Fav Five Fairy Tale Inspired Movies
2008-04-11 13:59:00
Here are my top five favorite fairy tale inspired movies. After I collected them, I found a few things they had in common: I’m already a big fan of one or more of the cast members (except for Enchanted); they have romance (except for Hoodwinked) and comedy.I would love to know your favorites! Any from my list?DorlanaP.S. I know there are a lot of other actors who starred in some of these movies, but I kind of just highlighted my favorites. Tiny Little Spoiler AlertThe Brothers Grimm 2005– (Tagline - Eliminating Evil Since 1812) - Starring: Heath Ledger, Matt Damon This movie had all the elements that I look for in a movie and in a fairy tale; It was moderately dark, quirky, and supernatural. The cast was terrific, and it is a rare movie that I can watch over and over again. This is where it all begins. (It is so sad about Heath Ledger - and it will probably be a little while before I'm able to watch this again.)Ever After 1998 - (Tagline - Desire. Defy. Escape.) Starring: Drew ...

What's up for April 2008
2008-04-04 14:09:00
Hi everyone! How was y'alls April fools day? My 4-year-old son made up his own April fools joke - Was the cat wearing the hat? - He really enjoyed "joke day." So what's up for April? Well, our guest writer will be Wendy Koenigsmann. Her dark tale, inspired by the Slavic fairy Rusalka, will be this month's featured short story. Also this month, I'm going to list my favorite fairy tale movies. I couldn't believe the amount of fairy tale movies out there until I started rounding them up. But now that I did, I have a list of new ones to watch and rewatch. Plus, I was honored with my first blog award by Fairie Kat with an E is for excellent blog award. By accepting this award, I am now to honor 10 more blogs for excellence. What fun! Thanks so much Fairie Kat. I had two author interviews last month Studio 3B's Authors in the Spotlight and ManicReaders. They were a lot of fun - but oh my goodness - was I surprised at how difficult it was to answer questions about me. You would th...

SFT Presents: Guest Writer - Gary S.Denton
2008-03-25 20:23:00
Flint and Steelby Gary S. Denton Inspired by Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Tinder Box”Tommy Trammel stepped off the bus into a dusty Arkansas crossroads. The folding door shut behind him, and the big Greyhound lurched away leaving a black cloud of exhaust to mix with the red dust of the country road.Tommy lifted a hand to shield his face, and adjusted his duffle bag on his shoulders. The late afternoon sun cut shafts of yellow light through the airborne silt, and Tommy could already feel the damp spots where his army uniform clung to his back and chest. He shifted his load once more and attached a dark, sheathed sword to his belt so that it rested comfortably by his side. The sword had German markings, and the hilt was fashioned like an eagle spreading its wing. He had found it in a bunker near a Russian farmhouse and had carried it all the way home. He wasn’t about to let it drop on the gravel road.“Hey there!” A voice called from across the road.Tommy turned in the dir...

Six Word Memoir Game of Tag
2008-03-05 16:12:00
I’ve been tagged by TamaraMy assignment was to write a six word memoir. My goodness, it was difficult. I traced the tag back to the blog First Draft: Leonardo Likes Gulls Here’s what she wrote about it, “What would you say if you had to summarize your life in only six words? Bookbabie got the idea from a book written by Larry Smith and Rachel Fershleiser, Not Quite What I was Expecting: Six Word Memoir s by Famous and Obscure. It is a compilation based on the story that Hemingway once bet ten dollars that he could sum up his life in six words. His words were—For Sale: baby shoes, never worn.”OK. Here is my six word memoir -Love and worry: family/writing/lifeHere are the rules if I tagged you.1. Write your own six word memoir.2. Post it on your blog and include a visual illustration if you’d like.3. Link to the person that tagged you in your post.4. Tag five more blogs with links.5. And don’t forget to leave a comment on the tagged blogs with an invitation to play!"I tag...

What's up for March 2008!
2008-03-01 15:04:00
Gary Denton, a friend and fellow member of Humble Fiction Café, will be writing this month’s fairy tale inspired short story. He has accepted the challenge of choosing a fairy tale, Hans Christian Andersen's "The Tinder-box” and then writing a short story before month’s end. He’s a fantastic storyteller, and I look forward to reading his short story. The authors of Tease Publishing (Including the authors of the Dark Tarot Series) will be chatting live tonight, March 1, 2008 , at 9:00 pm EST at Coffee Time Romance. I’ve only participated (OK…read) once in a live chat, so if you show up, please don’t make too much fun of me. :) Hope to see everyone there. Also, I’m very excited about my new candle that Studio 3B is creating for Jaclyn’s Ghost. I’ve had a peek and it is tall and gorgeous. And for those of you who have read the book, you’ll be able to appreciate the scent… Laced Champagne. But the best news, I’m cooking up another contest so I can give one away!...

Fairy Tale Inspired Short Story - WEEPING LAKE
2008-02-26 13:18:00
Weeping LakeBy Dorlana VannVivian stood on the side of the lake. Her bright hair waved like the water as the wind graciously blew in from the south. She inhaled and then looked down at her newly acquired engagement ring. She had said yes, but she knew that wasn’t what she had meant. Everyone had been there, watching them, watching her with anticipated excitement. And since she did love and respect Scott, she didn’t want to humiliate him by saying no.But it was just too soon. She didn’t expect to marry the first guy she had fallen in love with. She wanted to love many men. She wanted to experience life and joy and … freedom. She hated — for him — that she wasn’t ready. She easily slipped the ring off of her finger and let the sunlight sparkle off of the massive diamond. A diamond that must have put Scott back a months salary. A diamond that said, “You belong to me.” She only wanted to belong to herself. It seemed to happen all at once: softly she heard her name, a gus...

Review - Garden Spells a novel by Sarah Addison Allen
2008-02-08 15:17:00
You Can’t Judge a Book by its First Chapter. A book Review by DorlanaIt is really difficult for me to find a book that suits me. I love stories, obviously, and I love to read. Since I don’t have a lot of time to read, I have to be really picky. Which means, if it hasn’t grabbed my attention early on, I normally don’t continue. When I saw Garden Spells on the shelves in the book store I immediately wanted to read it because of the cover, the title, and the blurb. I knew for sure that this was a book that I had to read.I was so excited when I sat down and opened the book. Perhaps it was the high hopes and expectations I had put on this novel, but I was ready to toss it after the first chapter. I complained to my husband and cursed the book, “Stupid book.” But then, I did something uncharacteristic of me (with books); I gave it another chance.I read on, even struggling a bit with the second chapter. Funny thing, I had been right to judge it by its cover, title, and blurb, be...

Your candle will be shipped to you directly from Studio3b. Please e-mail me your mailing address Blackroze37.I am going to celebrate Valentines Day this month by writing a romance. I’m not sure if it will be dark or sweet. I thought the story of The Frog King by the Grimm brothers would be appropriate, but I can’t decide on the supernatural element. I have a little time to think about this and was wondering if anyone would like to help me out. If anyone comments with a supernatural element before Monday Feb. 4th (so I will have time to build the story) I will use it for my short story this month. Also this month, I want to show some love to a few great fairy tale blogs I have been introduced to lately and review the book I’m reading, Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen. Rumpelstilzchen inspired short story - Of All the Luck
2008-01-23 18:06:00
Of all the Luck byDorlana VannGood Luck is an illusion. I had to learn the hard way that there are only three types of luck: Extreme, Medium, and Weak. Of course there are different degrees to each of these. I used to fit pretty close into the Medium.I walked through the front door a little after midnight. Jana sat on the couch in the darkness, the images of the television reflecting on her solemn face. “Oh, you’re up,” I said as I gave her a kiss on the cheek.“I want to talk to you, Trevor.”I caught a glimpse of deep concern in her eyes. I immediately thought something had happened to the baby. “Is Chad OK?”“He’s a handful to deal with by myself… but he’s fine.”“Good… good,” I said. That’s all I needed to know. I could go on to bed because anything else could wait until morning. “Well, goodnight.” I turned and walked down the hallway.I didn’t get very far. She yelled after me: “I hired a P.I.!”“You did what?” I stormed back into the room...

Movie Review - 27 DRESSES by guest reviewer Carolyn Nguyen
2008-01-21 14:21:00
27 Dresses : Another Cinderella Tale?byCarolyn NguyenWARNING - CONTAINS SPOILERS27 Dresses reads like a Cinderella tale, starting with a grieving father and his two daughters. His eldest, Jane (Katherine Heigl), takes upon the responsibility of looking after her family, thus eschewing all the qualities desired in a Cinderella heroine: 'pretty, loyal, dedicated to their household chores, modest and docile and sometimes a little stupid' (Mourey, cited by Zipes, 1993). However, martyring herself for her family is not enough, Jane has to look after everyone. Her inability to say 'no', makes her a willing victim for 27 'bridezillas', and the proud(?) owner of 27 hideous, bridesmaid dresses.Jane's passivity causes her to give up George (her dream prince) and her perfect wedding to sister Tess. It is here where 27 Dresses departs from the Cinderella formula. There is no enchantment, no fairy godmother to set things right. Jane is doomed to be 'always a bridesmaid, never the bride'....

Movie Review - ENCHANTED - by guest reviewer Gary Denton
2008-01-14 12:32:00
Teenaged Boys Become Enchanted by Gary Denton I saw Enchanted with my 8 year-old daughter and two disgruntled teenage boys who wanted to see the PG-13 rated Juno, but opted out at the last minute due to one very adamant mother who insisted that her child not see a comedy about teen pregnancy. The boys sat low in their chairs and stared straight forward at the blank screen in abject silence. I mean- could this be more of a chick-flick?However, my daughter was more receptive and by the end of the film- so where the boys :)If you don't want all the details below, then let me sum it up for you in three words:Cliche', Silly, Entertaining.Enchanted starts off as a blatantly cookie-cutter disney princess story. Even the classic-look animation can't shake you out of the feeling that you've seen this film a hundred times, and it borrows quite liberally and intentionally from all of those other films. You can follow the formula right along in your handy Disney Princess Movie program:The cu...

Happy New Year!
2008-01-02 20:52:00
Supernatural Fairy tales had a good first year with a little over 5,000 visitors. Yay! I don’t think I would have accomplished so much — 7 new fairy tale inspired short stories, 12 poems, and the rough draft of my fairy tale inspired novel — if it hadn’t been for the goals this blog has inspired each month, and for my writing group, Humble Fiction Cafe, Thanks for all the kind words and encouragement. As for 2008, I probably will not write any more poetry. It was just a passing curiosity (Thankfully, that has passed.) But I did learn a lot – mostly that poetry is difficult and gives me a headache when trying to write it – and I have a gained new respect for all of you real poets out there! I would love to add your fairy tale inspired poetry to the blog, so please email me if you wish to share. I’m also interested in other contributions from guest writers, click here for more info.I do plan to try to keep to a once-a-month-short-story, and hope to have the stories from 2...

Excerpt - Fairy tale inspired young adult novel - AFTER MIDNIGHT
2007-12-19 15:50:00
AFTER MIDNIGHTbyDorlana VannPart ITanner and Yulia Chapter 1He slouched on his old bed in his new room staring at all the taped-up cardboard boxes that surrounded him. He hadn’t opened one. Moving so often when he had been in elementary and junior high hadn’t been so terrible, but now everyone already had their clique. In the morning he would be shoved into a done society, and have to learn who to avoid, who to be friends with, and actually who Tanner Dobbs would be. If his family would have moved at the beginning of the school year, fitting in probably would have been a minor challenge, but no, school had started a month before. “She hates me,” Tanner muttered to himself. He managed to drag himself up and off his bed but only made it to his window. He half-mindedly looked down at his new lawn, new street, and new neighborhood, trying not to let his true concern surface. Worrying about the move only temporarily eased the stress that his family had split apart. His dad had d...

But first, I am very pleased to announce that my novel has been accepted as part of Tease Publication’s Dark Tarot Line, which features dark (paranormal, mystery, dark fantasy, etc.) literature based on the Vertigo and the Archeon tarot decks. My novel, JACLYN’S GHOST, will represent The Death Card. There are 22 cards/titles, all with fabulous artwork by Stella Price of Twilight Industries and Kendra Egert of Scrap Fairy Designs . There will even be a deck of tarot cards available. The End - Yay, I wrote my 50,000 words for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo.) What a challenge! My biggest problem was that I was finished with the story at around 45,000 words. So, I had to go back to the beginning. To straight write the 1600 or so words per day took me about 2 hours. To edit/write and get that amount of words took around 6 hours. But that was only the last few days, so… Overall, I am pleased with the rough draft of my Rapunzel inspired young adult novel, AFTER MIDNIGHT. I pl...

A Look at Elves and Fairies.By Paul Dale Robe rts - HPI Elficologist & FairyologistYep! I am snatching up two more titles to place under my belt. Call me an Elficologist and a Fairyologist. Because I am going to give you, the reader a fast history lesson on elves and fairies. Have I ever hunted fairies and elves? Well sort of. When I went to Ireland, I was looking for the elusive leprechaun. Of course I never found a leprechaun, but I did travel down fairy path at Dublin Castle. Then the most recent Mount Shasta excursion, in which a dozen paranormal investigators went looking for ghosts, UFOs, Bigfoot, the Last of the Lemurians and fairies. Dwarfs and fairies have been seen going in and out of the caverns near Mount Shasta. But, I believe these dwarfs and fairies have their origins to the infamous 'grays' of UFO lore. There is a lot that connects fairies to UFO lore, let's look over some of the examples. Fairy Circles could be interpreted in modern times as crop circles or UFO...

NaNo and Next Month
2007-11-21 15:50:00
Here I am 9 days left to type out the last 14,000 words or so. I’ve hit a couple of days where I wasn’t able to write at all, because I had nothing to write – complete wall. So, I had to take the day to think about the story. I have also been very worried about having enough story to make 50,000 words. I guess I'm used to the short story form and having the month to just write a short story, not an entire novel. Anyway, finally I am getting excited about my story, all the elements are beginning to come together and things are making sense.A couple of new things I have been doing this month, beside NaNoWriMo, are My Space and looking into podcasting.Come by and drop me a friend request. www.myspace.com/sfairytalesPodcasting – I am thinking about making my stories available through this method. It is all very new to me and I’m just now reading about it and trying to comprehend the ins and outs, but it looks like fun and hopefully sometime at the beginning of next year, I...

Exerpt from my NaNoWriMo
2007-11-14 14:46:00
Excerpt fromAFTER MIDNIGHTByDorlana VannYulia Webster thought she would have made an amazing chef, but her mom had never taught her to cook and had actually forbidden her to use anything in the kitchen other than the microwave. Every time Yulia had asked if she could help her mom and aunts make tamales or even just help out with dinner, she’d said, “No daughter of mine is going to waste her life slaving over a stove.” Her mom had told her countless times that if she showed Yulia around the kitchen and taught her the traditional recipes, it would have been expected, and she would never be able to escape the female “family curse.” She wanted better things for her daughter.Even though her mother had acted as if every hour in the kitchen was a dreaded event, Yulia knew that if she would have been allowed, it wouldn’t have been a chore but a way to express her artistic energy. Now, since her mom had died, she wished she would have tried harder to convey her desire to create....
Week 1 - NaNoWriMo
2007-11-07 14:50:00
Day 1 – I started writing at 5:30 am and had 1679 words by 8:15 am. Pretty good start. I slowed down at page 4, almost 1,000 words in, and came to a complete stand still for a couple of minutes. Normally, when I’m writing at my own pace, I would have stopped here and called it a day. But I pressed on and, after a couple of hundred difficult words, got back on pace to finish at 1679, which was pretty much the end of the first chapter. That’s when I realized that a chapter a day was the way I want to go. If I’m at the end of my book before chapter 30, I will just have to go in and add scenes where needed in the previous chapters.I’m going to have three different ways of keeping track of my story –• One big file (so I can send it to NaNoWriMo website)• By chapters – I will copy and paste each chapter to its own file for easier editing when I’m finished.• Print out each chapter and put them in there own folder – paper backup and a place to put notes if I so need ...

I will not be writing a fairy tale inspired short story in November; I’m going to write a novel...I hope.Since November is the official National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) I have decided to start my supernatural fairy tale inspired novel – For those of you unfamiliar with NaNoWriMo, here’s how it goes - Participants are to write 50,000 words in the 30 days of November. That is basically it. I have signed up on their site, and I am joining the other 90,000 who have decided to freak themselves out for a month – I’m going to use Supernatural Fairy Tales blog for updates and perhaps an excerpt or two as I progress. On the right-side panel is a meter that I will update every morning after I write. Should keep me on my toes…The tentative title for my young adult novel (13 and older ) is POPPI and I’ll be using a couple of characters from my Rapunzel inspired short story The Tower , but I’ll have new main characters. Plus, of course, I’ll have supernatural elements ...
Cinderella Inspired Short Story - MIDNIGHT - Part II
2007-10-29 11:09:00
MidnightbyDorlana VannPart II (The conclusion)Read Midnight Part I hereThe long white dress sat low on my shoulders, tightened unmercifully around my waist and then ballroomed out to the floor. I squeezed my eyes together, hoping that when I opened them again, my delusions wouldn’t soon include the ghosts of my parents. My eyes opened when a sudden gust of wind just about lifted me off the floor. I became completely nauseated by the change of scenery. Straight back chairs filled the room and were divided by a center aisle. The guests were now all sitting down, but were turned toward me, silent, and with their masks still pressed against their faces. When I felt something tug at my dress, I turned around, and there were three little girls holding the train of my dress. A wedding dress. Obviously, a nightmare.“Stella.” The echo seemed to travel from the back of the room and then reverberate loudly when it reached my ears. This sent a new sensation up my spine and around my neck th...

Cinderella Inspired short story - MIDNIGHT
2007-10-22 12:53:00
MidnightbyDorlana Vann Part I“All black doesn't suit you," Dominick said. "I think you should choose softer more delicate colors.""Delicate?” I said. “Seriously... do I look delicate?”He grinned like he had me all figured out."Tuh...You are such an idiot." When I spun to leave his presence, he grabbed hold of my arm. I didn't turn around, but I didn't pull away either."I want you to come to my Halloween party." He placed a piece of paper in my hand. Finally, after I didn’t answer, he let me go. I walked down the hall, not looking back until I was about to turn the corner. The bastard was still there, stationary, as the student body seemed to move around him at an accelerated speed. Our eyes remained locked, until a wall replaced my view."You should stay away from him," Amanda, my stepsister/cousin/shadow said. I know; it grosses me out too. My mom died a year ago, and my aunt— her only sister— moved right in. Two months later, she became my step mom. My dad died thre...

Cinderella Inspired Poem - DEAR MOM
2007-10-15 14:01:00
Dear MombyDorlana VannCinders on your face and hands, so you said.Instead of supper, you were sent to bed.No one to play with—No huge castle walls.Dined on the cold floor like one of the dogs.Everyday I must hear your sad stories.Really Mother, they are getting boring.Ella, you start, you are so very blessed.Living the sweet life of a spoiled princess.Let me live it and make my own mistakes. And you’ll see peace is not a futile trait.Since Cinderella won in the poll as favorite fairy tale, see side bar, and since I am using it for my short story this month, I decided to revise and repost my Cinderella inspired acrostic poem. Can you just imagine what you would have to live up to if you were Cinderella’s daughter? Gives new meaning to the parent’s old stand by, “When I was a kid…”
