Why I Design on a PC Instead of a Mac
2007-10-05 21:14:00 I figure it’s about that time where I write a controversial article about a hot topic. Recently, Macintoshes have been having increased sales, especially amongst students. Not too long ago (less then a year), I was a student in a Graphic Design program. In a program that was naturally flooded with Macintoshes, I used a ... More About: Web Design

Bookmark Yourself and Don?t Feel Guilty About It
2007-10-01 19:50:00 When you start your first blog, who’s going to find it? It’s silly to assume the “if you build it, they will come” ideology. It’s also silly to assume that producing great content is the only way to get an amazing increase in visitors. Your personal network of online friends and real life friends might be ... Why I NoFollow The DoFollow Movement
2007-09-19 19:07:00 Very clever title, I know. The following article will likely be one of my more controversial blog posts. I’m not against negative responses (or positive responses :)) as long as you refrain from personal attacks. So far, I’ve downloaded the DoFollow plugin, and uploaded it to my server. I have not activated it through WordPress’s Admin Panel and I will tell you why. What Is The D oFollow Movement? The DoFollow Movement is a movement where its blogging participants choose to eliminate the rel=”nofollow” from their commenters’ websites. Removing the rel=”nofollow” from your outbound links (<a></a>) allows the link to be counted as a “vote” in Google’s PageRank system. As a result, it’s possible that your commenter’s website will get additional PageRank which may result in higher Search Engine Result Placement (SERP). To my knowledge, most blogging platforms (Blogspot, WordPress, etc.) include thi... More About: Nofollow
Search Engine Optimization for WordPress - Part 3
2007-09-17 18:47:00 In Part 1 of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for WordPress, I discussed content and directory structures. In Part 2 of the series, I discussed how to avoid duplicate content. In this edition, I will be discussing a broad range of topics. How To Link Between Posts The title attribute in your link tag (<a>) is a great place to throw in some keywords that can benefit your destination. When linking to different pages or categories, you should be using a great title attribute as well as great link text. Bad Example: check out my post on car parts by <a href=”http://www.pat-burt.com&rdquo ;>clicking here</a> Good Example: check out my <a href=”http://www.pat-burt.com&rdquo ; title=”car parts blog”>post about car parts</a> The good example uses the title attribute effectively and has great link text. It is EASY to do this. It isn’t hard. When adding a link using WordPress’s WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor, g... More About: Wordpress , Search Engine

Fixed vs Fluid Website Layouts
2007-08-20 19:01:00 This was a topic brought up by several commenters regarding the appropriate width and height for webpages during last week’s installment in the Web Usability Series. Some posters noted that “Designing web sites for fixed width is a pretty dated approach now-days.“, “Fluid will fit regardless of desktop or hand held device resolution.” and “Fluid templates will solve the problem of different screen resolutions.” I will approach this comparison as unbiased as I can, but personally, I do prefer designing websites with fixed layouts. What is a Fluid or Fixed Website Layout? Before we jump into the comparison, I’ll go over what each of them mean really quickly. A Fluid Layout is a website layout that expands (or compresses) with your browser window’s width. A Fixed Layout is a website layout where your website’s size doesn’t change as your browser window’s width increases or decreases. If you’re a more visual ...
