The Deal (Part Nine)
2008-05-28 19:07:00 He has migraines and they cause flashing lights and really hurt him, his mom had said to grandma. We have to keep the drapes closed. He can't stand the light. He says that it flashes at him and the colors are weird. The doctor said that's common with migraines. He said they can see things.Jake could never see the things he wanted to."I don't want you to keep doing this, Jake," his dad said. "It's not funny and it's going to hurt your mom.""What will?""Jake, your mom does not want to be reminded that Robby died and it's not funny and I don't care if you're sick, you will be in trouble.""Robby died?"Jake searched his memory. He could not remember a conversation about Robby dying. He could remember Robby. He could remember Robby recently. His dad opened the door and got out of the car. "Come on. I don't know what's gotten into you.""Where's mom?" he asked. His dad opened the door. Jake wondered if he should pull away and wondered why he would think that."She's not home. She ... A real life terror
2008-05-28 18:57:00 Sometimes, when I can't get to sleep at night, I lie awake plotting my next horror story. I can do that because the bugaboos and vampires and creepy old women and shapeshifting demons that populate my stories are entirely made-up.There are real-life terrors, though, that keep me up at night, too. Like fire ants. Do you even know what fire ants can do to you? I do and I shudder to think about it at all. I, who can fall asleep picturing a centuries-old woman ripping off someone's eyeballs, don't want to picture fire ants at all. What I do want to picture is how to kill fire ants, and there's a place that can help with that. Click that link and you'll get all the information you need on recognizing and dealing with a fire ant infestation. Then you, like me, can go back to thinking about imaginary -- and less horrifying-- threats. More About: Life , Terror , Real , Real Life

The Deal (Part 8)
2008-05-24 17:56:00 It had come at 3 a.m.That much they would all agree on. But they did not talk about it.But it was at 3 a.m. that it had come and if they did talk about it they would agree on it.And they knew, without saying, without looking, even, that each and every other person had made the same decision at the same time.Everyone knew. The nurse and the principal knew. They could have asked Jim about it. They could have asked why he came when they had called Lily. But they didn't.They could have said "Yeah, where is Robby?" But they didn't.Because they had been awakened at 3 a.m., too. They were woken up at 3 a.m. too, Jake suddenly thought. Or heard. Or what? He couldn't tell. He thought it was a voice. His head snapped up and he looked at his dad. They were pulling into the driveway."Get some sleep?" asked his dad."What time is it?" Jake asked."It's about one," his dad said. "Want some help?" They were stopped, with the garage door rising up slowly. His dad was waiting to pull the car in. Jak... More About: Deal , Part
Don't Read This Alone!
2008-05-24 17:29:00 How's this for a horror story? A guy has a four day holiday weekend, and day one begins with a lot of football and great food to eat -- turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, snack mix, and three kinds of pie. So he spends the day happily eating himself into a two-times higher pants size and at the end of the day, just about asleep, hears his wife say:Oh, by the way, we have to get up at 5 a.m. to get to KBToys to pick up all the Christmas presents for the kids.I call it "Blackest Friday." Chills you right to the bone, doesn't it? If only that guy had some sort of silver bullet, some sort of talisman, something to help keep blackfriday-- the day after Thanksgiving, when the malls and stores are packed to the gills with people -- from being so terrible. If only he had, say, a website where they post those specials early and let you order them online -- getting all the Black Friday deals without getting up early. Then, he could have ordered all the toys for the Babies! online, going to ... The Deal (Part Six)
2008-05-16 15:24:00 Jake dreamed.Jake remembered.Jake dreamed...His mother came running into the room with a hand over her eyes, his father right behind her. There were red lights flashing on and off and on and off and on and off.She waved her hands. On and off, on and off. There hadn't been any movement at Donna's house. None at all.On and off, on and off, and then after some shaking there was a bright red glowing light. It hurt.A long time ago, he had crawled into bed with his mom and dad when he had a nightmare. His dad had picked him up and carried him back to his bed. Jake was crying, but his dad just kept going. Jake's mom followed behind, her arm stretched out just a little. Jake tried to reach out for her, put his hand out towards her. His dad had set him down in his bed."You have to sleep in your own bed," he said."I'm scared."Jake heard himself say it then and someone said it now. His dad shook his head. 2008-05-08 16:24:00 I have started a new site that will complement the 1 billion other blogs I have. That new site is My Dad Can Beat Up Your Dad.. Here's it's raison d'etre. (That's French. French, I'm told, is an actual language that people actually speak in countries that nobody actually respects.) Why "My Dad Can Beat Up Your Dad" exists:When I was a kid, I read comic books. Invariably, the best of all comic book storylines involved crossovers -- heroes meeting up or villains meeting up and battling it out.I have vivid memories of the comic book, which I had in giant size, in which Spider-Man met, and fought, Superman, only to turn around and fight Lex Luthor and Doc Octopus. I expect, when I get old, my memory of that fight, including [SPOILER ALERT INVOLVING RAY GUNS] the fact that Luther zapped Spiderman with a ray to make him stronger so that he could hold his own against Superman. Those crossovers and battles supreme were extensions of the things we'd say as kids -- My dad can beat up ... The Deal (Part Four)
2008-04-29 18:14:00 Nothing is much more lonely than 3 a.m.Lily woke at 3 a.m. that night. Jim was sleeping next to her. She heard him breathing, but did not feel anything. He was probably motionless a few feet away in the dark. She laid there, awake, but eyes closed. She never opened her eyes anymore when she woke up in the night. Not since that night a few weeks ago.The day after that night had been almost as strange as that night. She'd woken up. She and Jim had not talked that much in the morning, but they didn't usually talk that much. But this morning it seemed like there was more to it. Usually they didn't talk because they were drinking coffee, reading the paper, thinking about the day ahead. That day they didn't talk because they couldn't think what to say about it.She'd seen Jim off to the door. He walked out to the detached garage, pulling the door up. Up and down the street she saw a few other wives standing in the doorways, watching husbands leave. There were wives and husbands leaving... 2008-04-14 15:03:00 "When Jim gets home he'll run you home, Mom.""I could take a bus," Grandma said from the kitchen. Jake sat slumped at the dining room table looking glumly out the patio door into the backyard where the sun was shining and only a few leaves had actually even begun to turn colors."Don't be silly. It'll be no trouble. You can stay for dinner if you want.""I really shouldn't."Jake wondered why his grandma shouldn't stay for dinner."Come on. You never stay over for dinner anymore," his mom said. "It's the least we can do. You come and watch Jake and won't let us pay."Jake switched from the backyard to the clock. 1:30. Hours before his dad came home. He wondered if he should try to take a nap. The thought of going up to his bed made him sweaty."You okay, Jakey," his mom said, coming up to him with a glass of water. "You look pale.""I'm okay," said Jake."Maybe ... it's just a cold," his mom said, looking him in the eye."I don't think it's a cold," his grandma said, and came and ... 2008-04-08 15:17:00 "Jake. Jake! JAKE!" Jake rubbed his eyes and sat up. His mom was leaning down in front of him. It had sounded like she was shouting, but she was hissing right into his ear. "Get up, Jake. Hurry! Your dad is almost out of the shower."Jake looked around, disoriented. The sun was creeping up over the edge of the vacant lot across the street, painting the wall behind him orange in a gridwork of window frames and blinds. What was he doing down here?A flash vision: A red eye. A long nail... like a claw?He looked at his mom: "Don't let him get me."His mom hugged him. "I don't want to. Go upstairs."Jake ran up the stairs. He ran by the bathroom just as he heard the radio turn off, meaning Dad was done shaving and ready to come out. He skidded into his room and jumped on his bed. As he twisted the covers rolled onto him and his dad came into the room."Time to get up." His dad was no-nonsense in the morning. Time to get up meant feet on the floor, and Jake sat up as his dad turned around an... More About: Deal , Part

2008-04-04 15:10:00 There were only six more hours until Jake could get up.There were only 5 hours and 59 minutes until Jake could get up.He lay in his bed, watching the numbers on the digital clock next to him. He could make it through the night and then when Mom and Dad went to work and Grandma was here he could go to sleep in the clubhouse out back. Grandma wouldn't bother him. She didn't like to come outside in the heat. There were only 5 hours and 58 minutes until Jake could get up.There was a swish of a breeze. Jake stared fixedly at the glowing green numbers on the clock. There was another slight rustle. Jake refused to look. He told himself he would not look. He told himself just to stare at the clock. His eyes didn't listen, and they swept quickly over the room. You should never look quickly. You should take your time, because your eyes register everything and sends everything to your brain, but even the incredible cameras of your eyes cannot get all the detail in a split second and the brain,... Part 8: It wasn't so bad
2008-03-27 14:15:00 It wasn?t so bad during the day, and when the dead weren?t talking to her or trying to use her.Sometimes Lois had enough strength to talk to her.Freddy had made it back to her bed. She?d laid in her bed the rest of the morning, that first morning after the night she?d almost opened the door. She thought that had been a day or two after Lois? car crash, but wasn?t sure anymore. She?d crawled back to her bed, feeling warm and drowsy and sick to her stomach, and laid on her bed for a few minutes. Just about ready to fall asleep, as the sun rose outside her bedroom window, she?d opened her eyes slightly and saw, through her bedroom doorway, the door to the outside. She?d seen the chain on it, and the doorknob. And she saw her palm print on the doorknob, a smudge. That?s not enough she heard. She got up. She could barely walk. She?d pushed her bedroom door closed. She?d dragged her suitcase and a small chair and then her bed over in front of the bedroom door, barricading herself in, and fl... More About: Part

2008-03-18 14:10:00 Not wanting to think about what was happening to her, Freddy lay there for a long time. Her skin made its way slowly back to room temperature. Her heartbeat slowed down, and down, and down. After a while, she was warm and lethargic and felt like she would not be able to stand up.She lay on her back and looked over her shoulder at the door. She was still hungry. The door was upside down in her sight, locked and chained.Don?t go.The memory of a voice again. Her heart beat. Once. She waited for it to beat again, gave up.Who was talking? She wondered. Who had been talking? She remembered the night before, Lois? face, and Lois? words.?Don?t,? she?d said. Her eyes were still alive then. What else had she said?Freddy?s head began to ache. Her heart beat once? twice. Then not again for a while. Freddy waited. What else had Lois said??Look,? Freddy said aloud. ?Don?t. Part Five: And that scared her...
2008-03-08 15:13:00 ...And with that her heart beat three times in a row and a thrill ran up her spine, the shudder almost throwing her into the door. And that scared her because she was not excited about going out there, going through that door. She was not excited about it. But something was.She put her hand on the door. There was a lump in her throat. She put her fingers on the doorknob. Her lips grew dry. Her heart beat again, but she didn?t let that distract her. She twisted the knob and held it, ready to pull open, but not open, for a second, a minute, long enough for her pulse to throb in her ear again, and with that she ripped the door open and threw it back and threw herself into the next room.It was empty. She sat up and looked around. It was empty. The window was closed, the front door was closed (and, she saw, chained shut so nobody had left while she?d been in the other room), her kitchen was clean, her keys and her watch were, in fact, on the counter. Next to the stove. Where she?d put them... More About: Part , Scared

When she did, she at first wondered why she was laying on the floor in front of her bedroom door. She remembered the colors. She remembered the pain in her head, which was gone now, entirely gone without even the dull ache that sometimes was left after a sickness or hangover. She remembered someone saying ?yes.?She sat up sharply and looked at her bedroom door. It was open just a tiny sliver. She knelt, carefully, and looked at the space between the door and the jamb. She looked through it. She held her breath and peered through the tiny crack into the other room in her apartment. The only other room in her apartment. She felt like someone was out there. She could see the stove. It sat there, like it had the whole short time she?d rented the apartment. She could see the edge of the refrigerator. There was nothing there.She... More About: Wake , Part

Part Three: The Sound of Paper Tearing
2008-02-23 16:15:00 The sound of paper tearing woke Freddy up. And just in time. Her dreams were not something she would have wanted to continue that night.Newsprint does not rip cleanly in both directions. It can be ripped straight up and down in one direction, but cannot be torn precisely in a horizontal line. There were no images in her dreams. No people, no guns, no scary trees or gravestones. There were colors, flowing like rivers and dripping like blood. Dripping from where, she didn?t know. And the colors? she could not identify the colors. When she woke she knew they were colors, but could not have told anyone what colors they were. If the purple and greens of a bruise were eaten and regurgitated by the dull blue of a vein under the skin, and then mixed with the pallid yellow of old grease, the pallet might have shown the shades of her dream. She woke to the sound of tearing paper, the sound of a page being ripped in two. She sat up in her room.?Lois,? she said, and then was quiet again. Her hear... More About: Sound , Paper , Part

You Know What Happens After Dark: Part Two
More articles from this author:2008-02-16 17:18:00 Freddy walked slowly home that night, underneath the starlike lamps along the curb, lost in her own thoughts, many of them just the mundane thoughts any twenty year old girl would have, and many of them skirting around the subject of her only-recently-ex boyfriend and many more of them fluttering past the question of when she would tell Mom that they?d broken up. It hadn?t even been anything big that broke them up. She thought maybe that it was just that she didn?t want to live with anyone. She was almost at her apartment building when she heard the thump-thump-thump of that song again. Lois? song, whatever it was she?d been playing. She looked up and saw the back end of Lois? car, its brake lights shining at her like two sleepy eyes. The front was engulfed in smoke, or steam, something white anyway, that billowed from the crumpled hood and rose up into the tree Lois had driven into. Freddy rushed up, pushing her hood back off of her face.?Lois! Lois!? she screamed. ?Somebody call 911... More About: Dark , Part 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
