Guruji.com Introduces Ringtone Search – We Spoke To Anurag Dod, CEO &
2009-09-17 07:48:00
Guruji.com has been launching search verticals since quite sometime now. So they have ventured into finance, music, movie tickets earlier and now its the time for ringtones. Given the huge number of mobile penetration in India this might be a really good service. Guruji also has a search algorithm which they claim can comprehend the user intent; handle attached or detached versions of a word; understand phonetic variations as well as capture more advanced variations of a word which are not captured through the phonetic approach. Also as Guruji.com is available on mobile as well this search can be done right from your mobile phone and the ringtone can be downloaded directly to the phone. We spoke to Anurag Dod, CEO of Guruji.com to know more about Guruji’s plans: Q.1) Guruji has been in the news for its music aggregator. Can you share this story with us? First and only music search engine in India where users can listen to music, search for MP3 music and ringtones. Users can ...

5 Amazing Twitter Bots For Gtalk Fans!
2009-09-17 06:33:00
I have been a huge fan of the IM world. It has sped up and simplified our way of communication in such a way that even the long distance between Kolkata and California seems so small. Personally I have been a  big addict of the legendary Google Chat. You can do lot of interesting stuff with Google Talk like Chat with friends and colleagues, get alert notifications, save bookmarks to Delicious, manage web calendars, set reminders, write blogs, and so on. Such features can be easily integrated into Google Talk through ‘bots’ which, in simple English, are like virtual friends who are online 24×7 and will always respond with a smile to your questions or requests. The bots work on platforms like Jabber and are coded to generate automatic response to any user query. After WATBlog reviewed 5 best Twitter clients, I thought of compiling a list of 5 best Twitter bots for Google Talk enthusiasts. (P.S.: These will work only for Gtalk ) According to ease of use and features available I h...

Government To Block Internet Telephony Citing Security Concerns
2009-09-17 05:43:00
Cheap international calls over VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)  may soon be a thing of the past for Indians as the Intelligence Bureau has asked, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), to block all Internet telephony until security systems to trace the same are in place. Readers might recall that during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, this mode of communication was used. The intelligence department is of the opinion that India does not have the structure in place to track international as well as local calls. Since in the absence of CLI (Caller line identification) parameters of calls landing from abroad, It is not possible to identify the country of origin. Some facts about Net telephony in India. Indian consumers have used over 130 million minutes of Internet telephony in the January-March quarter 2009. Companies which offer net telephony in India are Telco’s such as MTNL in Delhi and Mumbai and many leading ISPs. In addition, any consumer with internet access can ...

Google Acquires reCaptcha – And It’s Not Just to Fight Spam
2009-09-16 19:09:00
Talk about acquisitions that don’t make much sense in the beginning but eventually pan out just fine, they usually end up sounding like a modern day fairy tale to me. Thankfully I snap out in time out of my fantasy ride and relay the news that Google has added another one to its kitty of acquisitions. Google just announced that it has acquired Spam protection tool Re-Captcha. We tried to make it hard for computers to recognize because we wanted to give humans the scoop first, but we’re happy to announce to everybody now that Google has acquired reCAPTCHA, a company that provides CAPTCHAs to help protect more than 100,000 websites from spam and fraud. says their blog post penned (or typed perhaps) by Luis von Ahn, co-founder of reCAPTCHA, and Will Cathcart, Google Product Manager. reCaptcha for those who don’t know is the same service that makes you type funny sets of words while commenting or using services of many sites, say adding friends through an unverified ...

RCom Inching Closer To Seal M-commerce Deal With Atom
2009-09-16 14:27:00
M-Commerce has been the buzzword off-late. The Mobi-payment companies are bringing innovations in facilitating m-commerce in India.  Business Standard reports that Reliance Communication may be inching closer towards finalizing m-commerce deal with Atom technologies, a group company of Financial Technologies. The deal seems significant for RCom as BS also reports citing company sources that the telco may very well be looking at earning revenues of Rs.800 crores in the next 3 years. The future course of plans by RCom is to provide inter-operable payment platform to facilitate various sorts of transaction on all its telecom services i.e. including GSM & CDMA. Atom Technologies currently is in forefront for mobi-payment services revolution in India. For Telecom companies like RCom it makes sense to go for such tie-ups as enabling m-commerce on its plethora of services would help it to leverage its core strength. Atom will offer RCom multiple banks (Indian and foreign...

Bing’s Visual Search – Now Search Information Graphically!
2009-09-16 14:19:00
Do you ever feel if the fight between Proprietary software or Freeware will ever end? I guess not. Similar is the case between Google and Microsoft’s Bing . Bing has been introducing various new features to lure the web searchers towards them from time to time and Visual Search is no different. Now, the search engines would no longer be providing just the textual information, you are looking for but are more enticed to searching information graphically and Bing’s new Visual Search can take searching to a very new level. Looks like the fight between Google and Microsoft is helping the consumers. What is Visual Search? As the Bing’s blogs mentions “Visual Search is a new way to formulate and refine your search queries through imagery, particularly for sets of results that tend to be more structured. It allows you to quickly scroll through the galleries or do a one-click refinement using the quick tabs on the left, which are specifically relevant to the type of ...

Arunjaitley.com Is Lawfully Mine, Claims Arun Jaitley
2009-09-16 14:06:00
Arun Jaitley might not be as hot a celebrity like Yuvi or Ash, but the BJP minister still has 61 pages of information about him on Google (only 61?). That apparently makes his name a ‘commodity’ hot enough on the domain name market and the legal counsel of Mr. Arun Jaitley has now moved the Delhi High Court requesting an intervention in an ongoing domain sale of www.arunjaitley.com that is currently on by an American domain auctioning company. Here is the story so far: Network Solutions, a USA based web hosting company had owned the domain name www.arunjaitley.com. Learning this, Mr. Jaitley had apparently approached the website for the ownership of the domain when he was told that the domain name was ‘pending deletion’. But soon after, the domain name was put back on sale at a price of $14,445. And on August 27,2009, the domain name was transferred to M/S Portfolio Brains, a domain name auctions website. According to Mr.Jaitley’s counsel, the domain n...

Facebook today announced that its crossed 300 million users across the globe. It also stated in a press release to WATBlog that it has become cashflow positive last quarter even though they expected to achieve the same by 2010. Quite a landmark achievement if you ask us. Finally one can say that social networking is making money! 300 million users are a lot but what’s even more interesting is that its taken just about 300 facebook engineers to reach to that number also less than 4 years in time. Facebook in its release promises that this is just the beginning and there is lots more they plan to offer. We for starters they also announced Prototype which is simple words can be called as Facebook’s Labs (like google labs). So what is Facebook Prototype? 2009-09-16 10:54:00
Now that we have had so many social networks jostling for market shares, it is time to stop and wonder how many of these social networks have introduced features that have actually helped in the core concept – of making social networking easier. In the recent past, we have had Facebook clone Twitter’s tagging functionality and Twitter striving to compete with Google on real search while still calling itself a social network to fight Facebook. I just wonder if any of these is going to make social networking easier? Yes, these are still the leaders in social networking and that is probably why Orkut , a niche geography player in the social networking has taken the next move in making networking easy with the introduction of video chat. Orkut’s prime market is in India and Brazil, and currently only India is a threatened market while in Brazil, their market share is still sitting pretty at 96% The launch however is not a surprise. Orkut had launched a chat feature tha...

Only 14 Out Of 50 Top Internet Advertisers Present In India. Is That The Ca
2009-09-16 07:01:00
How big does a market grow before the best in the industry set sail? As a matter of fact, the best in the industry set sail not based on how big a market has grown, but how big a market can grow. In that regard, India is among the front runners and little wonder that so many MNCs have set their eyes on the Indian market. But apparently, the top Internet advertisers are yet to follow suit. In a recent study conducted by TNS Media Intelligence, only 14 of the 50 biggest internet advertisers in the world have their operations in India; either directly or through partnerships. Big names that are still not present here include Scottrade, TD Ameritrade Brokerage, Sprint, E-Trade, Nascar and Netflix. What could be the reason behind this? The abysmal internet infrastructure has been raked in time and again, but in this case, that is surely not the reason. That is because while India could have a meager 6-7 percent internet penetration, in terms of volumes, it is still among the highest in ...

Voice Comes Calling on Facebook: Vivox Announces Voices Chat System
2009-09-15 20:24:00
I frankly don’t know how to react to a piece of news such as this. In a few weeks time Facebook users can have voice chat and app developers can include voice enabled functions within them. The feature however is not developed by Facebook, rather by Vivox a company providing Integrated Voice services online. The service is currently in closed beta. Not Knowing How to React I personally wouldn’t use the system, for one I find the concept annoying, and secondly I have been lazy enough to keep my primary workstation free of a mike. Of course, I am not the best sample for survey by any means, but I’d rather believe a lot of people are like me if it left to beliefs. So on a personal level the news doesn’t add anything of mighty value to me. However, I am excited by the whole new level of communications that this feature can deliver on a platform as big as Facebook. The service works with a Vivox plugin and some of its salient features are: High fidelity chat with...

20 Million Broadband Users Will Take 5 Years While Govt Approves Broadband
2009-09-15 08:04:00
The Broadband Policy of 2004 stated that India would achieve 20 million broadband users by 2010. Now we are at the end of 2009 (almost) and the TRAI latest numbers suggest that broadband penetration in India has just about managed to reach 6.8 million subscribers! At this rate the target of 20 million broadband subscribers would be reached by 2014 so said Mr Manoj Kohli,Chairman, CII National Committee on Telecom and Broadband and CEO and Joint Managing Director of Bharti AirTel Ltd. Inspite of this slow growth the CII is aiming for 214 million connections by 2014 i.e. in the next 5 years. A tall ask if you ask us. The wire line infrastructure in India is certainly not equipped to provide this growth. What may give it the impetus is the upcoming wimax auctions which may lead to India being connected via Wimax. We have reported earlier on how 20% of the worlds wimax internet connections might be in India by 2012 and that could be the way broadband penetration could grow. There are a...

2009-09-15 06:58:00
Well if the DoT and the Government had stuck to its promise the above date of 7th December would have been the actual roll out date for 3G across all operators but (sigh!) promises are meant to be broken. WATBlog has tracked the 3G auction saga very closely and we have informed you each time the auction has been delayed, delayed, delayed and again delayed! and even more delay! Phew! So much delay made us question if the government realized the importance of 3G? So much delay that we did one of our most detailed posts on the 3G Saga (must read if you ask me!).  Finally recently the 3G auction base price was fixed at 3500 crores. This meant that an auction date would be announced soon. Now a New Auction Date Is Fixed The new auction date fixed is 7th of December 2009 (yes it was to be in 2008 now its 2009! iPhone 3G has come and gone and now its iPhone3GS!). The government will issue a notice inviting applications from interested bidders on Oct. 26, with the final date for receiving...

Google Introduces Fast Flip And Shares Revenue With Publishers For The Firs
2009-09-15 05:37:00
Scott Karp of Publishing 2.0 summed it up the best, Google understands web publishing and the web better than publishers. So while the men in the business of news (and the women for that matter) are all busy thinking better models of business to survive in digital medium, Google has come out with an all new way to access and read news.  With Fast Flip, Google makes news a more print like commodity and delivers and innovation that perhaps publishers should have been the first to try. And to make it happen Google has also gone out of its usual ways and done a revenue share with publishers. The idea behind Flip Fast as one can gauge from the name is to make browsing faster. The enormous amount of news and content that is available on the web makes sure that loading a news site is pain to the eyes and a load on even the fastest browsers in high broadband. Google considers that a print like solution where we can flip through to the content that we need like in a magazine is what the we...

72% Mobile Internet Users Engage With Ads. Do These Stats Convey The True P
2009-09-14 14:30:00
Can advertisers expect a better engagement level with their target audience on the mobile phones than the wired internet? Possibly so, if a recent study by InMobi, a mobile advertising network is anything to go by. According to this new report, nearly three-fourth of the mobile internet users in India positively engage with the brands that advertise on the mobile phones! But be forewarned, this report is nowhere close to a scientific study. The advertising network surveyed 205 students from Mumbai IIT School of Management. 57% of the respondents had accessed Internet from their mobile phones. Of this 57%,  72.5% agreed to have engaged with the ads in some way or the other. 10% of them had called the advertiser for more info while 17.5% had gone ahead and made a purchase. I cannot digest these numbers for the simple reason that neither are they a diverse sample set nor is the sample set large enough. But it is worth discussing if engagement levels on the mobile phones are in fact b...

The State Of E-mail Marketing In India
2009-09-14 13:42:00
The past ten years have seen an extraordinary flurry of jargons and buzz-words in the domain of marketing. While the only big inclusion in the marketing budgets of corporates is Internet marketing, this term itself can mean so many different things. Search Engine Marketing , blog marketing, email marketing, social media marketing are just some of these new buzz words. Today we have marketing books just to teach you how to market your brand via a Facebook or a Twitter. While such new avenues of marketing are being created every now and then, only a few of these marketing channels have stuck to being a reliable medium over the long run. A recent study showed that channels like search engine marketing and email marketing are among those that have stood the test of time to remain the best forms of Internet marketing still. Email marketing has been a rage in the western world for quite sometime. The reasons are not difficult to fathom. Email is still the primary form of communication for...

Ning Launches Apps’ Services For Its Array Of Social Networks –
2009-09-14 13:08:00
The app fever refuses to die down and so is the buzzword in Web 2.0 scenario, even Ning. The white label social networking giant has launched apps service for its networking portal. Ning had earlier launched the App service for Admin profiles and also notified the expansion of apps one month earlier. The new app platform would allow network administrator to implement the apps on their networking sites and thus harness the true potential for their social networks. The app platform is based upon OpenSocial , supported by Google and thus could see a flurry of other apps introduced on the portal. In the beginning Ning would have only 90 apps but expect the numbers to ramp up seriously. Ning in recent times has been building up on features to fight competition from similar services like multiply. The company recently received another $15 million at a valuation of more than 750 million. The introduction of application would provide it a big boost as in recent times launching a ...

Netcore Sent 60 Crore SMSes For BJP During Elections! – Did Intrusive
2009-09-14 10:59:00
We were attending IAMAI’s Digital convergence event at Welingkars on Saturday and Abhijit Saxena CEO of Netcore stated a statistic which baffled us. He stated that they had partnered with BJP during the recent elections and sent over 60 crore smses to people! Wow 60 crore is huge by any standard! Lets put the economics of this number into perspective: 60 crore smses at even 5 paisa per sms (which is about the lowest that operators charge for bulk sms) would mean 3 crore rupees in just sending out smses! Now everyone knows that BJP lost these elections and we have also questioned earlier whether digital media was to blame for the same or no. Now with this statistic into picture one wonders whether it was the intrusive nature of sms that pissed people off to not vote for the BJP? Whatever the reason. These last elections surely broke benchmarks as far as use of digital media is concerned and it remains to be seen how parties continue to use this medium in upcoming elections an...

Real Time Search On Google And We Didn’t Even Know That (Nearly)
2009-09-14 09:09:00
Ran Geva, CEO of Omigli has found an interesting hack to make Google come up with real time search results. He should know it well, for Omigli is a specialized search engine that crawls UGC on many ‘real time’  platforms on the web. What Omigli does is besides the point for the time being. The real question how do you make Google deliver real time results. Most of us know that Google introduced time based search options on web results back in May which was the closest it got to real time tracking of the web. The highlight of the timelines being the ‘most recent’ feature which gave results of content that came up in the past 10 15 minutes (usually averaging at 20 mins), besides features such as past 24 hours, week, month and anytime. This was a feature that they initally had only for Google news. Regular users can access this feature by clicking on Show Options just below the search box in the Search Results page. Now these features obviously works on some t...

TEDIndia’s List Of Speakers Announced: A Tasty Line-up

The list of speakers for TEDIndia was announced recently on the TED Blog and what a smashing line-up it is. There are folks from the developmental sector: There’s C.K Prahlad, who has sparked enthusiasm in all of us to peek down at the bottom of the pyramid. There’s IIM Professor Anil Gupta who founded the Honeybee Network, a database of Grassroots innovation (and that’s just the tip of what he’s accomplished). And there’s also Matthew Spacie, founder of Magic Bus, the Mumbai based NGO that uses sport as a way to connect with underprivileged children bringing discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship into their lives. There’s also Jib Ellison, who is the founder of Blu Skye Sustainability Consulting, Wal-Mart’s sustainability partner. How about a dosage of cool? There’s Pranav Mistry, an MIT grad student who founded Sixthsense (check out Sixthsense from a previous TEDtalk). I hope this talk has some updates from the earlier version. Twitter Unleashes New Terms Of Service – Learns From Facebook
2009-09-14 07:15:00
So now Twitter has revised its terms of Service . In a mail sent by Biz Stone, he announced that the folks down at the start-ups office have gained a better understanding of how users use their service and hence have updated the TOS. Twitter learns from Facebook - As in case with Facebook, who realized the hard way, the main issue is the wording in these hard to understand TOS which is filled with Lawyer Speak and not in English. Twitter has done well to sugar-coat its new TOS in a recent blog post and explain to its users in brief what it comprises of. First and foremost : Your content belongs to you. They seemed to have learnt well (once again, probably from FB) that things go wrong when you mess around with people’s content so they are declaring openly that “all your tweets do NOT belong to us” and you are the owner of all the content you post on Twitter, however, Twitter can use the content in any way it wants to without having to pay you royalty.
