The Sunday Salon: Because it’s Sunday and salon-like
2008-01-06 19:05:00
Copyright © 52 Novels dot com.Currently, I’ve got my ears and nose inside a couple of books: BOOMSDAY, by Christopher Buckley, and SLIDE, by Ken Bruen and Jason Starr. I have to admit that I’m not sold yet on BOOMSDAY. Granted, it’s the audio version so I’m not sure whether it’s the story itself or the reader, Janeane Garofalo. She’s just okay, mostly because she doesn’t do voices and parts very well. When she reads, all the characters tend to sound exactly alike… although that’s not what she’s going for. The story itself, that of a pissed off blogger/congressional aide who tries to take back the Social Security system (and thereby triggering a class war between baby boomers and Gen X/Y/Z-ers), is laugh-out-loud funny in points. That’s a good thing, considering Buckley’s a, you know, satirist. But I can’t help think that, if I had the print book instead, it wouldn’t pass the 100-page test. On the o...

Yesterday, Steven spent some time Googling himself and found the post. He was kind and generous enough to make the following offer: If any of your readers are interested, I’d be happy to mail them out a copy as long as supplies last – which isn’t too long. If you’re on the fence at all, please consider the following two things: Here’s what I had to say about THE CONCRETE MAZE: “It’s absolute noir, with enough hardboiled mixed in to keep everything dissonant and honest. What’s more, Torres’s prose is tight as a gnat’s ass, quite frankly.” Free books are always good If you want a copy, just leave me a comment in this post, making sure to use a valid e-mail address when you fill out the form. After a few days, I’ll contact people directly (via the valid e-mail ...

The Sunday Salon and a beautiful hunk of heartbreak
2007-12-09 15:20:00
Copyright © 52 Novels, 2007. Come get the good stuff directly from the source at 52novels dot com.First things first: I just hooked up with Debra Hamel’s group of Sunday readers/bloggers who post up thoughts and stuff about what they’ve got their noses into. There’s nothing to it… I figured I’d be reading and writing on Sundays anyhoo. Check it out and sign up. Once you do, Deb adds your RSS feed to the group’s Yahoo Pipe. Then that gets blasted out into the world for all to aggregate. It’s a nice way to be social and learn about some great reads from people around the globe. That said, I’ve been working my way through Steven Torres’s latest, THE CONCRETE MAZE. Two words: it’s fan-freaking-tastic. (Yes, the hyphens make it one word!) A while back, I’d read DEATH IN PRECINCT PUERTO RICO and wasn’t bowled over by it. I liked it, yes. But it wasn’t spectacular. Enter THE CONCRETE MAZE. It’s absolute n...

Instead, come get the good stuff directly from the source: 52novels dot com.A couple months back, JA Konrath—author of the Jack Daniels mystery series—made a few of his previously unpublished novels available for download. Way back then he also promised a short story compilation called 55 PROOF. I just noticed today that he’s finally made it available. You can download it here or directly from JA… whichever you choose you get the same great book of mystery, horror, sci-fi, and crime short stories. What’s more is that almost all of these stories are now out-of-print commercially. This download is the only way you’ll get them now. I had a chance today to read some… great stuff! If you’re a fan of Barry Eisler’s John Rain series, you’ll love Konrath’s hi...

Could something like TechStars work for novelists?

Instead, come get the good stuff directly from the source: 52novels dot com.I remember reading a while back about a Boulder-based technology startup incubator called TechStars. It sounded like a decent idea: invite young technology entrepreneurs to apply for up to $15,000 in seed money, mentoring from other young technology entrepreneurs, and great networking connections to help insure their success… all in exchange for five percent of the new company’s initial equity. There’re are some other perks, too. Fifteen grand isn’t a whole lot of money to ramp up a technology concern, so the group organizes an angel investor day, giving the young companies a chance to woo more money into the coffers. They also take care of incorporation details, provide free legal advice, and give coaching on numerous...

Mostly I think it’s absurd to believe that people will trade a centuries-old $10 device for a shiny new $400 device that doesn’t do anything until you buy software for it. They might use the digital to compliment the analog, but I don’t think we’ll see it replace analog in my lifetime… and possibly not in my unborn children’s lifetimes. I could be wrong. But I don’t think I am. What do you think? Similar Posts:DARKLY DREAMING DEXTER, by Jeff  Lindsay Share This Copyright © 52 Novels, 2007. All rights reserved. Except when they're not. Instead, come get the good stuff directly from the source: 52novels dot com.I think I may have offended my writing instructor. It was an accident. But it may have happened nonetheless. Last week in my novel workshop we were discussing the assigned class reading… Chapter 4 from Robert Olen Butler’s FROM WHERE YOU DREAM, a segment called “Cinema of the Mind.” In a nutshell, the book is a compendium of Butler’s lectures to undergraduate creative writing students, and this chapter—as its title suggests—compares movie storytelling to written storytelling and the way both artists employ “camera” techniques to bring vividness to the work. Even as writers, we’re bringing our narrative in close for some scenes and then pulling it back for the crane shot in others.A lo...

In Columbus. With the passing game. It’s not a great time for the Buckeyes to lose. In the BCS, it’s okay to lose a game… as long as you don’t lose it late. Sorry, Jim Tressel. No National Championship game for you this year. See you in Lincoln in 2008. And if that wasn’t enough, the St. Louis Rams benefited from the Bye week and upset the surging New Orleans Saints. Finally, the Male Sheep looked like the team nearly everyone in RamsNation thought they’d be this season. Instead, come get the good stuff directly from the source: 52novels dot com. Some of you have e-mailed to ask, “What’s taking you so long to read Joe Hill’s HEART SHAPED BOX?” Good question. After all, it’s been down there in the Reading right now widget going on three months since August 21st. I realize I can take some time to get through some of the books I’ve read, but this is ridiculous even by my own pokey standards. Time to come clean. It’s my first audio book. I’d been hesitant to give them a try. Not because I don’t consider it reading. Truth is, I do consider “listening to audio books” equal “to reading.” (And I consider those who think differently to be snobs.)Reading a book, for me, is a complete sensory experience: the spicy smell ...
