Canadian Web Hosting
2007-06-03 21:00:00
I’m in need of a new web hosting provider, and being Canadian thought I might examine some local providers first. Unlike in the US, there really aren’t that many large Canadian hosting providers. For whatever reason (population size, availability of cheap American hosting, etc…), there also seem to be very few affordable web hosting firms in Canada. Here’s a list I have researched of Canadian web hosting firms. I didn’t include any hosting providers which don’t provide a physical mailing address, as I interpret that as sign of a hosting re-seller – someone who has rented a server at a hosting company and is reselling space. The hosting companies are organized alphabetically – no recommendations as to quality, service or price are being given by their positioning. Apple DRM-free music = entrapment?
2007-06-03 17:43:00
The BBC reports that Apple is getting in a little hot water with the launch of their new DRM-Free tracks on iTunes. DRM stands for Digital Rights Management, and refers to the technology which prevents you from copying songs bought on iTunes to a large number of your friend’s iPods. Apple recently announced they are removing DRM from songs provided from record label EMI. What Apple forgot to mention in their initial press release was that in place of the digital rights management, they would associate your personal information with each downloaded music file. So its now easier than ever to share your iTunes-purchased music with friends - it’s also much more likely you’ll get caught for doing so. Copyright © 2007 New Mediaist Internet Marketing. Not another article on the Facebook Platform
2007-06-01 02:11:00
As covered in every major tech/business news source over the last week, Facebook recently opened up their user base to external companies via their Facebook platform program. Enter iLike, a music recommendation engine and one of the first Facebook Platform applications. As of May 31st, 7:56 PM, iLike has 981,222 users on Facebook. The Facebook Platform has been live since May 24th. Therefore, Facebook users became iLike members at the rate of ~122,650 / Day. The implications of this are significant to say the least, and I’ll try not to delve into the obvious ones here. What I find interesting about this case is it is further proof of the immense power a small number of companies have over North American Internet Users. It almost seems as though as the Internet grows larger and larger, power is consolidating into the hands of a small number of players: Google has search, Facebook has social networking, eBay auctions, craiglist classifieds, etc… While this shouldn’...

Yahoo is the number one Google search term
2007-05-24 05:00:00
This news may be a little old, but “Yahoo ” overtook “sex” as the number one search term on Googl e last year (source). As an Internet marketer it is easy to get so caught up in “the community” and forget how basic the majority of Internet user’s computer skills are. They see the Google search box as a combination URL entry and search query tool. Just goes to further prove the importance of good search engine optimization. I Ubuntu.
2007-05-21 04:16:00
In honour of Victoria Day I installed Ubuntu on my home computer. Ubuntu is a version of Linux, the “free” computer operating system, and the only real competition to Microsoft Windows XP/Vista on PCs. First impressions? It’s pretty similar to Windows, and should do fine for 85% of computer users. If your not an intermediate to advanced computer user, I wouldn’t recommend attempting to install Ubuntu alone - it is highly unlikely every feature will “just work” upon installation. Similar to Windows, lots of little things (screen resolution, sound, etc…) need tweaking to get working properly. Copyright © 2007 New Mediaist Internet Marketing. Facebook launches Marketplace: Watch out Ebay / Craigslist ?
2007-05-20 00:53:00
Facebook Mark etplace was launched earlier this week. Not currently positioned as a direct competitor to ebay or craigslist, the Facebook Marketplace is specifically designed for the trading of goods within your direct social community. It excites me to see Facebook beginning to expand their service offerings - here’s to hoping they have an IPO sometime soon Copyright © 2007 New Mediaist Internet Marketing. How stock spam works
2007-05-17 04:30:00
In a previous post I referenced a study which concluded stock spam works. But HOW does it work? Found an article over on Slashdot about how those spammy images-based emails find their way to your inbox. (Make sure to play with the neat interactive section of the article!) New Mediaist has been slashdotted!
2007-05-15 03:20:00
Yes, that is the smell of geek in the air - welcome slashdot brethren! I was able to survive the traffic jump even though I’m on a cheap Godaddy hosting account. The reason? Cache! The reason why many websites crash when bombarded by traffic is because most websites aren’t actually “static” - but rather are created on-the-fly from a series of records in a database. In other words, each time you visit the website, you are in fact asking the website to query a database and retrieve some information. Therefore, if too many people visit the website at once, the database receives to many queries, and everything just crashes. The solution to this problem is a caching layer: a system which detects which web pages are being regularly accessed, and creates a copy of the information requested from the database for these web pages, so the database doesn’t have to be called each time a user arrives. For word press, the software which runs this blog, caching layer ...

When the economics of open source don’t work
2007-05-14 04:44:00
Most open source zealots (no offense intended; I use many open source software packages daily, and am currently experimenting with Ubuntu) push their cause with two supporting factors: 1) Open Source software is free of influence from “The Man” (unless his name is Linus, that is) 2) Open Source software can better than closed source software (in some cases) But what about in countries where intellectual property protection doesn’t exist? The fact that open source is legally free wouldn’t make any difference, as its commercial counterparts (I.e. Microsoft Windows/Office/Etc…) are equally free. In fact, the argument can be made that in a world with high bandwidth costs and no intellectual property protection open source is actually more expensive than closed source, as you can buy pirated copies of closed-source software off the street, but need to spend days (weeks?) on an expensive Internet connection to download open source equivalents. When Bill Gate...

Human Computation & the ESP Game.
2007-05-08 03:46:00
Very Cool Presentation over at Google Video on “Human Computation”: As I understand it, human computation is looking at the human’s brain “downtime” (i.e. playing Freecell at work) as “free cycles” which can be utilized for computational tasks too complicated for computers, but easy for humans. Luis von Ahn, the speaker in the Google Video, is an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University. He has developed something he calls the “ESP Game ”, which is a small example of using human computation to develop a better image search website. Very cool stuff. Check Browser Compatibility - Online
2007-05-07 06:18:00
Here is a neat quick tool which allows you to test your web design in different browsers - online. Very handy, as there is nothing which bugs me more than a big professional website which just plain doesn’t work in Firefox or a 6 month old version of Internet Explorer. Immersive Marketing
2007-05-05 15:09:00
I assume some term has already been coined for this type of ad but I am unaware of it, so I’ll just call it immersive advertising: Immersive Advertising: When an advertisement integrates itself with its natural surroundings, making it difficult to determine where the advertisement ends and reality begins.
