Jose and I had been best friend since high school. I lived in Queens while he lived in his double suite apartment in downtown Manhattan. We went to the same university in Waterbury, Connecticut which was about two and a half hours drive from where we lived. Jose had Colombian descent while I was a Nepal-born Indian. He had a great singing voice while I was a good dancer. I was even going to evening Salsa classes after work. We had lots of similarities, and perhaps that was the reason that held us together. Notwithstanding the fact of him being a pure veggie who grumbled over my incessant craving for non-vegetarian food, we buddies went along great. Year 2004. It was the beginning of a beautiful summer in the Big Apple. It was our last day of the first semester and we were all prepared for two long weeks of holiday. I had a lot to do - needed to go to Florida, find a full-fledged job and start minting some quick money. How could I afford to waste my time? I had always wanted to liv...

21 March 2008 I can feel her. I can sense her. It’s like I’m talking to her: one-on-one, face-to-face. It’s like the two of us, walking very long distances, musing idiotically over each other, blushing, tumbling and making the most stupid faces we’d never dare in this conscious life. I can talk to her and I do not need speech. I can laugh at her jokes, feel sad when she cries, take her by my arms and give her a warm hug. I can, because I want to and nothing can stop me and my heart. Our distances are so close that three continents, two oceans are mere nothing, and living almost fifteen thousand miles away from each other, the two of us can still feel the power of love: that searing hot burning fire of love. 16 October 2006 The chill had just set in. I knew she completed all the academic documentation and eventually prepared to fly off with the ease. She was prepared, she had fastened her luggage, buckled up her shoes, bid every person she knew good bye, attended lengthy fare...

The present day crisis in the country is far worse off than it seems to be. I’m writing this piece, with my clock ticking by the side because in twenty minutes or so, I’ll have no electricity – for four long hours. That’s a daily routine, eight hours a day, fifty two hours a week – I’ll have to stay in darkness. There are no vehicles plying in the roads because there’s no fuel. A fellow formerly in the most wanted list of criminals is daydreaming about his virtues of being the first “president” of the country. Many people have no food, no fuel. You always get a busy tone in the telephone. Work is getting difficult day by day. Deadlines won’t be met; promises can’t be kept because the devices will simply not work. The devices of an efficient state are dysfunctional at the moment. There is chaos and uncertainty looming all over. There is very little hope that the elections in April will be conducted with ease. There are a group of people out their exasperated, desperate and infuriate...

My first high school crush, Ugh! I still remember that. What a lovely feeling it was. Indeed, falling in love for the first time had never been that glad. I never imagined I’d ever fall for a girl. I was fourteen when I first took notice of her. No, we had been in the same grade from a long time but it was only then I had started taking notice of her. She was a pretty girl, moderately built – not petite but people liked to call her “shorty.” That was what all her girl friends called her. She was the shortest in the group but she never paid attention to whatever the people said. Just like I had been in love for the first time – at least I suppose it was so; it was very natural for her to be attracted to a guy. No, I am not going to give you good news because this is not a happy story. She was falling for another guy. Well, of course the rich and famous type. People would preceive some sort of gayish tendencies in me if I said he was in fact, charming but I would not defer from truth...

Rupa was already dressed up for work. She wasn’t the regular workaholic type but her boss hated her turning up late for work. She was sort of scared of her high pitched, self-acknowledged, ego ridden and apprehensively tyrant boss. Not that she never got better proposals from other organisations but something just kept her tied to the firm. Rupa dressed up as usual, munched up some offhandedly cooked rice grains and hurriedly headed to catch a microbus. She lived away from the city so reaching office in time meant catching an early microbus headed that way. Soon people would start pouring in from all directions and it would be almost impossible to accommodate in any of the given microbuses. It meant taking a congested, smelly and treacherous trip to work and Rupa always hated it. She hated the smelly armpits, smokers smelling like chimneys and crying and whining infants; and of course the endless halts to pick and drops passengers on the way. Rupa left the microbus and paced toward...

The Great Human Empire
2007-12-18 06:00:00
The year is 7056 AD. Planet Earth is not what it was five thousand years ago. The Great Flood of 2010 ended the once prosperous terrestrial life in the planet. Great continents immersed into the sea, the human civilisation was destroyed. Only very high lands in the Himalayas and the Alps survived the Flood. The Atlantic and Pacific Oceans merged; Africa and Australia went under seabed. All the creatures living in land died. Only few aquatic species made it to the dawn of a new civilisation. The world became an ocean hence giving rise to entirely new inhabitants of the planet called the Logabians. Logabians are species that evolved six hundred years after The Great Flood. They are averagely sized and closely resemble to the primates, only the difference being they live underwater. The most remarkable feature about these creatures is that they are one of the only mammals to have lived aquatic. They are adapted to live in warm water towards shallower parts of oceans. They are intelli...

A Lovely New Nation
2007-12-09 06:00:00
“…We have just come out of a 12 year long insurgency and we’re looking forward to building a prosperous country… blah blah blah..” Mitesh mumbled shaking his head as he flipped through the pages of the newspaper. “Doesn’t that trigger you?” Disha asked as she applied thinner to her nail. “What?” “A new nation?” Disha giggled. Mitesh was almost blown away by the question. He folded the paper and slammed it on the coffee table in front of him. He clutched his arms behind his head and pulled himself back in the couch. “You mean, does that ‘trigger’ you? Come on girl, you can’t be talking about all that shit! Look at you. You’re a .. you’re a .. girl.” He said making a funny face. “So it shouldn’t bug me, you say, because I am a girl? All the stuff going around me is trivial? Useless for a girl? Is that what you’re trying to say?” Disha asked as she applied a fresh coat of enamel on her toenail. “Come on, Disha. There are people out there, the politicians, who need to be b...

Have you seen one of those women activists advocating for the betterment of women? I am sure you’ve seen one raising slogan, trying to prove men wrong at every point, desperately trying to make their point. Yes, I am referring to those active types who wouldn’t mind basking in the sun in front of some government office holding placards in hand, wearing sunglasses with their shawl wrapped around their head. They’re classic. I strongly feel they should be allowed to do everything they want – because we know we’ve given enough space from women in whatever we’ve done and their few sit-ins can’t flip the entire human taxonomy. They asked for 33% reservation in almost every walk of life and we have agreed. They asked for preset seats in public commutation service and we said okay. They said they were against dowry and we said we wouldn’t ask for any. Men, the subjugated half of the human taxonomy have never turned a woman’s proposal down, yet, they think we are not doing enough. They wou...

Born on the 12th of December
2007-12-03 06:00:00
I am glad I share my birthday with one of the finest painters of the century. Edvard Munch – who gave us paintings like “The Scream” and “Maddona”. Remember that bald man from the picture, hands spread on his cheeks, screaming for nothing? Yea, sometimes I wished I could stand on a bridge like that, perhaps above Dhobikhola and scream my heart out. Soothing, I suppose! Then there is another popular guy in India, Yuvraj Singh, one of the god-like cricketers in India worshipped for – I don’t know why Indians make a fuss about the game. That’s an entirely different topic and lets not go there. My point is come on, he’s good looking, smart and drives women crazy but let him play his sport. Why hit his image when he does badly and worship when they win a match (with some teams like Bangladesh or Kenya.) But being born on the 12th of December can be enthralling but I remember one birthday when everything came crashing down. It was my fourteenth birthday, I vividly remember. The whole h...

It was my first encounter with guerrillas. Two of my friends were in desperate need of a vacation so they had dragged me into a weekend holiday I least asked for. My boss was already mad at me and just in case something went wrong -- I mean to say that if I didn't make it back to work on Monday, my job would be gone. Two of my closest friends, Jay and Monika bargained me the sake of our friendship so I had to give it a nod."Where are we going anyway?" I asked as I opened the inaugural can of beer for the weekend. "That's a surprise. You'll know when we reach there." Monika didn’t say anything more about this mysterious place. She took few photographs on the way and showed them to Jay who was in the driver's seat. Jay just said "That's nice." to every photo but hardly ever looked at any of them. Monika was a noisy pretty brat. She and Jay had been seeing each other since high school but I wondered what kept these people together for so long. Jay was a no-nonsense determined youn...

Adapted from original story "Feels like heaven" by Srijan TandukarThe winter chill was setting in thick and fast. The days were getting shorter and on some days, the city would be enveloped in a seemingly impenetrable layer of fog. Life was starting to get difficult by the day for those who had morning shifts at work or study. For others however, it was just another day; so what if it's a bit colder today than it was yesterday! For Matt, who worked as a lifeguard at the local swimming pool, winters meant fewer swimmers and fewer swimmers meant lesser salary. That was not at all good because he had his parents and his sister to feed at home. He really didn't earn very much in any case, even during summers. His parents were not at all happy with what he was making out of his life. They thought that the job was menial and that the swimming pool was the place where all the spoilt brats hung out. His father, specially, loathed his son's position. His business was going downhill for a ...
The Other Man

"This is terrible! Man, you've screwed it up. I mean, what.. what the hell was that all about?" My heart was pounding as I talked to Max on the phone about what I just found over the Internet. Thanks to Google, sometimes you get results you're never prepared for. My feet were ice cold and I was sweating as I stared vacantly on the computer screen in dismay and partial shock. I didn't expect a clarification or any justification from Max to whatever the truth was. But, but it horrified and pissed me off at the same time. Internet is for discovering things you don't know. Indeed, sometimes it tells you things you never knew - the most profound secrets, truths buried deep down in the mound of hypertext.Max and I had been friends from like grade 6. We went to the same school and attended the same university. In fact, I had been so much involved with Max that I dropped my biotechnology for management accounting so that we could hang around together in college. His house was just a blo...
The Winter Lullaby

Little children in the corner of the dark street were talking about it.Little souls, quivering in bitter cold, seek definitions to hunger, misery and despair.Just from the window above, a mother murmurs oddly as ifshe is putting her child to sleep. She doesn't sing lullabies to children don't tell false stories about the princessbecause she knows it's a lie. A damned lie.Bedtime stories of the rainbows are gone - stale and obsolete. But the children need some food, and some sleepand where there's nothing to nibble on, Songs are what they eat.And the mother has to lie, another damn lie.Winter is building up outside and mothers do nothing but sing another lie.One of the little boys below had something in his mind, and put a smile. He listened to the lady above with the hope of bright days to come.A hope that's fuelled by imagination and worlds that never exist,A hope that's nurtured in million other hearts,a hope that's obstinate to the freezing cold,a hope that lives across time,a...
