Google Blog Search Overtakes Technorati
2006-12-31 01:09:01 Hitwise have reported that Google Blog Search surpassed Tech no rati for the first time last week in terms of traffic levels. The graphs below shows the market share of US Internet visits, with the large spike in traffic during October coinciding with the addition of the Google Blog Search link on the Google News homepage.I'm not really too surprised by these results, especially as in recent weeks I have received far more hits from Google Blog Search than I have from Technorati. Although there doesn't seem to be any current plans I would expect Google Blog Search to replace Blogger Search (currently in 3rd place) at some point during 2007 which would also have a major effect on traffic.

99 Cheap Branding Tips
2006-12-31 01:09:01 Avida Directory yesterday posted an excellent article titled Little Known Ways to Brand on the Cheap : 99 Tips for Poor Web Startups. This lists some great methods to raise the profile of a website cheaply, I particularly liked point 26 about controlling the top 10 search results by creating social media e-profiles as this is something I've been working on doing myself recently with my LinkedIn profile currently ranking 7th for 'Kevin Gibbons' searches."26. E-profiles: manage your reputation. If a potential customer types in your name into a search engine, what sort of results will they see in the top 10? It?s key for you to secure the top 10 results in Google, Yahoo and MSN for searches relating directly and indirectly (if possible) to your brand. You need to be the one defining what people see when they search for you, not your competition. Start by building e-profiles on authority domains such as MySpace, Squidoo, AboutUs, WordPress, Blogger/ Blogspot, MSN Spaces, TypePad, Newsv... More About: Branding

PPC management
2006-12-31 01:09:01 I have updated the website to include PPC management services in addition to SEO.I will be hoping to send traffic to the website from Google AdWords PPC management and also from the search engines. The search terms I am trying to optimise for are all competitive, high traffic keywords which I am confident in being able to achieve high rankings for. Examples of the keywords are; PPC advertising, PPC News, PPC bid management, PPC real estate, PPC keyword research, PPC search engine Internet marketing, Google AdWords promotional code and PPC affiliate programs. Search Engine Optimisation vs Search Engine Optimization
2006-12-31 01:09:01 While redesigning my website I wondered which was the more popular search query, 'search engine optimisation' or 'search engine optimization'. Using the 'z' is the American spelling which I assumed would be more popular but then the 's' is used in the UK and Australia.By looking at the Google Trends results for Search Engine Optimization vs Search Engine Optimisation you can see that the US spelling is the more popular search. But by looking a bit deeper into the regions of these searches you'll find the majority of optimization's are from India. As India is not a country I generally target for potential clients I would say search engine optimisation is the best term as this targets the UK, Australia and Ireland.Neither term, however, is as popular as SEO (SEO vs Search Engine Optimization) which is why I've optimised my homepage's content for SEO consultant, using search engine optimisation as a secondary term as I also hope to receive rankings for searches such as Sear...

2006-12-31 01:09:01 Over the last couple of days I've been using Xenu Link Sleuth to highlight any broken links for this blog. I find Xenu to be an excellent tool which I use regularly to check client websites and it's helped to successfully fix any broken links in this case.Apologies to RSS subscribers as this has caused some old posts to be highlighted as new, this should be fine now as all links have been updated.
Is Search Engine Land already taking over from SEW?
2006-12-31 01:09:01 Yesterday was the official opening of Danny Sullivan's Search Engine Land following the original announcement last month. Many people in the search industry believe this will mean the end of Search Engine Watch with users expected to follow the strong team of correspondents, including Barry Schwartz and Chris Sherman, to make the move.Search Engine Land Vs Search Engine WatchFrom looking at the two blogs this morning the Search Engine Land blog covers a wider range of yesterday's stories and already appears to have become the best blog for all the latest search related news, while SEW is obviously in a period of transition after the loss of many key editors. I'm interested in following the progress of both blogs and have added some of the current website statistics, below, so that these can be looked back at in the New Year to see how things have developed.Current StatsAlexa:SEW 1 Week Average: 828SEL 1 Week Average: 3,026RSS:SEW: 12,766 SubscribersSEL: Feed count not currently l... 2006-12-31 01:09:01 The following is a paid advertisement via ReviewMe:Many people struggle to keep up with all the technical jargon used on the Internet. To help improve the users understanding of these terms SEO Book have produced an excellent search engine marketing glossary. The glossary gives a complete and up-to-date A-Z of information, from above the fold to Zeal, which easily lets users find out the meaning of many terms. Crazy Egg Website Tracking
2006-12-31 01:09:01 I've been tracking the Google AdSense clicks of A Place in the Sun over the last couple of weeks using Crazy Egg. This has proved to be an excellent experiment as the user activity can be viewed simply using a heatmap to show an individual pages hot-spots. Also thanks to Hiten Shah for upgrading my account to 10,000 visits per month for free! The stats from Crazy Egg have shown 497 unique visits to the homepage, highlighting that the majority of users navigate to a specific country page using the drop-down list. Of the 371 page clicks 185 (49.9%) were on the drop-down list with 72 clicks on the go button, this is interesting as it shows that over half of the users do not find what they are looking for in the drop-down list so don't click to continue or perhaps expect that choosing an item will automatically forward to the selected page without clicking go. The rest of the clicks were split fairly evenly, with 23 clicks on the Google AdSense ad block which is an average CTR of 6.2%.... More About: Website , Site , Webs , King
MFA Websites Google AdWords Video
2006-12-31 01:09:01 Search Engine Roundtable today noticed a video, below, which demonstrates PPC to PPC to PPC pages via Google AdWord s & AdSense Network. In other words a user will click a Google ad and be presented with landing pages containing more Google ads to similar websites, using similar layouts and again using ads based upon the same keywords. It's unclear whether this video was recorded before the recent landing page quality score update but it does highlight the extent of the problem Google are facing with MFA (Made For AdSense) websites. I have just performed a search for 'forklift' on Google and have been presented with an advert for Forklift.AlltheIndustrials.com, an MFA website which features in the video. The ad did appear on the third page of listings which suggests that maybe the site has been penalised for having a low quality landing page but it's obviously still being allowed to appear for these searches despite this by paying above the minimum bid. Google AdWords Trademark Policy
More articles from this author:2006-12-31 01:09:01 A common question I'm asked is about the use of trademarked terms in Google AdWord s, basically you can bid for trademarked keywords in the US and Canada but cannot use these terms within the ad text, as answered below."How do I prevent unauthorized advertisers from using my trademarked term(s) in their ad text and keywords?Google AdWords has a trademark complaint procedure in place to help trademark owners monitor the use of their trademarked terms by AdWords advertisers. The trademark complaint procedure varies depending upon where the trademark owner has trademark rights.
