Author Sues Seinfelds Over Cookbook
2008-01-08 18:51:00
From Yahoo News:NEW YORK - An author who claims Jerry Seinfeld's wife plagiarized her cookbook has sued the famous couple, finding no humor when the comedian compared the three-name author to the three-name killers of John Lennon and Martin Luther King Jr.The lawsuit, seeking unspecified damages for copyright and trademark infringement, was brought Monday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan by Missy Chase Lapine, the author of "The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids' Favorite Meals.""Jerry Seinfeld is an enormously wealthy and well-known comedian, and Jessica Seinfeld is his wife, but that does not give them license to slander and plagiarize," the lawsuit said.Read more ....For more cookbooks, Bookyards has over 20 cookbooks with recipes here.Bookyards has also listed three library sites that have cookbooks available to be downloaded here. The Abu Dhabi Translation Project
2008-01-07 18:11:00
From Bloomberg As part of efforts to transform the emirate into the cultural lodestone of the Middle East, the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, or Adach, has chosen 100 books to be translated into Arabic. Among them are Alan Greenspan's memoir, ``The Age of Turbulence,'' John Maynard Keynes's ``The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money'' and Milton Friedman's ``Capitalism and Freedom.'' The goal is to translate 100 titles every year. Adach has formed a nonprofit organization called Kalima (Arabic for ``word'') to undertake the translations and expand Arabic-language publishing in the United Arab Emirates. About 10,000 books have been translated into Arabic in the past millennium, according to a 2003 study by the United Nations Development Program. The demand has been small, partly owing to the historical tendency to focus most reading on religious texts and classical poetry. Some 300 new translations appear each year, so Kalima's further ...

December 1 -- World Aids Day: Books And Resource Links
2007-12-01 05:23:00
The official site for World Aids Day is here.I first learned about AIDS 25 years ago when my Pathology teacher came to class and started to talk about four patients from Haiti who had a disease that he had never seen before. They were all patients of the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal ..... recent immigrants who came to a new land in the hope of living a better life. The thing that I always remember from that experience is the look of concern and genuine fear that my professor showed when he talked about these patients. It is an image that I have never gotten out of my mind. It was a few years later that it dawned on me on why my professor was so concerned. He was way ahead of his time. This is a blog about books, so the best books that I have read on the subject of AIDS/HIV are the following:HIV and AIDS Basic Elements and PrioritiesBy S. KartikeyanThe Sanford Guide to HIV/Aids TherapyBy Merle A. SandeThe Science of HIVBy Michael DispezioHIV, Health & Your CommunityBy Reuben ...

Goldman's Sue Over Pirate Site Offering If I Did It -- A Recommendation To
2007-12-01 00:00:00
When I read the bottom CBC story it brought back some memories. Two months ago I was posting articles discussing ..... how with the proper search engine tools ... anyone can find any book on the web. I used the book "If I Did It" as my test case.Within a short period of time I was contacted by the legal representatives of the Goldman family. Within that second of reflection I realized that on a simple matter of morality ..... they were right and I was wrong. I deleted the link to rapidshare immediately. We were legally in the right, there is nothing that the Goldman's can do ..... but this is a family that has suffered enough .... and I knew that it would be best to accept their terms. My lawyers felt that I was abdicating a golden opportunity to promote Bookyards and to resolve certain legal questions.I disagreed, and I have not had any regrets since. What has changed is that with the passage of time I have now put certain boundaries and conditions on what could be put on the site...

Will Libraries And Bookstores Survive The Internet Age?
2007-11-30 19:40:00
The following is an excellent article from Pajamas Media. Will libraries and bookstores survive the Internet age? Richard Fernandez examines what the efforts by Google and Microsoft to digitize the world’s collection of books mean for readers and whether it is something to be celebrated or feared.Read more .... My Comment: the following is a reproduction of what was my comment to the article. An excellent article that accurately summarizes certain developments that are occurring with online libraries. I should know because I am the founder of Bookyards ( http://www.bookyards.com ), a library that has been online for the past eight years and is one of the first to explore the commercial possibilities for libraries on the internet. The only thing that I can add to the article are the following …. a historical perspective, and pointing out certain trends that are not explained in your article. When we first started there were only a handful of libraries, with a limited readership. Digital Library Exceeds 1 Million Books
2007-11-29 21:49:00
PITTSBURGH - Nearly a decade ago, computer scientists at Carnegie Mellon University embarked on a project with an astonishingly lofty goal: Digitize the published works of humankind and make them freely available online. The architects of the project said Tuesday they have surpassed their latest target, having scanned more than 1.5 million books — many of them in Chinese — and are continuing to scan thousands more daily.Read more ....The Universal Library can be found here.My Comment: I admire and give credit for this group in trying to provide books that are free and interesting to everyone. But while their goals are worthy, and their intentions are noble, I find the end product to be disappointing. The reasons are the following:1) A large number of their more interesting books are under copyright (1923 is their cutoff date). The result is that we are then limited to what we can read. A few pages (10% - 15%), and that's it. And what is 100% available ... these are old and uninte...

Will E-Books Ever Be A Best Seller?
2007-11-29 21:13:00
A good article from CNET on the question ..... Will E-Books Ever Be A Best Seller ?The answer is a big NO ...... at least in the short-medium term. The popular authors that produce the books that the public reads are beholden to the media companies and their publishing houses. This is where the money is to pay these writers (a very small and elite group), but to also guarantee that funds will be available for the final production, marketing, and distribution of an author's book.Once internet publishing companies can guarantee to match the same funds and resources that the brick and mortar companies can provide, the dynamics will then change. But to reach the same $25 billion dollar revenues that the conventional book industry achieves each year .... this is a tough and impossible nut to crack under present business models. The readership is definitely present on the world wide web. When I accumulate the traffic that online libraries receive on a daily basis, the total that I receive i...

A Response To Some Critics
2007-11-25 09:24:00
In a recent post "The Future of Reading -- Why Amazon's Kindle Digital Book Project Will Fail" I was successful in producing some critical comments. It seems that some of my readers have a desire to shoot the messenger. This post is an answer to them.Long time readers of this blog know that we do not condone piracy. If there is a book on our site that is copyrighted, and it is brought to our attention, we have always deleted the book. We always use Standford University's database on copyright works to find out what is the status of a book. If memory serves me correctly, we have only had a conflict of 6 or 7 books in the past seven years, 3 of them involving a set of 3 or 4 chess books that we had two months ago. Even though we were within bounds as a Canadian server on hosting these books, we accepted the American publisher's wishes. There are some books that we have on our site that are less than 50 years old, but for some reason the publisher did not go through the copyright proce...

Book Copyrights And The European Virtual Library
2007-11-23 19:14:00
As regular readers of this blog know, I have been publicly advocating for a long time the need to develop proper business models that will make available copyrighted material for free to the public .... but under a mechanism that will also properly compensate copyright owners. The article at the bottom of this post provides a heads up on how the European Virtual Library is progressing in this matter. They are now publicly stating that their goal is to digitize copyrighted material, but will also put in place a mechanism to compensate copyright owners. There are a number of questions that still need to be answered. For example, what is the mechanism of payment? Who will administer it? Who will be able to participate? Will the content be provided for free to the public, or will there be costs involved? The Europeans are finally looking at this in a serious and objective matter .... will the American publishers do the same?UPDATE: France proposes to cut off persistent internet pirates -...

Arabic Online Libraries -- A Frustrating Story
2007-11-21 21:58:00
With all the wealth that their oil generates, it is a shame that it is only now that at least one government in the Middle East is trying to do the obvious (see story in the bottom of this post).Bookyards list of six Arabic libraries is here.My Comment: I have spent the past six years trying to get someone in the Middle East to pursue an Arabic online book project such as Bookyards or Project Gutenberg .... but to no avail. Ambassadors, book publishers, Middle East government officials .... the list of people that we have contacted during this time can fill a Rolodex. This has personally become very frustrating to me, because I know that it is education, books, the free flow of information ….. these are the powerful counter-terrorism tools that we in the West have in our arsenal. I know that this is true because (if I may quote Strategy Page ) past experience has shown that education and books diminishes enthusiasm for the old customs, as well as Islamic conservatism or any oth...

The Future of Reading -- Why Amazon's Kindle Digital Book Project Will Fail
2007-11-20 20:45:00
There have been a number of articles touting Amazon's foray into the digital book market. Yahoo provides the basic details of this ebook, Business Week looks at the economics, and Newsweek gives the article that examines the entire issue.First .... the positive news. (1) There is no questions that there is a tremendous demand for having the option of being able to download books into a computer and reading it at your leisure. I see this activity happening at my own online library everyday. Other online libraries such as Manybooks (it specializes in providing works that can be read on portable devices) ..... have been doing this for the past few years and have all been experiencing continuous growth and popularity. Ebook reader or not ...... a number of small enterprises are exploring this medium and are starting to prosper from it.(2) Content is now available that can now be easily converted for reading on computers and/or on portable devices. This was not the case five years ago w...

Study: Americans Reading A Lot Less
2007-11-19 22:47:00
(CBS/AP) The latest National Endowment for the Arts report draws on a variety of sources, public and private, and essentially reaches one conclusion:Americans are reading a lot less. That's according to a 99-page study, "To Read or Not to Read: A Question of National Consquence," released Monday by the National Endowment for the Arts as a follow-up to a 2004 NEA survey, "Reading at Risk," that found an increasing number of adult Americans were not even reading one book a year. The new study examined data on everything from how many 9-year-olds read every day for "fun" (54 percent) to the percentage of high school graduates deemed by employers as "deficient" in writing in English (72 percent).Read More ....My Comment: On first glance the report gives a convincing argument for the case that Americans are "reading a lot less". But when I analyzed their methodology I noticed that they did not dwell too deeply on the impact that online libraries and online reading sources have had on the ...

Electronic Books The Future Of Publishing

Traditional paperback books could soon become as obsolete as cassette tapes and LPs, as leading publishing houses start to print their books electronically. 2007-10-27 01:29:00
Tony Blair, the former prime minister of Britain, has agreed to sell his memoir for an advance of around $9 million, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations. After a four-day auction, the book was bought by two divisions of Random House: Alfred A. Knopf in the United States and Canada, and Hutchinson in Britain. Sonny Mehta, chairman and editor in chief of Knopf, said that Mr. Blair intended to write a “serious and frank book” about his life and, in particular, his decade at 10 Downing Street.Read more .....
