feature The friend suggestion feature was another winner at facebook in co...

2009-10-29 14:08:00
BigFlix the dvd rentals and video on demand site from the Reliance Entertainment stable has struck a deal with International video site Hulu.com to bring Bollywood movies to Hulu. Internationally Hulu offers hit TV shows, movies and clips at Hulu.com but most of the content is US centric but this wont be the first time Hulu has looked to tie up with a bollywood centric content provider. Even earlier hulu tied up with Saavn and at that time the deal included 5 titles. We dont have information on whether that deal is over but from the looks of it we can say that Bigflix seems to be the new partner for Hulu when it comes to bollywood content. This tie up will be a good way for Bigflix to reach out to the international market targeting the South Asian population and non-NRIs. Given its video on demand service this audience is the prime target audience who actually pays for video on demand. This association will start by offering 12 Bollywood movies which will have English subtitles so...

Now-a-days the in style argument about newspapers shutting down due to the entrance of another useful medium seems to be catching fire with news flickering from different corners of the world. But I think there’s nothing that online media has to do with the newspapers when it comes to psychological satisfaction of reciting a physical source of information. Secondly, one medium cannot suppress another, so the contention is totally hypothetical. I personally don’t think I’ll ever stop reading a newspaper. Agreed that e-newspapers are very helpful to read an article for the second time at your workplace when you’re not carrying your paper, but this wouldn’t conflict someone’s personal choice. Momma always questions me of what I read in a newspapers after watching the TV news before going to bed, and to be honest I never have the answer. Well, as King Odysseus once said that women have ways of complicating things, I wouldn’t disagree without bei...

The Chrome OS Beta is a Fake, Don’t Download
2009-10-28 17:54:00
If you read this like right now and head to Twitter and search for “Chrome OS”, you’ll find over a 100 tweets getting updated by the second that Google has released a Beta Version of its Chrome OS. The link that you see on the image leads to a Google Sites page. The which has just four pages immediately seems like a shady part of the web for Chrome OS to be made available. The Download page says this: Chrome OS is at the beta stage. You can download the free virtual appliance of Chrome OS here: And gives links to a couple of torrent files with other file details like the size. What’s easy to miss though is a tiny bit of line which says: Chrome OS is not related to Google. Service provided by SUSE Studio. See the license. So there you go, despite what people might be tweeting, Chrome OS is not out. And what you have instead is a Linux software made out of Suse. So don’t download it. Unless of course you want to have some fun like the guys at Dow...

With that, everything seems to be getting wheels online with the penetration of the internet increasing each day in different corners of the country. On the other hand flashing in the news we have Gaadi.com ranking second in the Auto Portal category according to the traffic measurement tool ComScore. Google Wants To Be Your 3G/Wimax Provider
2009-10-28 05:21:00
While 3G/Wimax might have been delayed for the nth time the interest its generating from all parts of the world for India is something else.
