My New Simple Human Dish Rack & The AdHack DIY (Do it Yourself) Advertising
2008-03-19 00:00:00 2 weeks ago, I stumble upon the most amazing dish rack I have ever seen, made by a company called Simple Human . I did not expect to see this in a Costco for some reason, which basically added to my surprise. Sonia was exasperated to see how crazy I was becoming over this dish rack, but not so much my friend James, Chief Punk of AdHack, a DIY (Do It Yourslef) Avertising Community who immediately suggested that I should do an AdHack about it. Just in case you were wondering, an AdHack, like the name suggests, is basically an ad that I would do myself and that could potentially be commissioned to the company who popularized the product or service. Like most of you would think, what could be so special about a dish rack. More than you think. Stay put, you?ll see, it gets even better when I unfold the story. So last week, considering I did not know exactly where to start creating an AdHack for my brand new dish rack, which only cost $45 by the way, I sat down with James to go over the ... Masters of Digital Media Program PPC Management Team
2008-03-16 00:00:00 In the last 2 hour session of a 10 hours intensive coaching program on PPC (Pay Per Click) Management to the students at Masters of Digital Media last month, we fooled around with Megan?s camera and experimented a little with the lights of the projector on a typical Google Adwords MCC (My Client Center) in the background. In this picture, we can recognize (in typical order) Sonu Sharma, Megan Cole, Nadia Aly and myself, which constitutes the PPC & SEO Workforce. We had a lot of fun taking these shots and this is what we ended up with: Sonu Sharma, Megan Cole, Nadia Aly and myself: MDM PPC & SEO Workforce Team Alex explaining PPC (Pay Per Click) Management 101 Here is the full set of pictures from that same PPC Coaching session. Ecogle.fr All Black Search Engine a Greener Solution than Google?
2008-03-16 00:00:00 I am not sure what to think about this, if this is true or not, and I would really like to have your comments. I just got an email from Quebec about a new search engine (sic), ecogle.fr, a supposedly greener approach to our beloved Google . They claim that white pixels take way more energy than black pixels and as such we should turn to their solution instead. We would still get Google search results but with a different (black) user interface essentially. As such, this is what it would look like: Please try it and let me know what you think. I am not convinced that I would like to search in the dark. I think the claim of saving energy would better suit traditional media people because of the insane amount of junk mail we receive and as such, we should leave Google alone for the time being, but that is just me. Here is the original email, en Français: Comme vous le savez, l?état de notre planète est de pire en pire. Effet de serre, pollution des océans, etc. Nous nous de... What is SEMPO? An Explanation by Massimo Burgio from SEMPO Global
2008-03-08 00:00:00 As a lot you know, dear fellow readers of the eMarketing 101 blog, for the last year or so I have been actively involved in the promotion of search marketing in Canada through the creation of SEMPO Canada: Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization in Canada. As I prepare the material for our attendance to the Massive Tech Show in Vancouver (BC) on April 01, 2008, which I invite you all to come, I was thinking it would be appropriate to share what SEMPO is and what we are doing to promote search in many countries, including our own. As such, I came across yesterday a good introduction and explanation of SEMPO made by Massimo Burgio, Chair of SEMPO Global , which SEMPO Canada is part of. He explains the advantages of becoming a member and how the organization evolved form the last 5 years. Quite interesting. Here it is:

Radié de l?Ordre des Médecins pour Spamindexing
2008-03-02 00:00:00 English translation will follow. The Montreal Search Marketing agency Skooiz reports on its blog a very interesting story. A French doctor, Philippe Chout, has just been banned from his Doctor accreditation association because he was using his competitors search terms in the Meta tags (meta description & meta keywords tags). He was accused of directing clients to his website that were not...

Why are you Advertising Offline to Drive People Online? The Tofino Example
2008-02-27 00:00:00 A while ago, I was on a trip to Tofino and I took the time to scan all the travel related material on the ferry. While I was there, one in particular caught my attention. Here is what I found: GoTofino makes it clear that the purpose of the brochure is to drive people to their website as they identify themselves as the online guide to Tofino. Since I am assuming it costs a significant amount of money to advertise on BC Ferries, I am wondering if they are in fact getting the traffic they are hoping for. A little check later, you would be interested to know that GoTofino has very little traffic on their site, compare here with eMarketing 101: A little more research and we realize that they are not doing any paid search for their targeted search terms. Here is an example for tofino accommodations. For years, I have noticed advertisers who want to get traffic online by advertising offline. Throughout those years, I have never been able to prove the positive relationship be... More About: People , Advertising , Offline , Drive , Online

Happy Birthday to Boris Mann From Boris Mann Consulting
2008-02-27 00:00:00 Boris Mann Boris is a great man. Last weekend, while he was part of the stellar organizing committee of Northern Voice Conference 2008 on Personal Blogging, he celebrated his birthday. Of course we sang happy birthday, although I must admit, all these personal bloggers gathered for the occasion are better in blogging than singing. Nevertheless, we all appreciated the intense presence of Boris during the conference. He is so generous of his knowledge of everything that happens online. A quick get together with him and you will see that his passion is contagious. You will want to do more online just because he said so. I had the pleasure you celebrate my last birthday with him. Boris was kind enough to give me the best gift an SEO guy can ask for: a Link. Of course I would do the same for you bud. You know how much I like you. So for those who are wondering what Boris does, please take a look at Boris Mann Consulting Services: Vancouver Internet Marketing Expert, Social Media B... More About: Happy , Birthday , Boris

Compete.com Web Analytics Tool Limitations for Canadian Websites
2008-02-08 00:00:00 Compete.com is a new Web Analytics tool that I really like which allows you to measure your competitors traffic. Until recently though, I was not aware of its limitations for Canadian websites. I think you will be as disappointed as I am to learn that compete.com is not capable of evaluating site?s traffic for multi-level domains, such as .bc.ca or qc.ca, which we are all familiar with in Canada. I have also been informed from a Company rep that the tool only tracks traffic from U.S. internet browser population, which is also a major drawback. Therefore, if you try to assess a Canadian site?s traffic with most of the traffic naturally coming Canada, the results might be distorted. Apparently, they are aware of the issue of reporting on multi-level domains and they are working towards a solution. I am hoping they will include Canadian users population in the next version as well. Don?t you worry, I will keep you in the loop as soon as I hear more about it. Here is an internat... Six Simple Tricks to Boost your Google Adwords Click Through Rate
2008-01-25 00:00:00 James from Work Industries sent me this article today from OneDegree.ca on six simple tricks to boost your Google Adwords Click Through Rate (CTR). This is a must-read if you are doing a lot of Pay Per Click (PPC) with Adwords. 6 Simple Tricks to Boost your Google Adwords CTR (Click Through Rate): 1. Use title case: Simply switching from proper case ?like this sentence? to title case, ?Like This Sentence,? regularly improves click-through rates. 2. Add quotes: ?Quotes boost clicks,? particularly when you use them in headlines. 3. Tell a secret: Unfair advantages compel attention. Promise inside information or simply use the word ?secret? in relation to your product?it?s your secret weapon. 4. Use numbers: Figures such as in ?100% guaranteed,? ?100 times better? and ?1-click solution? draw added attention. 5. Insert symbols: Visual variation draws the eye. Use acceptable symbols?such as (tm)?to stand out. 6. End on ellipses: Research shows that ending on ellipses??...??en...

Yahoo Canada Big Idea Chair - Interview With Gord Hotchkiss on Search
2008-01-24 00:00:00 I was looking for a research from enquiro minutes ago and instead I found this great video interview with Gord Hotchkiss on Search Marketing. I think you should check out if you ever want to become a leader in the online space. This interview was made by Yahoo Canada . What attracted my attention is when he was asked about how the mainstream media marketers are responding to search, Gord does not hesitate to mention that most people are really scared. He is using the term *crapless* and I am still trying to figure out exactly what it means but I am guessing it is not flattering. In his usual style, he does not make any favor to Canadians when on the text version of the interview, he goes on by saying that ?when you get to C-Level in Canada, it is like somebody has poured maple syrup on everyone? Everything slows down?. Canada has a culture of caution, which does not work well in search. The video is only 3 minutes long and he brings you straight to the point. Here is the tex...
