Alex Chou's Log for: 1/25/2352 12:32This morning I had a brilliant idea. Before going to the command center I stopped by the infirmary and talked to Dr. Moore. I told him to start doing psych evaluations of everyone: Officers and crew, Fleet and marine. When he asked why I made up something about recent events being tough and "taking a toll" on everyone. He complained about already being understaffed. I pretended to listen and then told him to "make it happen" anyway. "Who should I start with?" he asked. "Do it alphabetically by last name. That way people will know that we're not discriminating", I told him as I left. What I left out was that it would mean that Cortez would be among the first to undergo an evaluation. With any luck he'll be found unfit and the good Doctor can take him off duty. I was on my way to the Command Center when I saw Cortez in the corridor. He was about 15 meters away and talking to Lieutenant Taylor. His back was to me so I don't think...

Alex Chou's Log for: 1/24/2352 20:24I spent most of the day in the command center. I tried to read over various reports, but I couldn't concentrate. I couldn't stop thinking about Cortez and hoping that whatever his problem is, it would just go away. Unfortunately, Cortez again proved it was hopeless. Late in the afternoon Cortez showed up in the Command Center. Nobody spoke. Nobody moved. Nobody breathed. Oblivious to the tension, he swaggered to the center of the room and flipped on a display. I know he's a dumb marine, but you'd think that even he could feel every eyeball in the room staring at him. In the silence, I thought I heard a gun being unholstered. I turned around and looked at Miller. His eyes were fixated on Cortez. I noticed a facial tick in his right cheek. Miller broke his glance long enough to look at me. I shook my head "no". When I turned back around I heard the sound of a gun being holstered. Mike Quid was the first to speak. "Capta...

Alex Chou's Log for: 1/24/2352 12:23On the way to meet Steele I saw 2 marines walking around with firearms at their side. I stopped walking and stared at them. My gut filled with dread. I gave security of the ship over to Cortez's marines. Who knows how many at any one time could be armed. What would happen if Steele and I went through with a plan to remove Cortez from duty? Before, if Cortez resisted and ordered his marines to help, the worse we would face would be some shouting and blows being exchanged. Now... who knows. I shared the thought when I met with Steele this morning. "Chou, if we aren't careful, we could have a possible fire fight breaking out", Steele whispered. She was staring at me from across a table she set up. "As dumb as marines are, I can't imagine them firing on humans, let alone fellow members of the military", I whispered back. We met in Steele's quarters which, like mine, the walls are sound proof. So, once again, I don't know why we we...

Alex Chou's Log for: 1/23/2352 11:45I was just about to fall asleep. My eyes were closed and i had just gotten comfortable. Next thing I know, BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM... I was startled out of my sleep and woke up yelling. The door opened and Steele ran in with her weapon drawn. Here eyes were darting around the room. "What is it? What's going on?" My eyes were fixed on her. "What the hell are you doing?", I shouted. Steele lowered her handgun and looked at me. "I heard you yelling. I thought that you might be in trouble." "I was yelling because a crazy second lieutenant was banging on my door in the middle of the god damn night." Steele lowered her weapon. "Sorry. I... Sorry." "What are you doing here?" Steele closed the door to my quarters before responding. "It's about Cortez". I climbed out of my sleeping bag and started putting on my boots. "What about him?" "He. is. out. of. his. fucking. mind." Steele enunciated each syllable fully and loudly as if t...

Alex Chou's Log for: 1/23/2352 19:53Since Cortez came aboard, it seems everyday follows the same pattern. Good stuff happens, more good stuff happens, and then Cortez happens. Today was no different. Chavez's funeral services went well. People who knew them spoke well and before I knew, it was over. A little later another one. Even though they were all fairly low-ranked I asked all officers not on duty to attend. To their credit, all of them did. More good news came today when I found out the Vinak ambush was withdrawing. One of Cortez's pilots was reporting that they were leaving the system. Once they're all gone we're outta here. It was when I was reading that report that Cortez struck. While reading it I heard Mike Quid behind me say, "uh... Captain?" I turned around and saw Quid with an arm that wasn't his around his neck and a gun to his head. The owner of the gun had his face hidden behind Quid's head. "Shit!", I shouted. That got everyone else's atte...

Commander Cortez acting like... Commander Cortez
2007-12-06 20:01:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/22/2352 19:45I couldn't put the funeral services off anymore. Chavez has been hounding me constantly. I cracked and told him to plan them if he's so interested. Well, he did. He's been busy working away and planning. He's already got the first 10 services planned for tomorrow. We'll see how they go. As far as our thief problem, I'm trying to keep a lid on it. I told Miller to install the camera without telling him why. The only other person I've told is Cortez. I can keep an eye out for suspicious fleet crew, but i figured he'd be better at identifying a suspicious marine. Unfortunately, he responded in his usual way: completely irrational. We were alone in his quarters when I told him. I found him floating on his back reading something on his PID - probably another book on war. "Why do you think it's a marine that's doing it?", he asked. "I didn't say it was. I said-" "Then why should I be suspicious of my men?" "I'm just ask...

Alex Chou and the Case of the Missing Meds
2007-12-03 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/21/2352 21:45This is strange. Dr. Moore today told me that he's convinced that somebody is stealing the meds needed for a chem nap. "It's slow and gradual, but they are disappearing - for maybe 2 weeks", he said. I asked him to redo his inventory. There could've been a miscount I reasoned. "I already did that", he snapped. "I did it last week too. Last week we were short 3 doses and this week we're short another 7." "Why would someone steal them?", I asked. "It would be like stealing Aspirin. Just ask and you always give them." "Almost always", he corrected. "Could someone on your staff not be keeping proper records?" I was having a difficult time believing someone would steal something that's so readily available. "You see that pile over there?" He pointed to a group of small needles stacked in a basket. They were labeled with a long latin word. Underneath it in smaller print were the words "sleep inducers". "Last night, I counted....

More Proof I'm Always Right
2007-11-30 21:39:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/21/2352 18:45The stealth fighters reported back their findings. There is an ambush waiting for us on the other side of both warp points. I guess they learned from our Volga escape. If it hadn't been for the fact that we sent our fighters ahead of us, we could've fallen for the trap. You know, this has got to be the third or maybe even the fourth time I've saved the Constant from Commander Cortez's foolishness, but does Cortez acknowledge it? No! He acts like it's my fault that the Vinak have us trapped. He was in his quarters when I told him the bad news. "Damn it Chou, why are the Vinak still looking for us?" I didn't respond. I just rolled my eyes. I didn't even care if he saw it. I've noticed that I keep seeing more and more of "angry Cortez" and less of "eerily nice Cortez", and I'm getting sick of it. I convinced him to wait a couple more days before we make our move. Maybe by then the Vinak will get bored and leave. After all...

2007-11-28 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/20/2352 20:19Hot Damn, we did it! It's taken us almost 3 days of 'round-the-clock drills, but we did it. This crew and ship can be ready for combat in 1 minute and 53 seconds. After Creyer was keeping the time and after he announced the prep time everyone in the command center cheered. I cast a brief glance at Cheng and Steele during the celebrating. Earlier in the morning Lee and Steele started openly questioning if it was possible to meet my 2 minute goal. It's very satisfying to be proven correct. In the afternoon I received some more good news. It appears that the Vinak had all but given up on their search for us. All of their patrols were leaving and only a couple ships remained behind. Looks like my 1 week prediction came true a day early. I was in the Command Center when Chavez reported the good news. Unfortunately, so was Cortez. He wanted us to immediately dash for the exit. I, of course, had to be the smart one. I told him,"Don...

Alex Chou's Log for: 1/19/2352 20:39My first semester at University was the hardest for me. I was only there because I didn't know where else to go. Most of the people there were nice, but I soon found out that not everyone understood my traditionalist upbringing. My beliefs got me into a lot of trouble. The first time it happened was on the first day of my first class. It was an early Earth history class. The professor kept going on and on about different gender roles and how it's so different from today's equality. I didn't understand. So I asked, "What's wrong with having different 'roles'? And why would a guy marry someone that wanted to be my equal." Well, that pretty much set the entire class on fire. I was told how humans have "moved" beyond that thinking. The rest of the semester was all about how silly and backwards Alex Chou was. At one point, someone suggested they all visit the martian village where I grew up. "So they could study 'ancient cultu...

2007-11-21 20:09:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/19/2352 2:39I've discovered the secret to becoming the most hated person on a spaceship. Step 1: Wait until everyone who outranks you dies and become Captain by default. Step 2: Change around people's roles without asking for their input. Step 3: Work your crew to the breaking point and possibly even death. Step 4: Change peoples roles around -- again! Step 5: Run a standard drill. Step 6: Berate your crew for doing poorly. Step 7: Run the drill 5 more times. Step 8: Tell everyone no more drills until tomorrow. Step 9: Completely unnanounced, run the drill 30 minutes after midnight. Step 10: When someone complains, tell them that, "technically" it is tomorrow. That about does it. I'm now probably the most hated person on the H.A.F. Constant today and I did it all before breakfast! System Command: End Log

Keep drilling until it's right
2007-11-20 20:46:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/18/2352 19:25How many times does a person have to do something before they get it right? So far, the answer is more than 6. Running the exact same drill 6 times and people still don't know where to go or what to do. Our response time is still almost 10 minutes. All I can say is that we've been lucky that we've picked the time and place of our battles instead of the Vinak. I told everyone to pack it in. No more drills for the day. We would start again tomorrow. What I didn't point out is that 0030 is technically tomorrow. The crew, and maybe even some of my officers might hate me, but if this crew really is going to start a human resistance, it needs to be ready for battle at a moment's notice. One good thing is that Cortez I haven't had to talk to Cortez all day. As it turns out, Cortez's marines are as ill-prepared as the fleet crew. In between each drill I've heard him screaming at his people. He's so busy putting people into their ...

Trouble
2007-11-16 17:35:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/18/2352 9:37Yikes! We are in trouble. We just ran a battle readiness drill. The damage control teams weren't sure where to go. Some sections had double or even triple coverage while others had none and It seemed like nobody knew where their equipment was. Our elite fighting force marines panicked when some of their guns had a (simulated) malfunction. When we finally sealed and compartmentalized the different ship sections, people got trapped because they didn't have the updated mobility codes. The worse part was that all of the panic made the general comm channel a garbled, incomprehensible mess. After a bit I just couldn't take it anymore. We were 20 minutes into the drill and we still weren't at full battle ready status. If an admiral had been around to see this disgrace I, and the rest of the officers would've been thrown in jail for gross negligence. I ordered the alert level down. Once the comm traffic subsided I got on the intercom an...

Alex Chou's Log for: 1/17/2352 20:14You know I really thought that I'd get a chance to relax this week. With the Vinak pointlessly trying to search the system for us, I figured there'd be nothing much to do. Boy was I wrong. Steele asked if I had anything to keep the crew busy while we wait. At first I shook my head no. I wanted everyone to have a chance to relax. Then I reconsidered. With all the staff changes, I decided that running some drills couldn't hurt. Steele, for some reason, was thrilled with the idea. She immediately started working on different scenarios to "keep the crew on their tows". That's when Chavez had to chime in. "What about funeral details?" Until that point, I had completely forgotten about my promise to have an individual service for each fallen member. I really don't want to do it, but I'll be damned if I break a promise. "In between drills we can start", I told him. I figured 2 major projects for the week was enough for the crew ...

Raising Expectations
2007-11-12 14:26:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/17/2352 11:02Does that guy ever sleep? Commander Cortez claims to have read the service files of all the ships officers. Those things are the size of epic novels. I have a hard time believing he's read more than a dozen of them in the last 5 days. I have to admit though, he appears to have known what was in mine. The moment I walked into the Command Center at 0700 he ambushed me with a barrage of facts directly from my service file. "Alex!", he said, "you don't give yourself enough credit." I stared at him for a moment while I tried to figure out what the heck he was talking about. "You said you didn't know much about guerrilla warfare. I read your service file last night. Your background was custom made for it." I'd nearly forgotten about that. Steele was at her station and responded before I could. "Really?" "Oh yeah", Cortez said with a smile. He then proceeded to go over a list of relevant courses I'd taken in my lifetime. "Chou, I ...

Alex Chou's Log for: 1/16/2352 20:00They aren't even proper jarheads, they're a buncha prissy pilots. -Steven MillerYesterday, when I told Miller about reducing his security force, he didn't take the news very well. "You're gonna let a buncha jarheads protect the ship? ", he said. "They aren't even proper jarheads, they're a buncha prissy pilots." It was the most emotion I'd seen from him since... well... ever. The problem was that we had the conversation in the Command Center in full hearing range of Cortez's XO, Lieutenant Taylor. Well, he must have told Cortez because Cortez spent all morning in the Command Center trying to convince everyone how great marines are. I arrived at the Command Center at 0700 and Cortez was already there. He was talking to Miller loudly. "I know you're about to leave. But let me ask you one more question, Steve. Did you know that when the United Human Government was founded, the first thing they did was create and fund a Marine Corp...

Marines work fast
2007-11-07 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/15/2352 20:14Two strange things happened today. The first one was that Cortez actually had a good idea. He caught me on the way to the Command Center this morning. He suggested that he and his marines take over ship's security. "That could free up people to work at some of your understaffed areas", he suggested. I was about to tell him that "I'd have to be dumber than a Trojan accepting a Greek gift to agree to that". Instead, I paused and thought about it for a moment. I don't want marines in charge of policing my crew, but we are really short on manpower. I countered with a suggestion of a divided plan: One where Miller, with a greatly reduced staff, would continue to take care of internal security. In the event of an external security breach, however, Cortez's marines would be in charge of defending the ship. Cortez didn't say anything right away. I could tell by the look on his face that he was disappointed. "I'd need a marine in the Com...

Cortez Vs. Me: Round 2
2007-11-02 13:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/14/2352 20:41I had Cort ez meet me in our strategy room. From the front of the room I turned on the holo display. I showed a 3D still image of the tactical layout of the system. Vinak ships included. Cortez was on the opposite side of the display just watching. He had a big smile plastered across his face. "So what's the plan?", he asked. "huh?" "The plan. To get out of the system." "That's Kind of the reason I asked you here." I picked up a holo pen. "Great! What is it?" I took a deep breath. I've never briefed a superior officer about anything other than repair or maintenance schedules. "Here's the situation. There are over 52 Vinak ships guarding the system. 36 are wasting their fuel by patrolling the system. 3 at the entrance of both warp points and, according to your pilots, 5 more each on the exit side of the warp points. Therefore, any attempt to blast through would be impossible. We would be able to make a run past the 3, but...

Alex Chou's Log for: 1/14/2352 11:32The fighter reports came back. They both reported that 3 Vinak cruisers were guarding the other side of each warp point. That is a lot of cruisers to try and blast through. I've decided to try and convince Cortez to change his orders to leave the system. If he's still in as subdued mood as he was last night, this should be easy. I went to his quarters only to find a handwritten note on his door. "At 1100 hours all Marine s are too report to the exercise room for drill." I rolled my eyes. I then made my way to the exercise room. I got to the room and beheld a sight to be seen. All the marines were running around the room in sync. I could tell by the noise that the gravity on their boots had been turned up. They were all running in sync with each other. He had half the guys running up the port side wall, across the ceiling, down the starboard side wall, across the floor and then repeating the circle. Meanwhile, the other half were runn...

Alex Chou's Log for: 1/13/2352 20:05I think Cortez is bipolar and off his meds or something. I went to Cortez's quarters this morning. I knocked and the door opened a moment later. I walked in and found Cortez floating in midair, reading his PID. "I want to use 2 of your fighters for scouting", I blurted out. "Of course", he said without looking up. "I want them to sneak through each warp point to see if there's any Vinak ships on the other side." Still staring at his PID he asked, "I already said yes. What else do you need?" "Waiting for the scout reports may take some time.", I said. I paused before continuing. "I won't be able to meet your 48 hour requirement." I stared at his face looking for his reaction. "That's fine. I'll inform Lieutenant Taylor to prepare 2 of the fighters." "Thank you", I said. I stood there for a few seconds. Considering our last... disagreement, I was hesitant to ask anything remotely antagonistic. "Is there something else, Lieute...

Cortez Vs. Chou: Round 1
2007-10-29 13:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/12/2352 20:21I must have floated in my bunk wide awake for hours last night. I must have fallen asleep at one point because I was awoken by my alarm. I made my way to the Command Center. Miller was there with some other crewman and Junior officers. I turned the tactical layout of the system. I was studying the routes of the patrols. One looked like his patrol route would bring them close to us. I was about to order moving the ship further into space when Cort ez showed up. "Lieutenant, what's our status?" he asked. I took a deep breath. It helped to resist the urge to give a sarcastic answer. "There are 37 Vinak ships in the system. 3 guarding each of the warp points and the other 31 are searching the area. One of the patrol routes will soon come close to us, I'm- " "How do you know that?", he asked. I then spent 15 minutes slowly explaining to him the search patterns I'd witnessed. Instead, he was mobbed by nearly 100 marines rushing past me to shake his hand, pat him on the back, and go "who-ra!". The whole time Cortez just smiled and kept saying, "What I tell ya? What I tell ya?". I'll never understand marines. He made his way over to me. He looked at me and said, "Chou?" I nodded my head yes. "Lieutenant-Commander Phillipe Cortez requesting permission to board." "Lieutenant Alex Chou, commanding officer, granting it. Welcome aboard Commander." I hate formalities like that. If he didn't have permission to come aboard I'd have his butt in chains by now. "It's good to be aboard. We've had a long, tough journey, Lieutenant. It's good to have a reason to celebrate." "Of course", I said, "I'd be interested to hear all about it." That was a lie. "But first, you must be exhausted. I had some quarters prepared-". ...

Alex Chou's Log for: 1/11/2352 15:34When I woke up from my chem nap, I was in a great mood. After all, we were on our way to rendezvous with my new Commanding Officer. Once Cortez comes aboard he'll be the highest ranking officer. I figured he'd take command of the Constant and I could go back to finding a way off this doomed mission without being hung for treason. My good mood soon ended. While waiting to meet up with Cortez, I arranged to meet some of his pilots. I had Chief Miller gather up the 3 most senior members we had on board. I wanted to meet them in our shuttle bay to discuss salvaging some of their bent up fighters. I made my way down to shuttle control. As soon as I walked in, Chief Miller introduced everybody. In spite of the introduction, I don't remember their names or ranks. I was too fixated on their uniforms. Instead of proper, red uniforms that are worn by all fleet pilots, officers, and crewman, they had on the unmistakably dull grey uniforms w...

Alex Chou's Log for: 1/11/2352 01:48The time of the rendezvous point was to be exactly 20 days since receiving our final orders and was to take place in the orbit of Crimean 3's only moon. That is exactly where we made contact with a wing of stealth fighters. We didn't even know they were there until we received an "Ahoy" message on the radio from their Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Commander Phillipe Cortez. I then contacted him on the closed military network. "This is Lieutenant Chou of the H.A.F. Constant. Commander, are you incompetent or ignorant? Stay on the closed network", I yelled into the communicator. "Our orders were clear, Lieutenant", he emphasized my rank to remind me I was talking to a superior. "We were to assume the closed network was compromised and make contact via radio only." "Commander, there is an entire fleet of Vinak warships hiding behind the Crimean star and as soon as your radio message reaches them, they're going to know we're here." Tha...

Preparing for Battle
2007-10-19 14:00:00
Alex Chou's Log for: 1/10/2352 02:12We are totally screwed! There is an entire fleet of Vinak ships hiding on the other side of the Crimean Star. I don't know how, but they must have found out the rendezvous point. If we hadn't searched the system, we would've been destroyed when turning off of our stealth at the designated time. I've ordered Lee to search the rest of the system, and quickly. I'm keeping the ship on alert level 2. We could end up in battle at any moment. Everyone is back on chem naps so we can stay at the highest alerts possible. If any HAF ships show up, we'll warn them to run and, if necessary, help them fight off the Vinak. The Vinak fleet is way too big for us to hope to take on, but we can't just stand by while they ambush unsuspecting HAF ships. For now I'm going to steal a 30 minute chem nap with some of the other crew. We're going to need the rest. The next 24 hours are going to be interesting. System Command: End Log.

Alex Chou's Log for: 1/9/2352 20:01We arrived at the rendezvous point. We're now orbiting the only moon of Crimean 3. We were also more than a full day early. I guess my previous worring was unnecessary. Ensign Chavez, (who's first name, I finally learned, is George) hasn't detected any other H.A.F. ships in the area. "I guess we're the first ones here." Creyer said. "Maybe, or maybe they're stealthed too." I said. "I could send out an ahoy message to see if anyone's out there." he suggested. "No", I replied, "let's just hold position until the designated time." Steele chimed in, "Chou, we should search the rest of the system, make sure that it's secure".
