Free Market Morality (Great Video Lecture/Documentary)
2008-01-23 16:37:00 We understand consumerism. Our powerful market-driven economy is based on an assessment of the worth of our treasure, time, and talent. But we place value on more than material items: we also make value judgments on ethical choices regarding life decisions from marijuana use to abortions. What makes the things in our lives so valuable, and what can be sacrificed for a greater good? http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=- 3520017904048168988 Philosophers such as Jean-Paul Sartre and economists like Adam Smith have advanced several important theses on the nature of valuation, though always restricted to their chosen field. This paper will offer groundbreaking insights into a new environment of ethical supply and demand and create a new theory of free-market morality. It examines critical issues, such as whether actions have a priori worth, the plausibility and necessity of arbitrary value judgments, and an economic-existentialist method that most humans apply without realization... Slide.com valued at $500+ million
2008-01-22 00:42:00 "Three months ago Slide founder Max Levchin assured us that, despite rumors, he wasn't raising money, and hadn't even updated his pitch deck. He sure got his act in gear in a hurry, it seems. Today Business Week and The NY Times are reporting that Slide has raised $50 million at a valuation north of half a billion. Three months ago when he officially wasn't pitching a new round, the rumors were that he was looking for at least a $200 million valuation. It sounds like he got the bidding war he was looking for. This was their fourth round of funding." http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/01/18/slid e-gets-their-huge-valuation-and-raises-50 -million/ More About: Million
How to Engage Marketing-Weary Consumers with the Power of Community, Dialog
2008-01-06 14:49:00 Throughout the history of advertising and marketing, communicating with consumers has been a one-way street. Marketers produced and disseminated messages and customers consumed them whether they liked them or not. Today, every person sees thousands of advertisements a day?and totally ignores the vast majority of them. Yet, companies still spend billions of dollars each year yelling at customers who don't want to hear it. I've just read this fantastic book, Join the Conversation - it questions and answers how marketers can adapt to the brave new world of the Internet, social media and networking, consumer-generated content, blogs, and podcasts by joining the rich, deep, and meaningful customer conversations already in progress. Consumers today are active participants in the advertising process, not silent targets and sitting ducks for one-way communication. Forget about the medium being the message; today, consumers are both the medium and the message. The futur... More About: Marketing , Power , Community , Dialog
Get Web 1.0 Right First
2008-01-06 14:45:00 Jakob Nielsen's newest alertbox on the web 2.0's dangers to site profitability... "Instead of adding Facebook-like features that let users "bite" other users and turn them into zombies, B2B websites would get more sales by offering clear prices, good product photos, detailed specs, convincing whitepapers, an easily navigable information architecture, and an email newsletter."Couldn't agree more :)Source: Advertising Lab

Great viral video - Make a joke of yourself and improve your product sales
2007-12-16 06:33:00 Thanks Servant Of ChaosThis piece of research (that beautifully rolls up into a great viral piece) by the makers of Drambuie, is a great introduction on how paying yourself out and using negative customer feedback can improve your sales.I think Guy Kawasaki's advice on the value of polarising your customer base comes true in this piece.Ive never tried Drambuie, but given this bunch of yokels hate it, it makes me want to go and try it :) More About: Video , Joke , Sales , Product , Viral

Why "Hit Culture" is dying
2007-12-13 00:55:00 I turned on the radio for the first time in a long time this morning ... i found their marketing slogans rather curious."Sydney #1 Hit Music Station" - Hit Music? What happened to the Best music, or the Newest music, or your favorite golden greats music. If i was running a radio station, i would probably look to have a different slogan than "Today's Hit Music"What is Hit Music anyways? Who decides what a "hit" is? I'm pretty sure its not the consumers of the hit music, i'm pretty sure its a bunch of fat old cocaine using, yacht sailing music execs... I'm also damn sure at best its not a democratic processI think increasingly today and tomorrows consumers like to see themselves as cultural entrepreneurs, people who find cool new songs, artists, video clips, blogs, website etc - and try to be the first to share it with their friends.Hit Culture is fighting uphill against this trend, Hit culture is trying to tell you than because everyone else is listening to it that its the best fo... COLOSSAL MP3 Player stays true to its name
2007-12-10 13:30:00 It's quite likely that the COLOSSAL MP3 Player has somehow managed to stay largely hidden from view for some time now, but it is apparently popping up in a number of locations and begging to be purchased as the ultimate tech gag gift.Apparently, these things come in a number of hues, check in at about five to ten times larger than your prototypical MP3 Plaster and include a USB cable, earphones and 256MB of built-in memory. The humongous units get their juice from four AA cells (which supposedly last around eight hours) and can be found at random drug stores (and probably elsewhere) for under $20. Needless to say, this is the stocking stuffer buster you've been looking for. Thanks Engadget! :) More About: True , Stays , Colossal
Why marketing and sales can be measured againt police shooting accuracy
2007-12-10 13:23:00 Why Marketing and sales can be measured againt police shooting accuracy... Thanks sethIn a new study released in today's Times, it turns out that the typical NY police officer only hits 34% of the time she fires a gun. Even from a distance of six feet or less, it's 43%. Obviously, Bruce Willis is the exception. I wonder how it changes your decision making when you discover that you're only going to be successful one out of three times. Never mind blasting a weapon out of an assailant's hand, we're talking about hitting the target at all... How does a cop have the guts to even pull a weapon knowing that most of the time, it's not going to have its desired effect (my guess is that the threat and the noise and chaos is as positive an outcome as an actual hit...). I know I would never have the guts to do that job. Sales people have a harder time with this than marketers. Marketers have lots of 'bullets' and they don't notice the ones they miss (I us... Why monopolies are threatened by web 2.0 and pr 2.0
2007-12-10 12:58:00 Seven years ago, Seth Godin wrote an article about media, copyright, monopolies and the future. I'm fascinated by the stuff he got right even back then... monoplies are fading in influence faster and faster - due to the rise of the bottom up, conversation oriented, free, open cry marketplace that online human communication has become in the marketplace of 2.0Source: Seths Blog

Web Metrics: So much data, so little information
2007-12-02 14:13:00 Imagine you are an advertiser, you want to place your banners on the most popular website, and you want to know how much to pay. Globally, the leading site is Google, which has the most "page views". Or is it Microsoft, whose various sites have, in the jargon, the most "time spent"? Or should you go by unique users, duration, hits, click-through, impressions, queries, sessions, streams, or engagement? Whether or not there is truth in advertising, there is certainly none for online advertisers, at least none that is immediately obvious and simple. The web produces data as "a fire-hose shoots water", and that working out what those data mean is rather like "putting a straw into the fire hose to take a sip". Get the angle even slightly wrong, and you are blown away. Read the full article at the Economist More About: Information , Data , Metrics

Thats ok, Just Tell an Honest , genuine Story.Balanced dietIf you practice what I call a brand-balanced diet, the following criteria will sound familiar: Your brand story is consistent and can be measured against consumer-resonant benefits. Your brand teaches rather than preaches. You enable your consumers to have choices and are sympathetic to "studied cheating." You invite your consumers to be part of your brand through ongoing dialog.http://adage.com/cmostrategy/artic le.php?article_id=120028 More About: Strategy , Rate , Bottom

Facebook and the Art of Segmentation
2007-08-23 21:21:00 Some people seem to miss the value in Facebook 's 35 million users.Maybe because the advertising rates are low and the click-through rates abominable. The real value in Facebook's audience comes from data mining and the ability to watch, track and cluster what attractive demographics are doing in the aggregate. In other words, Facebook may be selling us more than it is selling advertising.....Interesting...http://www. copyblogger.com/facebook-application-mark eting/ More About: The Art , Segmentation
