Time to resolve some conflicts
2007-10-16 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/8/2352 23:16We just arrived at the Crimean System. This is where the rendezvous is supposed to occur. So far our luck has held and no Vinak have followed us this far into the string of dead systems. We're still half a day from the planet, or rather, moon, where we are supposed to meet. Thankfully, It looks like we're going to be about a day early. The crew could probably use an entire day of stressless waiting. I'm sure once we have a new commander and some new crew he'll be putting us to round-the-clock work. New COs love testing their crew. It's a tactic to build comradery amongst the crew. Force them to achieve something they thought wasn't possible. I was thinking about the fact that I'll soon have to report everything that's happened to a superior officer, I figured it's time to start covering my ass. I had 8 of the 9 dumb crewman released from the brig. They're going to be serving food and cleaning in addition to their normal duti...

Report: Earth under Vinak Control
2007-10-16 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/7/2352 21:33I slept well last night for the first time in a while. No Vinak battlecruisers have found us in this dead system. A couple days ago I asked Ensign Creyer if he'd been monitoring the civilian communications. After I asked he froze and got wide-eyed and replied, "N-No Sir." I couldn't help but smile. "It's alright Creyer, I never asked you too. I just thought that you might have." "No sir, I haven't. Would you like me to start?" He asked. "Yes, I'd like to know what's going on." I told him. Fast forward to less than 2 days later and Creyer sent me a whole report on Earth en events. I like over achievers: The Vinak ambassador known as Jonas has named himself "Governor", but has left the current human government in place. Politically, the Assembly, Prime Minister, and President retain their current power; however, Jonas retains the right to veto any laws or actions as well as unilaterally pass decrees on his sole authority. His first...

Escape from Volga
2007-10-15 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/7/2352 03:23I am awesome. This ship is pretty good too, but I am awesome. Our escape from the Volga System was a picture of perfection. There we were heading full speed to the Aquarius warp point and only one Vinak ship guarding it. Lee and Steele maneuvered our ship so that our cannons were aimed right at it. We went from stealth mode to battle mode and fired the cannons. Whoever was monitoring tactical on that Vinak ship probably didn't even have time so sound the alarm. The high power lasers tore through the Vinak ship's hull destroying it. I'm sure some of the other Vinak ships started chasing us, but we slipped though the warp point too quickly to know. Once we were in the Aquarius system we activated our stealth and headed for the next warp point. We didn't need to activate our stealth though. We left the system 20 minutes later and still no Vinak ships had followed us into the system. We left the Aquarius system and have now entered the...

Kramble Vs. Romanov: Round 1
2007-10-13 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/6/2352 20:08As I was saying before. My last conversation with Romano v should've been the end of my headache with Basic Crew Services. Instead, a few hours later Acting Ensign Chavez was on the line with the Command Center. "Captain, I think you should come down here... and fast", he said. "Where's 'here', Chavez"? "BCS office. Things-" I interrupted him, "Is Peter Romanov there?" "Yeah, he-" I interrupted him again, "I'll be right there. Chou out". I looked at Miller, get a security detail together and then double time it to the Basic Crew Services office. He told me, "Yes Sir", but I didn't have time to try and correct him again. I turned down the power on my boots then ran the half kilometer to the BCS office. Just as I feared, 2 of my Petty Officers were screaming at each other. Each of them had their subordinates standing behind them egging 'em on, 3 for Romanov and 4 for Kramble,. Joan Kramble and Peter Romanov were standing less...

Kramble Vs. Romanov: Refereed by Alex Chou
2007-10-12 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/6/2352 20:03I can't believe this. I should be worried about dodging Vinak patrols instead I'm dodging punches from my fellow shipmates. The last battle broke more than our Active Camo and weapons. Some of our basic life systems like water, waste, and heat were damaged. From the moment I started looking into the problems with Basic Crew Services I regretted not deciding to ignore it. First, after looking at all of the complaints I contacted the Petty Officer in charge of it, Joan Kramble . When I asked her what the problem was she whined that she didn't have a high enough rank to do her job. She was replacing a Chief Petty Officer. That is one of the most common tactics people use to try and squeeze out an undeserved promotion. Instead of offering a promotion, I told her that she'd have to deal. I then asked if she could use more people. She told me that she was already borrowing some people while they try and get a hold of the situation. I as...

Alex Chou's Log for: 1/6/2352 4:03Well, I didn't have to wake up Dr. Moore. Dr... um... I already forgot his name. Well anyway's Dr. Whats-his-face was in the infirmary. He gave me some meds to take a chem nap and told me to follow up with Dr. Moore sometime tomorrow. The Meds worked just as they're supposed too. I got 2 hours of sleep and yet I feel like I've had 8 or more. The problem is is that it isn't even close to morning yet. To pass some time I pulled up a tactical view of the Volga System on my PID. To be honest, after seeing it on the main view in the Command Center, it's just not the same. Now that I've used the larger view the tiny interface of my PID just isn't as fun. Maybe I should just get up and go to the Command Center. Looking at my messages, it looks like there's already a lot of things on my "to-do" list. I always knew that being an officer meant having to resolve issues among your subordinates, but I didn't realize how much worse it g...

Can't sleep 2.0
2007-10-10 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/5/2352 23:53I can't believe this. Here I am again unable to get any sleep. It's almost midnight and I still haven't slept a wink. Instead, my mind has been wandering from random thought to random thought. I've been wondering about what's happening on Earth and all the other Human planets now that the Vinak are in complete control. I'm especially interested in what's going on in my home planet of Mars. I should have Comm monitor communications to get an idea of what's going on. I've also been thinking about how many forces we're going to find at the rendezvous point. If I had to guess it's going to mostly be fighters, and some freighters. Maybe a few BattleCruisers that the HAF hid away. Right now I'm assuming there will be plenty of high ranking officers there trained in... in... whatever the hell they're planning to do to "free the human race". If that is the case I'll be relieved of command quickly. A ship this large is never com...

Alex Chou's Log for: 1/5/2352 7:58I didn't get any sleep last night. Even after my room was cleaned up I still couldn't get back to sleep. My alarm went off at 0600. I forced myself into my magnetic boats. I cleaned myself up and put on my uniform. Then, with a few minutes to spare I decided to lay back down for a minute. In a blink of an eye that one minute became an hour. When I woke up, my PID was blaring telling me I had someone trying to contact me. I picked it up and read that it was the Command Center. I hit the answer button and said, "This is lieutenant Chou." Then, Ensign Ronald Creyer, the comm officer(see, I'm starting to learn their names), his face appeared on my screen. "Captain, you asked to be notified when we're approaching the Vinak patrol routes." he said. He said flatly with his eyes staring off to the side. If I didn't know better, I'd say he was reading that sentence. "Yes. And?" I replied quickly. I sounded more annoyed than I meant too...
Late Night Comedy of Errors
2007-10-04 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/5/2352 2:52What a fucking night and it's not even over yet. As if the news about losing another shipmate wasn't bad enough. My stomach flu from earlier has gone into after-burn mode. First I puked. Which I had never done while in space. It was... not something I want to do again. First, I didn't have enough time to make it to the bathrooms. So, I used a bag. Well, it's hard to aim at 0 g. Not everything made it in the bag. So then I tried to capture it in the bag. Instead, more of my innards escaped the bag then made it in. So, I had to tie that off and get another bag to get the rest. The second bag was working better since it was empty. However, after I got about half of my escaped stomach contents captured, the bag caught the corner of my brother's picture frame. The frame didn't have a lot of magnetic power holding it to my desk so the picture frame went flying across the room and the glass shattered when it hit the wall. So now, at...

Alex Chou's Log for: 1/5/2352 0:32I was woken up a few minutes ago by Dr. Moore. Carlyle has died. I thanked the doc for letting me know. Hm... I thought I'd have more to say than that. After I rinse out the leftover taste of vomit, I'm going to see if I can get some more sleep before morning. System Command: End log

Accident
2007-09-29 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/4/2352 20:52There was an accident. A technician, Elizabeth Carlyle, is laying unconscious in the surgery room. Neither Dr. Moore nor his surgeon would say whether they thought she'd make it. For days now there's been technicians all over the Constant's hull. The Vinak are already heavily patrolling the inner orbits of the Volga System. The goal is to finish replacing the rest of our Active Camo panels before reaching their patrol routes. I ordered that the repairs go forward while the Active Camo was activated. That's against regulations. I am positive that it is because everyone keeps reminding me of it: Steele, Quid, every random engineer or technician that I talk too. I never changed my mind and still haven't. If we turn off our Active Camo, the Vinak will detect us. It's as simple as that. Of course, we could just leave the hull in tatters and take the long way around the System to avoid the patrols. In any other situation that is what...

2007-09-15 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/2/2352 20:09Our main Engine is finally online and the Constant is finally heading back towards the Volga system instead of away from it. It couldn't have happened a moment too soon. I finally got around to plotting our course to rendezvous with the rest of the surviving H.A.F. ships and soldiers. There are 3 different locations with different dates and times to meet up with the rest of the forces and we're barely going to make the last point. All of the meet up points are in orbit of lifeless planets in uninteresting solar systems that we had claimed and maintained only because no one else wanted them. I guess the thinking is that the Vinak wouldn't bother patrolling those systems. Our final orders from Earth were actually pretty well thought out. Which isn't something I can say for most of the strategic decision made by our leaders. Like when they decided to abandoned the Joice System of supposedly "low" strategic value to better protect our m...

Crew Juggling
2007-09-04 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/1/2352 20:17This morning I had a hard time getting out of my bunk. Maybe it was the grogginess of getting 8 hours of sleep for the first time in 2 weeks. After turning off my alarm I just laid in bed for 20 minutes thinking about everything that needs to get done. I have to look over the fleet rendezvous times and locations, status update on the engines, learning more people's names, individual funeral services, status update on the Active Camo, supplies check, entire system check, personnel check, personnel reviews. After making my way to the Command Center, I still had no idea what to do first. When I walked into the Command Center and looked around, the place looked abandoned. Miller was at the security station and that was it. He stood up and snapped to attention when he saw me. "Captain on deck!" Normally I wouldn't have been able to keep from laughing at the ridiculousness of a crewman announcing the Captain's arrival to an empty Command ...

Alex Chou's Log for: 12/31/2351 6:00This Active Camo may quite possible be the only thing that Earth's Engineers have ever done right. We fired our bright-bursts, launched all of our rockets so that they exploded near our ship, then activated our Active Camo, released our decoy debris, and finally used our thrusters to slightly alter our trajectory. It worked without a single bug. We just kept one side of our ship angled towards the Vinak and we were never detected. They found our decoy space debris almost right away. One of the ships captured the debris while the other 11 went into different directions. It was hard to position our ship so that the same side was always facing all 12 ships. Fortunately, we kept them all within the same 180 degrees and were never detected. After a couple hours the Vinak ships stopped searching and took off back towards the center of the Volga system. This was probably the first bit of good luck we've had in the last hellish two weeks and I...
Crew Assembled, Plan Ready
2007-08-02 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 12/30/2351 20:33The command center stations have been filled out. I had to write down the names and stations of everyone. I'll try to remember them eventually. It doesn't really matter for now, I'll probably just call out the station names instead of the person's names. I always hated it when a Captain or Commander did that. I mean seriously, are you really so important that you can't remember the names of your command center crew? Looks like I'm going to have to be a jerk until I have time to remember the list. Anyways, to evade our Vinak friends we're going to try and pretend to blow ourselves up. I think my plan is pretty brilliant. I'm going to use Bright-Bursts first to confuse the Vinak sensors, then use the rockets to create a large explosion just off our hull, then flip on our active camo. After that we'll create the illusion of ship debris by venting into space all replaced parts and other useless pieces of matter laying around. The ...

I'm leading them into futility
2007-07-22 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 12/30/2351 12:33I am in deep trouble. Those Vinak ships are less than 12 hours away and our main engines still aren't online. It would take more than 20 hours to replace them. Instead I've moved everyone to get this ship ready for another battle. Fortunately, when Earth supplied us last they gave us more weapons than anything else. Replacing the lasers and reloading the rockets is easy. Now the outer armor panels is another story. I've never seen anything so maddening to work on. Take a 2 meter by 2 meter panel and align it down to the micrometer on all 360 degrees. I've got the crew working on just one side of the ship. If my idea pans out we'll need a whole side to be operational. If not, well, let's hope we can keep that side of the ship facing the Vinak. I still need to assemble a full crew for the command center. System Command: End Log

2007-07-18 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 12/29/2351 23:12I just got back from a brief funeral that honored all of the fallen crew members before releasing their bodies into space. I'd never done a eulogy for anyone let alone one for over 150 people. With no prep time I had to make one up on the spot. I stumbled my way through with some mentions of "honor", "duty", and "carrying on". Then I promised that there would be an individual memorial service for each member once our current crisis was over. Which, I thought is what's normally expected. Afterwards, is when Steele told me that my promise to the crew wasn't really needed. It's not really expected, nor even customary to do so. I wish she would've told me that beforehand. Before going back to repairs, I've decided to give myself a nap. Right now I've got people crawling all over the inside and outside of the ship trying to get all of our primary engines online. We've got most of our maneuvering thrusters responding, but we'll nee...

I'm alive
2007-07-12 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 12/29/2351 11:23I don't really have time for logs, but I just need to collect my thoughts. Just two days... wait, no three, well a little over 2 days. The days have all just run together for me. 2 days ago I thought that I'd be dead by now, but here I am still going. I wish I could say the same for the rest of the crew. 152 people were killed in the fight. I'm still trying to piece together everything thats happened. 2 days ago we were ready to carry out our suicidal distraction plan so that the other Guerrilla Cruisers could escape from the Sol System. Less than an hour before execution time all of the Vinak battle cruisers suddenly left their patrol routes and converged on the position of the Cruisers we were supposed to help escape. I have to guess that they were somehow detected by the Vinak They were soon surrounded and attacked. We were on the other side of the solar system and couldn't help our brethren. At this point the plan changed. E...

Alex Chou's Log for: 12/26/2351 20:22In the latest briefing I and the rest of the Senior officers were told that everything's in place. At 0300 the Constant will be picking a fight she can't win, and, unfortunately, I'm still be on her. I've been overworking my brain trying to devise a way off this doomed ship. At the last briefing, The Captain told us what a fine crew we are and blah blah blah... I nearly laughed out loud when he said it. How cliche`. At the briefing, Commander Pierre asked, "Can the crew record a message to any family? We can send them before going into battlemode." Captain Harris refused, "It's too risky. We could give away our position and plan. I'm sorry, but this is too important to risk anything like that. Chou, keep our communications locked down to just myself, Pierre, and the Command Center." The Captain could tell from my reaction that that order really worried me; however, he was completely wrong when he guessed why. "Chou, you look ...

Dead ship flying
2007-06-24 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 12/25/2351 20:11They're going to do it. I can't believe it, but they're actually going to do it. One ship is going to be "exceptionally endangered", in other words, sacrificed, so that the other Stealthed ships can escape. And guess who's going to be sacrificed? Us. Yeah, that makes perfect sense, let's sacrifice the newest most advanced ship because "it's had the most problems since going into the fight". Apparently single handedly taking out those 3 Vinak cruisers wasn't good enough for them. The plan is pretty basic. We're going to flip from Active Camo to battle mode and try to draw away Vinak Cruisers from one of the warp points. When that happens the other cruisers slip past and get out of the Sol System and can rendezvous with any other Human Forces that still exist. The warp point we're going to target is the Carnegie System Warp point. It's one of 3 Human systems that the Vinak couldn't conquer without conquering Earth first. I p...

Prisoner in our own System
2007-06-14 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 12/24/2351 20:09I've had some time to think finally since there hasn't been much to do for a while. It's been 3 days since we were sent off on our "mission" and so far we're still stuck in the Sol System . The Vinak are guarding every warp point that we could utilize to get out of here. That's the bad news. The good news is that our Active Camo is working perfectly. As far as we can tell neither the Constant nor the other 4 Guerrilla Cruisers have been detected floating around the Sol System. We're all just hoping that an opportunity arrives where we can successfully run a warp point. There's no official definition of what it means to "run" a warp point, but pretty much it means trying to go through a wormhole that's defended by an enemy force. I've never been involved with "running" a warp point. John told me that a he was part of a group of pilots that had to do it. Apparently while defending a system, I think it was the Newton system, they ...
