He pictured his name, his identity, as a twig in a swirling brook. He'd tossed it in and was watching it dance and bob around and spin and dip under momentarily, but he tracked it with his eyes and watched it come up. If he could just keep it in sight, he could keep his name in sight, he would be okay.Right?Who am I asking? He tried to make the question vocal: Right, he mouthed. He heard no sound. He hadn't expected to, since he'd tried talking before. But he knew he had said something. He knew he had spoken. He had no way of knowing how much time had passed but he knew that it was passing.He remembered someone once telling him that waiting time is worse than any other time. "Waiting time?" he had asked. The friend (friend? Coworker? Acquaintance? Wife?) had explained that time spent waiting for someone or something was "waiting time," and each minute could be hours, subjectively speaking.Tom wondered why he couldn't remember who had told him that.
