Chapter Eleven
2007-07-26 19:14:00
David sat in his living room, still. He was confounded. Outwitted. Beguiled. Tricked. Duped. Deceived. He had once been the liveliest mind in the programming industry, and here he was, fooled by a heap of silicon. Still, he had yet to witness any of Random=s anger or revenge. In fact, he couldn=t even think of what Random could do. What was he threatened with? Getting a bunch of junk e-mails? Big deal. Not being able to record his favourite episodes of M*A*S*H? Boo fucking hoo. Nope. He felt quite secure in the knowledge that physically, at least, he couldn=t be touched. So this was the information age, so what? He still couldn=t believe that in the virtual world any harm could come to him. So he sat, navigating the internet to try and find any evidence that Random was out there, lurking like a virus in someone else=s CPU. After an hour or so, he gave up. Random had vanished, just disappeared, like an e-mail with a bogus destination. David=s rea...

CHAPTER TEN

David sprinted out of Kane=s womb and out in to the open plan office. Ronnie was still waiting outside. AHey killer, how=s it going?@ Ronnie grinned. David flew by him, heading towards the exit. AYou fucking moron!@ yelled David over his shoulder. He was mad. Ronnie had screwed up sometimes before, but this took the biscuit. He had employed an ex-con. A genius, undeniably, but one who was famous for his somewhat volatile programming. Creation was dangerous, practically embodying the chaos that Brotherhood had given to the nation, and it had been handed to David on a plate. As he jumped in his car and sped off towards home, he assessed the consequences of doing Ronnie a favour. Back in the womb, Kane had confided in David. Creation was part of the Brotherhood stable, and it seemed that everything Kane had ever written had been tainted with his criminal genius. The hacks he had performed as a teenager fulfilled their purpose, but when he had turned to more cre...

CHAPTER NINE
2007-05-17 13:31:00
The door swung open, and David stepped inside. He was expecting his usual palatial office, but had stepped into a kind of short hallway, about two metres long, with a door the other end, leading into the office proper. An airlock, thought David. This guy has flipped. He closed the door behind him and stepped forward, shaking his head in disbelief. He turned the handle on the inner door, and stepped in. What was once David's expensively decorated office, with a view out onto Wilshire Boulevard, was now adapted to meet the needs of it's new occupant. The window had been bricked up, the carpet removed, and all furniture consigned to a dumpster. The entire room, ceiling, walls and floor, had been covered in a semi-transparent polythene, giving the place a clinical stench. David's designer wall lights remained, glowing from underneath the plastic sheeting, casting a pink glow into the room. It's a fucking womb. The guy's encased himself in a womb. In the ...

CHAPTER EIGHT
2007-04-30 23:09:00
Lester Kane was notorious. In the gaming industry, there was only two things that scared the executives; The IRS, and Kane himself. How he gained this notoriety is a kind of programming myth, passed from chatroom to chatroom, like a spook story that geeks would tell their kids. Back in the days when the internet was slow and boring, there were still a few people getting their kicks from hacking. Not the anti-capitalist, no-logo type that brought down websites, but the sneak around, see what you can find, then take over someone=s life kind of hacking. Here, Kane was king. Legend has it that he was raised by good hippie-type programmer parents, and started to abuse his genius for computer skills at the age of six, using just a touch tone phone to rig a TV vote, just so they=d play his favourite cartoon episode. He began to show off, and taught some school chums how to perform some simple hacks. In his grade, every kid passed their tests, and school always ended early on F...

CHAPTER SEVEN (better late than never...)
2007-04-15 18:55:00
It was a little past four and David was already bored with the game. It undoubtedly had something great about it, but it just wasn't...compelling.Well I guess this is it. The thing is now about three years old, and I've had some laughs with it. It successfully replicates the human rate of development (albeit speeded up, of course), which means I've seen Random grow in front of my very eyes, have it's first steps, and even attempt speech. Kind of cute really. But if it's sales that Ronnie's after, this ain't it.The animation is fantastic though, and I really think that if we fused this concept with a typical hero-driven game, then we could have something that no-one else has done before. I should talk to the programmer. The programmer. There's a thought. David wondered who it could be. Someone he knew? Doubtful. Even though he took next to no interest in the company since Judy's death, he knew that any of his old college buddies were far too cynical to try somethin...

CHAPTER SIX
2007-04-04 22:55:00
If the pregnancy had lasted nine hours, David could only assume that one hour was equal to one month in the life of this cyber-kid. For its birth, the program seemed to be emulating the pain and delirium of a 36 hour labour within a few short minutes. The system began to scream. Not a faint hum or whistle as hardware may often do in a dilemma, but a full blown human scream. David watched agog as the process took place on his home screen. The foetus was in a considerable panic, twitching and kicking as it attempted to flee from the womb. The screen still showed the same ultrascan image, but with heart monitors and various other levels beeping and pulsing away. David thought it was remarkable. A simple image and layer after layer of sampled and synthesized sound had produced a spectacle that was truly magical to behold. As a programmer, he was in awe, and yet as a human being, he was actually feeling moved by the miracle of birth here in his own living room. He scribbled some ...

CHAPTER FIVE
2007-03-27 20:40:00
Light poured through David's open window, and a gentle breeze toyed with the drapes. David woke, opening his eyes slowly, one at a time, to ease himself into the morning light. The night before was a little hazy, but he remembered most stuff. Ronnie, the rehab story, the job. The game. Ah, shit, had he left that on all night? He pulled himself from his sofa, and instantly regretted it as pain shot through his cranium. Fucking Ronnie, he thought. Asshole had to buy me that last drink. He staggered to the kitchen and poured himself some water from the fridge. What was the game? His brain, apart from aching, had to know. The programmer in him had lain dormant for two long years, but it still cried out. He needed to investigate. In the lounge, the screen had switched itself off to save energy. He tapped couple of buttons on the control, and it hummed into life. He stared at the screen, and was truly impressed with what he saw.It was a foetus.Computer generated, naturally, b...

I've sold my soul to Rupert Murdoch and got a myspace page, which I really wasn't sure about. I thought it was just for teenage Americans to flirt with each other and spell things badly, but this is pretty cool. I've got CONvicts in my friends! That is sooo cool. I've been a fan for ages, and I love their strip (as in comic, not striptease). And even cooler Spike from Templar, Arizona has added me as a friend! I love her work, please view it if you haven't already.Anyway, please befriend me if you can, or send me an email now and again.Hope you're enjoying the story. Anther chapter at the weekend...Dan

CHAPTER FOUR
2007-03-17 17:44:00
It finally got to closing time, and the two stumbled into the street. They hugged drunkenly, and a large bulge hit David in the chest."Jesus, you got a pacemaker now?"Ronnie frowned, and felt his jacket pocket."Ah, shit! This is what I came here for!" he produced a large cartridge from his jacket and David vaguely recognised it as a new hi-tec external drive for a home control console. "Your first mission, should you choose to accept it. Just take a look at this and tell me what you think." He handed David the drive, and added a few other leads from his other pockets."What is it?" David eyed the hardware dubiously."Oh, it's great. State of the art. Groundbreaking, you'll love it."David sniffed the air, and caught the unmistakable whiff of bullshit."You don't know, do you?" David smiled. Ronnie broke out in a grin."What the hell do I know about computers? My new programmer made it. He's using the new T-Life motherboards to generate a random AI platform, and building the ...

CHAPTER THREE
2007-03-13 21:03:00
Ronnie got them a couple more beers, and pulled himself conspiratorially closer to David."At rehab, they got this oath, just like AA. I had to swear never to take part in, or observe any game or interactive computer program," he said, shrugging."Jesus! How the hell are you meant to run your company?" laughed David."Exactly! I can't even do the meetings in a restaurant, cos of the similarity to the VR palace. The asshole in me goes into overdrive, cos it feels like I'm in the game," Ronnie peered sadly into his beer. As fascinating as the conversation had been, David saw that Ronnie was a broken man. His life and his business were in danger, all down to an addiction, just like any other. "I'm working on it. I only have meetings in my office now, and some other people from rehab understand, but there's no way I can test my own games. I need someone I can trust..."Ronnie looked hopefully to David. David looked away. He had feared this. For two years, he had been out of w...

NEWS: More stuff.
2007-03-10 17:23:00
Hi people of the blogosphere.Another week gone, and the third chapter will appear very soon. I've made a few small, but very important, additions to the site here.Firstly, I've added the lovely shiny title at the top of the page, and secondly I've put a few more links in the linky things box. Check out the two at the top especially: Blogels.com and Britblog. They're lovely. Also, being a poor librarian with no other means to support me, I've added a PayPal donate button, which means that should you wish to, you can throw me a dollar (or pound, or yen, or euro) or two every now and again. I'd love it if you could; the future of this site and indeed my own writing may depend on this.Speaking of money, I'm trying to sell my guitar, so check it out on ebay:http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Epiphone-SG-G4 00-AS-NEW-Never-been-played_W0QQitemZ1500 99730414QQihZ005QQcategoryZ33037QQrdZ1QQc mdZViewItemKeep the feedback coming, and see you out there in the web of space that is the internet.Dan

CHAPTER TWO
2007-03-04 23:04:00
David and Ronnie stepped outside the restaurant into the humid air of LA. As David started to walk over to the valet parking, Ronnie caught his shoulder."It's okay, I know a bar just around the corner.""Bar? I thought you said you were just outta rehab?" enquired David. Ronnie kicked an imaginary stone."Yeah, for games. You think I'd give up the drink?"They strolled along the sidewalk, past workers on their cigarette breaks, and into a nondescript bar. Ronnie got them a table, and David sensed a change in him immediately. At the restaurant, Ronnie was loud, brash and an asshole supreme. Here, he was just plain Ronnie, the same friend who had acted as best man at David's spur-of-the-moment wedding. He still had the loud clothes and excessive aftershave of course, but his manner was kinder, quieter. A young waitress came over to their table, and David half expected another ass-slapping incident. Instead, Ronnie turned into the girl's favourite uncle."Heya Ronnie! Where y...

Hello web people.Well this site has been up for two weeks and I've put up the first chapter. I hope you readers like it (Give Ronnie a chance, he's not that much of an asshole). I've also tinkered with the site a little, and added buttons for digg, del.icio.us, technorati, and a load of blog listing sites. Look to the right. They're there, nice and shiny and new. Don't they look clickable? On that subject, if anyone has any tips as to how to get my site and story 'out there' and seen, please email me at billymcbrie@gmail.com . I'd love to link exchange with anyone, should they like my stuff and vice versa. On with the show anyway. Chapter two coming up soon.Dan

CHAPTER ONE
2007-02-24 15:35:00
David had been waiting for an hour and a half, and had already knocked back a bottle of wine. He could see the waiting staff getting tetchy, but he was damned if he was going to drink himself into oblivion just to be polite.Ronnie was always late. He was one of those annoying people who considered it fashionable, a trait left behind from his stint as a rock superstar. Ronnie had spent his youth in Oblivi8, a manufactured rock outfit that conquered the music markets of the world. If you were to meet David, you wouldn't have put him down as being the best friend of a superstar. David was meek and mild, whereas Ronnie was outspoken and practically day-glo. David had met him when Oblivi8 collapsed and Ronnie had invested his millions in the small software company that David had been working for at the time. As it happened, this was the shrewdest move Ronnie had made since turning up for his band auditions. Computer games stocks soared in the ensuing months, and the whole industr...

News: Welcome to my world...
2007-02-18 19:54:00
Hello good people of the interweb, and welcome to the world of creation 1.0. My name is Dan, and I'll be your narrator for the foreseeable future.I'll explain. What we have here is an experiment to get my writing out there and I've got an idea for a novella in installments. It's a cyber thriller, of sorts. That's to say, the action centres on the world of technology, programming and the internet, set in a slightly futuristic world, but very recognisably our own. I'll post a chapter every now and again, and keep you updated with my world, if you're at all interested. If you want to contact me, please do leave comments.I should probably mention that the story contains some strong language and themes (for you prudes out there), and that I'm British, so the previous spelling of 'centre' is correct. The story will have the word 'Chapter' in the post title, and be in a different font. Also, my time planning isn't great, hence why I haven't said exactly when chapters ...
