The smile
2007-10-17 15:46:00 Many Americans are familiar with The Little Prince, a wonderful book byAntoine de Saint-Exupery. This is a whimsical and fabulous book and works asa children's story as well as a thought-provoking adult fable.Far fewer are aware of Saint Exupery's other writings, novels and shortstories. Saint Exupery was a fighter pilot who fought against the Nazis andwas killed in action. Before World War II, he fought in the Spanish Civil Waragainst the fascists. He wrote a fascinating story based on that experienceentitled The Smile (Le Sourire). It is this story which I'd like to share with you now. It isn't clearwhether or not he meant this to be autobiographical or fiction. I choose tobelieve it to be the former. He said that he was captured by the enemy andthrown into a jail cell. He was sure that from the contemptuous looks andrough treatment he received from his jailers he would be executed the nextday. From here, I'll tell the story as I remember it in my own words."I was sure that I w...
Change Begins With Choice
2007-10-12 07:35:00 Any day we wish; we can discipline ourselves to make important changes in ourlives. Any day we wish; we can open the book that will open our mind to newknowledge. Any day we wish; we can start a new activity. Any day we wish;we can start the process of life change. We can do it immediately, or nextweek, or next month, or next year.We can also do nothing. We can pretend rather than perform. And if the ideaof having to change ourselves makes us uncomfortable, we can remain as weare. We can choose rest over labor, entertainment over education, delusionover truth, and doubt over confidence. The choices are ours to make. Butwhile we curse the effect, we continue to nourish the cause. As Shakespeareuniquely observed, "The fault is not in the stars, but in ourselves." Wecreated our circumstances by our past choices. We have both the ability andthe responsibility to make better choices beginning today. Those who are insearch of the good life do not need more answers or more time to think th... The Cave People
2007-10-10 07:04:00 Long ago, or maybe not so long ago, there was a tribe in a dark, cold cavern. The cave dwellers would huddle together and cry against the chill. Loud andlong they wailed. It was all they did. It was all they knew to do. The soundsin the cave were mournful, but the people didn't know it, for they had neverknown joy. The spirit in the cave was death, but the people didn't know it,for they had never known life. But then, one day, they heard a different voice. "I have heard your cries,"it announced. "I have felt your chill and seen your darkness. I have come tohelp."The cave people grew quiet. They had never heard this voice. hope soundedstrange to their ears. "How can we know you have come to help?""Trust me," he answered. "I have what you need."The cave people peered through the darkness at the figure of the stranger. Hewas stacking something, then stooping and stacking more."What are you doing?" one cried, nervously. The stranger didn't answer."What are you making?" one shouted even ... More About: People , Cave
Soar With The Eagles
2007-10-10 06:56:00 There's an old fable that talks about a man who found an eagle's egg and putit in a nest of a barnyard hen.The eagle hatched with the brood of chicks and grew up with them. All hislife, the eagle did what the barnyard chicks did, thinking he was a barnyardchicken. He scratched the earth for worms and insects. He clucked and cackled. And hewould thrash his wings and fly a few feet in the air.Years passed and the eagle grew very old. One day he saw a magnificent birdabove him in the cloudless sky.It glided in graceful majesty among powerful wind currents, with scarcely abeat of its strong golden wings. The old eagle looked up in awe. "Who'sthat?" he asked. "That's the eagle, the king of the birds," said hisneighbor. "He belongs to the sky. We belong to the earth--we're chickens."So the eagle lived and died a chicken, for that's what he thought he was.How sad when we who are children of the King live as chickens when we couldfly with the eagles.Moral stories can improve your moral... Look Upon Them As Wounded
2007-10-08 04:49:00 After vaccinating a young boy with an injection in the arm, a doctorwanted to stick on a bandage. "Please put it on the other arm," the boypleaded. "Why do that?" the doctor asked. "This will let everyone know you havebeen vaccinated and they won't hit your sore arm." Through moral stories, the idea is to present the greatness of the humanity."Please put it on my other arm! Please!" the boy begged. "You don't knowthe kids at my school." He couldn't show his weakness. He was afraid to let others know of his vulnerability for fear of being hurt more than he was already.Adults, too, are pretty good at hiding pain. Not usually physical pain, but the pain of loss or rejection or fear. They like to appear as if they arein control; they can handle whatever life throws at them; they're on top ofit. And too often... they end up going it alone. No one understands. No oneis there to help. Susan Muto, in her book BLESSINGS THAT MAKE US BE (Crossroad, 1982), tells a story of a great ruler who...

An Action Challenge
2007-10-05 06:43:00 My friend, Cheryl Richardson, head of Oprah's coaching team, has helpedme take a very practical approach to life. Good ideas stay in the realm ofknowledge until they birth actions that affect our lives. When we act onthem, they become wisdom. This month, reflect on the Dalai Lama's threepoints and then take action on at least one of them.Through moral stories, the idea is to present the greatness of the humanity.1. What one thing can you do that will make you a more peaceful person?2. The average person needs 8 hours and 15 minutes sleep every night. If youare getting less, try sleeping more. This is wisdom, not sloth. If you havetrouble sleeping, and one-third of all adult Americans do, try Harvardresearcher Gregg D. Jacobs' excellent book, Say Good Night to Insomnia.3. Identify one area in your life that is a persistent problem, and that youwould like to solve but have given up on. Teaching Story: I Tried To Climb The Mountain Today
2007-10-05 06:39:00 I tried to climb the mountain today. As I inched my way up the path, I feltoverwhelmed, so I had to turn back.I tried to climb the mountain today. On my journey, darkness started to fall, and I was full of fear, so I had to return to a safe place.I was ready to climb the mountain today. But it was so hot outside, I thoughtI better stay in my nice air-conditioned house and rest up for tomorrow'sattempt.I was about to climb the mountain today. But I had so many other things todo, so instead of climbing the mountain I took care of much more importanttasks. I washed my car, mowed the grass and watched the big game.Today the mountain will just have to wait.I was going to climb the mountain today. But as I stared at the mountain init's majestic beauty, I knew I stood no chance of making it to the top, so Ifigured why even bother trying.I had forgotten about climbing the mountain today, until a friend came by andasked me what I was up to lately. I told him I was thinking about climbingtha... More About: Story , Teaching , Climb , Mountain
Potatoes, Eggs and Coffee Beans
2007-10-04 06:23:00 Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life wasmiserable and that she didn't know how she was going to make it. She wastired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problemwas solved, another one soon followed. Her father, a chef, took her to thekitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Oncethe three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in thesecond pot, and ground coffee beans in the third pot.He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. Thedaughter, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. Aftertwenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the potand placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl.He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup.Through moral stories, the idea is to present the greatness of the humanity.Turning to her he asked. Seek Friends Who Challenge You
2007-10-03 06:30:00 The Talmud tells the story of Rebbi Yochanan, a great scholar who had a study partner named Reish Lakish. (Before becoming a rabbi, Reish Lakish was a bandit. But that's another story...) These two men studied together for many years, until one day Reish Lakish got sick and died. Rebbe Yochanan was seen walking in the street, totally depressed. His students asked him, "What's wrong?" He said, "My study partner died and now I have none." They told him, "Don't worry Rebbi, we'll take care of it." So they went and found a brilliant young man to study with Rebbe Yochanan.Through moral stories, the idea is to present the greatness of the humanity. Two weeks later, Rebbi Yochanan is seen walking in the street again, totally depressed. They asked: "Rebbi, what happened? Why are you so sad? We sent you the most brilliant study partner. What's the problem?"He told them: "My new study partner is so brilliant that whatever I say, he brings 24 proofs that I'm correct. But when I studied wi... How Heavy Is Your Bag?
2007-10-02 03:28:00 One of my teachers had each one of us bring a clear plastic bag and a sack of potatoes. For every person we'd refuse to forgive in our life, we were told to choose a potato, write on it the name and date, and put it in the plastic bag. Some of our bags, as you can imagine, were quite heavy. We were then told to carry this bag with us everywhere for one week, putting it beside our bed at night, on the car seat when driving, next to our desk at work. The hassle of lugging this around with us made it clear what a weight we were carrying spiritually, and how we had to pay attention to it all the time to not forget, and keep leaving it in embarrassing places. Naturally, the condition of the potatoes deteriorated to a nasty slime. This was a great metaphor for the price we pay for keeping our pain and heavy negativity! Too often we think of forgiveness as a gift to the other person, and while that's true, it clearly is also a gift for ourselves! So next time you decide you can't fo... More About: Heavy
A Work Of Art
2007-10-01 06:12:00 Edward Fischer writes in Notre Dame Magazine (February, 1983), that a leper (or, more correctly, a sufferer of Hanson's Disease) in Fiji followed the leading of his twisted hands. He became an internationally known artist. "My sickness I see as a gift of God leading me to my life's work," he said. "If it had not been for my sickness, none of these things would have happened."Through moral stories, the idea is to present the greatness of the humanity. As a young girl, Jessamyn West had tuberculosis. She was so sick that she was sent away to die. During that time she developed her skill as a writer and authored numerous novels in her lifetime. That great author Flannery O'Connor suffered numerous ailments --lupus struck her at 25 and she walked only with the aid of crutches for the final fourteen years of her life. She noted, however, that this illness narrowed her activities in such a way that she had time for the real work of her life, which was writing.Through moral stories, the i... More About: Work
Weakness Or Strength
2007-10-01 06:09:00 Sometimes your biggest weakness can become your biggest strength. Take, for example, the story of one 10-year-old boy who decided to study judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a devastating car accident. The boy began lessons with an old Japanese judo master. The boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move. "Sensei," the boy finally said, "shouldn't I be learning more moves?" "This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you'll ever need to know," the sensei replied.Through moral stories, the idea is to present the greatness of the humanity. Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training. Several months later, the sensei took the boy to his first tournament. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent became impatient and charged; th...
Anger
2007-09-28 06:09:00 Anger is FUEL. We feel it and we want to do something. Hit someone, break something, throw a fit, smash a fist into the wall, tell those bastardsoff. But we are 'nice' people, and what we do with our anger is stuff it,deny it, bury it, block it, hide it, lie about it, medicate it, ignore it.We do everything but 'listen' to it.Through moral stories, the idea is to present the greatness of the humanity.Anger is meant to be listened to. Anger is a voice, a shout, a plea, ademand. Anger is meant to be respected. Why? Because anger is a 'map.'Anger shows us what our boundaries are. Anger shows us where we want to go.It lets us see where we've been and lets us know when we haven't liked it.Anger points the way, not just the finger. In the recovery of a blockedartist, anger is a sign of health.Through moral stories, the idea is to present the greatness of the humanity.Anger is meant to be acted upon. It is not meant to be acted out.Anger points the direction. We are meant to use ang... More About: Anger
Spirit Of Love
2007-09-27 06:23:00 Henry Drummond has said, "The moments when you have really lived are themoments when you have done things in the spirit of love."Here is a story (possibly apocryphal, but powerful nevertheless) about a manwho acted in the spirit of love and what he consequently learned. The story comes from Zig Ziglar's book, See You At The Top (PelicanPublishing Co., 1982). He tells about an old man who stood on a Virginiariverbank many years ago. He was waiting to cross the river and, since it wasbitterly cold and there were no bridges, he would have to "catch a ride" tothe other side. After a lengthy wait he spotted a group of horsemenapproaching. He let the first one pass, then the second, third, fourth andfifth. One rider remained. As he drew abreast, the old man looked him in theeye and said, "Sir, would you give me a ride across the river?"Through moral stories, the idea is to present the greatness of the humanity. The rider immediately replied, "Certainly." Ring Out The Old
2007-09-24 06:24:00 Recently I ordered a spiffy new cell phone with a fabulously low billing rate. The promotion was so popular, I was told, that there would be a 30-90 day wait for the phone. Okay, I can wait; all these years of meditation should have taught me a little patience, at least. Eleven days later I tried to make a call from my current cell phone, and got the message, "Your phone has a verification problem. Please call the business office." God bless the phone company, I thought (not the first time). I called the business office and the representative told me they had no clue why my phone wouldn't access. My bill was paid, and their diagnostic showed no problem. I talked to several reps, still no help. God bless the phone company.Through moral stories, the idea is to present the greatness of the humanity. When I arrived home I found a FedEx box sitting at my doorstep with my new phone. A Late Bloomer
2007-09-21 07:31:00 A cactus stood all alone in the desert, wondering why it was stuck in the middle of nowhere. "I do nothing but stand here all day," it sighed. "What use am I? I'm the ugliest plant in the desert. My spines are thick and prickly, my leaves are rubbery and tough, my skin is thick and bumpy. I can't offer shade or juicy fruit to any passing traveler. I don't see that I'm any use at all." All it did was stand in the sun day after day, growing taller and fatter. Its spines grew longer and its leaves tougher, and it swelled here and there until it was lumpy and lopsided all over. It truly was strange-looking. "I wish I could do something useful," it sighed. By day hawks circled high overhead. "What can I do with my life?" the cactus called. Whether they heard or not, the hawks sailed away. A Complete Genius
2007-09-20 06:12:00 While meandering through a bookstore, I discovered a wealth of books for dummies and idiots. You have probably seen the many volumes directed at stupid people, such as Computers for Dummies and Complete Idiot's Guide to Dating. I even saw Complete Idiot's Guide to Near-Death Experiences! There are hundreds of titles in each of these very popular series, and the number is growing rapidly.Through moral stories, the idea is to present the greatness of the humanity.I was struck by how readily we identify ourselves as dummies and idiots. Obviously we think we are stupid, and these books will help. I wonder what would happen if I published a similar series for geniuses, such as Golf for Sages or The Complete Genius 's Guide to Home Repair. I have a hunch they wouldn't sell very well at all. Not because we are not geniuses. Because we have been trained to regard ourselves as stupid. When I was little, I sat on my front porch one morning and sang several rousing verses of "Take Me Out to ...
Where Is God?
2007-09-19 07:50:00 He was just a little boy, on a week's first day. He was wandering home from Sunday school and dawdling on the way.He scuffed his shoes into the grass, he found a caterpillar. He found a fluffy milkweed pod and blew out all the "filler."A bird's nest in a tree overhead, so wisely placed on high. Was just another wonder that caught his eager eye.A neighbor watched his zig zag course and hailed him from the lawn;asked him where he'd been that day and what was going on."I've been to Bible school" he said and turned a piece of sod. He picked up a wiggly worm replying, 'I've learned a lot of God".."M'm very fine way" the neighbor said, "for a boy to spend his time.""If you tell me where God is, I'll give you a brand new dime."Quick as a flash the answer came. Nor were his accents faint."I'll give you a dollar, mister, if you can tell me where God ain't."Moral stories can improve your moral values.
Meeting God
2007-09-19 07:47:00 There once was a little boy who wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his suitcase with cupcakes, several cans of root beer and started on his journey. When he had gone about three blocks, he saw an elderly woman. She was sitting on a park bench watching the pigeons. The boy sat down next to her and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his root beer when he noticed the lady looked hungry so he offered her a cupcake. She gratefully accepted and smiled at him. Through moral stories, the idea is to present the greatness of the humanity. Her smile was so wonderful that he wanted to see it again, so he offered a root beer as well. Once again she smiled at him. The boy was delighted! They sat there all afternoon eating and smiling without saying a word. As it began to grow dark, the boy realized how tired he was and wanted to go home. He got up to leave but before he had gone no more than a few steps, he turned around and ran back... More About: Meeting
Love In Action
2007-09-19 07:47:00 One night a man came to our house and told me, "There is a family with eight children. They have not eaten for days," I took some food and I went. When I finally came to the family, I saw the faces of those little children disfigured by hunger. There was no sorrow or sadness in their faces, just the deep pain of hunger. I gave the rice to the mother. She divided it in two, and went out, carrying half the rice with her. When she came back, I asked her, "Where did you go?" She gave me this simple answer, "To my neighbors-they are hungry also." I was not surprised that she gave--because poor people are generous. But I was surprised that she knew they were hungry. As a rule, when we are suffering, we are so focused on ourselves we have no time for others.--Mother Teresa More About: Love , Action
Follow Your Bliss
2007-09-18 05:50:00 Author Joseph Campbell often talked about "following your bliss." I heard of a bus driver in Chicago who does just that.He sings while he drives. That's right... sings! And I don't mean he sings softly to himself, either. He sings so that the whole bus can hear! All day long he drives and sings.Through moral stories, the idea is to present the greatness of the humanity. He was once interviewed on Chicago television. He said that he is not actually a bus driver. "I'm a professional singer," he asserted. "I only drive the bus to get a captive audience every single day."His "bliss" is not driving a bus, though that may be a source of enjoyment for some people. His bliss is singing. And the supervisors at the Chicago Transit Authority are perfectly happy about the whole arrangement. You see, people line up to ride his bus. They even let other busses pass by so they can ride with the "singing bus driver." They love it!Through moral stories, the idea is to present the greatness of the h...
Three Messages Of Strong Families
2007-09-18 05:46:00 One family subscribed to the notion that money really CAN buy happiness -- send the kids to summer camp! So they sent their son Joey away for the season. He was apparently as blissful about the arrangement as his parents, for after about three weeks, they finally received a postcard. Both parents huddled together to read it. After a moment, Joey's mother looked up and commented to her husband, "Well, it certainly is Joey."Through moral stories, the idea is to present the greatness of the humanity. The card read: "Dear Mom and Dad, they are making everyone write home. Love, Joey."At times, families may need some space. They also need togetherness -- lots of it. And those of us who live in families realize that our family is far from perfect, even on the best of days. But perfection is not required for a strong family life. What IS required, according to family expert Nick Stinnett (USA Today, 1-29-86) are three basics. God's Embroidery
2007-09-17 05:55:00 When I was a child my mother use to embroider a great deal. I would sit at her knee and look up from the floor and ask what she was doing? She informed me that she was embroidering. I told her that it looked like a mess from where I was. As from the underside I watched her work within the boundaries of the little round hoop that she held in her hand, I complained to her that it sure looked messy from where I sat. Through moral stories, the idea is to present the greatness of the humanity. She would smile at me, look down and gently say, "My child, you go about your playing for a while, and when I am finished with my embroidering, I will put you on my knee and let you see it from my side." I would wonder why she was using some dark threads along with the bright ones and why they seemed so jumbled from my view. A few minutes would pass and then I would hear Mother's voice say, "My child, come and sit on my knee." This I did only to be surprised and thrilled to see a beautiful flo... More About: Embroidery
Afghan Of Life
2007-09-17 05:48:00 It occurs to me that my life really is a fabric of warp - not warped - and weft yarns. (OK, maybe some of them are warped too!) This past Christmas season, I did A LOT of crocheting. Finances had me in a place where a lot of store-bought presents were out of the question. The good part was it forced me to rediscover some talents I had forgotten - namely my ability to crochet. So, I've had yarn on the brain for three months, and this meditation is the result. Through moral stories, the idea is to present the greatness of the humanity. If I were designing the afghan of my life, I would choose it to be all beautiful colors, with some shiny Lurex yarns crocheted through the piece. But it's not. It's not like the scarves and afghan and booties I made for friends and family over the Christmas season. Through moral stories, the idea is to present the greatness of the humanity.Sure, it has a lot of beautiful colors, and some glittering threads along the way. But it also has dark threads a... Take What You Have and Make What You Want
2007-09-17 05:46:00 As we enter this new year, we all want to change our lives for the better. The question is, how? There are two ways you can change your life: (1) Change your conditions; and (2) Change your mind. Sometimes you can change your conditions. Always you can change your mind. Ultimately, mastering your mind yields far more success and reward than rearranging conditions. Wondrous Mystery
More articles from this author:2007-09-15 06:09:00 Sometimes fact is more mysterious than fiction! The "Denver Post" printed an article December 23, 1981 about a stranger-than-fact event that occurred in Colorado.Stan Sieczkowski heard in church about a Denver family facing a rather bleak Christmas holiday. Medical bills robbed them of any extras; they would not even have a tree.Through moral stories, the idea is to present the greatness of the humanity. So Stan and his son Jay determined to get them that tree. They headed up into the Colorado Rockies in the family pickup. However, the truck skidded off the icy road and hit a boulder that shattered the windshield.
