2007-10-22 13:33:00 My buddy and fellow League member Anton Strout got married yesterday--devastating the local female population, I'm sure--and Mark Henry took charge on the Lague blog today and posted a little, ah, video Valentine for Anton and his bride. So go check it out, and make sure you leave a comment! Also check back every day this week. We're doing a round-robin writing experiment, a short story about a wedding. Of course, I get to start it. I am imaginationed out, folks. I am working so hard on my shiny new WIP, and trying to come up with a new title for a novella I did (grr don't get me started), and thinking about edits for The Demon Inside, and...oh, sigh. Let's just say, I'm having a hard time coming up with something paranormal wedding-y that doesn't involve bizarre sexual rituals and blood. Which I'd be happy to do, and probably Jill too, but four days of sex scenes veers off into teh porn a bit, I think. So I'll have to come up with something this afternoon, something that won... Living in Fear
2007-10-19 11:11:00 Lots of things scare me. Flying. Oompa-loompas (seriously). Being trapped. The film The Changeling (watch it for Halloween). I don't particularly like spiders or water. I am made irrationally nervous by slugs and the idea of space travel. But you know what really scares me? Plagiarism. Not being plagiarised myself. That doesn't scare me because I'll cut a bitch. But the idea of plagiarising someone else, accidentally. It terrifies me. Sometimes I write what I think is a particularly pithy sentence. Almost instantly, I think, "Is that really mine?" And then I have to Google it. (Like this sentence, for example--a sneak peek from The Demon Inside!: Starting a fight with a Gretneg was never a good idea, even if that Gretneg was staring at [character name] as though [] was the only glass pipe in the crack den and it had been hours since [] last fix. [Yeah, I removed pronouns and identifying articles, so what? You'll have to wait to find out who it's about.] Maybe not the greatest sen... More About: Living , Fear
BLAH!
2007-10-18 13:11:00 I'm stuckI'mstuckI'mstuck! BLAAAH!I'm about to start Chapter Seven, and since I had to turn my old Chapter One into Chapter Six, because my CP didn't like my Chapter One (and I thought not enough happened in it either), I've written a new Chapter One that I'm not sure I like, and I hate it when it feels like the whole freaking project is just falling down around my ears! And I thought it was good and now I think it stinks. This is why I can NOT take time away from a project in the first half. I totally lose it all and I don't feel like getting it back.(Oh, and yesterday's post was #300.) More About: Blah
Eighth Wand is released!
2007-10-17 16:59:00 Okay, well, Blogger won't let me upload my cover image, but Eighth Wand is releaed today at Ellora's Cave!Buy it here. The tarot card Prudence finds at a Wiccan Beltane festival promises passion, travel, and the end of a stagnant, dull situation. She has no idea that the card's prediction is about to come true in the form of Royd, a warrior of the Fae on Earth to retrieve the eighth wand of his people's lands, stolen from them by Prudence's grandmother.Royd wants only to take the wand back home, until he sees Prudence and is instantly captivated by her vibrancy and life. Together they must fight to send him safely back with his prize, but perhaps in Prudence he's found something just as valuable?and just as hard to lose.Chapter OneThe problem with the women of the Bright Moon coven was that they insisted on doing outdoor rituals without shoes on. Prudence knew it could be worse. The thought of going skyclad?naked?filled her with horror. But now the circle had ended and Prudence,... More About: Released
In Which my Nervousness makes me Rude
2007-10-14 18:34:00 So, got back from London a few hours ago, had a great time. Went to Harrod's, saw this tacky-ass statue of Diana 'n' Dodi and marvelled at how Mr. Al-Fayed managed to use his own face in most of the decorating. But we got some food there, and ate it in Speaker's Corner, then headed for Selfridge's, which was more fun than Harrod's and had a small selection of American food. I now have enough canned pumpkin to get me through the holidays. And eggnog too! Yay!Unfortunately, we'd dressed for cool weather and it was fairly warm. We were sweating, especially since the Tube was extremely crowded and it was sweltering down there. I took off my sweater and realized I was, well, a bit smelly from all the sweating. Eep!So we had some time before the show we were going to started--The Woman in Black, which was pretty good--and hubs wanted to go to the Murder One bookstore on Charing Cross Road, so we did. They have a romance room there. And in that romance room was an entire bookcase of ... More About: Rude
Read This while I'm Gone
2007-10-12 10:51:00 We're heading up to my MIL's in a few hours and will be back on Sunday. While thanks to the magic of BlackBerry I'll still get my emails, I probably won't respond unless it's fairly urgent, especially tomorrow when we'll be in London. So, I've been wanting to talk about this book for a looong time, and here it is. The Church of Dead Girls by Stephen Dobyns. I've mentioned it a few times, but now that fall is here I decided it's time to blog about it.I love this book. Seriously love it.In the main it's a fairly humdrum tale, really. A few girls go missing in a small Northeastern town. But the book itself is so much more than that. It's about secrets, and how we never really know what's happening in other people's houses or in their heads. It's about how quick we are to mistrust even people we consider friends. It's about how little it takes to turn good people into bad ones. It's a slow book. After an absolutely knockout opening--one of the few books I've ever picked u... More About: Read
Axing the Ladies in Charge
2007-10-10 17:50:00 So, in a move stunning in its ignorance, Warner Brothers has decided not to make any more films with female leads. Specifically, apparently, superhero films with female leads. You may have heard about this elsewhere--the article showed up on Newsarama Sunday night, and I've seen it mentioned in a few places since then, but I didn't se eit until Monday night, so I'm blogging about it so there. Now, on the one hand I see their point. WB took a nice big hit when the Catwoman movie bombed. Elektra didn't do well either (and not without reason--the concept of the film was fairly kick-ass, but the film itself not great.) I don't think the decision is based on ignorance as in sexism, but ignorance as in, why don't you assholes make some good movies with women in them, dumshits? Take Catwoman (please). I would have been all over a good Catwoman film. I love Catwoman. When I heard they were making a Catwoman movie the hubs and I were both pretty excited. Then we heard Halle Berry had bee... In which I am Stupid
2007-10-08 14:32:00 So I went to the grocery store this morning, as is my wont, because we needed stuff for dinner, and...I guess I don't have to explain why I went to the grocery store, do I?But I felt all clever as I made my purposeful way down the aisles (I dislike grocery shopping, so tend to push my cart in front of me like a weapon in a desperate attempt to get in and get out quickly). We've probably got enough toothpaste left for the rest of the week, but I thought, "I'm going to be on top of things today!" and bought more. I remembered to get myself more razor blades. I got more diapers even though we have about half a package left. I bought more juice mix for the girls. All in an attempt to be a Homemaker, someone who knows instinctually what's happening in every little corner of her domain and is On Top Of It.So, after grabbing some actual food, I headed to the self-service checkout aisle and rang myself up, scanned my bonus card, reached for my ATM card...Oh, no.I cleared out my pockets ... A NYR Book (and a couple of questions)
2007-10-05 18:13:00 I know it's been a while since I did a New Year's Resolution book. I have been buying and reading, I just haven't gotten around to posting about them. But, to be perfectly honest, at the moment my brain is fried, and I couldn't think of a blog post, and I have been wanting to post more about books I enjoy (I'm thinking I may do a once-a-month series on my favorite novels or something, at some point), so...here it is.I grabbed this book at Borders in Bristol simply because it's advertised as a Gothic novel, and I love gothics (gonna write one, too, when I'm done with my next UF.) Not only was it advertised as a gothic, but it includes witchcraft, alchemy, remote viewing, missing persons, and a big spooky mansion. Which made it a must-try for me.The result? Pretty good. It wasn't quite as scary as I would have liked, and I don't think it really qualifies as a gothic. It's more of a drama/mystery. (In a true gothic, there is a mystery from the past which somehow relates to or... More About: Questions , Book , Couple

2007-10-04 07:24:00 Faery woke up screaming at 3 am, I went back to bed around 3:15 after she went back to lseep, I couldn't sleep, I got up andFINISHED THE DEMON INSIDE!First draft: 85,131 words. I imagine I've got another 1-2 more to add in edits because I know at least two minor plot holes I have to plug.Oh, it's done! It's finally freaking done, after 10 weeks of work (not to mention several weeks of planning and false starts.)Now I can start the next one. :-)
Nobody's going to do it for you
2007-10-03 09:34:00 So as I come up for air, on my last free day this week (because tomorrow is Faerie's first day at nursery, and I will be holed up here on the couch finishing The Demon Inside, which I expect to have done by the time I go to bed Friday night pleasegods), I wander around the internets. (In between bouts of inspecting my daughters' hair. She's home again today for a final delousing.)Everyone and their brothers are gearing up for NaNoWriMo, something I've never done or cared about, and actually think can be counterproductive (yes, Anton, I'm running with it). I mean, if you want to do it and enjoy it, that's fine. But you shouldn't need that kind of encouragement to write a book. You shouldn't need bells and whistles and pistols firing at the starting line and constant vigilance to get your book done. You should have the discipline to do it no matter what month it is, and you should remember that NaNo? Not a prerequisite to writing. So many people seem to have it in their head t... It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...
2007-10-01 11:37:00 Or, my weekend in review.First, I had just gone to bed Friday night (actually Saturday morning) when Faerie woke up and started crying, so I went into the kitchen to get her a drink and ended up knocking an empty beer bottle off the counter. So, while everyone slept, I was hunkered down in my underwear in the kitchen trying to clean up bits of broken glass. Fun!Saturday we decided to head down into the hinterlands (otherwise known as "the further away of the two towns within an hour's drive that offer semi-decent shopping") because everybody needs stuff. The girls both need new winter coats, and really, clothes of all kinds. They're finally outgrowing everything we brought with us, even the stuff we bought too big. Plus, I'm still on the lookout for shoes and jewelry for my Christmas party dress. Plus, hubs wanted to look in the only decent DVD store we know of, which is there, and he also wanted to stop in to the comic shop there and see his buddy who owns the place. (I love the... Who Pays?
2007-09-28 10:51:00 So reading this article on Gawker got me thinking. The article, for those who don't want to or don't have time to click and read it, is about "going Dutch" on dates. Specifically the first few dates. And whether it's okay for a man to expect a woman to pay for her own dinner on a first date. And whether women should expect to have their meals paid for. And if it's about men being cheap or women being empowered. Or whatever.I haven't dated in some time, and when I did...well, frankly, I pretty much never did. Not your typical dinner date, anyway. I'd usually hung around with a guy for some time before we really went out together. Or we'd already kissed, or whatever, and so were dating. Usually we were both so poor that whoever had money would pay. But we were also barely in our twenties and spent most of our available cash on beer. But even then, if it was a date-type evening, I never considered paying. When my boyfriend would say he wanted us to go out to eat, we both took it f... More About: Pays
We Have Nothing to Fear...
2007-09-26 14:52:00 ...but fiery death at 13,000 feet.See, I've been gently encouraged by more than one person to attend the Romantic Times convention next year. And I really, really do want to go. There's parties. There's a bar. There's a book signing that's huge and takes place two weeks after Personal Demons will be released. There's a bar. There's lots of writers. I'd get to stay in a hotel room. With a bar.But I'm terrified of flying. And I hate flying. And this particular journey would require a stopover, which brings my total travel time, from leaving my door to arriving in Pittsburgh, to something like 16 hours. And did I mention I'm afraid to fly?I do it. I've done it. But the older I get the more scared I get. And intellectually I know it's safe and blah de blah. But I can't help thinking I'll be unlucky. I hate being a person who doesn't do things they want to do because they're afraid, but...really, isn't it a bit reckless, a bit irresponsible, to take such chances, just so... More About: Fear
The Unredeemable Sin?
2007-09-24 11:42:00 When I did my post about heroes hitting women, Milady Insanity commented on livejournal that there is in fact a worse crime for a hero to commit than hitting a woman. Rape. Rape is the unredeemable sin.Or not.Because as we all know, men have been redeemed from it countless times. The most famous case is of course Luke and Laura from General Hospital back in 1981. I've spent some time hunting but can't find any other examples online, although I know there are, because I remember reading an article about it a few years back that cited more recent cases. So why is that? Is it because we can believe a man might only rape a woman once, but once he starts hitting, he'll never stop? If the hero hit the heroine because he loved her so much he couldn't help himself, would that be any different?"Forced seduction" is fairly popular still, as far as I know. Yes, the difference there is that the heroine always consents, even if it's at the last second. And I'll be honest. I don't see anyth... More About: Redeem
Manic Friday
2007-09-21 15:25:00 Oh, what a busy busy morning.Started off just fine. Then my dress for this year's Christmas party arrived (remember, the big fancy one my husband's work throw every year? I found a faboo dress ON SALE at Fairy Gothmother online. Wheeee! Shiny burgundy silk, the kind that looks black when the light hits it right, I am so, so jazzed. I am also on a serious diet again. I've lost almost three pounds in the last week and a half, so doing well.)I figured I had just enough time to open the package, but of course once I SAW it, I couldn't resist running upstairs and trying it on--at least the top (it's a two piece.)Then Princess lost a tooth, good ecause it's been loose for a while.I was running a little late thanks to the couture oogling and the tooth-hole examining and the convincing Princess it wasn't exactly a good idea to take the tooth to school, because what if she lost it and so couldn't leave it for the tooth fairy, when she suddenly said, "We were supposed to take our litt... 2007-09-19 11:28:00 Wow! I got such a lovely response yesterday, and everyone seems to like my little magnets so much! Very exciting, especially since I designed them myself and came up with the catchphrase all on me own.So, I'm extending the little mini contest. Pimp the League, and specifically me (mentioning how cool and funny I am and especially how you can't wait to get your hot little hands on your very own copy of Personal Demons when it comes out) and you're in with a chance. AND, I'm pretty sure I'll be giving away more than one magnet. Because y'all seriously blew me away with how enthusiastic you were. (Unless you were just faking it, and inside thinking, "She expects us to get excited about a dumb little magnet? WTF? Cheapskate. Guess I'll say something nice, but...sheesh." In which case...ow, that was mean!)And...in a fit of dorky excitement, I created something else. Pimp me out, baby!
2007-09-18 12:47:00 Yes! My inaugural blog over at the League of Reluctant Adults blog today, on the subject of: Rudolph and the Island of Misfit Toys, or is funny the Rodney Dangerfield of Speculative Fiction? And I'm offering a prize, too! My book doesn't come out until April, but I'm still a giver. It's a magnet! What does it say? "The Yezer made me do it." What does it mean? The Yezer Ha-Ra is the Hebrew name for that inclination in all of us to do evil, to hate ourselves, to succumb to our desire to sin and create new sins, to give up on life, to dwell on bad memories, etc. In other words, the Yezer Ha-Ra is the Hebrew name for our personal demons. So don't forget to pimp us out, and be the first to get a magnet! Trust me. As David Ogden Stiers said in Better off Dead, "Everyone's going to have one of these."So pimp us on your blog and link to my post, and you could be the proud owner of the very first item of Personal Demons merchandise. That's bound to be worth money, folks.See you over there! More About: Baby , Pimp

What's he wearing under there?
2007-09-14 13:11:00 Oh, how I hate writing about men's underwear.See, here's my problem. I'm just plain wierd. For some reason, although I know men in the real world wear underwear, and although I don't find anything about men's underwear intrinsically unsexy, I have such a hard time including men's underwear in sex scenes. Or even regular scenes. So I often write heroes who don't wear any.But that's kind of gross, isn't it? I mean, if you think about it, not only would a man with no underwear be risking all sorts of zipper injuries, but all sorts of, um, fluids and such would get all over his pants. This is the same reason I rarely write women who don't wear undies. C'mon. We've all seen the trainwreck that is Britney and her love of ungracefully exiting from various automobiles, thus flashing us her stubbly ladyparts. Am I the only one who looks at that and thinks, not only is it just tacky, but...eeew! Her dresses must need some serious cleaning after every wearing.(Yes, I realize this is ...

2007-09-12 19:44:00 Sorry I'm updating so late. I could be all cool and say it's because I didn't want to stymie further comments on the violent hero post (which is partially true--keep commenting if you're interested), but I admit it. I've spent huge chunks of time today trying to work, watching Beauty and the Beast with the Faerie, and obsessively checking for updates about the Led Zeppelin reuinion show, and trying like hell to get onto that damn registration website (still no luck, it's crashed.) The hubs is a HUGE Zephead and I'm a pretty big fan myself, so we're aching to go. Keep your fingers crossed for us.Also, working a lot. It hit me with terrifying clarity earlier today that to reach my end-of month goal I need to write approximately 40k words between now and September 30. Which will very well turn into more, as I've had a flash of inspiration regarding Demon Inside, which I'm very excited about and may well add another 10-15k to the ms.See, I'm not really a detailed plotter. Can a hero ever hit a woman?
2007-09-10 14:50:00 Any woman? Is it ever justified?I should confess something here. The EC novel Anna J. and I wrote, that comes out in January, will most likely garner an X rating in part for this reason--violence against women. Sexual violence against women, specifically (but not limited to, and not rape of a woman.) It's not the only reason, but it is part of it.When two people get off on violence, on hitting and being hit, is it wrong for them to hit each other? How about if the woman is only of average physical strength but the man is particularly strong? (This isn't the sitch in the EC book, I'm just thinking out loud here.) Is it worse if, say, your superstrong vampire hero punches a woman, as opposed to your average guy?How bad does a woman have to be before it's "acceptable" for a man to hit her? Just bitchy? Evil? Really evil? Mutilating puppies evil? I'm not talking about spanking or whipping or any type of ritualized BDSM play. I'm talking about hauling off and punching someone.See, my... Am I an emotional cripple?
2007-09-07 12:05:00 (Wow, it feels odd to not be blogging about publishing on a Friday, it's been so long! The summer series is over; no more interviews, no more posts. I'm sure I'll keep blogging about it on occsion, we're just not doing it regularly anymore.)So someone on one of the message boards I'm a member of posted a question the other day, about emotional intensity and sex scenes. The gist of it was, if a man is in a very low, unhappy place emotionally, is it taking advantage of him for the heroine to, ah, take a tip from Marvin Gaye?I was frankly stunned that this was even an issue. perhaps if the situation had been reversed and the heroine was the one feeling terrible (you see how sexist I am) I *might* have felt a little differently. Maybe. But my response on reading it, and still is, "Huh? But getting laid makes people feel better."This is a MAN we're talking about here. And it's not like the woman is some total stranger who got him drunk and molested him, she's his romantic interes... More About: Ripple , Emotional
All kinds of stuff. And green poo.
2007-09-05 13:26:00 This is the cover for my Ellora's Cave "Torrid tarot" series novel, The Eighth Wand, which will be released October 17. Pretty nice, I think. Especially considering the vague description of the tattoo I gave them, the artist did a splendid job.So. Tanks to all who enjoyed the hubs' guest blog. He was too shy to come back and reply to everyone's comments, but he did read them. And yes, we have talked about writing something together, and I', pushing for it. As soon as I finish even half of the other stuff on my plate.Rather than being flat-out blocked, I'm currently at that point, on the crest of the hill, where my WIP seems like total mush. The characters don't feel right. The story seems dull. I'm frantically checking and re-checking to make sure I haven't left any plot threads unchecked as we get ready to roll into the climax. It feels like I've been writing this book for years. And of course, the world is conspiring against me, too. Today is the Princess's first day back... More About: Green , Stuff

2007-08-31 14:35:00 1.Do you have any comment on RWA?s recent re-redefinition of ?Vanity/Subsidy publisher??I think I?ve pretty well beat this horse to death on various blogs and message boards, but at this point, I?m going to take a wait and see attitude as far as that?s concerned. I?ve conversed with several people on the board and I don?t get a sense of malice from their decisions. I do think that RWA in general and members of the board specifically (whoever they may be at any given time) cannot afford to be uneducated and uninformed about the ins and outs of epublishing and still make decisions about and for epublished authors, so I?m heartened by the task force that?s been formed for discovery. Certainly we will do whatever we can to continue to present epublishing in a positive light among the general membership and board.2. What do you think a writer should look for from an epublisher, and how should they expect to be treated?I?ve heard this repeated more often recently, but an author needs to l... 2007-08-31 02:53:00 All right, maybe more like a minor incursion...Stacia, thanks so much for inviting me over today! I've got a new release today, so Stacia (who's December when she hangs out with us smut-puppies :p ) kindly suggested I stop on by, and well... here I am!I'm Sierra Dafoe, and I write erotic romance. Really steamy erotic romance. What can I say? I like the hot stuff! But I also like really unique characters, exciting stories, and unusual predicaments. All of which means I write anything from shapeshifting dragon princes, to a galaxy where all the men are sex slaves, to a place a little more close to home -- like Portland, Maine, where the Shifter Sisters, my trio of rock-n-rolling paranormal misfits, take the stage at my fictional version of Geno's every Friday and Saturday night. The Shifter Sisters series started with Sex and the Single Werewolf, in which Luna, the lovelorn lycanthrope, discovers the power of friendship, the horrors of waxing, and the love of her life in sexy Irish...
