The Next Net 25
2006-04-12 18:13:00
I recently read the article on CNNMoney.com/Business 2.0 magazine about The Next Net 25. The focus of the article was "Web 2.0" and what it will take to be the next big thing on the Internet. The article looks at 5 different niches on the internet, each with 5 different sites to watch, and they through a curveball into the mix - the "Incumbent to Watch". The incumbent is always one of the big boys - Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft, Amazon, etc. I'm sure you've heard of them. The Social Media section, with? 5 different sites to watch, is probably the most interesting. With the success of MySpace, which has probably been the biggest net-phenomenon ever, and the talk of a $2B pricetag on Facebook, it would seem this is the most lucrative area for a startup, but likely the most competitive. Although Tagworld had a lot of hype when it first came out, I think YouTube (or the incumbent Yahoo!) will be the best bet for something extraordinary in the group. I find the Mashups and filters? the m...
The Epitomy of the Internet
2006-04-08 02:44:00
It's Friday, so at the end of the day, I decide to do something a little more fun. I'm looking into developing my own slideshow in Flash - a million of them out there, but none quite the way I want or they're trying to charge me. Plus, it's always good to learn a little something. So before I set out on the project,? Silent Rob and? look around for a tutorial so I can brush up on my skills. We stumbled across kirupa.com? - what an amazing resource! I have a handful of Flash books, from Flash 5 to MX 2004, and they're are all great resources, but this website is everything the Internet should be. Free information on a useful subject. The tutorials, from what I've seen, are straightforward and in depth, and interestingly enough, the tutorials I've looked at seem to give you the option to learn the material, or, for those tainted users, you can just d/l the finished version. If there's something the Internet has taught me, it's that everything is out there free, you just have ...

The Evolution of Social Networking.
2006-04-08 00:07:00
So over the last few months you have heard probably heard about the sale of MySpace, and the potential Facebook deal for hundreds of millions. How did this? happen and were is it all going? Lets call a spade a spade; in the earily 2000's, dating sites were all the rage, raking in more money than porn. Cashing in big were Yahoo!, eHarmony, Lavalife and Match.com. Matchmaking was big business but it wasent long before everyone and their dog had a matchmaking site. The powers that be also knew it was a tough to market online dating to teens, and a need to develop new products for a different martket was required. So skiping ahead a few years, you have MySpace, hi5, and Friendster all jockeying for users and traffic. They are all the same, you collect net friends and show off your high quaility web cam pics to all your 'real virtual friends'. It's obviously a big deal because Yahoo!, Google and MSN have all jumped in with their own social networking site. Now we are caught up, but...

Friday Afternoon Musings
2006-04-07 21:44:00
TGIF. It's been another interesting week in the world of the Internet and technology. Macintosh has finally stepped up and allowed Windows,? specifically Windows? XP, to run their Intel powered computer. A couple different things can be said about this. First, Mac's don't even have a double digit market share and have been plagued by their OS. Now new users can use a familiar program on a better computer. PC's will likely have to improve in order to maintain their current market share. For Mac, I'd have to say it's a case of if you can't beat them, join them. Google and Earthlink finalized a deal with San Francisco to provide wireless internet for the entire city, beating out a handful of other proposals. An ad-free,? paid service? and ad-rich, free service is said to be provided, but regardless, I imagine this is only the begining. YouTube and Meez were both talked about on SiliconBeat? for their multi-million dollar investments. YouTube is a fast-growing company that has p...

Facebook

So we're probably a little behind everyone else posting about this, but the buzz around the sale of Facebook is amazing. The idea that? Facebook is looking to be purchased for $2B just doesn't seem logical. MySpace.com obviously set the bar, but the site generates more traffic, has an obvious niche (music), and sold for about $590M. The next "big thing" is obviously going to sell for more, and Facebook could be a good fit for the right company with its student userbase? - in Businessweek? Viacom is being suggested as a possible purchaser. The article suggests that Facebook is the seventh-most heavily trafficked site on the Internet according to comScore, although the people at Alexa? seem to have different numbers. Whatever happens, it'll be interesting to see how this might affect other similar websites, like Friendster, another site that is rumoured to be up for sale.
