San Francisco Bans Plastic Bags: Furoshiki Rule

Yesterday, San Fran cisco became the first city in the U.S. to ban the use of bags made of petroleum products. Kudos to San Francisco for its environmental friendly legislation. The buzz now is what will be used in the place of plastic bags. Princess Haiku says, it's time to return to traditional Japanese FUROSHIKI.The Japanese already know this and furoshiki are now the thing. A furoshiki is a square cloth made of durable cotton or recycled fabric that is folded into a bag of sundry shapes and sizes. Furoshiki are practical, useful, washable, beautiful and reusable. Tonight, I was musing on the fate of the Nymph, Echo who lost her own voice and was forced to repeat the words of others. I think that to some degree this is the fate of all of us. France has just announced that it is going to release a 50 year archive of UFO data. Aurore goddess of the Dawn, approaches me after a sleepless night like a solar flare streaking through the window and straight into the cornea of blue eyes. Today, I walked along Telegraph Avenue in pursuit of urban art observing traces of Berkeley's abandoned artistic legacy. Cal students practiced dance routines on Sproul Plaza, for a crowd near Zellerbach Hall. A faceless manikin in a store window looked out on a dead city wondering, "where have the independent book stores,craft artisans, street musicians, artists and sundry intellectuals gone?" Kudos to Boris Eifman for his stylish, avant-garde ballet, "Anna Karen ina" performed at Cal Performance last Sunday, March 11th. Eifman's dancers are lean, honed, metallic comets of speed and flashing motion. Eifman's ballet; a model of "scenic psychoanalysis" is a study of Karenina's descent into despair and suicide, as a result of a tragic love triangle and unresolvable conflict between her roles as mother, wife, lover. The smoldering eroticism of the ballet is reminiscent of the dancing style of the late Rudolf Nureyev. Somber stage sets, haunting music, incense, sex, prayers and rituals of purification occur as the ballet unveils, for the soul of Anna Karenina is on fire. View er beware for Eifman's ballet insists that the audience participate in rituals of regression, self purification and pathos. It is impossible to watch this ballet and not be singed by shadows of past love and lost possibility. True to psychoanalytic form Anna seeks integration of her multiple identities....

Lily is a ninety-one year old Asian American calligrapher. She will retire in April and will be donating her life's work to a local university. I met her two weeks ago at an art exhibit where she was displaying several of her water color scrolls. Our spirits touched and Lily invited me to visit a class she has been teaching for twenty-five years. Lily asked me what my favorite flower was. Chrysanthemum, I replied and she painted me three gold chrysanthemums and a dragonfly. I watched intently as Lily painted the flowers and her brush strokes were so perfect it was as though they were choreographed. She told me that she began to learn calligraphy and brush painting when she was eleven years old and living in occupied territory. "There was so much pain after the war," she said.
