Sometimes, when I can't get to sleep at night, I lie awake plotting my next horror story. I can do that because the bugaboos and vampires and creepy old women and shapeshifting demons that populate my stories are entirely made-up.There are real-life terrors, though, that keep me up at night, too. Like fire ants. Do you even know what fire ants can do to you? I do and I shudder to think about it at all. I, who can fall asleep picturing a centuries-old woman ripping off someone's eyeballs, don't want to picture fire ants at all. What I do want to picture is how to kill fire ants, and there's a place that can help with that. A guy has a four day holiday weekend, and day one begins with a lot of football and great food to eat -- turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, snack mix, and three kinds of pie. The sound of paper tearing woke Freddy up. And just in time. Her dreams were not something she would have wanted to continue that night.Newsprint does not rip cleanly in both directions. It can be ripped straight up and down in one direction, but cannot be torn precisely in a horizontal line.There were no images in her dreams. No people, no guns, no scary trees or gravestones.
