Over The River And Through The Woods, To Grandmother’s House We…Text?
2007-11-26 20:01:00 The transportation-centric Thanksgiving weekend—coupled with horrendous Los Angeles-area traffic that actually seemed worse the weekend before—got me thinking about Ford Motor’s new technology for in-auto texting. In case you missed it, certain 2008 models of Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln cars have started shipping with Microsoft-made technology called Sync. Not only does Sync allow such voice commands ... 2007-11-21 19:34:00 In the first part of this post we discussed the need for SEO, SEM and online marketing. The most important thing you need to do is start now, not in a few days, not tomorrow, but today. The reason for this is simple; it can take months to see any results from your optimizations. Lies, Damn Lies and Open Rates - Part 3
2007-11-19 18:54:00 In the previous entries of this series we’ve discussed why it’s not simply enough to use open rates as the de-facto measure of an email campaign’s success/failure. We also showed you how on a macro level to help your open rates via systematic processes. In the final part, we will talk about the ... More About: Open , Part , Part 3 , Damn , Rates
A Case for Double Opt-In
2007-11-16 19:41:00 When I got my first job in email almost 8 years ago, my boss had me write an article entitled: “A Case Against Double Opt-in”, which essentially described why double (or confirmed) opt-in was bad and why single opt-in was good. At the time, I was new to email and was working for a ...
Google’s Android Could Spark Mobile Marketing 3.0
2007-11-15 19:22:00 Fancy handsets have had jaws wagging about the mobile marketing possibilities for the past year. Apple’s iPhone, which first debuted at Macworld last January, has been the flashiest of the contenders by using the company’s unrivaled marketing muscle combined with a rabid fan base. Meanwhile LG’s Voyager handset, unveiled last month, offers similar multi-media and Internet features as the iPhone—but is more accessible to the masses. Perhaps the biggest breakthrough in mobile communications, however, came last week with Google’s public debut of Android , an open platform that encourages outside developers to create rich features for smart phones. If Android succeeds, it will offer handsets with incredibly rich media capabilities—with which marketers could reach consumers more effectively than ever. Eric Schmidt, chairman and CEO of Google, promised that Android would open “a whole new mobile experience for users with applications and abilities we cannot do today.” M... SEO, SEM and Online Marketing (Part 1)
2007-11-14 19:27:00 The world continues (at an astonishing rate) to become more connected. Every year more and more people move their spending online. These are very exciting times if you sell goods or services. Before the Internet if you owned a clothing store, how would you drive traffic to your store? Local newspaper ads, maybe some radio or television and possibly that dude on the corner with the funny arrow going up and down? How many people could fit in your store, 50, 60? The Internet not only gives you more ways to drive traffic than ever before, but gives your store an unlimited capacity. In the eighties before the Web, you still had a lot of work to do to get people in your store; this hasn’t changed. The arrow guy might have gone away but the hard work is still necessary, although now it’s about learning a whole new skill set. (more…) More About: Marketing , Online Marketing , Online , Part

All The Kids Are Doing It (Part 5)
2007-11-08 20:34:00 Don’t let the proliferation of middle-aged folk on MySpace fool you. Evolutionary leaps in digital communications for the most part tend to be driven by the youth market, at least in the United States. A new report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 88 percent of all teens say that tech devices make their lives easier, compared with 69 percent of their parents. A joint global study by MTV, Nickelodeon, and Microsoft meanwhile noted the differences between youth and adult usage of technology as well—for example, teens use technology to communicate with existing friends, while “perception amongst young people is that it’s their parents who are more likely to use digital networks for online dating or meeting strangers!” Such research illustrates the importance of using digital marketing with coveted tween, teen, and young adult demographic. But it’s far from child’s play. This series, “All The Kids Are Doing It,” tells marketers what ... More About: The Kids , Part
How Web-based Retailers Can Use Email and SMS
2007-11-07 20:13:00 We think of email as this great stand alone channel because of how much you can do with it. From its appearance to its tracking capabilities, some businesses live and die by it. Like email, SMS is starting to become a standard form of communication, and with its rising popularity, there is a lot of debate whether or not it can be used as a primary marketing channel. Certainly, they are two very different channels. For instance, you only have 160 characters to say what you want with SMS. On top of that, there is no color or pictures and it offers few tracking capabilities. Plus, when you are driving someone to a mobile Web page, both the screen size and the keypad used by your consumers tend to be very small. This is hardly a perfect environment for shoppers. Email on the other hand is a great channel to sell goods/services and/or drive traffic back to your site. Does this make email a better channel than SMS? Or better put, does this mean that SMS is a channel that cannot stand alo... More About: Retailers , Retailer
Lies, Damn Lies and Open Rates - Part 2
2007-11-06 20:01:00 In the previous entry, we covered the basic fallacies of using open rate as a primary method to judge the success/failure of an email campaign. As noted, a single method simply isn’t sufficient given the complexities of email marketing today. So, with that in mind, let’s now talk about how it should work. External Mailbox Monitoring Any good true statistical analysis begins with a control measurement. In the case of email, this is the seed email address. Seed addresses give you the ability to better gauge the overall success/failure of your delivery by checking across a variety of major ISP domains like aol.com, hotmail.com and yahoo.com. Companies like ReturnPath offer their own seed test list, which is constantly being update to ensure that your delivery tests are as accurate as possible. In addition, email service providers, like us at mobileStorm, can do these seed address tests for you, both isolated to just a test campaign as well as placing the addresses scattered th... SMTP vs SMPP
2007-11-01 18:20:00 While the title of this may look like a techie article, if you are a marketer sending SMS messages it is important to understand the two methods used to drive this technology, SMPP and SMTP. Both SMTP and SMPP are protocols for sending messages. SMTP stands for “Simple Mail Transfer Protocol” and was first published in August of 1982 as the primary means to send email messages (which is still used today). SMPP stands for “Short Message Peer-to-Peer Protocol” and is the telecommunications industry protocol for exchanging SMS messages. A few years ago, cell phone carriers decided to give every customer their own email address such as 10digitnumber@mobile.mycinugular.com to help convince their subscribers to stick with their service. Marketers caught on to this as a cheap way of sending someone an “SMS” message. I’m using quotes here because it is really more of an email that can be sent to a cell phone. Sending a text message via the SMPP protocol is a true way to sen...
Print Outlets Getting The (Digital) Message
2007-10-31 19:42:00 I’ve spent 14 of the past 16 years working for the print media industry. So I can tell you that for the most part, newspaper companies and publishers tended to have conservative views as to how to best reach dwindling audiences. To put it more bluntly, they just didn’t get it. Not every publisher or news corporation knew how to evolve in order to meet the changing ways in which would-be readers preferred to get information—resulting in shrinking readership and ad revenues. Such problems, happily, may become less critical as increasingly more publications start churning out digital versions of themselves. “Going digital” may not be new in publishing, but recent reports indicate that it’s finally becoming mainstream in the industry. And email or SMS subscriptions to receive news or features articles may become de rigeur as well. First, eMarketer last week reported that according to the research firm Veronis Suhler Stevenson, magazine and newspaper publishers will increase ... More About: Print , Message , Digital , Mess

Lies, Damn Lies and Open Rates – Part 1
2007-10-29 19:09:00 Every major marketing channel has statistics that used to judge (rightly or wrongly) the success of a particular campaign. In some cases, like more traditional marketing channels such as television, print or radio, measuring the success of a campaign can be a real guessing game. Unless you have an immediate call to action, such as a number to contact, coupon or the like, the overall effectiveness of those types of campaigns can be hard to determine. The rise of online marketing has led to much more granular analysis of campaigns since the technology allows itself to be easily tracked and quantified. This is especially true when it comes to email marketing. However, all of the data that can be obtained from email campaigns doesn’t necessarily mean it’s valuable or even accurate. Nowhere is this more the case that with the old saw horse of the email marketer – the open rate. (more…) More About: Open , Part , Damn , Rates , Lies
All The Kids Are Doing It (Part 4)
2007-10-25 20:27:00 While it’s true that many adults use text messaging and hang out on MySpace, evolutionary leaps in digital communications for the most part tend to be driven by the youth market. That could be due in part to the peer-influence factor: A global joint study by MTV, Nickelodeon, and Microsoft said that 55 percent of viral video content they downloaded, and 88 percent of website links they viewed, came from friends’ recommendations. Such research illustrates the importance of using digital marketing with this coveted demographic. But it’s far from child’s play. This series, “All The Kids Are Doing It,” tells marketers what to keep in mind if they want to reach young consumers digitally and effectively. In preceding installments, we talked about mobile marketing, email campaigns, and social networks (the latter two also addressed online privacy regulations related to minors). Today we’ll talk about the latest in Internet technology, from multimedia content like podcasts... More About: The Kids , Part
