2012-01-16 12:34:00
Eleven years ago, in 2001, Wikipedia dot org was born. Part of the Wikimedia Foundation, it is a student’s gift from heaven, a researcher’s delight and a professor’s nightmare. Wikipedia aims to collect all the information known to mankind under one (virtual) roof, and they have done an admirable job of trying to do so. With tens of thousands of regular editors and contributors across the globe, they are the go-to website for pretty much anyone searching for information. War Of Search Giants: Bing Beats Yahoo To Snag Second Place
2012-01-16 11:03:00
In the war of search engines comScore has revealed that Microsoft’s Bing has just surpassed Yahoo ! Search . Bing & other MS sites fielded 2.75 Billion search requests as against Yahoo’s 2.65 Billion. In terms of US market’s share it was 15.1 % against 14.5% respectively. However, these two are nowhere near even when clubbed together against Google’s 12 Billion search requests or a whopping 66%. We tried to analyze the reasons for this upsurge: Yahoo has signed a 10 Year deal with Microsoft. With this deal Yahoo has tried to save money by relying on Microsoft to provide the bulk of its search technology. Microsoft actually gained from this deal by getting more requests to process and analyze over time. What this meant was Microsoft got ample opportunity to understand search preferences & trends. The Bing program has been bleeding money to the tune of US$ 7 Billion. This news could offer some solace to the company that heavily relies on Windows Operating Software &...

Speech-Driven Web Service For Indian Farmers Launched By Indian Govt
2012-01-16 07:50:00
In a radical move aimed at farmers, the Indian Government will soon launch Speech-driven web service to address weather & farming related queries. Tech giant IBM, has been roped in by the Govt. to develop & deploy this first-of-its-kind interactive technology for farmers. In 2009 an SMS & IVR based system was launched to initially serve 5000 farmers & now currently caters to @ 2.8 Million. The SMSs are in regional languages, IVR provides verbal updates. However, these services are limited to just that, updates. The unique queries raised by farmers cannot be answered. Still, the ministry has records that show the short and timely alerts to farmers about the weather have led to economic benefits worth a whopping Rs.50,000 Crores annually! This could rise to 211,000 Crores if the entire farming community adopts the system judiciously. The project christened AgroMet (Agriculture Meteorological) service for farmers is a delayed-response model. That means, the questions a...

2012-01-16 07:48:00

Let us look at the latest Google video that is doing the rounds of the Interwebs. Titled ‘Tanjore’, it clearly explains in a nutshell what Google wants of SME’s. The ‘India get your Business online’ initiative is a tie-up between Google India and Hostgator. Nikhil Rungta, Country marketing Head for Google India has said that this initiative is aimed towards SME’s in metros as well as the countryside. Mobile Ad Network Vserv Eyes Emerging Markets. To Open Operations In Singap
2012-01-13 09:30:00
Mumbai-based mobile ad network Vserv is planning to setup office in Singapore by February end. Adserv offers AdWrapper which comes in handy to insert advertisements into a developer’s mobile application. We had recently witnessed something similar for videos.  The platform is vital even for low end phones connected merely through GPRS  / EDGE & not the flailing 3G. The strength of Vserv’s AdWrapper lies in implementing ads without changing source code. Even more, the application offers free Ad mediation & House Ads along with exhaustive App analytics. Thus the business analysis is also taken care of automatically. No need to go to a third party. Presently, the company is active in the J2ME or java apps sphere. We think, this strategic growth could also fuel expansion in other platforms that are doing well. Why the urge for an Ad-Network agency to open a Brick and Mortar office? While Adserv may be doing quite well, the results of business development have been pas...

SMS Marketing Firms Swear To Abide By Rules. End Of Pesky Messages?
2012-01-13 09:00:00
SMS aggregators and marketers have signed a Code of Conduct under the aegis of Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) to refrain from harassing mobile subscribers who have opted for “Do Not Disturb”. The Code of Conduct designed by IAMAI in association with seven of the largest firms like ACL-wireless; Air2web, Netcore, Pinnacle Teleservices; SMS Gupshup; Unicel technologies; ValueFirst  puts a self imposed ban on these companies to use the overseas origination route for SMS marketing . A while ago, despite a ban by TRAI, some telemarketing companies continued to send SMSes to users registered under NCPR earlier known as Do Not Disturb list. Upon investigation it was learnt that these SMSes originated from overseas destinations where our regulations do not apply. IAMAI President Subho Ray has urged the 2800 odd registered telemarketing companies and a couple of telcos who actively promote these services to urgently adopt and abide by this Code of Conduct & go...

Is The Rate Of Increase Of Internet Penetration Proving To Be A Bane In Ind
2012-01-13 06:11:00
Internet is here to stay in India. Yet the highly diverse Indian society presents a challenge to internet which is unique to the country. No other country has a set of dynamics and variables similar to India and so web based businesses and services do not really have a point of reference to deal with them. Internet penetration is rapidly increasing in the country and the potential is such that no web based enterprise can ignore this market either. So what do they do? In December 2011 two separate cases have been filed against big-name internet entities, which accuse them of providing a platform to spread obscene, anti-religious and anti-social content. The sites were ordered to remove the above mentioned content and to ensure that similar content is not published henceforth. The list sites which were at the receiving end include Facebook, Google and Orkut. The directive of the Delhi civil court in this matter echoes the sentiments earlier expressed by Kapil Sibal, the minister of c...

Facebook Ad’s Are No Longer ‘Sponsored’, Now ‘Featu
2012-01-12 11:37:00
What do you do when you have, in your hands, the biggest brand of the last decade? You learn how to make money off it, of course. Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook  can safely be called the largest Social Network of today. Literally everyone is using or has at one point used a Facebook account. Facebook for Brands has been a runaway success. People now rely on the brand’s Facebook Page for information, news and offers. Until now, Facebook has been showing Ad’s on the right hand side of the News Feed. Brands pay to get their Ad shown to a certain target group. With the latest development, the Ad’s leave the side bar and enter your Newsfeed. This may seem as an intrusion to some, as you will see advertisements between stories of your friends and family. Facebook had tried this from 2006-2009 but stopped it after user complaints.  This time around, they promise it is different. Said a Facebook Ad Executive, “We’ll be labeling these stories as ”Featured”...

A Brand Name Could Be A Domain Extension Too. End Of Cybersquatting?
2012-01-12 07:32:00
ICANN has just opened its pearly gates for companies to register their brand names as domain extensions. The new names will come online in 2013, but application procedure has already started. It was a common perception that .COM was the most desired extension. However, with ICANN proposing new extension options, companies soon could even customize this end of the website. ICANN, the internet governing body, approved significant expansions to Top-Level Domain s (gTLDs) to allow companies, organizations and even cities to turn their own brands into domain name extensions. Though brand names like TATA, Reliance, Birla may surely appeal for such exclusivity, we expect to see heavy game-play or bidding in the generic product range like .music, .shop, .food etc. But the with the fight now moving to a more generic aft field, there could be plenty to go around. A while ago, India had opposed the idea of a generic .XXX extension, lets see, how it responds to this. The 90 Day registration pro...

High Court Seeks Delhi Police Reply On Plea By Facebook & Google: Needl
2012-01-12 07:07:00
Last month saw much drama over the fact that Kapil Sibal, our venerable Minister for Human Resources and Development, effectively wanted to censor the Internet and Social Media due to the risk of people viewing ‘objectionable’ content. He recanted later saying that he did not want to do all that but wanted companies like Facebook and Google to regulate the process whereby objectionable content be removed via pre-screening. After facing many threats, abuses and critical comments Sibal has seemingly backed out for now. But some people are still giving into this flawed logic and submitting criminal complaints in a court. The Delhi High Court has sought a reply from the Delhi Police regarding the petitions filed by Facebook India, Google India and many other social networks challenging the criminal trial court order which makes them liable for ‘objectionable’ content that is available on their sites. On December 23, the trial court had called upon 21 representatives from promine...
Special Feature: Google+ Brand Pages Need To Be Approached Differently In O
2012-01-12 06:46:00
Social media has become an extremely important medium for brands. All brands, tiny, small or big, invested a considerable amount of time and resource on perfecting their social media presence. In the past few years Twitter and Facebook have become the front runners. Having a customized Facebook page is now almost a prerequisite. Then in June 2011 Google + entered the social media space and experts predicted that this will be the start of the decline of Facebook. But nothing of that sort happened. Facebook has steadily been growing and brands are still very much on the Facebook bandwagon. Google+ is also growing, in terms of number of users, but are they active? On 7th November 2011, Google+ launched their version of brand pages. This move was inevitable. Google’s official blog stated that Google+ wants “to make sure you can build relationships with all the things you care about—from local businesses to global brands—so today we’re rolling out Google+ Pages worldwide.” At...

TimesJobs Optimizes Website: Job-search Got Even Simpler?
2012-01-12 06:00:00
TimesJobs a Times Group initiative has just re-launched their portal in a revamped design. We visited the site for a quick review & were pleasantly surprised with the efforts. The new design has surely been built with one thing in mind. Simplicity. As compared to the earlier version, the new avatar of the site offers navigation through tabbed browsing which is a very common feature in the popular browsers. Amit Jain, VP, TimesJobs is optimistic as he says, “A host of features give job-seekers a clutter free home page experience with intuitive navigation and faster downloads. We hope these improvements encourage job-seekers to fine tune their resumes, enhance their job-search and apply to corporate that are in high demand” A new “floating” tab akin to a scrolling advertisement is anything but. According to the site designers, the tab should offer critical navigation options that offer ease of job search to both logged-in and unregistered users. While logged-in ...

Google Introduces New Personalized Search: Bakes Google+ Into It
2012-01-11 13:28:00
Google has just updated their search algorithm to serve you some special personalized results. This will pull in Google+ data directly into your search results and the company claims that it will help in making search more personal and rewarding. Google had paved the way to this by introducing ‘Social Search ’ some months back. Personalizing search with results pulled in from a social network is not new as Bing and Facebook are also doing the same thing. How does this service differ from them then? Google’s personal search upgrade makes it possible for you first search through your own stuff that you have shared on Google+ since people share a lot of their data and stuff on the Internet today. It can thus be used to look up something you might have posted some months ago but are hard put find now. The second advantage is the fact that you can also look at what your friends have shared in context to the search term you enter. Suppose you need to use a photo or a link. ...

Make & Track Complaints To Your Telecom Provider Soon
2012-01-10 12:55:00
The Telecom Regulation Authority of India (TRAI) has been on the offensive in the past year or so, in an effort to ensure a better customer experience for the Indian Public. After cracking down on unsolicited calls with the DND Facility, they tackled the issue of spam SMSes with their restrictions on Unlimited SMS Plans. Now, they have made an effort to fix another major problem faced by customers: Complaint Management. Here is a link to the original TRAI Directive. All of us have been faced with an unknown deduction, a bill payment not recognized or an SMS Plan not activated. When the regular customer care is unable to help us, we are forced to file complaints. These complaints are usually filed away and very hard to keep track off. The TRAI has come out with a new directive that states, “Every  service provider shall, within  forty-five days of coming into  force of these regulations, establish a ‘Web Based Complaint Monitoring System’ to enable the consumers to...

Vodafone Wants to Triple Data Services Revenue
2012-01-10 11:11:00
Vodafone Group Plc hopes to triple the revenue share of its data services in its India operations over the next two years. Vodafone hopes to achieve this growth riding on increase in the use of smart-phones for accessing Internet as well as downloading music. Currently data services contribute 3% to Vodafone’s topline. This will go up to 10% in two years’ time, hopes Samaresh Parida, Mumbai-based director of strategy at Vodafone India Ltd. Banking and applications to increase farmers’ productivity are two other things which will contribute to this growth. “Right now the growth of data is pretty phenomenal, but it’s from a very small base so we’ll be pushing the throttle on growing the business in data as fast as possible,” Parida said. Telecom operators are facing a stiff challenge as Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) is on the decline. Though there is a record growth in subcriber numbers, it has not resulted in revenue growth.
