The sound of paper tearing woke Freddy up. And just in time. Her dreams were not something she would have wanted to continue that night.Newsprint does not rip cleanly in both directions. It can be ripped straight up and down in one direction, but cannot be torn precisely in a horizontal line.There were no images in her dreams. No people, no guns, no scary trees or gravestones. There were colors, flowing like rivers and dripping like blood. Dripping from where, she didn?t know. And the colors? she could not identify the colors. When she woke she knew they were colors, but could not have told anyone what colors they were. Freddy walked slowly home that night, underneath the starlike lamps along the curb, lost in her own thoughts, many of them just the mundane thoughts any twenty year old girl would have, and many of them skirting around the subject of her only-recently-ex boyfriend and many more of them fluttering past the question of when she would tell Mom that they?d broken up. It hadn?t even been anything big that broke them up. She thought maybe that it was just that she didn?t want to live with anyone.She was almost at her apartment building when she heard the thump-thump-thump of that song again. Lois? song, whatever it was she?d been playing. Hey, everyone! Did you know that in addition to Under the Eyes Of God, I write four other blogs? If you didn't, here's a sample of what you've been missing:BABIES! BABIES! PETS! PETS! This is another picture from the weekend of all the kids; we took them all to the local zoo, too. The younger ones were not very impressed by the zoo at all. My theory is that to Babies!, everything is all new. We grown-ups are used to seeing trucks and houses and things, so to get us excited, you've got to put a giraffe in front of us. Model Rockets have solid fuel. The Engines for a model rocket are cardboard tubes filled with powder that combusts and sends the heat and energy blasting down to launch the rocket up into the air. They do not have the Power to launch the model Rocket into space. Model Rockets always fall back to Earth, and generally land close to where they started.Claudius started model Rocketry using kits. The smallest Rockets were cardboard tubes and balsa-wood popsicle sticks, small plastic nose cones that were attached by elastic and had a flimsy plastic Parachute inside. He never understood how the Process worked that sprung the nosecone free, could not figure out the mechanism that allowed the Rocket to land safely even though no conscious intelligence guided it. The Rocket would launch, and at apogee, the nose cone popped out and the Parachute (hopefully) opened and the rocket drifted back down. By the light of day, like most things that happen in the middle of the night, the knocking sound had come to seem something like a dream and somewhat less threatening.Not so the emptiness, the feeling that everything had disappeared. Mari could not shake the feeling, the certainty, that everything but her and Austin had, in fact, been evaporated or disintegrated. She did not dwell on the thought; she avoided it like she would chewing on the side of her mouth that had a cavity. She steered clear of the hole that reality had become, and instead thought about the knock.She sat at her kitchen table, grateful for once for the sunlight which streamed in through the wide, tall windows looking out the front of the house.
