Heeeee's Back!
2008-01-27 15:28:00
The Great and Powerful Baba Doodlius is back from his Sabbirdical and wants everyone to come on over and read about his mysterious (what else?) doings over that past few weeks (actually, it's more like years - he's kept some stuff well under wraps for quite some time). I don't know about anyone else, but I was waiting with bated breath for word of my favourite bird friend. Now that he's home, I'm going to tag him to do the 10 for 10 so he may reveal even more deep, dark secrets about himself! I wasn't exactly sure what the "10 for 10" was, so I just tagged 10 people to do 10 random things. You can do that anyway you like - photos, verses, ideas, words - anything that tells us something about you. I'm also tagging my new friend and fellow-poet, STP at Poetic Leanings and a few others I'm dying to know more about: The Unskilled Poet, Nothingman at Poetry, Catsy Carpe Diem, Detroit Dog over at The Dog House, Squirrel Mama at The Squirrel Journal, Frederick at Writer's Therapy...

10 Verses About Me
2008-01-26 14:15:00
I've been tagged in the space of 12 hours, to do 2 memes - first 7 random things about me, and then "10 for 10". Not only that, they want it in verse. I told them I was up for the challenge. I went to bed with some ideas in my head and I was up with the birds this morning to create the following piece for your reading pleasure. So, here goes:Self-ishSome folks want to know a few things about meWhere do I begin? What?s intriguing? let?s see:I can?t start my day if I don?t have a brewOf English, Darjeeling, or Earl Grey, it?s true! But I won?t turn you down if the coffee?s just made;As long as its origin?s truly, Fair Trade.I?ve been on adventures away from my home;To Europe, at sixteen, but not yet to Rome.I?ve travelled around all the lakes of Killarney,And even bent backwards to kiss the Stone, Blarney.I dated a dubious bunch in my youth;Waded, through all sorts of sluggards, uncouth,And finally connected with just the right mate;Through, would you believe it? A telephone date!My f...

More angst poetry from the 80s (what a wild time that was!) This poem, I wrote in my final year of high school. I invited a "friend" over to work on some homework and after we were done studying and he was about to leave, he accosted me on our carpeted stairs in the front hallway (just around the corner from the kitchen where my parents were sitting having a chat) and surprised me with a big wet one!(Photo by Myla Kent)These were my thoughts afterwards.Lack of InterestThe futilityOf his long kiss;Lingering first,Then fillingMy mouthWith tongue. While I,Dwell notOn the passionOf the moment,But on whenI shallOnce more...Breathe.By Kathleen Mortensen (née Davison) © 1980

Death and Glory?
2008-01-24 17:16:00
(Photo, Francis Frith Photographers)BridgEndIt?s just that time of year, they say,When people end it all;Jump off a bridge or slit their wrists--The Reaper pays his call.Still, strange to find a little townOn valley?s edge in Wales;Where kids extreme, just want to die?Leave friends to tell their tales. On websites, postings filled with thoughtsAnd tributes to their dead; They?ve gleaned that death is glorious--From virtual books they?ve read.Stocked up with sweet condolencesOf life and legacy; To top yourself is ?hip? these days?So sad that seems to me.A pop. of forty-thousand headWith seven children lost; It?s only just a year that?s gone?Five hangings has it cost. Some say Bridgend itself?s to blame,?There?s nothing else to do?;It?s nearly normal when it comes?Right now, the next one?s due.Curtail this pact of suicide,Their plot to Rest In Peace;Install controls parental, now--This trend will not soon cease.Kathleen Mortensen © 2008

ShenanigansWhile on a distant holiday to land of patchwork greenI got myself run over, in the town-- Oh! What a scene! It started out all innocent?a madcap game of playThat landed me in hospital by sunset of that day.It was my bright idea tho?-- my brilliant mastermind; While brandishing shillelagh?s, to whack someone?s behind.Don?t get me wrong, I didn?t plan on jumping some unknown;Of course the scheme was always meant for someone of our own.So, there we were in Irish town--the high street, an inclineAnd lay in wait for Uncle Tom with Willy (called Devine).Tucked up inside an alleyway we choked back the guffaws,But naturally, we couldn?t see, the plan was wrought with flaws. Then after some small time had passed our will-pow?r it did fly;We peeked out from our hidey-hole to find they?d passed us by!It happened then, I recollect; although it?s far away;I made a dash into the road forgetting right-of-way.When suddenly before me loomed a rolling, rust sedan; And there behind the steering...

Dovecote*** A dozen doves have dug themselvesA bunker from the cold;Beneath my scrappy bushes blow'nI watch them as they foldTheir streamlined wings of radianceReflecting golden glow;I know they?ll vanish from my viewInto the squalls of snow.As shadows loom, their numbers waneFrom fifteen at the heightOf Sunday?s sunny frozen noon,Ere first of them took flightFrom needled beds laid down by pinesThe wind-whipped days do clout;Brown billiard balls they scatterAs squirrels flush them out.Night gathers round, a chill descendsMy feathered guests have goneInto the dark, I know not whereA fragile branch upon?To weather there the wicked night;Heads huddled in their breastsAnd wake to greet the warm sunshineIf they should so be blessed.Kathleen Mortensen © 2008 ***dovecote
A Little Fun for Friday
2008-01-18 15:06:00
I've been posting a bit of doom and gloom lately, so I thought I'd lighten it up a bit and get back to my usual fun rhymes. Yesterday, I happenend upon a cool blog. While stopping by The Dog House, I came across a poster named SquirrelMama and I had to check her out! She's got a rather new blog called Grey and Red, A Squirrel Journal (I know! Crazy eh?) Anyway, being the squirrel nut that I am meself (my Irish background kicking in there), I was thrilled to find her and left her a nice long comment, to which she graciously replied and stopped by Poetikat's to read my earlier poem, Rococo Squirrels. She enjoyed it very much and I was pleased as punch and this got me motivated to put pen to paper and get this poem (ditty really) down that I had been thinking about for a while. So, for my new mate, SquirrelMama, here's...Orson!Orson SwellsWith every peanut that he?s found,Orson swells. With seed that?s scattered on the ground,Orson swells. He?s rotund as a vat of wine,His butt?s the...

Pricking Your Conscience
2008-01-17 16:55:00
Somewhere Right now, at this point in timeThere's someone out thereCutting themself,Someone being rapedSomeone dying in a car accident,Shooting another human being,Shooting up,Starving to deathCrying quietly, alone,Selling themself for pocket change,Selling someone else. There's somebody stealing a car,Stealing a life--Somewhere in this world.Right at this moment,A baby is dying in its mother's arms,A man is watching another manStrap on an explosive device,A kid is packing a gunIn his backpack,A girl is getting her periodFor the first timeAnd she knows it changes everything.Somewhere, someone is downloadingA compromised, naked child,A woman is looking at a bare cupboardAnd a room full of wailing children,Someone is jumping--Off a bridge, or a building...Somewhere, right now, in this worldAn old man is dying by himselfIn a small, shabby room,A person is looking for a placeTo spend the night,Or holding out a bowl for soupAt a soup kitchen.Somewhere, a child is carrying waterFor mile...

Stream of Consciousness.Hmm. A very odd thing. If you let it run riot it can make you mad. If you ignore it, eventually everything will bubble up to the surface. Or, if you get it down on the page, it can either make you look like a genius, or a babbling idiot. Here's what mine made me do. You decide.Reading a Book My head is spinning; There?s never enough time. The words fly off the pages in a blur.My tea-bagged brain tries to absorb the details,Fails miserably.I want to go on,Distractions keep entering inOccluding my progress.I?m excited!I?m halfway through; the piecesAre coming together.I have ideas about how it all fitsI?m working it out ? that?s the best part!I love this!Back and forth ?Back and forth in time? The Swinging Sixties, the Present Day.My favourite kind of book.I trust my hero, the inspector will put it together.I have so many more books and wordsAwaiting me.On the shelf,Sitting on the floor,At the library?in the bookstore.Waiting, waiting. There?s too many!!!I?ll neve...

No Laughing Matter
2008-01-15 02:08:00
I wrote this poem early in 2007, but had very mixed feelings about it when it was complete. Although it came to me quickly, in the end it felt just so glib and yet, I had been compelled to write it. This dark side of mine that finds some mockery in such a thing as death, I really can't explain it. When the poem was done, I felt two things: I wanted to see if I could get it published since it was brought to life as the result of a news item at the time, but at the same time, I felt it should be buried, just as Lunchbox Louie was about to be buried. My conscience won out. What are your thoughts?Obit For ? Angst Poetry circa 1981
2008-01-11 15:14:00
Digging through my poetic archives, I came across this tortured poem that I wrote in my first year of university back in 1982. I was a student of English Lit and not even remotely athletically inclined. It was odd then, for me to develop a serious crush on a "jock", but I think the reason he unknowingly captured my heart was because he was in my English class and proved to be a literate jock. He was also really cute! This one's for Dale (great name too!) That's my maiden name in the copyright line.Conflict of InterestYou, who live for slopesOf talcum and ice,While I preferThe sun and sand.Rest in a mental file cabinet--Unfinished businessPostponed ?til Monday. You, who make me thrashLike Hardy?s girls,While I attemptTo fall asleep,Never know as you sit by my side--I wrestle my feelingsAnd count to ten. You, who never speakTo mislead,And yet createA ray of hope,Shatter my fantasy--Everytime you sayI?m your best friend.Kathleen Davison © 1982 (Spring)

Cats in Cargo? No!
2008-01-09 18:51:00
I wrote this poem a few months back and was fortunate to have it picked up by Animal Companion Magazine (a great magazine for all you animal lovers). It was published last September. Thought you might enjoy it, even if you don't like cats! The piece was inspired by a news item in The Globe and Mail saying that Air Canada flights would no longer permit small animals in the bodies of planes. This is what I imagined a cat's response would be to the proposal.Advice From a Friend(A letter to Air Canada)Excuse me, for a moment.Allow me, if you please. My name is ?Nanki-Poo?;I?m a purebred Siamese.I?m feeling consternation; With anxiousness I?m fraught;Because of something I?ve just heard,A piece of news I caught.I know it?s just a rumourI?m sure you will dismiss. If true, I?ll have a tantrum,And howl and screech and hiss!So go ahead, I beg you,Unveil this new decreeAbout this smart suggestion madeOf cargo holding me.I really have to smile though,At this smug confidence;Hole me up beside the...

My Underwear!
2008-01-07 14:25:00
A conversation going on over at Linda's blog got into my head and unwittingly inspired this piece.I felt it was time for a little fun in these dull Winter days, so this ought to do it. I feel pretty confident that this has not been written about before--at least not in poetry.Underwear When I was just an infant-childIn diapers was I wrappedNot ?Huggies? then, nor ?Pampers?,But cloth, that often flappedThus, rubber pants enclosed themAround my chubby thighsTo keep emissions well-secureAnd ward off pesky flies.Once potty-trained, I moved on upTo world of lace and frillsWith panties all synthetic--Revealed when I took spills. Then came some cotton underwearNot dainty?workaday,Cool, comfy and pragmatic; For schooldays and for play. Then as I blossomed from a kidTo teen-girl on the go,I bought myself some skimpy pantsBikinis--so micro!I wore them beneath jeans so tightA hanger was requiredTo get the zipper up just right; The method was inspired! My dating days were different;I now wore linge...

Please visit her blog: Sont les mots qui vont tres bien ensemble for a truly poignant and perceptive tribute to a recently fallen U.S. soldier. It is worth the time to read what she has to say and link to the blog of the soldier who has died.

Win a Very Special Gift for Valentine's Day!
2008-01-04 17:52:00
Check out this page from my childhood scrapbook. These are authentic vintage valentines from 1971!!! I was only 10 and had lots of crushes on the boys in my class. I gave out valentines to every single person - even the people I didn't like! (I wonder if they remember me, as I remember them?)In honour of Valentin e 's Day (which is fast approaching), I am having a contest - a draw really (although I'm still working out the details on processing ballots - so if anyone has any suggestions on how to do this, i.e. online ballot boxes or some such thing, please let me know.) If not, I'll have to do things the "vintage" way: hand-written names in a hat, if you see what I mean.Aaanyywaay....For the next couple of weeks, if you comment on my blog, I will enter you in a draw for a FREE personalized Valentine's Day poem for your loved one. To give you an idea of the kind of thing you might receive as your prize, here's a love sonnet I wrote for a family member:With you I wandered once...

The Other Side of Christmas

UnfortunateThe butterball is baking;Lights all twinkle on the tree;Lots of presents have been opened; Now the kids are on a spree; Let?s open up those chocolates; And we?ll quaff another nog;Throw those giblets in the fridge? They?re the favourite of the dog.Set the table with the crystal;Grandma?s china?s in the chest;Use the silver and the linen; Those red candles look the best?Outside some streets over; She stands shivering in shame;Scouting ?johns? along the roadside--She?s a hooker on the game.Silently he trudgesOn the sidewalks of downtownBut he?s had no destination--Since the system let him down. She?s clinging to her babyIn a room she?s seen before; The last time that he hit her--And she made it out the door. His fingertips are frozenAs he lights a cigarette;Somewhere his mom is crying--But his dad has no regret.Inside it?s warm and toastyAnd the turkey?s burnished gold;Quick! Say grace and pour the wine;Let?s enjoy it ?fore it?s cold? When the party is all overAnd the family?s gone ...

Gold, In Deed
2007-12-17 20:29:00
A documentary entitled "Cereal Thriller" by writer/director David McDonald about a 1950's scheme that involved stashing deeds to a miniscule piece of land in the Yukon in Quaker puffed wheat and rice was a real eye-opener for me. In fact, if anyone is so inclined, I believe this has the makings of an amazing screenplay! I don't want to give the whole tale away, so read on in my poem:You Conned? In 1955, it seemsSome boys and girls had golden dreams,Fuelled by the fire of mythic MountieAnd his dog, King, who tracked their bountyOn friendly family radioOver hills of Klondike snow.Quaker Oats was waging warsWith Sugar Pops and such in stores;Barker?s man who counted doughHad a brainwave how to go:Through the ones who ate their stuff--Wheat and rice, not sweet, all puff.So began the campaign great;Breakfast boxes held kids? fate:Find a ?deed? before they?re gone;Own a piece of yon Yukon.Moms from sea to sea would runBuying for each little one.Fists were forced in boxes deep;Deeds disco...

This is a bit of a departure from my usual posts. I wanted to share with myreaders, one of my other true passions: cooking. At this time of year, food is never far from my thoughts.
