Click Fraud
2007-10-11 00:00:00
Click Fraud is no different than stealing money from a competitor. This is how it works: people maliciously click on ads to purposely eat away at a competitor's ad budget; even on a small scale this can be damaging to a competitor. The most aggressive click fraud is when a network of computers with specially created software is used to maliciously click on a competitor's pay per click advertisements in order to waste their money and destroy their advertising campaign.

Google Insulation
2007-10-11 00:00:00
"Google insulation" is the idea of padding the web with friendly-sounding content about a client and then pushing that content to the top of Google results so that negative information is harder to find. This refers to reputation management.

Tattling
2007-10-11 00:00:00
Is XYZ (the competitor) doing well because they purchased links? If so, and it is something you can prove, then it is entirely within your right to tell Google using their sp@m report form. But will this work? It is touch and go whether your complaint will actually do anything in the short term because Google often collects these complaints and then upgrades its algorithm (if possible) to clean out other offenders using the same techniques; a more efficient process. That said, as Matt Cutts said in this video about link buying Google is not above occasionally using manual methods to clean out sp@m so you might get lucky and see an immediate result. This process is called tattling.
Google Bowling
2007-10-11 00:00:00
"Google Bowl ing " is a term applied to a possible way to damage a competitors website. It is based on the theory that Google and possibly other search engines will penalize a website that has gained back links too quickly. By this theory, if you find a way to point a large number of low quality links to a competitors site, Google will consider the site as trying to spam the search engine and will lower the sites position in the SERPS. Google has stated that there is no way for a person to affect the rating of a competitors website. One possible way for Google to hold good on this claim is to devalue the links considered spam but not penalize the website. The possibility of "Google Bowling" has raise a considerable amount of criticism on Goggle's stand on spam resulting from buying or trading back links, especially site wide links that will give large numbers of links at one time.

Search Marketing Dominates Online Marketing Reach
2007-10-10 00:00:00
I just got another search marketing study today. This one was coming from SEMPO Institute which presents Piper Jaffray?s latest search study. It shows how search is the second most commonly used application on the Web with 550 million searches daily in the United States. They have identified key trends in the search industry which you might be interested in: Search is the new portal Search is becoming a branding tool Google?s dominance is increasing Local search remains a looming opportunity New search technologies are likely to expand the field As far as this study suggests, search reach surpasses any other form of web applications as presented in the graph below: On the other hand, people spend very little time on search pages, which explains why time spent is so low. The fastest you find what you are looking for, the fastest you leave a common SERP (Search Engine Results Page). If you think about it, this means 2 things. Online users are getting more savvy at searching...

Search Engine Result Pages: Are you in the the Golden Triangle?
2007-10-10 00:00:00
One of the fascinating concepts in search marketing is how quickly online users scan a typical Search Engine Results Page (SERP def.). A few years go, British Columbia Search Marketing Company Enquiro made an eye-tracking research to show how people behave with a search results page. The study watched eye movements of fifty users on the Google search engine result pages. It revealed a ?Golden Triangle? that confirms nothing beats organic search results?sponsored sites that appear above results do very well though. Enquiro called it the ?Golden Triangle? and here you can find examples of their eye-tracking studies. If you are not familiar with the Golden Triangle and how online users are using search results and where they look for listings, I strongly suggest you to take a look at this graphic which shows in vibrant colors where eyes are going in a search results page: Now, take a look at which positions you hold in search results and if you are not in the prime spot as sho...

Workspace: Finding the Value of a Viral Communication Strategy after Stolen
2007-10-07 00:00:00
Workspace is a really cool shared space / co-working environment in Vancouver?s Gastown. 2 weeks ago, Workspace had their first year anniversary party. Unfortunately, thieves broke into Workspace before the party and stole the iMac front-desk computer and laptops. Bill MacEwen, the owner of Workspace, was able to retrieve a photo of one of the suspected thieves after one of them uploaded a picture of himself accidentally. After the incident, the Vancouver blogging community decided to help on the rescue effort to find the thief but more importantly Workspace?s computers. This is the guy who purchased one of the stolen computers and uploaded his picture accidentally. We all thought he was the thief but apparently not. Poor guy, he has his face all over the Internet by now. As a result of all this blogging activity, hundreds of accrued incoming links fuelled the blogosphere. According to Bill MacEwen and Technorati, prior to the incident, Workspace had between 100 and 200 incom...

Google: A Cultural Icon Across Generations
2007-09-29 00:00:00
My friend James from Up In Ontario wrote a story today on Googl e ?s influence on how we seek and connect with information, across generations. He talks about how his grand-parents perceive our intense daily use of Google. Very touching. You should read it. The Onion also talks about the same topic where they report the launch of ?The Google?, the same great Google search engine results with a different interface to appeal to older adults. Hilarious in a typical Onion?s style.

Advertising Agency Websites: Digital Masturbation
2007-09-29 00:00:00
A friend of mine sent me this great article today by David Meerman Scott from Web Ink Now on why you should avoid working with Advertising Agencies to develop your site. The article presents a few reasons why Ad Agencies are so bad at it. It also provides examples. Here they are: Reason #1: Ad Agencies focus on aesthetics over information. Reason #2: Ad Agencies focus on the wrong part of the sales cycle. I know I talked about this a few times lately, but please allow me to add a few of my own: Reason #3: Ad Agencies can?t communicate (they don?t listen). Reason #4: Ad Agencies don?t realize they are being caught lying. Reason #5: Ad Agencies don?t care about online users. Reason #6: Ad Agencies treat you like a consumer rather then a person I believe that in order to communicate properly, you have to be a good listener. Listening is the basis of all good communication and at this, I think most Advertising Agencies fail dramatically. A few months ago I wrote this ...

Nurun / Ant Interactive Decides to Leave SEMPO Canada
2007-09-25 00:00:00
It is with a lot of regret that SEMPO Canada announced last week that Nurun / Ant Interact ive decided not to renew their SEMPO membership and therefore withdraw from all SEMPO-related activities involving the growth of Search Marketing in Canada. They simply stated that they were not getting enough of this relationship and this position was shared by every member of the Nurun / Ant Interactive team. In an industry that is in development, especially in Canada, I would like to take a moment to ask for your feedback on the nature of these relationships between SEMPO but especially the underlying expectations that business people may have in regards to SEMPO, SEMPO Canada and the Canadian Search Marketing Industry in general. It is becoming a common understanding that the Canadian business community expects more out of this industry than they contribute to its growth. We are facing a scarcity of Search Marketing talent in Canada since very few schools, colleges or universities have a ...

The Search Marketing Job Market in Canada: Scarcity of Talent in the Horizo
2007-09-23 00:00:00
I want to talk about the Search Engine Market ing job Market in Canada because I feel I need to clarify a few things. I have seen too many companies lately who are looking to hire a Junior Search Marketing Specialist with 2 years of experience (or so) or freshly out of school and expect to pay them $25-35k a year. If you are one of those, I have some news for you: that person does not exist. Why? Because there are simply no school that teaches Search Marketing. Demand for serious Search Marketing Specialists at all levels keeps increasing and there is a scarcity of talent in this field, which does not yet regenerate itself. In desperation, and after they have been searching for months to fill positions, business owners are calling me and ask if I know anyone. They are telling me that their job posting on Craigslist is not generating anything. Strange isn?t it? The gap between offer and demand keeps growing and the situation is alarming. Therefore, I think there are misconceptions ...

The Dizzy Racers Debut Album
2007-09-23 00:00:00
This post has nothing to do with search marketing but I will soon come back to my regular programming on eMarketing 101 material. My good friend YB - pronounced why be - (which actually stands for Yvan Binette) has been playing guitar and bass for more than 25 years. He has been singing in countless bands since we were kids, making his own materials throughout these years and performing in literally every town in La Belle Province. Every time he mentions he?s got a new band, I always hope it will go through. Now, I have to tell you, his latest band, The D izzy Racer s is going to rock the place. You can listen to a few songs on the site and watch the Nitro video which is extremely well done. The video was made as part of the promotion of the title song for the soundtrack of the movie Nitro which was released a few months ago in Québec. Last summer, the band got invited to open up for the festivities of the Grand Prix de Montreal on the main stage on Crescent Street. Listen to...

Web Page Title Tags for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) & Web Usability
2007-09-13 00:00:00
Marketing Tip: People read from left to right! This may sound obvious but when it comes to writing strong Page Title Tags, which appear prominently in SERPS (Search Engine Result pages), most people are clueless. Since Page Title Tags are considered the most important piece of text on any given page, you should pay attention on how you are doing it. Web Page Title Tags for Search Engine Optimization & Web Usability Page Title tags definition: in HTML code, the title tag specifies the title of your Web page.
