Essential Download of the Weekend: SpellBound
2007-07-21 22:25:00
Have you heard of Spell bound before? (Alt Download ) It’s a a spell check plugin for the Firefox web browser. I highly recommend it. A spellcheck feature is actually built into the newest version of firefox - go to your tools menu, select options, and enable “Check my spelling as I type”.

The History of Privacy
2007-07-20 03:28:00
Effective tomorrow, Anonymizer Inc. is discontinuing its web-based private surfing service. Did you see the article a while back by the Electronic Frontier Foundation(EFF), which explains that printer manufacturers have secretly implemented watermarks so you can be traced back to your print outs? Most recently, the new Harry Potter book was leaked via bittorrent. Someone actually took the time to photograph each page of the book. It turns out that person forget that all photographs taken with a digital camera have the camera’s serial number embedded in them by default. The online community was quick to remind the photographer of this fact. And don’t even get me started on the data mining opportunities which present themselves from social networking services like facebook! (Here’s a paper on the topic) Well, I guess its good I’ve done nothing wrong (yet).

SEO for a dual-language site
2007-07-18 17:54:00
Here in Canada we have two official languages: French and English. In the past, this has never affected me, other than the fact that my cereal boxes contain French on one side. As of today, Canada’s two languages are now affecting me significantly. I am currently doing some SEO work for a dual-language website, which has the problem of the search engines basically ignoring the French side of their website. Although I haven’t worked extensively in dual-language SEO, I am excited by this challenge. Has anyone else had experience search engine optimizing a website for two different languages?

Giant Homer seen from Sky
2007-07-17 02:58:00
It looks like the 7-11 to Quik-E-Mart conversion wasn’t enough - Fox has gone out an painted a hundred foot tall drawing of homer in his underware as a publicity stunt for the new Simpsons Movie. Local Pagans were offended by the stunt, as the Homer was drawn beside the Cerne Abbas Giant , a giant image of a man with a club carved into a British hillside a long time ago. As quoted from a BBC article, “Ann Bryn-Evans, joint Wessex district manager for The Pagan Federation, said: “We were hoping for some dry weather but I think I have changed my mind. “We’ll be doing some rain magic to bring the rain and wash it away.” See a picture of the giant homer @ The Daily Mail
A basic guide to SEO and Online Forums
2007-07-15 16:46:00
As previously mentioned, I’m currently working on search engine optimizing a Simple Machines Forum (AKA SMF). I recieved some emails asking for more information about the specific steps one can take to make their forums more search engine accessible. Specifically, their forums have the common of problem of content being thrown into Google’s supplemental index. Here are a few SEO suggestions which may help (in no particular order of importance): - Implement search engine friendly URLs (Instead of forum.com/index.php?thread=23423234%post= 2343, forum.com/title-of-thread). Luckily, you don’t have to implement this manually on SMF: It can be achieved via the use of a .htaccess modification and the SEO4SMF plugins. - Prevent duplicate and non-useful content from being indexed by using a robots.txt file and/or Meta tags (meta name=”robots” content=”noindex, follow”). Common examples of duplicate and non-useful content are printer-friendly version...

Playing with Colour

I’ll be playing with new colour schemes over the next few weeks. Although I would normally reserves testing new designs to a QA-environment, this isn’t a “professional” website: hence you all get to join in helping me choose the best colour scheme.

Marketers are leaving Second Life
2007-07-15 02:05:00
As I have suspected for quite a while, the whole businesses in Second Life thing appears to have been somewhat overexagerated. Although Second Life ’s website claims it has over 8,000,000 members, Forrester Research has found that there are only 30,000 to 40,000 users are logged on at peak times. When compared to other virtual communities (World of Warcraft anyone?), that number is pretty tiny… I actually wrote a very long post on this topic, and it was just deleted by mistake. Quite frustrating - that’s why you don’t talk on the phone and blog at the same time. Long story short, the argument I was going to make is that Second Life is not dying, but rather virtual communities are just maturing, which is a good thing for marketers. Much like in the real world, where different demographics frequent different locations, different people enjoy different virtual communities online. Although I don’t have research to back it up, my gut says Second life user...

Forum and CRM Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
2007-07-09 05:48:00
One of my current projects is optimizing a simple machines forum for search engine spiders. While researching what off-the-shelf SEO plugins are available for the forum package, I came across an interesting executive-summary style article on SEO for CRM, which I highly recommend to anyone interested in getting a basic overview of the most common technical aspects of SEO.

Negative SEO: How to hurt your competitor’s rankings
2007-07-06 01:30:00
While at the Toronto Search Engine Strategies conference a few weeks ago I had the opportunity to attend a discussion about the potential for malicious SEO practices, held by employees of the big 4 (Yahoo / Google / Ask / Microsoft). There was a general consensus between the search engines that although malicious / negative search engine optimization could work in concept, they have never encountered a specific case of it. Furthermore, the representatives were sure to point out that there is always that chance that a negative SEO campaign could have the exact opposite of the desired effect, as building more links to site, even if they come from a “bad area”, could have a positive net effect on rankings. So, what is negative search engine optimization? It’s the process of attempting to lower the search engine rankings of a site which you do not own / are not affiliated with (the assumption is your only able to do off-site actions). Negative SEO is also very hot rig...

You can’t avoid the Taxman
2007-07-03 05:29:00
The South Korean Government has stated they are going to begin taxing the real money made via virtual transactions: In American terms, that means such things as selling gold on World of Warcraft, or buying property at Secondlife. Taxes will be collected at the service provider level - an automatic VAT (Value Added Tax) will be deducted from seller’s monthly revenues. Governments have been taxing the licensing and sale of intellectual property for a very long time; the real surprise here is they didn’t start taxing real money game transactions sooner! [discovered at Slashdot]

Crocodile Eats Dog

Another great example of immersive advertising, from Scholz & Friends, Berlin, Germany for the Neunkircher Zoo: According to numerous articles on this campaign, the agency claimed a ~15% increase in attendance compared to an average month. Love the creativity and uniqueness of this campaign - nevertheless, I can’t help but feel this is one of those situations where the ad agency was more focused on winning agency awards than driving sales for the Zoo.

How to manipulate Wikipedia Entries
2007-06-28 02:38:00
Searchengineland has an interesting article today about different methods one could hypothetically use to manipulate a wikipedia entry. Manipulate may actually be too strong a word, as you can’t really manipulate a wiki for an extended period of time (as another member of the community will undo your edits). Instead, you can make subtle changes to a wiki entry to influence the readers impression of its content. For example, as suggested by searchengineland.com: 1. Add content to the top of the entry, pushing content you don’t want people to read below the fold. 2. Change the organization method (i.e. lettering/numbering) to influence what people focus on. If volume numbers are quoted without sources, erase them with an explanation that they have no reference. 3. Manufacture paragraphs which hide negative content. People rarely read full paragraphs - make sure the first and last sentence of each is positive. 4. Super-extend a post: Internet users are lazy - the length of ...

Myspace is for uneducated people
2007-06-26 00:41:00
… or so says a recent study quoted by the BBC. Berkley PhD student Danah Boyd decided to spend 6 months researching this concept for her thesis. She discovered: “Social networks are strongly connected to geography, race, and religion; these are also huge factors in lifestyle divisions and thus ‘class’…MySpace has most of the kids who are socially ostracised at school because they are geeks, freaks, or queers” Am I the only one who thinks it is pretty logical that a college networking site (which was restricted to only college students for a number of years) is more popular with college grads?

Defective Condoms & Destructive Advertising
2007-06-25 06:31:00
One of “the things that grind me” about the advertising/marketing world is when people get so focused on pushing a message that they forget about the product/purpose. The above anti-AIDS promotion is a great example of this: notice how the ribbon is affixed to the condom wrapper? Yes, that is a staple holding in on. Yes, the staple has gone right thru the package, puncturing the condom inside. Internet marketers commonly make similar oversights: viral mini-sites which don’t allow for actual purchases, or flash-based feature-packed websites which just don’t function on older computers. Although the legal repercussions of these actions may not be a severe as handing out punctured condoms, the root cause is related. Are you trying to promote AIDS awareness, or safe sex? Are you trying to create a cool website, or move product? (For the record, I am not equating safe sex/AIDS awarness and online business optimization as equals here)

The most popular blog on the Internet
2007-06-11 04:25:00
Back in 2000 I started what would later be called a blog (the term hadn’t been fully adopted by the general population yet) dedicated to gadgets and technology called Hippievan.com (Click here to view the website at archive.org). My website actually got quite a bit of traffic, so much so that I was interviewed by the Wall Street Journal as a result of it. After operating the website for about two years I decided to shut it down, as it was consuming quite a bit of free time and wasn’t making me any money. I (stupidly) let the domain names expire, and forgot about the idea of a daily updated news source dedicated to new gadgets and technology. Today, a report was released that says Gizmodo.com is the world’s most popular blog. According to a whois search, Gizmodo.com was created in July of 2002, two years after Hippievan. Ouch. So what can I learn from this experience? 1) Timing is just as important (if not more important) than the idea 2) Implementation is also mo...

Cognitive Lock-in : Why your neighbor loves their mac
2007-06-07 04:50:00
The Journal of Consumer Research recently released a report on the topic of “cognitive lock-in”. In business school, this is more commonly referred to as “switching costs”. The report basically goes out to prove that when someone is familiar with something, they will generally remain liking that thing even if a “better” alternative is available, due to a psychological attachment to the familiar. Hence, when Facebook announces a new display format for their website, hundreds of thousands of its users complain, even if the new format is in fact better than their old one. Similarly, there is the mac/windows/linux argument, which seems to be raging strong as ever, even though the three systems are as similar to each other as they have ever been. The “cognitive lock-in” theory introduces a difficult paradox when entering established markets: if users are more likely to think the products they are familiar with are higher quality, how do yo...

Guangzhou Global Telecom - Stock Spam 2.0?
2007-06-06 03:17:00
In previous articles, I spoke about some research which established that stock spam works, as well as mentioned a report about how stock spam works. A quick reminder: Stock Spam are those image-based emails pumping small chinese firms. Buy Today! This stock is reaching for the stars! Today, I discovered Stock Spam 2.0 over at Kiplinger.com: Meet Guangzhou Global Telecom . Rather than send out millions of emails like other small Chinese firms, Guangzhou Global Telecom took a different approach: Buy media (seemingly indirectly) in some of the most read business publications around the world talking about how great their company is. Ok, now I know this technically isn’t spam, but rather stock pumping (or “marketing”, depending on what you do for a living), but it does awake an interesting point: As society becomes more wary of online scams, will it “give back” authority to traditional media? How would this situation played out twenty years ago, if a comp...
