Fairy Tale Inspired Short Story - PHONE CALLS AND DWARFS
2007-09-24 17:54:00
Phone Calls and DwarfsbyDorlana Vann“Hello,” she answered her phone for the third time since I sat down. “I told you not to call me anymore.”I didn’t hear the phone ring once.Happy, a petite woman in her thirties, moved into my neighborhood two weeks before. Since I had a day off from work, I finally had a chance to walk over and say hello. She introduced herself and welcomed me into her home. I didn’t know what to think after witnessing her bizarre behavior. The first time it happened I thought that maybe she was deaf and had some special code, like a blinking light or something connected to the phone, so when it rang it gave her some sort of noiseless communication. But the second time she answered it she seemed to be listening attentively to me. She stared me straight in the eyes when right in the middle of my sentence she said, “Oh, just a minute,” and picked up the phone. Her conversation carried on just about the same way this third call went. So, after the secon...

Guest Fairy Tale Poem #4
2007-09-17 16:45:00
A Fairy Tale LifebyDoris RobertsI never anticipated within a thousand years,That the force of fate would arise above my tears. For here am I, a life wrapped in utter shameUnsuspecting of events caused by my allocated name.Childhood was a nightmare of disturbing responsibility. From my mom and family came vicious hostilities.Growing up in a world of relentless hate.Created surroundings of tremendous heartache. Then the day came joy entered our distressed home. For the Prince of the land opened horizons of a new zone. His Lordship decided it was time for marriage.Proclamation was sent by a man in a red carriage.Come one, come all, eligible ladies attend the ball! For the Prince will wed the fairest found at the castle hallOh, that I could go, just to prove my worth. That’s a laugh! I don’t even have a taffeta skirt. As functions drew nigh, time for the ball, oh yes.My sisters looked fabulous with their carriage and beautiful dress. Now I’m alone. How I longed to dance with the Prince.But...

Jaclyn's Ghost - Chapter 1
2007-09-14 13:22:00
JACLYN’S GHOSTbyDorlana VannChapter 1 – Another One Bites the DustJaclyn Jade felt the sensation of a trillion tiny needles prickling just beneath the surface of her skin. She opened her eyes to darkness. “Why am I standing on my bed?” Gradually, the tingling faded, but the overwhelming contentment made it difficult for her to shake the suspicion that something was terribly different. She squinted and blinked her eyes as she searched her bedroom for answers.Obviously, it was the middle of night. Even the earliest of the morning brought an orange glow through her sheer curtains. That’s when she realized she couldn’t remember anything about the day before.Jaclyn’s scan stopped abruptly when she came to an unfamiliar six-foot silhouette in the shape of a man. And then it moved. An intense involuntary shriek burst out of Jaclyn’s mouth. As she attempted to run, she stumbled over a huge lump in her bed and fell, face first, onto the floor. She recovered to her feet in a f...

What I’m working on Sept. 2007
2007-09-06 12:16:00
September is going to be a month of reminiscing, reposting, and revising. I plan to revise and repost my first fairy tale inspired short story this month, Phone Calls and Dwarfs. I really don’t remember why Snow White the Seven Dwarfs ended up in this story, but the story itself was inspired by an actual event. Sort of. I’ll repost those details later too. My main focus will be on my novel, Jaclyn’s Ghost, which I will be editing/revising. I’ll repost the first chapter later this month too. Even though I will not have a new story this month, I will be posting some great guest fairy tale poems inspired by Cinderella and Aladdin. Next month, for Halloween, I am going to try my hand at horror. This ought to be interesting. Just try not to laugh at it too much. But even if it doesn’t turn out to be scary, I can usually pull off weird. All I know right now is that I’m going to try and use Cinderella as my fairy tale. I’ve always avoided this fairy tale because it has bee...

Fairy Tale Poem - WINK
2007-08-28 14:03:00
WinkbyDorlana VannWink was an elf; lavender was his color. His world was made up of sunshine and magic. The sky was ginger and the trees were scarlet. All the ladies declared he was most charming. His kind parents urged him to settle downAnd to carry on his name and his beauty. He was set up with a girl with no beauty.Snow was sweet but lacked significant color.Wink spent the difficult night with his eyes down.Wishing Snow would change by way of white magic. The more she spoke the more she did seem charming. If only she were pink, or lovely scarlet.Suddenly the sky turned an evil scarlet. If this was a trick it sure was a beauty.Wink tried saying something funny and charming. But he was nervous by this change in color.Brilliant radiance beamed from this strange magic.Wink and Snow thought their heaven was falling down.Wink woke with no idea of what went down.He didn’t smell the sweet fragrance of scarletFlowers. And didn’t see his world of magic. And the girl, Snow, was gone along with be...

Guest Fairy Tale Short Story - Creature Comfort
2007-08-13 16:22:00
Creature ComfortbyVictor DiGiovanni“Everyone- Up off your lazy arses! Right now!”Gawight’s nasally bleating continued for some minutes as he went from room to room rousing the castle’s entire staff. It was the middle of the night and a freezing cold one at that. Gawight, the queen’s own manservant, was dripping wet and looked none too pleased himself. However, that didn’t prevent him from taking a perverse glee in awakening us from our sound sleep. We gathered in the largest of the servants’ quarters rubbing our bleary eyes and scratching our various itchy body parts. Well, except for old Plete, of course. When Gawight saw that we were all more or less present and attentive, he laid out our task for the remainder of the night.“The queen has requested twenty mattresses and twenty quilts be brought to the guest bedchamber immediately. We’ll pull from the guest bedrooms first and then we’ll start using our own mattresses if need be.”None of us moved or uttered a so...

What I'm working on August 2007
2007-08-08 15:31:00
My husband suggested a story for me this month: Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving. I am slightly familiar with it, but I printed it out to read. Then I asked my daughter and her boyfriend and about supernatural element I could add. Anyway, it looks like aliens and elves. You know, I’m a little worried about this months challenge, but we’ll see. Good thing I will be posting a story by a guest writer this month. He has written a really amusing and fun short story inspired by the fairy tale “The princess and the pea.”I just joined two sites: Gather.com and Zoetrope.com.Gather.com looks like it is a very interesting community, which translates to time consuming. I’m just now driving around the neighborhood trying to get a feel for it. You join groups, make friends, and post articles all the while collecting points. I’ve posted two “articles” this month.Zoetrope.com is for writers. You can sign up in one of the areas (short stories, novella’s screenplays, poetry, et...

Fairy Tale Inpired Short Story - Quiet on the Nightingale
2007-08-01 06:12:00
Quiet on the NightingalebyDorlana VannJoey was wearing his usual work attire: black pants, black shirt, black mask and gloves. But his job was never in the same location. This time it was on the Nightingale, a 60-foot million-dollar yacht owned by Mr. King. (Joey had never heard a first name.)The little splashes of invisible water were rather eerie in the dark. And every now and again a boat would bump against the dock ever so slightly, making Joey tense for a second. But he didn’t hear anyone else walking around outside at the moment. He had the pier to himself. Before putting a foot on board, he stopped for a second to make sure Mr. King and his guests were asleep. He could easily tell the difference between thoughts and dreams. He eavesdropped on Mr. King; he was hunched in the middle of a small cage while hundreds of cats clawed at him through the bars. Fear of cats. Joey considered himself quite the dream interpreter. He could sit and listen to people’s dreams all night. The...

The Night was DarkbyDoria AnemarieThe night was dark; I was lonelyI almost gave up looking for my one and onlyUntil during the storm, I heard a knockBut, at first, it didn’t make my heart stopThere was no way to believe she was whom she saidHer makeup smeared, clothes soak, she looked almost deadBut there was this sparkle that lit in her eyeAnd there was no way I could let her walk byOh, how do you tell whether she’s right? We will soon find out after the nightNo one told her about the secret that waitsWhich will determine the truths of her traitsWhen she woke the truth was saidShe found the small pea that lay beneath her bedCan you believe her story was true? Now I will no longer be searching and blueShe is really a princess I took her through the testNow we will live happy and always blessed

Isabella's Dark Night - Chapter 2
2007-07-23 17:43:00
Isabella's Dark Night byDorlana VannChapter 2Friday April 29, 2005James was sitting on the couch in his brother’s living room examining the diamond engagement ring he had bought for Bella. It was small, in comparison to Bella’s friends’ rings, but that was because she liked her jewelry dainty, nothing too big or flashy. Even though he didn’t know much about diamond cuts or carats, he knew it was the perfect ring for her.The only thing that wasn’t perfect was his timing. At that moment, he was asking himself why he hadn’t given it to her before. Why hadn’t he made that commitment to her years ago? He closed his hand around the symbol of his love for her.If he had asked her before, they would have been married, and she wouldn’t have just thrown him out of “her” house like that. It would have been their house and they could have worked out their differences.“You going to work today?”James looked up at his brother, Colt. They both worked at Kit’s Auto shop. Th...

Sweet and InnocentbyJFaySweet and innocent the babe was born.Little one too young to scorn.Every gift given may not be fair.Evil doth exist to draw us in its lair.Pity that is given may not be suffice. It cannot detract from the evil device.Nothing is spared in protecting this lassGiven to others till the threat has passed. But in the end the prophecy rang true.Every one in this land seemed doomed.Alas will anyone be able to erase.Ultimate ruination and total disgrace.Tis a miracle of light and joy.Young love hath conquered this plight of foy. This acrostic poems was inspired, of course, by the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. What I'm working on - July 2007
2007-07-07 15:22:00
It has been a busy month already. The summer days are longer, but for some reason I seem to get less done. I haven’t even had a chance to think about a fairy tale until today. I’ve been reading a few this morning and I think I have found one I would like to use for inspiration: Jorinda and Joringel by the Grimm Brothers. I have never heard of it before, but after reading it, I wonder why. It is a great little love story with a wicked witch that can turn into an owl and a cat. It has a blood-red magical flower and seven thousand birds. You can read the fairy tale here. I have no idea what I’m going to do with it yet, but I would like to include telepathy in my story.I have two guest fairy tale poets this month. Sleeping Beauty and The Princess and the Pea were the inspiration for their poems.Hope your day is lucky!Dorlana

Fairy Tale Inspired Short Story - THE HOLIDAY
2007-06-28 12:32:00
The Holiday ByDorlana VannI never imagined I would be able to do it. But there I was, alone, at one of those Halloween adult dress-up parties. I let my friend, Hillary, talk me into wearing something skimpy. She called it alluring. You have to show off those glorious legs. I dressed as—Oh my goodness, I don’t even know if I can admit it now—but I was a playboy bunny. And wouldn’t you know it, instead of the normal South Texas weather, hot to moderately cool, it was snowing. I kid you not, it was white, and I was freezing.Furthermore, I walked into a party where the only person I knew was the host. And if I’m going to tell this story truthfully, I must admit that I’m just a tad older then most playmates...put together. Well, not exactly, but that was the way I felt.I am old enough to know better. I’m old enough to stop telling people my age. And I’m old enough to consider not putting color in my hair. But that night, I was glad I hadn’t made that decision yet.The hos...

Sonnet to Old Man Winter
2007-06-22 15:26:00
Sonnet to Old Man Winter byDorlana VannYou’re a vision in white; lightly sun kissed.Your touch can be soft and your rhythm slow. You take my breath away with your crispness.Your name echoes with the breeze, Morozko.I met you in the bitter woods that day.Your trick question I answered with the truth. Please tell me, what was I suppose to say?To blatantly lie would have been uncouth.Your mood changes from slightly cool to harsh.Your nature is biting; naturally cruel.Your icy winds went straight through my cold heart. You gave me chilling death, my sister jewels.Respect Old Man Winter, father would say.I’ll pay my respects...in the month of May.My inspiration for this poem was the Russian fairy tale Morozko (Old Man Winter). This was my first attempt at a Sonnet. It was quite a challenging.Supernatural Fairy Tales

Isabella's Dark Night - Chapter 1
2007-06-20 13:51:00
ISABELLA’S DARK NIGHTbyDorlana VannChapter 1 Thursday April 14, 2005 “That was so freaking boring,” James Roberts said as he rolled down the passenger side window. “Please don’t ever make me sit through one of those again.” He opened his mouth and let out an exaggerated yawn.“Really?” Isabella said. “I found it fascinating. Would you mind? With the window...we still have dinner.”He pressed the button and the window made its way back up. “That’s just because they are your parents. The greatest archeology team in the whole universe.” He turned on the air conditioner.Isabella Stewart shivered in her strapless summer dress. But James was wearing a suit and tie, which she had insisted he wear. He had complained about it until they were seated at the HESS club for the lecture. She really didn’t want to get him started again on how hot and uncomfortable the “stupid thing” was so she didn’t say anything about being cold. “That’s not it,” she said. “I...

A Common YarnbyDarah PaigeA common yarn as you might guess,Of an uncommon sorrow,For certain death to fear in the morrow;A father’s boasting to an awful mess. For certain riches he was told; The greed had him overcame. No surprise if his end was the same,Because his promise he could not hold. One heart broken, one heart lost,She had not the talent or the skill,But a strange lad came to her window sill;He could do the task, but only at a cost.Twice was gold, the last a token--She escaped her fate unaware. For the certain promise she’d yet to bear:A child lost was one heart again broken. This poem was inspired by the fairy tale RumplestilzchenRead more about this week’s guest poet here: Humble Fiction Cafe: A Post from the Mind of Darah.....If you have a fairy tale poem and would like to submit it for consideration, email here.· I will include a link to your site or blog with your poetry.· The poem must be fairy tale related and PG13.· It can be any style, just include the type in ...

What I'm reading - Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe
2007-04-10 12:55:00
I have just started reading “Robin son Crusoe” the classic tale by Daniel Defoe. I’m sure everyone is familiar with the story, as am I, but I have never just sat down to read it. One of the first things I noticed was the extremely long sentences. There are only three periods on the first page. It is a little distracting, but I’m already getting a lot out of the story. It is the type of story that causes one to pause and analyze life.Okay, and this doesn’t really have anything to do with the story, just a thought I had about the way people spoke and wrote during Defoe’s lifetime: when I watched the comedy “Idiocracy” (2006) the other day, starring Luke Wilson, an average guy who is frozen in modern times wakes up in the year 2505 to find he is the smartest man on earth, and everyone has a difficult time understanding what he’s saying, because the dialect has become a mix of hillbilly, valley girl, and slang, it made me start thinking: if an average person from the ye...

What I'm working on - April 2007
2007-04-01 15:40:00
His apartment was on the top floor. But no one would have bothered him anyway. Everyone knew he was a vampire. That was why it was so strange when the knock came at his door..“May I help you?” he said, but was thinking, Magnificent, take out delivered to my door..“Excuse us sir,” said the first young man of two. “I realize we are being rude, coming unannounced, but you’re not listed.”.“There is a reason for this,” the vampire said.Above is the tentative beginning for my next supernatural fairy tale. I haven’t named it yet, but I am using the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, THE EMPERIOR'S NEW SUIT for inspiration. I am planning on having the story up by the end of this month.I am also still writing/editing my novel, Isabella’s Dark Night. But I’m still not ready to post the first chapter. However, I will be posting the 3rd chapter of Jaclyn’s Ghost soon.Have a great April fools day,Dorlana.*Supernatural Fairy Tales*

What I'm reading - Forever Odd, by Dean Koontz
2007-03-08 14:30:00
I have some catching up to do. I’m reading my first ever Dean Koontz book, Fore ver Odd, and I love it. My daughter, who believes Koontz is better than King, picked it up at Barnes and Noble the other day. I decided I would give it a try. I’m on chapter eight, but by chapter two, I was captivated. It is suspenseful, humorous, and about ghosts and a psychic—What more could I want? Apparently this is a sequel, but I didn’t need to read the first one to comprehend this second one, but it will definitely be my next book purchase. So, like I said, I have some catching up to do...how many books has Koontz written?Dorlana .*Supernatural Fairy Tales*
