Is Trump Trumped?
2007-11-16 16:40:00 The Donald has been casting his net farther afield these days-- overseas in the highlands of Scotland. Trump is hoping to acquire land for his newest,"best golf course in the world". Problem is, the locals don't take too kindly to strangers - even if they have pots of money. In this poem, I've tried to get in the heads of all concerned and even dipped into Shakespeare's mind for a measure.Trumped ?Trump, ?The Donald?s? on a questHis new golf-course will be best;Only thing that?s in his path,Man of Scotland and his wrath.Didn?t help Trump said, unjust,Forbes?s land raised his disgust;Farmer, Michael can?t be bought; Now the Donald?s truly caught. His heart?s set on Balmedie,But the Heritage Agency,Sides with Forbes and pressure group;Trump may have to fly the coop,?Less he pulls Ace from his sleeve--Ancestry, if we believe;Mary, of the MacLeod clanWas his mother?that?s his plan--Win the heart and mind of Scot;Macbeth?s lady would be hot,If she knew that she?d been trumped,By such sch...

Baby, It's Cold Outside!
2007-11-13 15:33:00 And now for a little poem about "hygge". We've got the fire going, and there's food in the fridge, all we need is some visitors, a few Tuborg beers and a big bottle of Aquavit in the freezer. Skal! (Come and join me, won't you?)Days of HyggeWhen skies are grey in CanadaAnd outside rules a storm,We snuggle up inside our houseWhere ?hygge?keeps us warm.?What is this hooga??, you may ask--Not hearing word before,So ?Velkommen?, we say to you;Step in through our front door--Where fire?s burning in the stove,Candles flicker bright;Table?s set for feasting whileWith friends we do unite.Cozy couches pushed up closeTo the fire?s glow;Toast your neighbor with a ?skal?!Aqvavit must flow!Lots of food keeps coming outOn the heaping plates;Take up your Tuborg in between?Hygge rule dictates?Tradition of the Northern landsWe willingly embrace;Enjoying all the comforts ofMy husband?s dad?s birthplace. When winter?s breath is blowingIts dreary days so dank,We?re cozy in our little house; The Danes ... Life in the Danish "Hyggehus"
2007-11-11 21:30:00 Hygge: "The Danes have a word that's hard to translate, and no foreigner can hope to pronounce, but it's as Dani sh as roast pork and cold beer. It's hygge , and it goes close to illuminating the Danish soul. The closest native English speakers can come phonetically is "hooga" ... if we try forming our mouths for "ee" while saying "oo." It doesn't translate directly into any other language but we can illustrate it in action ... Gather the family and invite over your closest friends. Push the sofas and chairs up close to the coffee table. Turn off the lights and light some candles. Better still, light a fire in the hearth, serve plenty of good food and drink, raise your glass and make a toast or two, or three, and feel the warmth flow around the table. Smile at each other until you see the candlelight shimmering in each other's eyes. You've got hygge ! Home Is Where My Heart Is
2007-11-08 16:43:00 Years ago, an oddball singer popped up in the Eighties Post-punk era, emitting extremely strange Eastern-Euro yodelling sounds and singing about bizarre relationships and stories of her life-- "The Writing on the Wall", "Say When","Lucky Number" and "Telepathy" to name just a few. Her name was Lene Lovich (still is, I suspect) and the best part about her as far as I was concerned, was that I could dance my heart out to her outrageous music and dress up in the original Goth-look (only on weekends, you understand - I had to maintain somewhat of a normality in the presence of my Catholic family). One of Lene's fun, bouncy songs (with a slight undertone of menace) was called "Home ". It started out with an repetitive series of slow bass notes and ended up in a delerious frenzy. Great fun to whirl around on the dance floor like some kind of dervish. (Yup, I actually did that.) Over at the Cuz I'm a Princess...blog (see my blogfellows for link), Ms. P, is posting a photo of her home, wh... More About: Heart

Unfinished Business
2007-11-05 15:29:00 My mind is overflowing now with macabre thoughts and notions. There's something that I've always wanted to write about, but never quite had the method worked out. Suddenly it hit me! Of course it was at 4:30 Sunday morning when I should have been asleep, but this is what was stirring in my noggin. (All names have been changed to protect the guilty.)Tea-totallerIn my imagination,I?m working on a plot;Mashing up dried mandrakesI put them in a pot,And fill it up with waterFrom kettle, whistle-blown,Then steep until it?s readyFor serving men I?ve known.I fancy myself, Alice,In my own Wonder world; While hosting a tea party,My plan would be unfurled.Eight guests have been selected,Based on the role they played. Each placed along the tableWith china cups arrayed. How truly satisfying,To have my brew on hand,And pouring the infusion,?Do try it!? I?d demand.Don?t mind the bitter essence; It?s just my special touch--A little extra somethingThat makes the taste nonesuch.I?d circle the assembly;... More About: Business , Unfinished , Sine , Nish

Autopsy Turvy
2007-11-02 16:33:00 Anyone who has read some of my stuff in the past can attest to the fact that I have some bizarre notions in my mind. One of the weirdest I've come up with in my strange mental meanderings has to be this:Body Count I love a murder mystery,But only if it?s Brit. The grislier, the better--My dark side thrives on it.It may start with a bodyChucked in the woods somewhereOr tucked up in an old trunk,Stuffed underneath the stair.Along comes some old codgerWith terrier on a leadThat sniffs out something sanguine--Call coppers with great speed! Then enters the detective,Beleaguered by his woes,While somewhere on the fringes,The killer surely goes. All this sets me to thinkingNot of the shot or stabThe thing that I imagineIs me upon the slab.If I were the first victim,What would my corpse reveal? In coroner?s reporting,There?s naught I could conceal. She?d start with my foundation;Feet, singular she?d note. The second from the big toeIs ?freaky?, and I quote. Then moving ?long the carcass,So reachin...

Sweating It Out
2007-11-01 19:19:00 Believe it or not, I'm in my forties. You say you think I look younger than that? Why, thank you! Yes, it's true, and not just early forties either - I'm on the downhill slide to the "Big 5-0" (apologies to anyone out there who's already made it.) I've never had kids - despite his many blessings, God did not give us that gift, so even before I turned 40, my body started giving out strange signals. I would be sitting at my desk at work and suddenly break out in a sweat. I developed mysterious pains in my joints and other parts of my body. I would wake up in the middle of the night with extremely dry eyes (it felt as if pieces of sand were scratching my cornea--sheer agony!) My "sexy" was gone (I want my "sexy back"!) and worst of all, my razor-sharp memory vanished. I used to be known for being able to answer all manner of trivia questions in a flash. I knew every Best Picture winner for an Oscar from 1940 to present day. All gone, all gone. Why? Well, I'll tell you: HORMONES! ...

Shell Game
2007-10-28 17:07:00 I had no idea that there were people out there who were freeing lobsters. I always cringe when I go into a Chinese restaurant or a grocery store with a seafood section and see the poor creatures confined to their tanks, milling about helplessly with their rubber-banded claws. I'm rooting for the lobster in that scene in Annie Hall where Alvy and Annie attempt to get it in the pot.I have often thought of releasing them myself, but where would I go with them? I don't think they'd survive a minute in Lake Ontario or Huron and I haven't even got a pond in my backyard. I do have a birdbath, but only a shrimp would have room to squirm in there. So, I'll let others such as the couple noted below, take the crustacean by the claws, so to speak. (Published in The Daily Gleaner, November 3/07)Lobster ?s Lib ?You can?t put that one in a pot!?They must have said, before they boughtThe creature with the carapace.Imagine the store owner?s faceWhen Crowell and his lady-wifePaid out big bucks to... Walk this way!
2007-10-26 16:49:00 I have an interesting relationship with exercise. I'm a petite person who eats well, but when it comes to exercise, I get really bored. I must stress that I don't mind the physical activity. I just need mental activity at the same time. It takes quite a lot to get me out the door on an overly hot or cold day to embark on a trek, or a cycle or even a stroll. I like indoor pursuits. I like privacy and keeping to myself. I'm an introvert. That's not to say that I'm snarky or difficult in the presence of others. Let's just say that a little bit of other people goes a long way for me. I'm really a very pleasant person. Honest. Just ask any of my friends. I'll give you a list. You won't need to write it down, it's easy to remember. (There's only a few of them.)Now, this exercise thingy has got me in a muddle because I'm not getting any younger, and my health is always on my mind. A Till 'er, the Hun
More articles from this author:2007-10-04 17:15:00 Early this past summer, we were roused from our beds in the wee hours by a madman weilding a mower in the graveyard behind our house. I was bothered and bewildered by this nitwit. The following poem attempts to give the reader an impression of my outlook at the time. Recently, a local paper in my town, The Community News, published this as a letter to the Editor. Rude AwakeningRise at 7:00 all week long;Joining daily grind.Friday comes, heart swells with song;Week?s end peace o? mind.Sun goes down; it?s time for bed;Smooch my mate a kiss.Pillow?s soft, I sink my head;Ah! At last, such bliss!ZzzzzzWhat?s that buzzing round my ear?Sounds like giant bee.Swatting, yet I still can hear,Whirr relentlessly.Squirrel screeching -- lost its mind;As my brain-fog clears.Rush to window, draw of blind,Confirms my worst fears.Do I dream? Is this for real? This on Saturday?Who?s this numbskull ? with such zealOn his merry way?Snipping tops of grasses,Snarling round the stones,Stirring up the masses,... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
