Team India Banned From Using Twitter On Australia Tour
2012-01-09 12:51:00
Virat Kohli shocked the cricketing world when he let loose the finger to the Sydney crowd during a match against Australia . As India were on a losing streak and Virat was very upset with the comments that the Sydney crowd made during the match. His crude gesture resulted in increased Tweets and Facebook shares. I am sure that shortly this pic will be a meme. Now we hear that the Indian management Down Under has banned the use of Twitter or any other social media channel for the Indian players after Virat Kohli took to Twitter to justify his actions to his followers. We all know that the relations between India and Australia as countries have never been very great due to all the student violence that had occurred in Australia some years ago. Sometimes, no one knows from which angle the resentment comes but we can surely say that the Australian crowd wasn’t acting very welcoming either. Virat tweeted that, “I agree cricketers don’t have to retaliate. What when the crowd say...

Facebook Gets Attacked By Ramnit: More Than 45000 Accounts Compromised
2012-01-09 10:32:00
Facebook has always been at the centre of never ending privacy and safety accusations. Just recently, Founder Mark Zuckerburg’s private photos were leaked online due to a glitch. There are many more privacy issues that Facebook has grappled with but the accounts that are hacked by worms/malware are potentially the most dangerous. Security company Seculert has declared that the worm called Ramnit has accessed and compromised more than 45000 Facebook accounts by stealing their login credentials. The worm propagates through ‘Windows’ OS. The agency suspects that the attackers were manually logging onto these compromised accounts and posting malicious/infected links to other facebook users. Once clicked, the worm downloads itself on your Windows machines and infects Windows executables (.exe files), HTML files and the Microsoft Office Suite (including Outlook). This worm thus can propagate itself fast across many machines around the world. Ramnit was an old worm which has been ...

2012-01-09 06:57:00
The patent wars are heating up in every major software company around the world. A lot of companies are treading this path carefully. The only thing that makes sense is to hoard up as many patents as you can to fortify yourself against patent lawsuits and trolls. That is exactly what Google has done. They recently acquired 200 more patents from IBM which cover a wide spectrum of web services like email, server backups, database optimization, ad serving and mobile web page display. Google has gotten many patents earlier from IBM last year. There is one more important patent which deals with social networking and Google plans to use it to boost Google+. They acquired more than 2000 patents during the period from June to December last year. Google is all set to buy Motorola Mobility to boost Android and its manufacturers and keep them safe from Microsoft’s and Apple’s patent litigation, pending an Anti-trust review. Joy To The World: Internet Explorer 6 Is Dead!
2012-01-06 12:55:00
If you ask any web developer or website designer, what is the worst problem faced by them, 9 out of 10 will tell you; incompatible browsers. More specifically, people who are stuck on old, deprecated versions of Internet Browsers. Internet Explorer 6 was the default browser bundled with all Windows PC’s and laptops since way back in 2001. This means hundreds of millions of people used IE6 by default. As Opera, Chrome, Safari and Firefox released more advanced and easy to use browsers, there still remained millions of people stuck on IE6, simply because they did not know how to or did not want to switch to an upgraded browser. Microsoft released IE7, IE8 and now IE9, but there still existed computers running the old IE6. Now, finally, after a concerted effort by Microsoft, they can finally announce that the dreaded IE6 is dead. In March 2011, Microsoft launched the site IE6CountDown.com, in an effort to raise awareness of upgrading one’s browser. Here is what the websit...

TRAI Mandates TelCos To Address All Mobile Users: Will It Help?
2012-01-06 12:39:00
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) today announced a new twist to the Customer norms. It has mandated setting up a Toll-Free Number to address queries of mobile users irrespective of their service provider. In a move that will have a huge impact on how customers are dealt with by the service providers TRAI has also issued directives to setup a unified Customer complaint Center. Since tracking has never been a reality in mobile related complaints, TRAI has also asked Telcos to set up a web-based complaint monitoring system. Further, the service providers will also have to publish bulletins that will contain time frames specified by the authority for various complaints and various procedures related to services like Mobile Number portability (MNP), amount to be deducted, consumer’s rights etc. So how does it work? Presently there are three back-end steps to registering & addressing a complaint. The call center is first, which merely accepts the compliant. Thereaft...
Prediction For 2012: The Year Of Mobile Computing
2012-01-06 12:05:00
Since last year, we have witnessed a great deal of interest in Internet & related applications. However, this interest is fueled by consumption of on-the-move technology. We feel, the coming year will witness a heavy growth of mobile computing. It has already begun very well. Despite poor hardware, Aakash sales have skyrocketed. With the aim of providing computers i.e. one-laptop-per-child, now moving to tablet wars, expect a massive surge in Tablet sale. Blackberry proved once again that Indians are a price-sensitive bunch by completely exhausting the Playbook stock once the price was halved. With 3G catching on, albeit slowly, & 4G just around the corner, high speed internet will be now readily available. Since, even trains & highways are now connected; we can expect people to work extensively even while traveling. People are now able to watch full length movies & download legal music on their phones & tablets. Hence even entertainment is gaining mobility. Wit...

Creating Games Based On Movies Is The Current Flavor Of The Season In Bolly
2012-01-06 09:54:00
2011 was not the first year that digital games were developed based on Bollywood movies. It has been done earlier as well, but sporadically. In the past year we saw quite a few big name films launch games (PC, mobile and console games) to further the brand and also as a marketing ploy. Salman Khan’s film Bodyguard was the biggest grosser of 2011, raking in more than Rs. 100 crores. A mobile game based on the film is also on top of the download list on Djuzz, which is a games download portal part of Buzzcity. The game had been downloaded more than 30,000 times in just over a month, by the end of December 2011. The game was developed by Jump Games , which is owned by Reliance Entertainment and it was launched on multiple platforms including Java, Android and Blackberry. The game was priced at Rs. 50. Another film which had a successful game avatar was Delhi Belly, the dark comedy starring Imran Khan. The game was released in July 2011 and more than six months after its release the g...

BigFlicks launches BigFlix Plus. Is It India’s Answer To NetFlix?
2012-01-06 09:49:00
There is a dearth of services offering on-demand online movies and videos in India . Services like Hulu and NetFlix only work in the US. Music discovery and listening services like Spotify are also limited to certain countries. It is about time that someone in our country introduced the same. In what might be called a start, Reliance Entertainment Digital launched their on-demand online video rental service called BigtFlix Plus yesterday. It is supposed to be their answer to these international services.BIgFlix plus is part of their BigFlicks venture which has been around for sometime now. This service is the first of its kind in our country. The service allows you to access more than 500 movies on diverse platforms like PC’s, tablets, smartphones etc. The subscription fee is Rs. 249 per month which seems to be very reasonable. With time, the service is expected to have more movies and videos. BigFlix will allow the user to stream and download full length movies in High Definition ...

Special Feature: India Gets Its Second Low-Cost Tablet, Ubislate7. Does It
2012-01-06 07:18:00
When the India n government first announced that soon Indian school children and subsequently the general public will be able to get their hands on a $35 tablet PC, I doubt most thought it was either a practical joke or another scam in the making. For once the government actually stuck to its word (albeit quite a few months late and a few dollars dearer). Aakash, now a $50 or Rs. 2500 tablet got pre-booked within a few days of being made available online. Datawind, the company that manufactured both Aakash and Ubislate7, has revealed that nearly 14 lakh Aakash tablets were pre-booked. In the meantime they have announced online pre-booking for the Ubislate7, an upgraded version of Aakash. Hopefully, next month both Aakash and Ubislates will be delivered to the consumers. There are quite a few changes in Ubislate7 vis-à-vis Aakash. Let’s first take a look at those. Aakash works on the Android 2.2 (Froyo) platform, whereas Ubislate works on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). 2012-01-05 12:15:00
Internet and Mobile Association of India [IAMAI] which is instrumental in offering insights about Indian’s obsession with Mobile & Internethas just revealed the theme for their upcoming  India Digital Summit. Familiarity is more important, penetration will be a logical outcome feels Dr. Parthasarathi Shome – Director & CEO, Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), “Broadband aided education must be introduced as an integral part of course curriculum.” India can easily have broadband in 40% or 100 Million households provided the services are cheap. Presently, a decent speed broadband connection costs upwards of INR 1000 per month. If that is brought down to INR 200, India’s dream of making 300 Million households broadband equipped will become a reality sooner than later. The theme of this year’s summit is “Preparing for 300 million users”. The summit is a two day event held annually. This year it will be held at The ...

Google Buys Itself Late Christmas Present: 200 Patents From IBM
2012-01-05 12:03:00
The year 2011 saw many legal tussles in the Electronics industry. Most of them were between Apple on one side and Google and its hardware partners for Android devices on the other. Samsung and Apple are in the middle of a long and painful legal battle in courtrooms across the world. Microsoft too sues manufacturers now and then to make them pay for patents. Google is going through a legal battle with Oracle over their Android Operating System. All of these have one thing in common: Intellectual Property aka Patents . The Patent System was meant to foster innovation while safeguarding intellectual property rights. But it is being used by certain companies to cripple innovation and fill their own coffers. Google has suffered setbacks due to their relatively small set of patents in the past. Hence they began building up. In their multi-billion dollar acquisition of Motorola, one of their major reasons was Motorola’s vast Patent collection. In June 2011, they had bought 1000 pat...

Special Feature: Twitter Cracks The Whip On Third Party Clients
2012-01-05 11:34:00
Twitter is a unique service. It gave us the term ‘Micro-blogging’ and the 140 character limit was a genius move. People describe it as the ‘crack cocaine’ of the Internet. The service created the highest social media buzz last year. Twitter was founded back in 2007 but what plans does it have for the future. In terms of third party app support, the future looks bleak. According to Twitter’s platform chief, Ryan Sarver finally made it clear that they do not like ‘pure-play’ twitter clients and advised everyone to stop developing these clients. Twitter is unique in its nature of having thrown open its API for almost anyone to use in the past. A lot of third party Twitter apps like Tweetdeck, Seesmic, Twidroyd, Echofon and UberTwitter (now UberSocial) have mushroomed over the years which add their own unique UI elements as well functionality to the Twitter experience. Let’s define ‘Pure-Play’ here as it is very important in this context. A third party app that m...

Way2Online Buys Out Rival 160by2
2012-01-04 07:27:00
Hyderabad based Way2Online has recently bought over rival Web-to-SMS service 160by2. The acquisition gives Way2Online 100% ownership of 160by2. The money that Way2Online shelled out for the buyout has not been made public but apparently it was all-in-cash deal. The company runs the popular P2P messaging portal Way2SMS.com. This acquisition has increased the user-base of Way2Online to 33 million users and hence have 95% share of the nation’s P2P SMS vertical market share. Quite a huge chunk of people! According to Alexa.com, which lists the most visited sites on the web, 160by2 is one of the Top-100 most visited websites in India successively in 2010 and 2011. According to Google Zeitgeist, Way2SMS is listed as one of the Top 10 search words of 2011. Both the services are practically the same and are built upon more or less the same technology so this buyout was more of a ‘increasing userbase’ kinda move than anything else. With the TRAI putting a clamp on bulk SMS operations...
3G Roaming Fiasco Continues; DoT Files With TDSAT
2012-01-03 13:26:00
When the stakes are high, there is bound to be competition. The 3G Spectrum sold for thousands of crores of Rupees in India, with operators betting on it turning around their fortunes in the competitive yet low-profit Telecom Market of India.  As you probably know, service providers Airtel, Idea and Vodafone entered into Roaming agreements by themselves. This was vehemently opposed by the Government who asked them to stop. This was seen as a breach of contract by Telecom Heads, who alleged that they were lead to believe this would be allowable at the time of buying the spectrum. Now it was the Government in the form of the Dept. of Telecom (DoT) who are on the offensive. They have attacked the Telecom Companies, alleging that the companies  ’suppressed material documents’ in front of the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT), and ‘did not come with clean hands’ on the 3G roaming issue. The DoT filed an affidavit with the TDSAT, reque...

Digital Music Will Be Big In India This Year
2012-01-03 13:24:00
Every year we have one hit song that takes the nation by storm and last year was no different. We had that hit song but something was different. The song went viral through online channels with zero marketing on the artist’s part. Yes, we are talking about ‘Kolaveri Di’. The video was seeded on Youtube and many other popular social networking channels and it went viral like nobody’s business. Such was its reach that I heard it being played by a rickshaw driver who probably didn’t even have access to the Internet. This is how the Internet and Digital music are growing in India . Kolaveri Di now has around 30,594,976 views on Youtube as of now. It is the most popular song on Airtel’s 2011 top seller charts and was downloaded 210,000 times within 18 days of its launch. In addition, in a survey of 170 million Airtel customers, it was seen that they had completed around 150 million downloads. Not bad at all. This is only Airtel we are talking about. Imagine how many people d...

IIT Delhi student Rohit Pande’s Classteacher Learning Systems will bring out a new user-friendly & classroom suitable tablet to the market on January 1. Christened Classpad, the tablet will be available across multiple screen sizes like 7, 8 & 10 inches. The superiority to Aakash doesn’t end here. The screen is touted to be a capacitive one supporting multi-touch as against resistive type found on Aakash. While Aakash runs on 300 odd MHz processor, Classpad will have a mainstream 1 –1.3 GHz processor powering the Honeycomb 2.3 Android OS. Battery life too, is phenomenal in comparison touted at 7 hours against Aakash’s mere 1.5 hours! The only drawback about Classpad is the price point. With all these improvements the basic model starts at Rs. 7,500 & goes right up to 14,500 a price point matched by Playbook to woo customers this holiday season. With just WiFi to connect to the internet, Classpad is presently limited in connectivity options. But, Pande is talking...
