NOW My personal philosophy was evolving and reaching new levels; it was practical, made sense and had conclusions, or at least consequences. Since I?d been introduced to existentialism, the ideas of personal responsibility, choice, and consequences started to grow. Gaining respect as ideas, they needed to be seriously considered for action. I realized that once I made ...

I may be crazy, but what do I know. I had a day dream of what could be, it was strange and out of this world. My whole life planned out before me. I?m reminded of what Justin said, ?I?ll still be living long after your die. That?s what happens to healthy people. They die ...

Back in my chair I remember where I am, the TV is on inside. Thinking about TV I wonder how things get recorded. By being captured they stay real; there is proof of their existence. This can be said for all forms of recorded history, news papers, videos, paper, rock paintings, digitally and physically. Even ...

Pressing the button lights flash in the front of the book, the screen lights up, theres are blurry picture. It’s bright and difficult to see. More changing screens, then it flickers black, lighting up again the screen stays constant. It?s still very bright, there are all sorts of colours. Slowly discovering there are words and ...

The screen flashes back, I need to turn this off, it?s too wild. What is modern life? It?s a good deal different from the past; we have it better now. This man is calling for fuel consumption, it?s been a lifetime and the same fears still exist, so little has changed. This space and time ...

I have been told that I lie. Today David said, ?I don?t believe anything he says, he lies!? I don?t think I lie a lot; I?m sarcastic and say things I don?t mean, but that?s not lying, is it? I don?t know… this may be something to consider. What does it say about me? Am ...

THE PAST Christmas break had come and gone and I was back in school, not interested in any of my classes; school wasn?t where I wanted to be. I went, but only put in a minimal effort. It was the winter semester and there was a lot of snow on the ground, my room was unusually ...

During the next class we talked about existentialism again and I gained further respect. When class was over I went to the front to ask the professor my question, he quickly and without much consideration said, “Yes, existentialists believe that depression and mental disease are a choice.” En guard, the answer I suspected. This created an ...

The professor is covering existentialism, this is what I have been waiting for; it?s what the professor is most interested in too. He believes it, in fact he?s written the book for this section. I?d heard about existentialism before and been quite interested. I only know some basics, not enough to realize how much this ...

There are various thoughts as to the cause of procrastination; some say it’s laziness, or a lack of drive, others say it?s because of perfectionism, and still others says it?s a naturally imperfection of the human condition. None of these were the cause of my procrastination; mine was caused by fear, a fear of not ...

The class focused on Aristotle, Hobbes, Kant, and the Utilitarian’s; finding these topics interesting, I was compelled by what the professor said. He was enthusiastic about the course content, and pushed the interest into me. I was most curious about what he looked forward to teaching; he kept talking about it but wasn’t going to present it till the end of the semester. Halfway through the year, the class was given an assignment comparing the first two thinkers of the course. I understood both of their ideas and looked forward to writing the paper; I also had both of the books so that wouldn’t be a problem. However, I did have one problem; I always had this problem when it came to studying and completing assignments. Always procrastinating and waiting till the last minute to get things done. This was exactly what happened and I only started the essay two days before it was due. On the due date an hour before class I was still at home typing to get it finished. I almost didn’...

THE PAST Christmas break had come and gone and I was back in school, not interested in any of my classes; school wasn’t where I wanted to be. I went, but only put in a minimal effort. It was the winter semester and there was a lot of snow on the ground, my room was unusually dark and so were my feelings. Still depressed and seeing things with negative eyes, it seemed like the world was conspiring against me. Maybe this wasn’t real. There is one class I liked, I’d taken a similar course in the past so I had some background, plus the topic was interesting. It was a philosophy course that focused on ethical theories; I’d always been into philosophy, and I liked to read about it in my spare time. Even though I was into philosophy, my personal philosophy was flawed; it didn’t make sense and lead to pessimistically irrational conclusions. An example can be found in a conversation I had with Walter. I claimed not to believe in the subconscious - on the surface there may have been...

A Turning Point?

NOW I was at my dad?s house; he lives North of the city, far enough that the snow stays on the ground. I hadn?t seen this much all year, it was amazing. The ground had a thick layer of ice and snow, heavy and tough but workable. I?d been at the office all day; mentioning that ...

This thought reminded me of a situation from the past; I knew exactly what my turning point was. I remembered the time and the experience that made everything change. Well, maybe not everything, but something very important changed. Through it, I opened my eyes and my perspective was new. Before everything was negative; it was always ...

I?ve completed my masterpiece and am quite impressed; it looks like one of those Inuit stone arrangements, an Inukshuk. I?m filled with a sense of accomplishment; I?ve done the job, worked hard and enjoyed it. Using the left side of my brain to reason and clear the sidewalk, then the right to create. I?ve destroyed ...

New Eyes
2007-11-03 06:00:00
A few more months passed; it was Christmas vacation, and we had made plans for New Years Eve. That day I called Fiona; I always did the calling. She was quiet and her tone was off; she talked awhile, and then said, “We have family coming over, you can?t come anymore.” I was upset because ...

As the bus pulled away from the mall, Fiona looked in my direction and asked, “What?s wrong?” “I don?t know, it?s been a long day.” She could tell that something was wrong, so she asked again, “What?s wrong? Are you mad at me?? She stopped for a moment, looking distressed she continued, ?You’ve been like ...

A couple of days later I was thinking of what David said; it made sense, and I didn’t really want to leave. It was also true that all of the ideas involved leaving without Fiona. I suddenly had an insight. ‘Fiona makes me unhappy. I want to leave not to get away from school or ...

I started to want change; I talked about leaving school and moving somewhere to start new. This was irrational, and with some pushing I realized that dropping out with only a year left wasn?t wise. It may have been the consequences or what my father said; regardless I didn?t take action. Then I considered moving ...

Before My shyness caused other social problems, particularly when it came to making friends. I didn?t know how to make friends, or even mingle with other people. It turns out that Fiona’s dislike for tomatoes - my favourite food - was a result of an experience she had had with her grandfather when she was younger. He had handed her a tomato and then eaten one like an apple, so she had assumed it was an apple. When she bit into it ...

A pot of rice boiled away, chicken broiled in the oven and a Greek salad sat on the counter; everything was almost done. The door bell rang; turning around, I walked towards the door, through the spaces between the blinds stood Fiona. Opening the door I say, “Come in.” Stepping into the house, Fiona’s blond hair lies across her supple shoulders; she`s wearing a green jacket, I notice how small her body is. She’s smiling, she must be happy to see me. She asks, “How are you?” I respond, ‘Pretty good, dinner is almost ready.” She asked what we are going to eat; telling her I point, showing her as we are already in the kitchen. Upon seeing the food she makes a face; noticing, I ask what`s wrong. “I hate tomatoes and black olives.” Ironically two of the main ingredients in a Greek salad. I should have realized at this point what I was getting myself into. But it was alright; they hadn’t been added to the salad yet so they sat freshly cut on the c...
