Netscape Closing Down Social News Site?
2007-08-10 17:54:00
I think not. Much of this rumor mill was started on TechCrunch, and has grown to a debate all over the place on Digg, Sphinn, and even back to Netscape . While I’m usually a big fan of what TechCrunch has to say, this time, I have quite a few problems with the article.

Starting a blog: How do you Measure Success?
2007-08-07 20:38:00
I’ve been asked before how you know when your blog is successful. That question means different things to different people. Here are my thoughts on how you can measure the success of your blog: Others appreciate your posts. For me, the fact that someone found my blog and asked to think that means that my blog is successful. Ability to share expertise in life / business experiences. Writing about something that you believe in and sticking with it may be enough for some. But to give that knowledge over to someone else is another level of success. It makes you money. Making money online is a great thing, and making money writing about what you love in a blog can be incredibly satisfying. Unfortunately, the majority of blogs don’t make much money. Pronet does a good job detailing out a study by the University of Texas and Chikita in showing that the top 50,000 blogs generate $500 million (according to 2006 data). Popularity. Blog ging doesn’t usually make you a ...

Starting a Blog: Have a Topic in Mind and Stick With It!
2007-08-06 18:04:00
So you’ve started blogging and have several posts out there. It is good to have a mix in your content, but unless you have a specific topic in mind, it is likely that you won’t be able to hold your audience’s interest. If you have any hope on running a successful blog (we’ll define what success on a blog is later), you must keep posting. The most important thing to keep in mind is to not get discouraged. If you see that you haven’t posted for a while and your stats are going down, don’t obsess about stats - it’s time to post! Aliza Sherman Risdahl, author of The Everything Blog ging Book makes several good points on the topic, including: “Allotting an hour a day to your blog is helpful, but even if you can only spare thirty minutes, you can still make it work.“ I assure you. Everyone gets writer’s block. It happens to all writers at some point, so why not you? Here are a few ideas to get the creative juices flowing:...

Add the next number (1. 2. 3. 4. 5., etc.) and write your own blogging tip for other bloggers. Try to make your tip general. After that, tag up to 10 friends! Here are the tips! 1. Wikipedia vs. Encyclopedia Britannica
2007-07-25 09:52:00

Let’s step back a bit…way before Wikis, and even ...

Trading stuff for free vs. Free stuff

Trading Stuff for Free Swaptree is a great service that I came across recently. It lets you trade books, music, movies, and games with others for free. You tell the system what you have, and it figures out what you can get in exchange. Note that it supports one-for-one item trades only. How it ...

SaaS / Software-as-a-Service
2007-07-06 00:29:00
SaaS / Software -as-a-Service When I buy a plane ticket, I buy a ride, not the whole airplane. This is an economic axiom, and, at business school, I learned this concept as a First Cause. Health Insurance for small businesses: HDHP, HSA and more

Trillian, Competition, and Chat Widgets
2007-06-24 10:43:00
Trillian Updates The folks at Trillian appear to be pretty busy as of late: They won a CNET Webware 100 award. Also, they have released version 3.1.6.0 and have just released build 46. Competition All this is great news for Trillian. Only one problem. They aren’t the only big boy in the multi-protocol instant messaging client space anymore. Products such as Meebo, Imeem, and Pidgin, (formerly known as Gaim) are also very popular these days. Multi-protocol instant messaging is perfect for those that do not have the patience nor the time (not that anyone should bother) to load up MSN, AIM, Yahoo, Miranda and many others and then try to switch between programs and have their buddy lists all over the place. Rolling all your im account into a single platform is great, but doesn’t get rid of the recent invasion of the AIM new bots again as I previously posted. Trillian is hard at work on their new product, Trillian Astra. It is currently in Alpha mode (you c...

shiurimtogo.com - new site for mp3 torah lessons is live!
2007-06-21 04:29:00
Although we launched this site a little while ago now, it was right before the start of this blog and is worthy of mention here. Shiurimtogo.com is a collection of shiurim (Hebrew for Jewish lectures on torah, or Jewish topics) available for download in mp3 format. This is perfect for the commuter that is looking to learn during these otherwise unproductive moments. Some of the shiurim are free, while others are on a pay per download basis with a PayPal back end. Samples are also available. We did an entire administration build for this client, giving them the ability for adding new speakers, new shiurim, and to dynamically adjust information. Our custom design also makes it a pleasure to look through the different shiurim choices. Congratulations, Shiurimtogo!
